The Zombie Cocktail Recipe - a MONSTER tiki
VloĆŸit

- The zombie may very easily be the scariest tiki cocktail known to mankind! During the early years of tiki, men typically did not drink cocktails mixed with fruit juices, as it wasn't seen as a masculine thing to do. As a response, Don the Beachcomber developed the zombie recipe to call for multiple boozes, including high proof spirits, to create a tiki drink that would intimidate even the strongest of drinkers. Cleverly naming it after a monster and enforcing a two drink limit on the menus did the trick, and soon drinking the zombie was seen as a challenge, and a feat of strength.
What's incredible to me is how smooth this cocktail can be. With so much alcohol, this is a dangerous drink because you don't notice it so much at first. Give it time, though, and this one will will sneak up on you. Drinkers beware!

Lol happy Independence Day!
Drinking, and... knowing things? Nice try, that's a recipe for Tyrion Lannister.
Great cocktail, but I was always taught, the cheapest liquids go in 1st incase of a mistake, not the alcohols 1st.
I think you missed the kitchen sink.
VERY dangerous cocktail. Spent an afternoon this summer drinking these in my backyard, how did that play out? just glad I was in my own yard lol
Now thatâs what I call drinking responsibly! Youâre own back yard was a great call đ I donât know what an afternoon of drinking these would do to me!
@@AndersErickson not recommended lol
So wish I could try this! There was a Chinese restaurant in Glenwood, IL., called "Dragon Inn" which our family and friends went too for like 40 years. They were known for their Zombie cocktails, which were so delicious and had a cult following among many people. If you had more than three of them, you literally turned into a Zombie, and a drooling one at that! Dragon Inn closed about 10 years ago and took their recipe with them. I've searched high and low trying to find a Zombie as good as theirs, but still haven't found one that compares in taste. I don't think their's had as many ingredients as yours, but I know they used 3 rums, with Meyer's Dark and Bacardi 151 among them. Seeing this cocktail brings back so many great memories (and a few not so great memories). Thanks!
I hope you made it back to the house safely!
I mean I had 3 the last time I played dark souls
I love how you explain all the ingredients and give us the brand names, its very useful to us newbees
This is a truly great cocktail. The overproof rum allows you to get a spirit-strength cocktail that still has prominent fresh fruit flavors, and the mint aroma really sets it off. Layers and layers of anise, cinnamon, fruit, oak, vanilla, almond-- everything. It's worth all the effort.
That said, in the words of Combichrist, this shit will fuck you up.
I love the history lesson behind each drink, it makes me a cocktail aficionado!đ€Ł
Hahaha I laughed when you walked out dressed as an Angostura bottle! Amazing! Love the Zombie! Your recipe is almost identical to the one I made.. although I canât find the Velvet Falernum so I use the Fee Brothers Falernum Syrup. Cheers!
Nice! That Fee Brothers Falernum Syrup is great too. Iâm glad you liked the Angostura costume. Been waiting all year to wear that thing! đ
Another good one! Thanks Oz (and Anders) . The TIKI series is just đ
Love these videos so much!!
New to the cocktail game. Your channel is revolutionary, can't wait to kit out my bar and also try one of these tiki drinks đ
Just discovered your channel, new subscriber. Love your videos! Straight to the point and edited well. đ Cheers!
Has the homemade Falernum "for another time" video happened yet? Love the Tiki recipes! Bring on the summer!! To the swim-up bar!
Anderstura is back!! Definitely my all-time favorite costume! đđŒđđŒđđŒ though the Gilliganesque tiki outfit comes in a close second đ another great video you two!!
I will forever love that Anderstura costume đ Happy Halloween! đ đ»
Anders, thank you for posting the recipe for my favorite Zombie! My birthday was Halloween and it was the perfect present. Look forward to the day when we can return to Ward 8 and have one there....
Happy birthday!! I hope you were able to enjoy your day with a zombie or two!
đ§ââïž đ đ§ââïž
Iâm watching on Christmas Day. lol.
LOVE your Angostura costume. Az the hammerhead is cute too!
Hey Anders, Thanks for using my 'Kon Tiki Aloha' font in this video! Very awesome :) And I love your channel! Great stuff, I'm learning a lot
Just became addicted to this channel
Stumbled across you on my feed while searching for cocktails....I immediately subscribed...great videos...
Thank you so much! Cheers!
You two are great. Been off the booze since I became a dad five months ago, but love watching these videos.
Iâm watching on the 4th of July!đșđžđșđžâ€ïžđ
Cheers đ„
Hey man, nice drinks you bring to your channel, I like your style as well. So far, you are my favourite. đ I've been a barman for the last 32 years. I just came home from work h 02:30am. Still making cocktails đȘđčđžâïž still love my job.
Ciao đźđč
Great content Anders.
Eager to make the Anders' falernum recipe.
