Toyota's $11 Billion Blunder: The Costly Sale of Tesla

In May 2010, Toyota made a strategic move by investing $50 million in a relatively unknown electric vehicle company called Tesla. At the time, Tesla was preparing for its initial public offering, pricing its shares at $17 each. Toyota acquired approximately 2.94 million shares, securing a 3% stake in the company.

The incumbent players of an industry usually don't know how to profit from major changes in their space. Typically a new entrant will be the one to capitalize instead. The old guys are just too focused on the existing market to affect significant change elsewhere.
