    Yes a heavy homage indeed, but my rule of thumb is that it is NOT a REPLICA. Whenever i consider a "Look a Like" watch, as long as it has its own branding, I can sit comfortable with my economic place within society & wear it proudly so to speak. Great vid Ivan, keep up the gòod work.

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  Před 6 lety +7

      Thanks for that! Yes, I agree, strictly speaking as long as it's not trying to ape the original in *every way* (especially with regards to putting a false brand name on the watch) it should still be considered an homage. The litmus test is that no one can actually try to sell this off as a Nomos!

    This was a very good review, thoughtful and fair. Objectively, it also seems to be a pretty decent watch for the price. My problem is that $100 is a lot for a watch without any real identity. I can more easily justify the $20 Tevise sub homage that you and Jody both covered, as it's actually a decent beater or fun impulse buy. However, for $100, you can get a Seiko, Orient, or very nice Casio G-shock, etc. with a real identity. That's a bit of a dilemma for me. Thanks!

    • @ohhenry2
      @ohhenry2 Před 6 lety +3

      By "identity," do you mean watches that are not homages? If that's the concern, then you could look into Guanqin's non-homage watches, such as the $62 Guanqin reviewed by JustOneMoreWatch. If by "identity" you mean brand name recognition, then I would ask whether the thing itself (the quality of the watch, say, getting Sapphire and manual wind on a Guanqin vs. Hardlex and non-hacking on a slightly more expensive Seiko) don't overcome that hang-up? If by "identity" you mean history and track-record and say, in-house manufacturing, well, people at one point said the same of "Jap Crap" vs. American or European manufacturing, and they sure as heck don't say that now. Not disagreeing with you, just voicing the counterpoints that came to mind upon reading yours.

    Good point that while it's a rather shameless knock off, it apes a watch that's both well beyond most people's means and so obscure that it's unlikely many people are knowledgeable enough to identify the design origin. My exact thoughts only reverse, with my bulky 7 1/2 inch wrist I only wore 46mm plus watches BUT last year saw PerthWAtch #18 Vid on the 38mm Maurice Masterpiece Moonphase & decided to Experiment & try a girly 39mm Orient Star Retrograde (from Creation Watches), & to my Pleasant SURPRISE got used to it after a month & now own several Vintage small dress watches ... Bully for you bucking the modern over-sized watch trend. I have embarrassingly tiny wrists but still felt insecure when I got my Seiko SNK805 field watch with a 37mm case. For about a day and then it seemed perfectly proportioned. Funny thing is, I've taken to wearing vintage (1960s and 1970s) mechanical men's watches off eBay and those (typically 32-36mm) are dwarfed by that SNK805. 36mm or less was the norm for men's watches only a few decades ago. Thick-wristed guys had absolutely no issue wearing them in generations past. We (myself included) are such slaves to the prevailing fashion trends of the day.

      I agree with your comments re size.
      I recently picked up a similar Nomos knock-off on e-bay UK, a Nomos Glashute. Automatic, no power reserve or hand winding but display case back and 40mm width. This is my upper limit really as my wrists are only 6.5 inch. It runs very well and looks the dogs on the wrist.
      Less than £20 quid delivered. The firm also do a very handsome looking Mondaine station clock (WATCH) at the same price, and a couple of gorgeous Braun copies, quartz versions at less than £12 delivered. The Braun copies are 36 or 38mm across.

    So I got my own 'Nomos' replica, identical, to this Guanqin, but labeled 'Cadisen' (C1030).
    It does not have the German spelling error at '3', power scale goes up to 42hr (seems accurate), it costs a little less than the Guanqin ($37).
    Out of the box it would run 45s/day fast, so I fixed it myself, using Android's Tickoprint software for a speedy calibration, I noticed that the accuracy varies significantly with the power reserve:
    I can get +3s/day out of my watch now, if keeping the spring load above 30hrs. The less power is left the FASTER these movements run. Apparently they are not very well compensated for the spring load variation. Causing the amplitude to drop, which in return increases the frequency of the balance wheel.
    At 8hr reserve the watch will run more than 1sec/hr fast..
    We get what we pay for.
    I saw another interesting China watch with power reserve indicator and a quasi real (12hr) tourbillon:
    Nesun 9081. At $100 it seems to be the lowest priced tourbillon design on the market these days
    You want to test THAT one? I trust your expertise and would like to hear what you think about this weird movement with a 'regulator' style face!