đ
You two are awesome - love the shark-head.
So many people know the boozy, syrupy version of this and this recipe just gets it right!
Appreciate that!
Fantastic. The Angostura bitters costume is so cool. And the rest of the costumes are super cool. Cheers and thanks for sharing this wonderful classic!
Thank you so much! The costumes were a lot of fun, and the drink was tasty too. Cheers!
That looks amazing! Thank you for the tutorial. đž
But also⊠I like the shark hat. Where can I find one??
It's Valentines Day, 2023.. So thank you for the Halloween wishes Anders lol. Seeing you as a bottle of Angostura Bitters is hilarious because until watching this channel, I literally didn't know what that even was.
One of my favorites â€
OMG, Az has a perfect hat for this drink. You're literally hammered after a couple of these :)
Bro, youâre the best as always. I am afraid of this drink, once I had one too many haha đ€Ł
Maybe I should give it another go as an adult this time.
đ Yeah definitely try it again knowing what youâre getting yourself into. Maybe stick to the 2 drink limit. Or just one and wait a while!
You and Azusa nailed it!
Thank you, Wilson! Cheers! đ„
@@AndersErickson Cheers!
This cocktail is like the much and more complex precursor to the Long Island Iced Tea. Itâs almost like a letâs throw things at the wall and see what sticks cocktails. Awesome Angostura cocktail! đ„
Yeah thereâs definitely a lot going on in this one! I do think the zombie is very balanced and surprisingly smooth for having so much alcohol involved. It sneaks up on you and will wipe you out. When I have a Long Island Iced Tea, on the other hand, I can tell Iâm being punched in the face đ
@@AndersErickson The names of the dangerous drinks should have scary names, like Zombies and Hurricanes. Maybe a disclaimer, like Uber Required.
Great Video! Ready to make these on the patio tomorrow. Quick question, can you use any type of absinthe?
Thank you for wishing the good whatever day, because it is actually my birthday today!!
Finally got round to trying this one after making some cinnamon syrup. Made a bit of a mistake with the glassware as I only had a standard highball and it filled the glass alone after just a whip shake.
Very tasty, very dangerous, very much a 'one and done' drink for me. I think I'm more of a mai tai guy overall, but I'll probably revisit the zombie at some point (albeit scaled down to a less intimidating volume)
I checked this drink is 3.5 standard servings of alcohol. If you had 2 you would literally be drinking 7 drinks. I'll pass on this, thank you. I get hangovers easily enough.
đgood job
Drank this on a pub crawl in Berlin. Very fuzzy memories after it. Remember a giant ballon being kicked around in the street.
Thanks for stirring that memory, Anders!
You guys are wearing best costumes)))
Yay for Tiki!
I just love y'all đđ
The shark thing...đ€Ł
Dude I love you
Lol and lastly a bush of mint
Dude!!! Where do I find an Angostura Bitters costume??!?! Hilarious!
I'm actually watching this on Halloween, a year later. Spooky đ» đ
I am ready for the homemade velvet falernum video. Is it "another time" yet? â€
Who is the one person who gave a thumbs down to this? Crazy... love your work Anders!
Thanks, John! Glad you like video - Cheers!
Yes people! Choose Anderstura Aromatic Recipes for top quality drinks. High All Star Level!
I truly enjoy your audiovisual presentations and organoleptic explanations. Respect and greetings from Berlin and -
to the the bar, my human friend đ„âïžđ„
I remember this was one of the first cocktails I bought into. Like, I had to buy a great deal of the ingredients.
And I just hated it đ
It put me off for making cocktails for a while. I think I'm gonna try this one and see if it's still awful đ
Hi Anders although i'm new to your channel and to cocktails in general i have picked up some good tips and tricks from you already could you possibly tell me if you know of a good substitute for the hamilton 151 or lemon hart 151 as i live in Scotland we don't really get those brands here and I would like to keep it close to the drink as possible thanks Robert.
Check that one off the list. Super tasty but I need to pick up some overproof rum. Wish I could get Hamilton out here.
You're not a shark next year, carry a briefcase a say. "I'm a lawyer".
Hey Anders ! Still here in 2023 , and still waiting for a homemade recipe for the falernum ! I'd love if you could do a falernum / cordial / shrubs video since i'm just getting into that ! Wish you the best , keep up the good fun !
My favorite Anders costume!!!! And my favorite tiki! Thank you both so much. I needed both.
Absolutely! Cheers and Happy Halloween! đ
Watching this on the Summer Solstice 2021! Letâs make a Zombie!
"It doesn't taste AZ dangerous AZ it is" XD
I want that Angostura Bitters costume...
I would totally try a DIY falernum if you made a video!
Great cocktail, but I was always taught, the cheapest liquids go in 1st incase of a mistake, not the alcohols 1st.
