  • Some call it Virtual RAM, some call it Dynamic RAM Expansion, some call it Extended RAM, and the story goes on and on. But, does it really matter? Like seriously, does it even make a difference? Well, that's what this video is all about.
    This is Varun from GTR, and in today's video of our Deep Dive series, we will be taking a closer look at how this Virtual RAM feature works, and why you, as a consumer, shouldn't really be concerned about it. Or should you be? Hmm. Let's find out!

    Super Informational💯. Wish there were few brands that actually understood what makes a good smartphone and cut out all the gimmicky features , but i guess such brands would'nt survive in the market because of consumers who are easily fooled by such gimmicks.

    Hello, can a 6- or higher ram capacity support a low-grade chipset like the Unisoc T606, or does it have a limit, like it only needs 6- to lower ram?

    the problem is that, to access Vram or Zram is that the phone has to be rooted and EX kernel manager or some other similar a[[ is required to configure Vram or Zram. whwile the oneplus expansion ram can be configured manually without the need to root the device.

    Ive bought Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 258 GB with 8gb RAM version about a month ago and I ve tried the +8 virtual RAM boost for about 3 weeks. I turned it off today and I HAVE TO ADMIT that the overall speed of my phone is now better (faster responce to typing, less lag on CZcams Revanced), glad to hear that even the long term health of the phone is better with the feature turned off.
    Anyway thank you for this video. I am not usually a big fan of Indian youtubers whose (even tho I have a English degree in pedagogy) accent is so bad I cant even understand them. This was not that case plus the video was really informative. Thank you.

    i genuinely love this video. it made me understand about how vram works. i have a new phone that has 8gb ram and i enabled the expansion of additional 8gb virtual ram. now that i think about it, my phone never even consumes up to 5gb ram, so there was really no reason to enable the additional virtual ram. made me realize that i was slowly deteriorating my phone's health while being brand new. thank you so much for the information!

    After some extensive research I can tell you there's no downside to this as explained to this video, because the thing they call "extended" ram already exists in android by default. These companies just give you some "extra control". This I why Samsung doesn't let you disable it completely, Xiaomi has it on by default
    It's not a gimmick, it's a lie. It's part of android.

    Even if you turn it off, swap is still at 3GB on my A54 basically the same when I have 2GB ram plus, it still has 3GB swap while higher options will actually make it bigger. So turning it off doesn't really do much just lowers the swap space to a minimum.

    So i don't have a clue about newest phone. When i stumble this expandable or virtual ram in my phone setting. I was skeptical, like, what's this? Is this the same concept of installing apps to your sd card which is deteriorate its life span? It isn't 8gb ram already enough?
    This video made me clear that it better turning virtual ram off. I also searched an article on internet that did benchmark on 2 different phone. A 4GB real ram + 4GB virtual ram perfomance's is still inferior to 8GB real ram when playing games.

      ram has already an extended expectancy. usually the battery and other components will wear before the ram.
      for example: my phone is from 2018, I swapped the battery one time, now the problem is the antenna, which can't be swapped so I have a poor signal and an even faster battery drain.

    • @photoniccannon2117
      @photoniccannon2117 Před 7 měsíci

      Not really. It's quite unlikely to fry your device storage in the lifespan of the device if you're using internal storage. This is mostly a concern on SD cards, which aren't really designed for this and have much more primitive wear leveling than the internal storage does.

    Calling it "virtual ram" and mentioning it on product specs is absolutely a scam. Vanlla Android just straight out killing aps and not suspending their state in swap like desktop OS do (and you are not gonna kill your SSD by putting your swap disk on there if your drive and OS properly support TRIM).
    Swapping is not gonna rewire the entire disk dozen of times per day (which is the level modern flash memory needs to die within a few years) by just suspending CZcams on flash a lot. This should just be a standart Android feature and not be advertised anywhere near the hardware RAM specs.
