My Go-To Easy Tiki - The Tradewinds
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 3. 07. 2024
- Today, I'm going to show you an easy tiki, the Tradewinds! This was always my go-to when someone would come into the bar on a tiki night and order a drink right before last call. Not only did I feel confident they'd love the taste of it, but I would use equal ratios to keep it simple, and swizzle it right in the glass to get it out quickly. This recipe is based on the Tradewinds recipe found in Beachbum Berry Remixed. With flavors of apricot, lemon, and coconut, this one is definitely a crowd pleaser! Cheers!

Hey Andres I enjoy your videos, you have made me get into mixing cocktails, especially Tiki drinks!! I watch your video on building your personal bar. I almost have everything you recommend, was wondering the Apricot Liquor you recommend is pretty pricey and not sure if I will like it, so I saw one on Total wine thatâs cheaper and small bottle called Drillaud apricot liquor. Is that a bottle you recommend?
@@f2343 Thanks for the question! So glad you are enjoying making cocktails. I can't say I've had that bottle (I'll have to pick one up sometime!) but if it's smaller and more affordable, I say give it a try! I bet it will work just fine đ
Just tried it with Phraya Gold (Thai rum) and Don Papa sherry casks. It was divine.
Cheers from Paris, France.
@Anders Erickson, I watched your Hotel Nacional video and now this one, and I'm excited to add an apricot liqueur to my bar now. My question is, you use the Giffard Abricot du Roussillon here and the Rothman & Winter Apricot Liqueur for the Hotel Nacional. I have both available locally, for $33 and $23 respectively. Which would you recommend as a general 'apricot liqueur' if cost isn't a concern? Thanks!
As someone who isnât really familiar with rums, maybe an episode explaining the different types and where one is generally better than another for various drinks? How is a gold rim different than a clear rum or a spiced rum? Or is a spiced rum the same as a gold rum? Thanks for the nice tiki drink recipe!
"I love this drink cuz it's super easy to make" [pulls out five bottles, nutmeg and homemade cream of coconut lol]
I really thought the same, like damn!!!
pulls out super obscure apricot liquer
Welcome to the world of tiki....
@@robertspearko8809 no thanks. Gimme some whiskey, a small bottle of bitters and a sugar cube.
@@albellis524 haha I feel ya, but I bout a cheap bottle of apricot brandy and I use it in place of any orange liquor. Works great

Thanks, Cory! Appreciate the comment. Cheers!

Frozen pineapple fronds? That's genius! Thanks for that tip!
Absolutely! Cheers, Bruce! đč
Finally a Tradewinds made in Sweden. Took me a couple of weeks to get all the booze but when it all came together; a breeze of the southern hemisphere! đ
Wonderful, Johan! Cheers to you!! đ
I drink wine pretty much only. I still love these videos. Sometimes I dont even watch, I just listen. Anders has a very calming voice, and could probably make a channel about anything, even outside of anything in my interest, and I would still watch/listen.
So two things:
1. I love that you used rums from my two home away from homes (PR & HI).
2. I didnât watch you make the cocktail because I kept staring at the fire shirt.
đ
Puerto Rico and Hawaii are two incredible places to call a home away from home!! Absolutely beautiful islands. And you've got good taste in shirts đ
Well done, Anders! I just got the book, Smugglerâs Cove, and the first drink I thought I would try is this one. Wow! I was blown away! Absolutely delicious, and made with your recipe for coconut cream. Thanks!
2nd video of yours that I'm watching. LOVE that you are commenting on how you talk about how the ingredients effect the taste of the drink. Particularly like how you discussed the impact of the flavor of the rum-NICELY DONE!!!
I avoided rum for many years. I had overindulged when I was in my early 20s and basically burned myself out on rum in the worst of ways lol
I figured that it's been long enough and if I'm being honest I was getting a bit tired of whiskey. Then I saw this upload and my love for rum has been reinvigorated.
I've also had a romantic affair with mezcal recently so... I wanted to see if a tradewinds could be made with a bit of mezcal. It WORKS.
I've spent the past month working on making my own take on a tradewinds and this is what I created:
The Burning Plane
Atomizer Absinthe Rinse
3/4 oz Lemon juice
3/4 oz coconut cream
1 oz Citronge
1 oz Koloa Kaua'I Dark Rum
1 oz El Dorado 12 Yr Demerara Rum
1 oz Vida Mezcal
Shake. Serve in the glass of your choice. Garnish with orange wheel, luxardo cherry, and an orchid.