Yâall are so cute it kills me
Hi Anders, great video as always! But unfortunately, i canât get 151 demerara rum in my country. Can i use different overproof rum instead? Thanks â€ïž
Ya! Plantation OFTD makes a great substitute, it actually is 1/3 guyana (demerara) rum, and is 138 proof which is close enough. Martin Cate helped make it. It's great!
Az is very cool
jajajjaja i really love the costume
More bang for your buck đ€Șđ
Where do you buy overproof demerara rum? I can't find anywhere in the UK that sells it?
My all time favourite drink. Love it. If choosing falernum, I'd advise against the Monin one. Not great, imho. Taylor's is 'go to'. The drink also works very well with Pernod instead of absinthe. Enjoyed the vid - thanks for sharing the Zombie love.
What a really cute couple. Fun.
Why not poor the sirups first and rinse with the acidic juice?
'Can confirm'.....Yes!! LetterKenney ...love this channel even more!!! Made me go out and spend 1000 on starting my first bar
6 years ago I was served a X version of the Zombie at The Berkley's Blue Bar and it was a riot. Its basically double of the spirits while keeping everything else the same. Ca-ra-zy boozy, a real liver challenge.
Can i substitute the velvet falernum with a syrup like monin falernum syrup ?
Zombies have absinthe in them? Now I need all the Zombies!
Oh yes! If not absinthe, herbsaint or pastis will be used. No matter the case, itâs definitely your style!
Used to *love* zombies but my ex hated me drinking them. He said after 3 zombies, I turned into one. lol
That drink will write your name on the bathroom wall
Can you make a viddie for the Pink Lady & Grasshopper? Asking for a friend. She is 103 and "knew" Jack Kennedy đ
As someone with a pretty bad nut allergy, is there any alternative to falernum, and for that matter, orgeat? Iâve made a sunflower seed âorgeatâ before and it was alright but assumingely not the best alternative
Scary. Very, very scary.
Spooky bitters đ
Would love to see which is the most dangerous cocktail the Zombie vs Long Island Ice Tea.
You should make a tutorial video of making homemade falernum bro
I was on half of one of these..I went to bathroom in a bar and i literally missed the bathroom..So so dangerous i couldnt even walk normal..damn
4th of july 2022 here!!
5:27 I had a mini heart attack.
Looks delicious! Maybe a silly question, but where do you get such full sprigs of mint? I've been making some drinks with fresh mint and all I can find are those little plastic packages of 'fresh' mint or a Charlie-Brown-Christmas-tree-looking mint plant at the grocery store. Do you grow your own?
International markets and health food stores are good for lots of fresh herbs.
I had the same problem, here in Austria, usual supermarket franchises only have these small plastic bags of mint like you described. Then i went to a turkish-arab market, not only do they have these big branches of mint (for much less money btw), they also have a lot more and cheaper citrus fruits.
Long story short, since i'm into Tiki drinks, i go to the turkish supermarket once a week. :)
im about to make this tomorrow in my Cthulhu mug
The Cthulhu mug sounds awesome! Cheers!
This is the first drink I had on my 21st.
Unfortunately it was very weak.
Do you have any suggestions for a substitute for the Hamilton 151 rum? Itâs not available in Europe it seems. Cheers!
I think you can use any overproof rum, in that one place I had this drink they even used Stroh 160 (a trashy Austrian rum-esque "thing" primarily used for making grog at ski resort kiosks).
Happy Friday the 13th from 2022! Close enough đ
Is the 2 straws a thing for getting the drink on both sides of your tongue or something?
made two of these for me and my wife but added 20ml of passionfruit syrup and a fresh passion fruit to each cup and my wife is currently wasted from one cup and i reckon if i do a second cup i'll be well on my way đ
Iâve probably watched this video a million times, I love the channel and I finally made it today. It was good ! But I think I put a 1/4 ounce of absinthe by accident and thatâs all I tasted lol, this shits strong as hell !!!!
Random thing but what the difference between all the different kinds of rum I ask cuz I am only just starting to get in to cocktail lol so feel kinda dumb
Just curious? Who are the 14 viewers that gave a thumb down review? This guy is one hell of a bartender.
I love you
Happy Halloween from April 2024!
I make it with passion and pineapple
Everyday is Halloween.
Sidenote: Felernum is a liquor only native to the Island of Barbados
man you have to go to the island in that costume
Hahaha. Theyâd think I was some kind of strange fanatic! ...they could be right đ€
1/8 oz of absinthe! It should be 1/8 teaspoon or six drops otherwise the drink will only taste like anis.
I feel like you should have Az on more.
A pro showing a non-pro (Az and us ) how to make cocktail. Like in the French 75 video.
Iâm glad you enjoyed the French 75 video! I also love when Az comes on. Iâll keep that in mind for future videos. Thanks for the comment!
I like a good zombie, but, like... IDK about the Falernum. To me, Falernum always just has the consistency of dog slobber :-(
