It’s not really a variant though since it’s historical and there were many different sizes of Shogi as a standard. I used to play Dai Shogi all the time for example. Chu (12x12) and larger is no drops and more fun that way.
I could imagine this game would be super epic if you manage to memorize all the pieces. Pieces like "flying crocodile" and "drunken elephant" and whatnot. Have you looked at how the individual pieces move? Many of them are connected to only one side of the board and may only move accordingly whereas others can take sharp turns while moving or jump and continue in their tracks. It's ridiculous!
@@jivethespacesnake1358indeed, there was a company in 2001 that used to make and sell these sets. It’s only a shame this requires other people to be able to play otherwise this would be a worthwhile woodcraft project. Most people today are too lame, short attention span, and screen addicted to have fun like this.
Simon Carlile Could be fun to make an AI for this game using the AlphaGo Zero formula of inputting the rules and letting it play itself thousands of times. Could be interesting to see the result of. Obviously, it would be impossible to interpret the moves, even for the best professional players, but still interesting as a challenge in machine learning.
@Smooshy I wouldn't exactly call this a masterpiece of a game. It's just big and complicated, that's all really. But yeah, it could be interesting to see. I'd imagine a neural network AI would be much stronger than a traditional chess engine when it comes to this game. It's much too big to calculate with the traditional approach.
Also I've been attempting to hand craft unique chess style pieces for each and every board piece to make an easier version for English players to give a shot... simple to just have a photo of a pieces shape and a move box next to it in a manual. Hardest part for me was making a board that big...x.x If I finish this thing I'll probally make a more expensive material version then pass it down as a family heirloom stating 'it's amazing for critical thinking and memorization.'
@@CircuitReborn It really doesn't simulate a real battlefield. It's a modelled version that was made to simulate tactics. The whole part of you only moving a piece at a time makes it way too slow and way unrealistic, especially for such a huge board size. It doesn't make any sense in terms of realism why all pieces can't move simultaneously. It simply comes down to practicality. The problem with this board size is that it removes most of the tactics and replaces it with memorisation of the pieces, as well as a lot of random chance since nobody can calculate the moves in this game like you'd do in standard shogi and chess. It's simply too complex. If you want to play a bigger shogi game, don't go for this one. It's just a silly gimmick, and it likely was even back when it was invented centuries ago.
What impresses me the most is the fact thatthe playera don't exit their seats from the game for hours. That patience, diligence and determination put into a board game is very very magnificent.
Some pieces have different names, but duplicate moves. The same for some promoted pieces. Also, captured pieces cannot be dropped; otherwise, a game might last EITHER a very short time, OR an eon.
if the simplest game of chess was say with only 2 pieces, and something as complex as life or the universe itself, i wonder what a game would like which is right inbetween these 2 complexity wise, or something that is even 5% as complex as the universe or everything
@@Rutibex you think that game is 5% as complex as the entire universe? dont get me wrong that game looks complex but 5% of our entire universe is ridiculously big, i appreciate the recommendation though
Yes, and Carlsen considering to play it. I'd like to see the look on his face when he sees the setup for the first time if he'd try it. It would become a classic for sure. I didn't understand a word said in this video, but the visual part says enough to understand the comedy.
Forget chess, if you want to extend your life as long as possible, challenge the Reaper to a game of Taikyoku shogi.
How about no
I don't have the patience for that.
only if i get to live if i win
Thank Buddha this shogi variant has no drop rule. 😅

I can imagine a future where supercomputers play this game against each other to test pruning algorithms.

It simulates a real battlefield perfectly with so many pieces and possible moves.

Imagine Gary Kasparov and Magnus Carlsen playing this giant!! And love this giant!
Never Carlsen. No fad boys. Karpov or Kramnik instead
This is amazing... I now have a new life goal to play this at least once...

jesus they were bored
if you flip the board with enough force, you could basically have a grapeshot blast of ceramic
It's so complex that they needed a book to play. I would imagine that it would be hard not to accidentally make illegal moves in this game.
How many people are going to end up here from the one fun fact in 51 world wide classics?
Yyyyyyyup
You get it. By the way, I don't ever want to play this but I would love to see a full game played.
This is simultaneously awesome and absurd!
This episode got me into Trivia no Izumi.

I’m good with standard Shogi
Now try it with chess timers!