If you end up trying this (Anders or anyone else who finds this post), let me know what you think! It's become a favorite of my friends and family.
Love it! That looks so good!
Definitely going to try this
Just made this and itâs delicious! And boy am I glad I got the Koloa dark rum, the vanilla notes really round out each sip and itâs just a delight, thanks for the recipe!
You are AWESOME!!!! The detail you provide!!!
Today I learned of the existence of the swizzle stick tree. And the drink looks good too.
That tree sure can make a good cocktail.
Nature's blender is now my new favorite term!
Made the cocktail tonight but subbed the Don q for Plantation 5 year. This is one of my ladies' and my new favorite tiki cocktail. Thank you so much for sharing!
Anders - Iâve literally watched 100 hours of your videos (many multiple times) since I found your channel about 3 months ago. I figured out I enjoy Rum and Tiki drinks to go along with what I already knew - margarita. Iâm a tiki fan, but hadnât made your trade winds until tonight. sO GOOD!!
Thanks!!
Made these last night. used coco lopez and hiram walker apricot liqueur but everything else was the same as yours. my god, absolutely KILLER cocktail. the koloa kaui rum is a must, takes it to another level. thank you for sharing.
I love what you did to that umbrella. Perfect parts insouciant and whimsical for tiki!
Looks amazing.
Well done!

I'm imagining being on my favourite beach, in Maui, right now, with this lovely Tiki cocktail!! Talk about perfection!! I have never made a Tiki drink, but I am about to try!! These flavours, together, look amazing and delicious!! Thanks Anders!!
This is a great starting point for tiki, Christine! I hope you enjoy it. It'll take you right to that beach on Maui đđ
@@AndersErickson Sounds so lovely!! Thanks Anders!!
I like here your head is at! Especially with the warm weather coming!
Oooooh very different music this week! Love it!
Thanks, Marley! Tiki week is always fun for the musical options!
Great video! I will be making these this weekend.
After many months, I finally got my bottle of Giffard Abricot du Roussillon to make this drink, and I have to say, it tastes just like this video makes you imagine it would. I used the Koloa Dark and the vanilla notes are definitely a great match with the apricot. I also happened to have a bottle of Koloa Gold, and while it created something very yummy, smooth, and easy to drink altogether, I'm definitely subbing the latter for something more assertive next time. Cheers!
This definitely doesn't looks complicate to make and sounds darn delicious. Now I want to make me this drink. I should stop watching your videos in the morning. hahaha Great job and a really cool shirt. Cheers Anders!
This one is easy enough for mornings đ Cheers!!
We've made this several times now, and we also discovered it's delicious when you swap Creme de Mure for the apricot liqueur! Also the homemade cream of coconut is a MUST.
Creme de Mure is a brilliant idea! Thanks for sharing - Iâm so glad youâre enjoying this one!
Thanks Anders, you made my weekend again, your recipes are gold đ Cheers đč
Cheers to you, David! Appreciate that. Happy weekend! đč
Love you Anders. Send many new bartenders your way đ
This!!! Wow, loved it so much. What a great tiki!
So happy you liked it! Cheers, David!
The inside-out tiki umbrella. Genius!
Doing a tiki day and going through Anders's recipes! On my second attempt, I tried 1/2 orange juice (fresh of course) and 1/2 lemon. It was delicious.
how flabby of you
You've pointed out that changing rums is a fun way to experiment. I make mine with Giffard, Smugglers Cove coconut cream recipe, El Dorado 8 year, and Hamilton Pot Still Gold. A bit more funk but so smooth. Cheers and thanks for your great videos. This is a wonderful drink.
Love the simplicity of this one! Good cocktails doesn't have to mean complicatedđ!
Exactly! Some of my favorite cocktails are extremely simple. Cheers!
Easily one of my favorites just for the ease of making it. I subbed in Koloa to match your recipe after using Gosling's a few times and the results were even better.
Nice video! Great tip on building a tiki drink in the glass by swizzling it. I haven't tried this one, but it looks super tasty!
