In this Valheim tips and tricks video guide I will show you how to get the secret Sea Serpent shield in Valheim. This is one of the best looking shields in Valheim and counts as a tower shield. The best shield in Valheim is currently the black metal tower shield. To craft it I will show you how to get sea serpent scales location, how to get iron location and how to get fine wood so you can craft yourself a sea serpent shield and upgrade it to level 3. A tip to get sea serpent scales you must kill sea serpents. The reason why sea serpent scales and the trophy is so hard to get is because they will sink to the bottom of the ocean if you kill the sea serpent at sea (only the sea serpent meat floats), to stop this happening you need to get the sea serpents on land, to do this you need an abyssal harpoon which can be used to hook the sea serpent and drag it onto land, then once killed on land you can pickup the sea serpent trophy and scales as well as the sea serpent meat. Another tip and trick you can use it the dragr bow, the best bow in the game to damage the serpent in this combat gameplay in Valheim. Note that the tower shield cannot parry attacks like the small shield so the best shield type in valheim is the buckler shield for its utility.

There is one helm that uses the drake trophies in this manner but more would be nice.
More epic armor requiring trophies sounds awesome but there is already a cool mod that let's you spend trophies to level a random skill, with the more rare or difficult of a trophy giving more experience. You can actually customize the amount per trophy item/type yourself in the mod config file. Just thought it was worth a mention as I think that's a cool feature they should make official. Offering them to an altar or something.

the real benefit is that the movement penalty is only 10% instead of 20% like other tower shields

I encountered a serpent early game and it almost sank me, i tried to escape and ended up killing it with my bow at a coastline then i made the shield. Only now do i realize how lucky i was haha.

Sea serpent armor for sure that would be cool, also a buckler version so you can parry. I just started watching your videos and they are very well done.
I think some changes are definitely needed like making objects float in the water as well as making the Serpent a little bit stronger since as a duo we took it down on a Karve with nothing but regular bows and wooden arrows in literally 1 minute.
i would really like tat w/ the sea serpent weapons an stuff.....just makes going after the things a bit more worth it

@@Ausskip87 so we have harpooned deer and dragged them to him to "feed" him and he will attack them. If he doesnt have enough room to swim around he can die very easily from monsters

I created a pond area right by my base and dragged 4 serpants into it, they just swim around looking pretty cool.. Occasionally one or two seem to despawn but eventually they show back up...
It looks rediculous cause they all glitch into one another since it's kind of a small area for as big as they are..
Just got mine 3 days ago! Took about 2.5 hours (harpoon retrieval and killing enough sea serpents). Not that difficult just tedious searching and sailing for them. Now this video drops.

How about full serpent armour with a set effect? Ex: no negative affects while wet, and extra resistance to fire

Allowing the serpent scale shield to parry would be the best buff for it, since it would make it viable as a hybrid between tower shield and buckler. That being said, i want serpent scale armor for the aesthetic alone.
Question, what is the best shield? You mentioned in this video that there is better items out there.
I already built a moat around my base using a natural river and the nearby ocean. Now I’m going to drag a sea serpent into it lmao
I can't wait for the ocean biome to be finished, serpent hunting is fun especially with a team member with the harpoon, hook it, get close to land then drag it on shore and kill it. Like I said in the other vids, harpoon is King.

Its also possible to kill the serpent in shallow water if one doesnt have the harpoon. Lure it close to land/shallow water, jump of the boat, kill it when its close to shore, if it swims away just jump into your boat and aggro it again and repeat. If the scales are just out of your reach on the bottom, climp to the highest point of your boat and jump into the water aiming at the scales/head, press E repetedly until you reach the surface again.

