    Matthew, a suggestion as far as wood chips. Perhaps if you did as Janey did and hire a tree service to remove your dying pines and birch and whatever shrubs you plan to remove they would run them thru their chipper and leave the chips for you. Plus you would establish a relationship with them that could move you up their list for future drops from other places.

    I would suggest weeding, clearing out your beds, and amending the soil before you begin planting anywhere. I know you want to get started having beauty around you but take your time. I know you are overwhelmed. Take a breath, you will get it all done but it will take time! Watch for snakes and creatures when you are rummaging in the abck forty! Love your new place ❤️

      I was going to say the same thing -- the beauty is there, even if it isn't the long-term plan!! The beds need some work, but the trees and the grass alone create such a peaceful place to enjoy. Be in the moment. You will look back one day and ask where the time has gone!!

    If you can stretch the budget, get a second hand Golf Cart.That way you can carry a lot of garden tools around with you ,a bit like mobile garden shed.That way when you find yourself a considerable distance from the house and realist you need the one thing you didn't bring with you , you will probably have it on the cart! Of course plenty of walking is good exercise but with the amount of work you have ahead of you might be nice to conserve some energy.

    I'm so excited for you and your new garden ideas! Anxious to see how you solve your irrigation issue. We have a similar issue. We bought 40+ acres in 2020. It had nothing but a huge pile of dead trees and branches. No electric, no water, no house. So, we'd camp at a nearby campground, to to the property and do what we could. Now, 3 years later, we have our camper permanently on the property with a canopy over it. We have a used tractor with a bush hog, a Mule (Kawasaki) and last month we had an acre pond re-established. All in good time. We are retired, so can work when we feel like it. BTW, the property is in Georgia BUT we live 7 hours south in Florida. So we've had to become Florida/Georgia gardeners! Actually, I'm the gardener, my husband loves to hunt, so he has established food plots, hunting blinds, an owl house and trails throughout the property. He attracts the deer and I try to keep them away from my plants!! You may find some sort of side-by-side very helpful in your gardening endeavors.. Made us a lot more efficient with our projects - which become a never ending list! Best of Luck! Thank you for taking the time to share this adventure with all of us.

    5:35 I wouldn’t do a garden bed per se around the pool. I would do a border with soft curves with river rock to make it look like a dry creek. You could like it with a rubber liner and install a pump so it actually has water running through it and you can plant some water plants, but there’s no water visible on the surface, but more of a waterless pond.

    I have two old and leaky spigots on the outside of my old house, and a kind plumber gave me an easy and cheap fix. There are attachments that are a few dollars that have valve levers. It screws onto the end of your existing spigot, and after you turn your water off, flipping the valve finishes the job and stops the leak. I even have a splitter type coming off my spigot in the back. I would recommend getting brass ones. Don’t know how it would work with a watering system though. It’s worked so well for us, we’ve had them on for a few years even though it is supposed to be a temporary fix! 🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸

    This is very exciting. So happy for you. These videos are reminding me of my own journey when I move from a tiny urban lot to a home with acrage 6 years ago. Here are two things I wish I did as soon as I moved in. 1) start a windbreak/hedgerow to buffer the corn field to minimize the amount of dust from tilling and drift from spraying! (2) even though i planned garden rooms, i worked on all of them at the same time. I often got discouraged cause it was a lot of work doing all of them at the same time and i only saw a little progress. I wish i would have focused the majority of my efforts on one of the spaces, and start with the one i would see and use the most. Now, each year i do that, eg i would only by plants and materials for x space, and work minimally on the others.
    Looking forward to following you along on this journey.

    You will look back in a couple of years and realize how far you have come! Gardening on a larger scale than my previous terrace garden I had to start thinking in terms of 7 or 9 plants in a group as opposed to 3 max but it's very liberating not to worry about finding space for something! We are fortunate that there are so many wonderful shrubs and trees that can give structure to a garden. Be bold! I have had professionals come in to remove the poison ivy -- they found a huge vine on a large oak in our ravine which was not something I was going to tackle but was providing a lot of seeds.

    Matthew, just an observation, we live further north in Ohio and we have friends that also put beds around their pool. Now these beds are probably 30-40ft away from the pool, however as beautiful as they are they do attract pollinators, and then the pollinators are also drawn to the pool area. They’ve had way to many problems and I thought it might be something to consider. Love the new property ❤

    I won't buy mulch in bulk anymore, I was told the soil and mulch both were organic, no pesticides etc. But every area that it was used the plants have been stunted all this year, I'm in the process of removing and adding other types of soil and later mulch this fall, it's been a huge waste of time, effort and money for me. I know it's not your problem, more to let new gardeners know not every bulk provider is honest in what they are providing, maybe invest in getting sample tests first before investing in large loads before committing fully.

    • @masterofnone706
      @masterofnone706 Před rokem

      Getting a ph test done after putting new compost or mulch in is very important, that way you can amend the soil for your plants specific needs. I mulch with a fine compost twice a year at first I struggled cause it through the ph off I. My beds which effected certain plants and I just had to make sure to amend around those plants.

      I buy Preen mulch at Lowe’s by the bag. It does have Preen in it, and the chips are relatively small, so it looks pretty good, and does degrade over time, another good thing. It is almost never on sale, and costs about $4 to $5 a bag. But, for $20 I can get four bags and they go a long way. I have put down cardboard since last year and that has helped with weeds.

    • @maureenmckenna5220
      @maureenmckenna5220 Před rokem +1

      I am focusing on plants that don’t get eaten by rabbits or deer. Day lilies get eaten when they bloom, and the deer eat the greenery almost to the ground. I can spray and it helps, but after they bloom, I don’t want to continue to spray the greenery just to keep it looking good. So, they will be coming out and given to some other gardener. I have found butterfly bushes are not eaten. I bought five dwarf bushes and they have done great. Also don’t require much water. Dwarf spirea also are double blooming and drought tolerant. No deer or rabbit issues.

    I don’t much like day lilies but there are a few that I really like and have ordered in the past only to find when they bloom the next spring they are definitely not the ones I ordered. That makes me so upset especially since they bloom in colors that don’t go with any other thing I have. 🌺💚🙃

    Hi Matthew, some arborist will go out of their way to bring chips if you offer to pay for delivery. Much cheaper than mulch.

      Ponds in this area attract geese like crazy. They get very territorial and make extreme messes.

    Here in Florida if you pay them $20 chip drop will show up and stop putting you off. I got the first one pretty quick but when I put in another request they kept making me redo my request until I offered a little money and then mysteriously they showed up.

    Matthew did you bring your fountain from your other house? Would that bed by your outdoor stairs be a good place to put the fountain, or do you have other plans for it?

    I bought a lot of daylilies I wanted to make a swoop across our front yard like Jenny of creekside nursery we don’t have drainage issues like her just a lot of grass to cut and a steep ditch to mow. It’s scary but my husband put the kabobs to that idea. I planted them in a big grouping was sweet til the deer found them