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  Před 5 lety

      Thank for sharing your experience... I think the relatively poor isochronism is par for the course with these watches, with variation in accuracy depending on power reserve, position, temperature, etc... so to get yours running that well is pretty good.
      That pseudo-tourbillon looks very interesting... I wonder how much it is actually a tourbillon, and whether it's in fact something else entirely. I will try to get my hands on one, but will depend on what my collaborators may have in stock.
      Cheers, Ivan.

    • @viciokas1993
      @viciokas1993 Před 5 lety

      This is absolutely the difference between the homage / knockoffs from China and the real thing. They are usually not very well compensated for the power reserve they have. This watch specifically has less than half the power reserve of the Lambda (but it does have the automatic and date complications), so it should be somewhat accurate and doesn't need to be manually wound at all if the rotor is balanced well (which is an if all by itself).
      The Lambda is also made out of precious metals (either rose or white gold case), and has hand-engraved balance bridge, both of which ad hugely to the cost. Not to mention that the 84 hour power reserve is an astounding mechanical achievement for a hand-built watch, as the spring compensation becomes really difficult for an accurate watch with such a big power reserve. System 51 by Swatch has an automatic mechanism with 72 hour power reserve, but those are all machine-assembled and made in plastic or steel at best, which brings the cost down significantly.

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  Před 5 lety

      Thanks for the detailed comment Vahala! Check out the ETA C07.111 (uses an 2824 base) and other similar movements used within various Swatch group brands - it's got a surprising 80 hours power reserve (although of course not hand built).

      @@viciokas1993 The common misconception is that Chinese make cheap stuff that are inferior. But I would like to respectfully correct it by saying: Chinese make cheap stuff based on the demand of frugal westerners. Chinese can also make extremely complicated, sophisticated and well polished objects with craftsmanship unsurpassed by any for thousands years. You will have to pay millions for those and they are not really sold to westerners.

It seems like nylon but could be some other water resistant material. btw, i also have the Cadison version of this homage with black dial and the guanqin wears a bit larger (less ideal with my 6.25" wrist) due in part to its wider lug width and slightly different case design (though still 42mm). Having watched your extremely fair review of this watch I decided to buy one. Ali X at £42.50. Arrived within 7 days and this watch is quietly excellent. Movement is quieter than I was expecting and the accuracy is frankly brilliant at +2 secs/day. (I don't have all the techy machinery to judge this, just but it against my Citizen eco-drive quartz which seemed a fair comparison for accuracy). I have large wrists, 8 inches and it's so pleasing to find a Bauhaus themed watch like this, at 42mm width. The more usual 38mm is frankly too small. This is an excellent homage watch which is probably the equal to the Nomos in accuracy and durability. Power reserve is up there with the Swiss movements as is the accuracy. For the price you can't beat it in terms of looks and quality.
    P.S. a lot of fake NOMOS watches are turning up on Wish. They are not automatics like the real deal (using a Sunon quartz movement) and they can be easily spotted as they use a non-curved lens. However they do look the part and are hard to spot unless you watch the sweep of the second hands.

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks for sharing that... from my use of this watch (as well as what others have reported) the power reserve isn't always as advertised... often running considerably shorter than the stated 40 hours on the dial. Mine typically stops at the 15 hours mark (i.e. around 25 hours effective power reserve). Still, this is a watch I have hung onto all this time! :)

      @@PerthWAtch A lot of the Chinese auto movements have very variable power reserves. I keep mine in a winding box but if you have the watch on as a regular timepiece and even wear it to bed (as some blokes do) then it will just keep running.
      BTW, those NOMOS quartz fakes I mentioned are actually quite good if you want a basic quartz watch with a off-centre second sweep hand. The Sunon movement keeps good time BUT I don't know about the longevity. The actual watches themselves look just the part. All the dial labelling is present and correct.