This must happen at specific locations maybe. I criss cross the wide open ocean to travel to The Elder Boss on a damn far away huge island. First in a Karve. The boat wasn’t there when return after boss hunting, the mobs maybe destroyed it in area. But an epic long trip and adventure ensued to return home on an island of just Black Forest and Swamp. Long story short returned home on a raft and didn’t see any Sea Serpent and probably a good thing on the slow ass raft.
I think a great buff for it would just be to simply give it the parry ability, that way its lower overall stats make sense in relation to the higher tier shields but it offers a distinct advantage for a while longer at least, however, I think it should one of the smaller 1.5 parry though, not higher than that.
Remove movespeed reduction from it and problem solved

The stats are good for being a tower shield. It provides the 2nd best block for a tower shield and has the added bonus of offering a 10% move penalty rather then the normal 20% and the cost in resources is minimal. the biggest hiccup are the scales and you can get enough to make one by taking down a single sea serpent. I killed a sea serpent with a 3rd level crude bow when one chased my raft. It just appeared and aggrod me like 20 seconds from shore so I had to turn around let the wind do the rest while I pelted away with arrows. I made it to shore and killed the thing in water that was shallow enough I could pick everything up. The raft had a sliver of health but that was because I still used it as a firing platform well after hitting shore I think it was why it didn't beat feet (or maybe fin?) to deep water even after being hurt badly since it thought it still had a chance to drown me. So food for thought if you want to get the shield. Though I would use a karve or longboat if possible.
As to the Sea serpent shield itself, it is probably the only tower shield I would be tempted to use. Since tower shields seem underwhelming in general and come with such a high movement penalty. The only thing I think they do better is when you are tanking multiple enemies and can't get timing down since they will near always be swinging at slightly different times making parrying all but impossible. So it will give you consistently higher protection but I figure in such cases its better to run and try to weed out or pick off single opponents anyways. It might be different if your fighting with others but I mainly go solo so I can't say for certain.
I tried hunt serpents twice and game found it funny to give me full mist for the whole day...
Sounds about right. My first experience was like some horror story. Sailing at night. Pitch black, the wind shifts so the sails go slack. Ocean is fairly smooth and suddenly there are lights under the water.
My buddy and I accidentally kited a serpent to land and that shield has been a massive reason for our progression, acquired it before we challenged Bonemass, haven't been able to kill another serpent inland ever since that first encounter
When I killed my first sea serpent, I didn't have my harpoon with me (silly me) so I sailed to the shore and killed him there with melee (since he followed my ship). The scales sank to the bottom, but it was shallow enough that I could get them by swimming over them, clicking on them. Too bad you can't parry with the shield, so doubt I'll use it over the iron one, unless I need to tank for my friends. But definitely the coolest looking one. ^^
Edit: I didn't know they had specific spawners, though, so I'll have to look for it again in where I found it before.. if I can remember where that was. ^^
Only spawner near land in my world is a 2 star serpent near a swap, so yeah died multiple times trying to kill it 😢

Serpent Scale Armor would be dope. Additionally the Mistland biome has zero unique mobs if any, but clues indicate spiders in the future. (arachnophobe so that's yucky) It'll be interesting to see what comes of those unique materials when added, plus the flametal ore that can be found in the deep south. The talk of new unseen biomes is buzzing about too, lots of potential for this game

Would be cool if you could attach these to the sides of the longboat and if another sea dwelling creature attacks that section of boat the Sheila's mitigated some of that damage

I found that it was really effective if there are other mobs nearby.. i harpooned the serpant to a Black Forest and there were 4 5 greydwarfs waiting and they brought down the serpent’s health by themselves and i just one shot it with a mace to finish..
Honestly, before I got the harpoon I just would bait Serpents to shallow waters next to land. Never failed me. If loot was just out of reach from me when I was swimming, I would hop back on land then jump into the water and it would drop me below the water surface enough to pick up what ever sank.
It functions as a tower shield....but doesn't hurt your movement nearly as much.
Mobility is key to survival.
I feel the same way about the drake trophy silver helmet. I've beaten like 100 drakes and only gotten 1 trophy so I beat moder with a iron helmet and don't plan on hunting more drakes as I've already unlocked a padded helmet

