  • Hey Everyone!
    This'll be my last Mario and Sonic video for a short while, but I'll be back in the future to cover more games. For now I'll be shifting focus to Donkey Kong Country. Hope you enjoy!

    You make some good points here, and your videos are definitely getting better and better.
    Side note - I got Sonic '06 a little less than 10 years ago because I wanted to see for myself if it was as bad as the internet says and it is. HOWEVER it's one of those cases where it's so bad it's good. As far as Adventure goes I didn't get a Dreamcast until 2014 but I played the xbox 360 version in 2010. I wasn't used to the way Sonic controlled and compared to modern titles I didn't care for it. But giving it a second go on the Dreamcast definitely changed my mind. I can see how it was revolutionary for the time especially when Sonic was exclusively in 2D. I still haven't played Sonic Heroes but I remember when I was little the other kids in school would talk about this "new game" for the PS2 called Sonic Heroes.....makes me feel old now.

      Hey thanks for the comment. Sorry I'm just now catching up on some comments that passed my by and I'm glad to see you're still around and enjoying these videos.
      So uh, I haven't played 06 yet but I did just play frontiers and I'm SO tempted to go through a bunch of these Sonic games. I just don't know if I want to cover them on this channel because that'll take over my content for a while haha.

    It's Ironic that you brought up Crash. During development it was Jokingly referred to as the "Sonic's-ass game" because you'd be forced to look at the character's backside during gameplay.

      Lol yup, it was their code name iirc. And if I'm not mistaken it goes full circle with Sega Publishing the Nintendo Switch Port of N. Sane Trilogy in Japan

    Besides the obvious concerns of hardware capability, I wonder if a fully 3D Sonic game that felt good to play was even doable on the Saturn before the introduction of the analogue "Nights" controller, which probably wouldn't have been available during development of a game scheduled for the holidays of '96.

    • @NintenDeen
      @NintenDeen  Před rokem +1

      I think a fun - albeit clunky - game could have been doable. Especially similar to the fashion of crash bandicoot with faster speeds

    A note about the unreleased Sonic Xtreme - SEGA needed a smash hit Sonic game for the Saturn and to rake in Christmas sales. They couldn't get Xtreme out the door, so they scrambled to release *something*, and out came the 3D Blast Saturn port.
    Of course, it would be unfair to review a game that never came out. But I don't think Sonic is getting a tough time from the internet just because he's Sonic (for once) - he's getting a tough time because the Saturn's Sonic library was ONLY made of a remake (3D Blast), a port collection (Jam), and Sonic R. What was even the point of SEGA hardware without a lot of Sonic games?
    Meanwhile, Nintendo was firing off on all cylinders with Mario 64, Paper Mario, various sports games, three Mario Party games, and Mario Kart. Imagine an alternate timeline where Mario 64 was never released, so instead they threw out Super Mario All-Stars 2 and Mario Tennis and just hid until the Gamecube came out
    Good video! I wouldn't have considered that Yoshi's Safari should be considered in the conversation of the transition into 3D. But I do wish Sonic R felt better - its a footrace that controls like a kart race

      Spot on in your assessment of Saturn's failure. I kinda alluded to this but I didn't want to dwell too much on it, but it's really Sega's typical over promising/underachieving practices, whether it comes to their release timelines or trying to create a game that's too demanding for the current hardware. They wanted Sonic Adventure (Well, Xtreme) but the Saturn couldn't handle it. I think they spent too much effort trying to stay competitive in the market instead of actually trying to create quality that would cause the market to chase them

      Timing was what caused the lack of a proper main Sonic title for the Saturn, not only due to the cancelation of X-treme but because after working on the classic Sonic games for years Sonic Team decided to take a few years off the series to try different things and make other types of games. With the main dev team not available due to being occupied with other projects for almost a whole hardware generation and the B team (STI) running into a myriad of issues with their Sonic projects we ended up with only what the C team (Traveler's Tails) was working on, which were two spin-offs that should have been nothing but filler if thing went according to plan. When you add the fragmented mess that was their market strategy at the time that caused the next generation to be rushed into being earlier than usual the one big title, Sonic Adventure, had to be pushed into the Dreamcast.
      At the end of the day Sonic Adventure released about two years after Super Mario 64, which nowadays wouldn't be that long but at that time was a lot and caused the hedgehog to jump to 3D one generation later.
      Timing was what screwed the Saturn.

    20:35 I think saying "Sonic Mania [is/was] the best Sonic game ever made" is speaking from either 2D fans or those who grew up with the Genesis and clamored for 23 years for another banger in this style. Which, they did finally get it in spades! Sonic Mania MIGHT be the best 2D Classic Sonic, it's certainly in the race in just about every facet besides story and pure originality. It's a loveletter that knocked it out of the park.
    Yet at the sane time, saying Mania (or 3&K) trails something like Adventure or Generations is NOT saying Mania was unsuccessful at anything, either. Sonic has been a whole lot of things other than '2D Genesis style'. Many times in disappointing, outright bad, or even infamous games...but he HAS had some bangers too. The whole 'best Sonic game' argument really comes a lot more down to what style of Sonic gameplay grabs you the most JUST as much as it comes down to what the best game in that style is! I love the speed stages of Sonic Adventure 1/2 and the boost stages of Unleashed and Generations particularly and I think it is wrong to objectively say that 2D Classic Sonic levels are 'worse' or 'better' than them.

      @NintenDeen  Před rokem +1

      You hit the nail on the head in the second paragraph. I think Mania was an excellent game btw, I just don't think it's fair that fans of the classics pretend there weren't any phenomenal games from 1994 until 2017. I mean shoot, even the Advance and Rush Series could challenge Mania imo (I think Mania was better but I'd understand if someone preferred those ones)

    • @kakhome1
      @kakhome1 Před rokem +1

      @@NintenDeen Rush would probably be the closest, and it's a different variation of 2D Sonic compared to the Classics, Mania, or even Advance. Sadly I don't own a Nintendo DS and that's not an easy one to emulate :( I'd say Advance is mostly inferior, there's a distinct visual style and a few more mechanics but also a bit too much allowance in just going right to win...and Dimps pits.
      I think it's best to say Mania scratched a longstanding itch for a LOT of players and it was also the first widely acclaimed Sonic game in six years (since Generations) and even moreso on the heels of Boom taking up the prior three years, so it did get a lot of benefit from both timing and nostalgia.

    Great video brotha, I hope you buy a Saturn, for NiGHTS into Dreams, and Christmas NiGHTS into Dreams... which features Sonic in the 3D Christmas stages. Also re: Sonic R, I hope u know that there's a better PC version which has weather effects like rain and snow. :D

      And yes! I've played the PC port for Sonic R. Definitely the superior version

    • @JamesChessman
      @JamesChessman Před rokem +2

      @@NintenDeen Well I hope you do, it's such a treasure to have a Saturn for NiGHTs and Christmas NiGHTS, and the 3D NiGHTS gamepad is lovely. Plus the gameplay is fundamentally a bit glitchy, so that's a good reason to have real hardware, because you want the performance accurate to the original product (and u want to know that the glitches are properly-present, in the original). If I was using emulator, I would wonder if the glitches were from the emulator. And none of the other console ports are exactly the same as the Saturn original. :)