Great cocktail! I just recently came across your channel and love all that you like to do the classics! Took me a while to get a hold of the apricot liquor . Finally got some and tried this one last night. Very tasty!! and love that its equal parts! I used Hamilton 86 and Appleton Estates Signature rum.
This one is going on to my list of "Go-to's"
Completely underrated channel, keep killing it Anders
Thank you, Greg! Appreciate that - cheers to you! đ„
I'd have to add a little extra creme of coconut because because I LOVE coconut in my drinks. But this looks delightful!
A little extra coconut wouldn't hurt at all. I think you'd love it. Easy drinking for sure!
Perfect timing Anders, My new tiki mugs should arrive tomorrow. This is a must try
This is the perfect drink to break them in! Cheers, Ryan!
If the metal sizzle stick is made out of steel, then it shouldn't scratch the glass as glass usually has hardness of ~5.5 and steel around 4.5 (Mohs). So glass is harder and can't be scratched by the softer steel. But the values may vary depending on the type of glass and steel in question.
Great channel, really enjoyable to watch as a chemist! :)
I've just stumbled across your channel and I rapidly fell in love! Your style is so unique, and now I want to spend all of my money in bottles of booze to make those stunning cocktails! Cheers from Italy!!!
Thank you so much, Stefano! Cheers to you! đźđč
Tried a variation on this tonight. Because I can't stand apricot, I substituted banana liqueur for the apricot, and my god was it good. Really recommend trying the variation.
This looks so delicious!!!
Definitely a crowd pleaser! Cheers!
I guess I'm making this for our Happy Hour!
This looks and sounds delightful Anders. Great cocktail
Dangerously delightful đ Thanks, Carl!
Good drink
Watched this for roughly the sixth time today (New Year's Day) and coincidentally caught the reference to being born in the last week of the 70s...so allow me to wish you a happy (belated) Birthday, sir! Iâm try to make one this weekend đ€đœ
Thanks! You're going to love it. Cheers!
i love the music.
Just tried this. Strong as you'd expect but very pleasant. Going to try the next one with lime as I think it'll suit the coconut and rum.
Be sure to use cream of coconut and not coconut cream or milk!
Anders this looks good. I am going to experiment with this :) And see what fun ensures!!
Thanks, David! It's so good with any number of rums. I'm sure you'll be a fan!
I consider myself quite lucky to have found your channel. Thanks for having awesome recipes while simultaneously being fun to watch
Iâve made this with Appleton Estate 12 and Pusserâs Gunpowder Proof and it was pretty great. It was very rich and I think it would be good blended like a Pina Colada.
Do love the Tradewinds. Have made with Gosling's Black Seal and Plantation 5 year. My apricot was Rothman and Winter. Was super surprised the coconut is background unlike a Pain Killer. If you're reading this and haven't made one stop waiting and get to it.
I'll need to make this!! I have a metal swizzle stick. Works well and has not scratched the glass yet
That's so good to know. Thank you! Okay, now I might have to get one đ
Really nice to find a tiki drink that doesnât require loads of niche ingredients
Try a hurricane! Itâs only rum, lemon juice and passion fruit syrup and Anders has an excellent video for making the passion fruit syrup.
I've fiddled with this one a few times now. I love it with 1/3rd an oz of home-made Orgeat added (your Orgeat recipe).
WOW!!! This looks awesome. I've been meaning to buy some apricott for a while. Now I HAVE to get some. Great music, btw!!!!!
Thanks, Tim! Definitely grab a bottle if you can. And thanks for noticing the music!

Love this Anders! Didn't know about this drink. Sounds super cool. I would definitely use some Hamilton in it
Thanks, Gabriel! The Hamilton is very good in this one. It's hard for me not to use it in most of my rum drinks!
Delicious. Unique as a tiki but oddly familiar creamsicle vibe
Go-to easy tiki cocktail for last call. Proceeds to haul out:
Lewis bag and mallet
Swizzle stick
Micro plane
Two types of rum
Apricot liqueur
Cream of coconut
Lemon
Pineapple fronds
Nutmeg
Anders: extremely simple and you donât need a million ingredients
Then proceeds to use 7 ingredients 5 utensils plus ornaments
And makes it look so easy!