Only buff it needs, is to delete the movement speed penalty. With that block ratio and without the -10% movement slow just worth the effort farming it. But right now its rly just a flex like you said

This game just keeps on giving.
So I had to cheat some items in game as my world got corrupted, however when I was looking through some of the ores and metals I noticed something called FlametalOre and Flametal, I spawned in an ore piece to see what it looks like and it literally looks like a pink diamond. I'm not sure if its even in the worlds yet but it was something super interesting to note!
it's in the ashland biome in game. theres sortings there that drop coal and cores when killed.
Already collect it melted but no useful at the moment until they add more content.

I've been playing Valheim for hours straight, dealt with sea serpents whenever I go onto the ocean and I didn't even know the Serpents dropped a throphy or scales. I guess that explains alot
I have not defeated giant of trees yet, and when I were mining some bronce and I saw some greydwarfs I tried to kill them and then... I heard giant footsteps and then I saw it, A TROLL! I ran out of the forest as fast as I could

So the sea serpents spawn where you found them instead of just anywhere in the ocean. Very interesting. I wonder if you have a video on finding and farming krakens.

I was so lucky I didnt know there were seprents in the game and one followed me into a shallow river where i could kill it and get the scales. I just had the first bow and wooden arrows
I got the shield without using the harpoon. It just swam towards land and we killed it near enough land that we could build a tall structure to jump off so we sink to the bottom so we're able to grab the scales.

I made one but just replaced it with the black metal shield. I agree it looks amazing though.
just a note: the Karve *cannot* outrun the red sea serpents, only the blue ones. The Longship is the only boat that can outrun both.
If you could have serpent armor, you should be able to avoid being wet in the rain or coming out of the water. Also, reduced stamina usage in the water.

The scales sinking by design or is this something they should fix do you think?
I want them to do an update for the whole ocean biome and add more monsters, the dungeon should be ghost ships that you first have to battle to disable the jump aboard to get a unique resource. And add a boss of the ocean. Also improve the fishing which everyone ingores because it sucks right now. With different types of fishing rods what are upgradable like the other tools. Also adding fishing nets would be cool.
you can find metal in the swamp with the wishbones dont need a kript to get metal
The best iron is from the chest in the crypts tho they give you 15-20

Those are the plains biome, you'll find them later in the game
Don't think the shield needs a buff. It's super easy to get, so I'm amazed that is has so good stats to start with.
Serpent scale shield definitely needs a buff to be a sidegrade compared to dark iron, their current stats have too great of a difference for a 5% less, but still great (15% vs 20%) move speed penalty.
should be still worse in raw block power, but a more significantly reduced move speed penalty, like currently, tower shields have 20% move speed penalty and they can't even parry...
they have better raw block armor, but the parry bonus, which is a lot more important, makes the bucklers better for endgame... tower shields in general needs a lot more buff or a rework for them to be usefull.
A realy good option would be to make tower shields in general grant 25% phisical resists too; for serpent scale to be an endgame viable thing, it should have a unique resist, like the bark armor pieces -> lightning resist and fire resist is quite suitable in theme for it and would make it a get-go shield vs Yagluth... it's pretty dumb, that you can get the boss buff vs Yaglut from him...
I am at the point that i have full bronze armor however not yet went to the swamp. I did defeat the serpent already at the cost of my carve. However i feel like it is a fair trade having to go to the swamp and het iron for a big improvent of the bronze shield

I think that is planned, fire and ice magic was datamined at one point, but not implemented yet.

You are actually making it more complicated and tedious than it really is. No need to shoot it first or drag him to a river. Just harpoon him, drag him to the shore with max 2 speed so the line doesn't break and either: a) kill him with melee (he doesn't fight back) b) let mobs kill him c) wait a bit and it will explode. Just remember to drag him a bit in land, he will try to escape but every few meters he will stop.
