Michael Burry: Tesla Stock Price Could Plunge 90% This Year to Below $100

  • Michael Burry is short Tesla Stock and believes they could drop below $100 this year!
    The man that bet against America's housing system in 2007 and WON thinks there are some serious red flags with Tesla's current valuation and market cap, which has inflated Tesla's stock price 'ridiculously' higher than it should be.
    In December 2020, Burry decided to short Tesla stock, tweeting some "advice for a good guy", saying that he believes Elon Musk should sell off 25-50% of his shares to any potential buyers, which he states is "not dilution".
    Burry didn't do this on a whim, in fact, he compiled a spreadsheet that he also tweeted that showed Tesla's revenue, market cap and EBIT compared to 32 large auto manufacturers COMBINED, and the results were staggering.
    Now, I don't believe that Burry has an ill will towards Elon at Tesla and doesn't doubt their long term prospects - rather he is concerned that their current sales, revenues, market cap and importantly, their profits does not justify their current valuation and 'ridiculous' share price.
    Ultimately, the question becomes, does Cathie Wood of Ark Invest's track record with Tesla predictions give you enough confidence in their prospects. Or does Michael Burry's track record of ground breaking, short position calls concern you more.
    Both Burry and Wood have had an impeccable record in their investing careers and area constantly breaking ground. But in this instance, only one of them can be right. So who do you think it will be? Tesla to $1,400 or $100?

      They never finished their Giga factories though. The first one in Nevada still haven't built out to the size that what planned. They can expand their factories as production ramps up, but that will need more investment which means they will have to go cash flow negative again and again with no profits to dole out to shareholders. At some point they will hit diminishing returns and have to squeeze their profit margins making it near impossible to gain revenues to pay dividends that will justify the stock price. Most of their revenues is from auto sales, their energy business is still less than 10% of revenues. The software side of the company does not make any money directly. It all rides on autonomous taxi's to make any revenues from their software and there is no guarantee for when that will be allowed on the road by regulators. Could take many years, so until then, they are an auto company with a small side hustle in solar panels.

      Those who are saying that there will be 50 new electric vehicles on the market doesnt seem to realize that we have been hearing thus for as long as Tesla exist. And it's not that we dont believe that there will be a lot of electric vehicles . We simply believe that they will not be competitive to Tesla and although some will erode the market share of Tesla, they won't impinge on the growth or number of vehicles Tesla sells. Anything can happen in a short term. long term, if you hold Tesla, you will be just fine even if you bought it at 800-900 dollars in 2 to 5 years. Short term, if the inflation continue to go up, that will have a very negative impact on Stocks, both short and long term. Employment certainly will be affected too especially with COVID still affecting businesses, and individuals. Gov't wont allow the economy to tank for too long. They will keep printing money to spend their way out of trouble.
      Tesla is also doing well by keep innovating to lower their costs, and continue to produce more vehicles in the same time period which will lower the cost of doing business too. Their cashflow is increasing each year, and they are paying off their factories faster each quarter.

Look at the huge battery Tesla built in Australia. They will take market share from utilities, legacy auto, and completely dominate Lyft and Uber. • @james_robnett

      Bear in mind that Tesla *has* to achieve those revenue streams to be worth their current valuation. That is a huge gamble. They're losing in many of those fronts, hell they don't even have a moat for EVs. They're about to face stiff competition from every major car manufacturer. It doesn't matter if the car is inferior there are a lot of people that will by a Ford Mustang EV before a Tesla EV. That's going to start eating into their potential profits.
      As of right now Burry is up big, not sure exactly where he shorted but he can get out at any point and make a big win, he's closing in on doubling his money in 1 week whereas the price would have to triple from here to get to 1500.

    • @klppdc
      @klppdc Před 3 lety

      I totally agree. Even a 50 PE ratio is too high for Tesla because their core business basically involves manufacturing huge volumes of EVs. It’s not a scalable business. It’s very hard to scale up manufacturing operations.
      Compared to that Amazon really started to make big profits after they entered cloud business. Due to cloud their high PE is justified but for Tesla I don’t see such a cash cow. It remains to be seen if Tesla can make fully driverless cars. That will change the game.

Also once the leading self driving cars penetrate the market far enough, it will become easier for other self driving companies to enter since it is easier to drive along with other self driving cars than drive with regualr drivers.