Anders, if you want to do a bit of research into American Tiki culture, check out the Kahiki Supper Club in Columbus, Ohio. It opened in 1961, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997, and it was demolished three years later. But for quite a while, it was THE place to go.
Love yer stuff Anders. I grew up in Puerto Rico and my preferences for rum were: 1 Ron Superior, and 2 Don Q. I understand that Bacardi caught on to this and bought both the Superior and Don Q distilleries! Regardless, whenever I see one of your You tubes Iâm all over it, and Iâve got a crush on Az as well. Great work, take care, 73 Tom KC3QAC
Thanks for the video. I subscribed to your channel about a week ago ... wish Iâd found it before quarantine! Lol. So I went and bought a ton of stuff to make some of there yummy looking drinks. LOVE me a good tradewinds. I only have a cheap apricot brandy (by DuBouchette) at the moment. I gotta try to get my hands on the Giffard.
If you can get a bottle of the Giffard, I highly recommend it. If you can't, that's okay. It'd be fun to try a side-by-side with the DuBouchette! Cheers, Dominic!
Awesome video Anders. Too bad I donât have the ingredients for tonight but hopefully soon.
Thanks, Jack! Definitely one to try. Whenever that may be...no rush đ
I said Anders made tiki today! J said âLonely Penguin?â I said no and then he cried lonely penguin tears. Thank you both for another lovely break from reality.
đ "lonely penguin tears". I owe Juan that cocktail. You both deserve a good tiki!
Youâve really blown up since this video! Itâs been long overdue
steel in very rare cases can scratch the glass since the hardness in most cases of steel is 50-60 HRC and glass is 80 so you don't have to worry
Sigh. #1 on post-lockdown agenda is returning to my second hand shop to find a shirt that is at least half a tiki-lit as yours.
Also, good easy tiki cocktail! Much needed!
Hahaha. I love a good tiki shirt. I look forward to the post-lockdown hunt as well! Cheers!
Anders, I think I was the best thing to come in the 70s đ , but I guess the Tradewinds beat us all. What a wonderful Tiki Sip. I need the summer back ASAP.
Great response, Georgi đ€Ł Tough to beat this drink though. One sip and summer doesn't seem so far away!
â@@AndersErickson, I am making this for sure. Can't resist.
Hey just found your channel. It is real and good. I watch a lot of educated barfly, HTD, Steve the bartender, and behind the bar. I really like them and I really like your channel as well. I like when at the end of the French 75 when your camera person came around, that was cool, do that more at the end when you share, sometime she sips, do that on camera, it is good!
Thanks, Jake! Glad you like the channel. Hopefully we'll have her on more. Cheers!
So perfect! I just watched your presentation of the âHotel Nacionalâ and thought, â that sounds great, but Iâm not buying a bottle of apricot liqueur for one application!â And BAM! another apricot liqueur drink!
Youâre good...youâre real good!
SlĂĄinte!
BTW, Iâm planning on using Goslingâs and Smith & Cross. Thoughts?
đ I love it. Now you have to get that apricot liqueur! And I'm a fan of both rums. The Gosling's is nice and easy for a dark rum, and I like mixing with Smith & Cross because of its bold flavor and higher proof. I think they'll do well in the Tradewinds. If you find one overpowers the other, just adjust the ratios to your liking. Cheers!
This looks awesome! I think I just ordered those same glasses đ ...I also keep pineapple fronds in the freezer, my wife thinks Iâm weird đđ
Love these glasses! And if you're weird because of the pineapple fronds, so am I đ Thanks, Rob!

Anders, whatâs up dude!? So, hey, we have some stuff in common. I used to bartend at the Ruthâs Chris on Dearborn back from 1999 to 2003. Also, back in September I met Cody with Unicorn Auctions to discuss HR services (thatâs what I sell đ) and I told him I do stand-up and he told me I should start a CZcams channel. Hey, Anders! First off, I love your videos. You explain it all simply and clearly have fun doing it. I am looking to add to my bar and want to make this drink, but am having trouble finding any apricot liqueur in my area. Is apricot brandy an adequate substitute? For my first time making drinks I like to be as close to the original recipe as possible but I also don't want to pay $10 to ship a $25 bottle if I can substitute brandy from my local liquor store lol
Tried this out today, and thought it was a little too strong. Good, but strong. Probably best if I add a little less of the Rum đ
