    To all people that can't understand this, think how this guy is mocking with the notion that the whole space program could be made in a garage, there's even a special effects station. Or you could see him as a grown up kid, can't you guys relate the camera he made to his father to what kind of replica he is making right now? i know there's a ton lot of crap when we talk about contemporary art, but this is real good and entertaining so, what's wrong?

    • @Sam_Barnes

      that's a great comment.

      What's wrong is that there is no context in this video. Art is all about context, without context, nobody can tell what the art is about.
      I had no idea why this is such a big deal from this video alone, I even thought at one point that this video is trying to show how the moon landing can be faked and other conspiracy nonsense.

    • @DanielA-yg3un
      @DanielA-yg3un Před 7 lety +4

      Art requires much more than just "it's ironic". Mocking something is not sufficient to display it in an exhibit.

      @tobynmanthorpe Před 7 lety +2

      @fernandoanimator I'm just not into it. The models are simple... and I know that's the idea, but just not my cup of tea. The performance aspect of it adds a layer of seriousness and dedication that is taken a bit too far, IMO. But that's fine; if art wasn't subjective then no one would have fun.

    • @DanielA-yg3un

      I really don't believe that art is subjective though. You should read this article from the Art Renewal Center: www.artrenewal.org/articles/Philosophy/ArtScam/artscam.php
      It may seem a little too cynical and although you may not agree with all of it, I think that it's a really good read regardless.

    Don't know if you ever read these comments Adam, but I just had the opportunity to meet Mr. Sachs last weekend at the Nasher Sculpture Center here in Dallas Texas, where he has his current (Awesome) exhibit, "Tea Ceremony."
    In any event, I am a voice artist for Makita USA and when I discovered that he utilizes Makita power tools and batteries in many of his works, I let him know of my involvement and he pulled out his phone-camera & asked me If I would be willing to record a couple lines for him (to the effect of how Makita power tools are the official power tools of Tom Sachs :-)
    The guy is not only a genius as an artist, but also pretty darn cool dude. If you see him, definitely tell him that I said hello.

    • @ruben9912
      @ruben9912 Před 7 lety +6

      It's certainly hard to explain much less define, but look at it like a kid like MrJest said, and it starts to make sense.
      Adam previously said it's the grown-up version of building a cardboard box in your closet as a kid and calling it a spaceship.
      Besides that the actual show that they do with all this is an experience.
      It's function is purely to give you a certain feeling like being in the command center of NASA would.
      That feeling is hard to translate through video. To reply to fuckingitupagain, "Art" is there to convey a feeling or an emotion or a story, or all of the above.
      And the strange thing is that's not a definable thing, we are all different, everybody will experience their own version of it.
      It's a way of non verbal communication, to transmit our playfulness and imagination as humans.
      Art, and what is needed to create it, is what separates us from being either monkeys or robots..
      In my experience anyways ;)

      Tom Sach's a Plastic Artists who made this exposition because he "Wanted to go to Mars". In several showcases he said to have contacted NASA & former astronaut Buzz Aldrin to work out the engineering of several components of the mission, despite being considered home-made, most pieces are very functional and "on-par" with the NASA counterparts in regards of rough function.
      In retrospect, what we saw is described as a home-made mission to Mars; having Tom Sach's deliberate lack of polish as a distinct feature of his artistic work; promptly described by his necessity to add human traits of imperfection to objects.

    What's funny to me is that I only know of Tom Sachs through Casey Neistat, Van Neistat, and Adam Savage. And Casey and Van are clearly influenced by Tom because they both worked for him and so they clearly draw inspiration from them. But I have never really done a deep dive on Tom Sachs. So when I see this work I see Casey and Van Neistat and not really Tom. This video and exhibit have me really intrigued tho. I think it's about time I go down the Tom Sachs rabbit hole and learn more about him. Casey, Van, and Adam are all creators I admire and it's cool to see who's work they admire.

    Ok...so I'm confused is this a guy that worked for NASA or was this a TV show? OOOOH, its neither. That maybe should have been made clearer. That this is strictly an art display made to make it feel like you are going on an exhibition to Jupiter's planet Europa. Didn't get that at all from the video.
