So here we are, 38 games last season. Won 18 lost 14. 60 points. This season, won 18, lost 8! 60 points...32 games. Last season, 8th, missed out on europe. This season, we will qualify for either CL or EL. This is progress! I've heard Ange out, Levy out and frankly fed up of it. Ange said at the start we'd have up and down days. 4-0 hurts, as does Wolves as does Brighton, as does Fulham. However, we don't have a God given right to win every game that some seem to think. We have to be realistic BUT we are heading in the right direction and we HAVE to take a deep breath and evaluate where we were and where we are. We are much better than we were can't be argued. That Ange has to look hard at himself sometimes, do you honestly think he doesn't? If he doesn't, how can he improve? If he doesn't, then criticism is justified but do you honestly think DL won't question him too? As I write Villa are 2 up which hurts further. If we continue like yesterday then that is a concern but this season is going to go down to the wire. I'd rather be where we are than where we were but we ALL need to regroup, take a deep breath and see just how far together, we can go this season. COYS.

Much of that only really applies if you think Ange will change his tactics somewhat to leave us less open. We also went out of both cups quickly, have an awful run of games coming up, plus we had had no European games this season. I think Ange definitely needs another season, but considering the better players we have in many positions and no Europe to tire us out this season, and the fact we may not get many more wins this season (I hope we do) he has pretty much been average in his outcomes. Plus he needs to stop talking down to journalists like he is the only person with a brain in the room. Irritating.

You grow by learning from your mistakes. That’s not happening with defensive set pieces. 15 out of 16 corners were headed by a Newcastle player. And this was just after Postecoglou said defending set pieces was not an issue when he was asked at the pre-match press conference - and he was asked because it keeps happening.
His response are beginning to sound annoying and glib and he needs to speak with his team’s actions on the pitch- starting with defensive set pieces.

Hi Ali, players look as if they are not convinced bout Ange’s tactics. We have been poor away from home for months (Villa aside). - at home we’re not gr8 either we’re scrapping wins against average teams whilst giving away chance after chance.
Successful teams are built on sound defending - that’s starting point - Ange does not seem to bother about that - a 1-2-8 formation will not work in Prem Lge (no matter who we buy in summer).

It is with the greatest of reluctance that I have to say Ange has perhaps underestimated the defensive demands of playing in the Premier League. After all, this is the best league in the world and the offensive quality of teams in this league, at least among the teams in the top half, is not something Ange has faced before. If I'm right, he'll have to go back to the drawing board and recalibrate his game in order to achieve the right balance between offense and defence. Perhaps, it's time to dial back the offensive element while he fine-tunes the defence.

And 1961 was the last league title, but Spurs won 2 Europa leagues since then as well, and were a good side in the 80s.
The point I made is that there is no "dna". The teams that win are changing all the time. Chelsea and City weren't "winning teams" until this century. Aston Villa used to be a winning team. Newcastle and Leeds used to be winning teams. The "dna" thing is rubbish.
As for the "winning mentality", world cup winner Lloris didn't have it? World cup winner Romero doesn't have it? Copa America winner Lo Celso doesn't have it? How many players have left Spurs and gone on to win trophies? Did they suddenly acquire a "winning mentality" after leaving Spurs?
Our best period in recent history was under Poch, a manager who was given 5 years with little to no funding. We're now consistently a top 4/5 side in terms of net spend and are spending hundreds of millions more than we spent under Poch. Imagine giving Ange a few years to build his squad with that funding.
Arsenal haven't won a title since 2004 and were consistantly finishing below us until last season. They had a plan, backed their manager, and 4 years into a project started challenging.
Think how many players you can get in and out in 1 window, and then consider we have 4 windows in the next 2 seasons. More than half our squad will be overhauled in that time. There's no reason to think we can't challenge following that kind of period.

An excellent video again Alasdair. Thank you. Angeball is so much better than the dross of last season notwithstanding the frustrations, inconsistencies and sometimes heavy defeats. My five cents: 1) Werner is 28 and his shooting won't improve. Personally I would not exercise his option. There must be better alternatives. Perisic always looked more threatening and willing to take on his man, and put in better crosses. Perisic couldn't defend but Werner often loses the ball and when he does he can't get it back and it's tended to be consequential 2) Sonny is being marked out of the game when he's forced to play centrally, mainly because he's not physically strong enough. When it's played on the left he doesn't get man-marked as much, received the ball and moves into a dangerous area 3) Porro and Romero need competition for their places. Porro can raise his game, as he did after he scored vs Forest, but too often he goes missing of late 4) but the biggest worry to me is our susceptibility to set pieces, especially corners. We don't have big, tall players who can clear the ball, nor at the other end to attack the ball. In the Forest game such was the lack of confidence to score from corners that we always resorted to a short corner. So while I believe in Ange, I feel for him to maintain a line of no concern about set pieces (either defending or attacking) is disappointingly disingenuous. Given your calls/expectations for Spurs priorities for next season, I'd love to see Conor Gallagher and Ivan Toney. Apparently the latter could be available for much less now? And I'd love Brian Mbeumo. Have Spurs ever had a Brian?

Ali, your comment about us lacking leadership at the back is important but I think it goes beyond just the defence. I personally think there is a lack of leadership throughout the team. Son is a great captain when it comes to leading by example, but he is not the sort of player to deliver tough love and galvanize a struggling squad. The team in general reminds me of the criticism the Arsenal team got under Emery. A boys club of young lads laughing and joking with each other, playing FIFA and painting pictures of each other, but not having the steel and determination needed to go from being a good team to an elite one. That mentality that Jose spoke of in the All or Nothing doc, when he said that as much as you love to win, you have to _hate_ to lose. I am a realist though and I know Rome wasn't built in a day, but I think the leadership needs to be addressed in the transfer market.

Regarding Arsenal I have a strange family history in that my dad was a Gooner who was happy to let one son support Tottenham and the other, my brother, support the Hammers; no pressure, no rancor. Subsequently having lived all over NE London I have lots of Arsenal friends and even worked in a die-hard Gooner pub for a few months so it's been hard to escape their success (I still have a horrible memory after one of the Wenger season-end triumphs of a pair of mooning buttocks somewhere near Clissold Park, truly witnessing the "Arse' arses". I always try to teach my son to respect opponents when he plays football and to do that off the field after a game or when watching a game. God knows it's not easy and it's often through gritted teeth but we have to focus on what we need to do better and learn from other teams, systems and clubs.
