Brecon Beacons Hike: WW2 Wellington Bomber Wreckage, Fan y Big & Ridge Walking

- Views as far as the eye can see on this incredible Brecon Beacons hike, in beautiful South Wales. We start at a good sized free carpark (Blaen y Glyn Uchaf CF48 2UT) right next to the stunning Nant Bwrefwr river, famed for its epic waterfalls, one of which we were immediately met with when leaving the carpark.
From there we make our way up Graig y Fan Ddu and walk along its' ridge. This is a hike with a huge amount of high ground full of some of the best views in South Wales. After walking over the boggy heath we reach Fan y Big and enjoy some time on the, very photographed, 'diving board', a massive rock protruding from the mountain, giving the illusion of danger in many a photo!
We then follow another jaw-dropping ridge around to the flanks of Waun Rydd to spend some time at the WW2 Wellington Bomber crash site, here there is wreckage and a memorial to the brave Canadian crew who sadly died in the incident.
After going up to Waun Rydd's high point we wind our way down the valley, over moorland and rivers, ending up in the Talybont Forset before returning to the carpark. This is circular hike is just over 10 miles and really was such a perfect walk for early summer.

So glad you managed to get out in the heat wave. It’s always weird feeling seeing those plane wrecks as they make you think of the price the crew paid in the war. Also how hostile those ridges must be in a cloudy storm at night. You must have been tempted for a wild swim in that pool stream at the end. Thanks again for sharing - Richard👍😄
Hello Richard, haven't we been lucky this past couple of weeks, very different from the weather we are currently experiencing 💧🤭👍 it was a lovley day and a great hike, some of the best veiws in the Brecon Beacons without a doubt. Was nice to find the wreckage and memorial and yes as you said take a minute to reflect on times past and sacrifices made.
A dip in the final pool was extremely tempting, sadly it was late in the day and there was a few people about, we didn't want to put anyone of their dinner 😬👍 stay safe and well, catch you soon, Ceri and Kat ♥️🌞👍☕⛰

Stunning scenery and great to see the memorial of Wellington Bomber, could you imagine if the crew had survived the crash only to find out that they crashed in a place that was so isolated and with no help around, it would of been so gutting. Another great watch guys.

Another lovely Welsh wander from my favourite tea drinking duo. Have you started doing guided walks now? Sad to see these plane wreckage sites isn’t it? Easy to forget that people lost their lives in those hills. The main one in the Peak District has become an Instagram photography opportunity, almost like a theme park attraction! Very sad. At least respectful walkers like our good selves treat them with the respect they deserve. Have a great week guys 🙂💚👍
Good morning Anthony, it was certainly eye opening to vista the memorial and site, makes you stop and think, just how blooming lucky we are, all the sacrifices made in times past ♥️🇨🇦 It is sad that some people dont even stop to think for a second, and worse still take bits home as keep sakes, naughty.

I knew the car park sounded familiar! We overnighted there a couple of years ago when we stopped off at Pontsticill Reservoir. We walked down past the waterfalls and walked back up the road way and it nearly killed us lol. Then it chucked down all night and we never got out again. Stunning scenery. We need to get back round there when we venture into Wales again.

Loved Fan y Big's peak, that rock jutting out is very famous, ideal spot for extensive views. How strange to have that Wellington Bomber wreckage amongst those hills, reminds me how wild the area actually is. It's also a great reminder of those brilliant and brave people who gave their lives for the war effort, God bless them. Hope all is well with you both, Winnie

The diving board is very much alot safer than it looks I wouldn't have gone in it if had have been even a little dodgy. The water near the end was much needed, if only if had have been more secluded we could have had a little swim 👍🤗

Fantastic walk though it did look quite hot. It was lovely to revisit this walk as we haven't done this one for a long time now. What I like about this walk is that you get to see a lot of different things. Waterfalls,mountains, "ironing boards" lol, crash sites & forests. I loved Kats "Welsh" Fan yeah Big.lol . I'm not sure if I've seen that plane wreck can I ask did you find a map of where to locate them because everything I've seen has been a bit obscure on their locations. I wish people wouldn't take things from the wreck sites though it's basically like robbing a grave! However I have seen small parts of plane really far away from anything else maybe things get blown about in storms. Really great views in the video! Good effort with giving the Welsh words a go. An f is prounced as a v and a y is "uh". 👊😊

We found the memorial site marked on an OS map, we will send you a photo. This was our first successful wreckage find, we had tried before but missed it, yes we have seen other sites up and down the UK too, its interesting to see how each area pays respects differently.

Great views of the green hills in this one C&K ☕ I also came across a memorial to a Canadian RCAF pilot on the SUW at Lowther Hill who crashed a Hawker Hurricane there in 1941 in low cloud. 🍁♥️☕☕🌞

Lovely looking route that folks. The BBs is probably the national park I know the least. We have a similar oft' visited plane crash site not too far away on Bleaklow. In fact the northern moors of the Peak District is littered with crash sites but the Bleaklow one is perhaps the best known. A nice contrast of uplands and wooded river valleys there. I like that. Good morning Chris, we are very lucky to have spent some considerable time in the BBs, it is a firm favourite and a place close to our hearts. Really pleased to have found the wreckage and memorial, we have missed it on foggy days. Yes the crash sites often and memorials are a stark reminder how lucky we are and grateful we should be for sacrifices made ♥️🇨🇦

Good morning Chris, yes the diving board ledge isn't half as dangerous as it looks. As we sat and had an off camera break the ledge was visited by all sorted, included a couple of shirtless flexers lol
The BBs are incredible, so lucky to have spent alot of time here of the years, are they far from you Chris? Be good to find some middle ground ♥️👍 maybe the malverns? 🤔