    Guanqin has a lot of watches on sale that are almost identical. E.g. one that's even closer to the 'original' - without a Day indicator -, and another I've seen had the Second indicator at a slightly different place (offset to the right). The Review might not apply to those, those were actually only around 30$ so even cheaper (but no way of knowing if they compare).

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  Před 6 lety +1

      Yeah you're right about those other models. Some of what you have seen might in fact be a quartz version, which I have seen listings on, and that definitely doesn't compare. Otherwise the $30 models may not have sapphire. Power reserve on an automatic is not as common, so this one might be a more "premium" version...

      I've done the water drop test on two budget Chinese watches (sub $50) that claimed to have Sapphire Crystal, and both of them passed. It's not a foolproof test, as I understand false positives are possible, but it's encouraging to see that all three watches (including this Guanqin) passed the initial test.

    Would be a great homage if not for the particular ways in which they've dropped attention to detail. Typeface is not suitable and, worse, the kerning is way off. But mostly it seems the hands are far too thick. This shows they don't get the point of the design and is an insult to Bauhaus. How hard would it be to make it look more like what Nomos intended?

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  Před 5 lety +1

      Yep, I think you're pretty much on the ball with all those shortcomings. It's very much a superficial copy, and I don't think there is any great attempt to actually understand the underpinnings of Bauhaus design. Still, what is it they say? "Imitation is the highest form of flattery"? ;)

    For $70, this appears to be a good deal. You mentioned how the automatic is supposed to work to keep the watch wound, however you didn't mention how well this model does.Some brands, not very well known, from China, have problems with the rotor not spinning freely enough to wind the watch. Not being sure of the movement brand, can you tell me how well the rotor works on this model? If the rotor does a good job, and if it is accurate within 10 secs plus or minus, then I would for sure consider getting this watch. Great review, and if you can add some information as to the working of the rotor, that would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks for that Jim - well I guess I didn't mention the rotor function because it works as well as any Japanese or Swiss model I have - if I'm wearing the watch then it will unfailingly charge the reserve up to full within about a work day (8 hours or so), and it never drops down as along as it stays on my wrist. Accuracy wise it's tuned to about +5 seconds/day for me, although accuracy drops when the reserve is allowed to fall to around 15 hours or less. Cheers, Ivan.

      That would make some logical sense, but in my experience of Chinese watches so far (which has been quite extensive) and broader experience of Chinese culture, that is something they just would not tend to do... many reasons behind that but wanting to reach a more global audience would be part of it.

    The manufacturer of this watch made a big mistake by having the second subdial same level as the main dial. This has resulted in the second hand comming tip to tip with hour hand. whenever time hits06:33 and 35 seconds.the watch will freeze.
    Will only resume if you change time to 06:40
    I think a manufacturer modifuication is needed where a depressed second hand sub dial will make comfortable room for the rotation of second hand without contact with hour hand .

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  Před 6 lety

      Thanks for making a detailed comment on that problem! That is very curious to hear - I take it you experienced this problem yourself in this model? I have just checked mine, including putting it to 6:33 and waiting for the seconds to past 35 secs, and don't have any such problem. I can see a gap between the second and hour hands when they pass each other, so perhaps it's an isolated manufacturing fault? Sure doesn't seem like a universal problem as some owners have shared their experiences here. Regards, Ivan.

To mirror a point in another comment I made to this video, the names Seiko, Samsung, Nissan, etc. used to sound unfortunately foreign too. But time showed that unfortunate sound to be in the ear of the beholder, not in anything unfortunate about the companies or their names. Guanqin. If you say it a few times, and find yourself favorably impressed by one of their watches (as Ivan seems to have been with this one), I reckon it won't sound half bad! Too much "cloned" on Nomos ... except if you want a replica ... It could be a nice watch !

      Thank you for your feedback! Please understand that it's not really my choice to talk about the sponsor - it is a requirement. No mention, no more watches - I prefer to maintain the collaboration thank you.
      I believe I have mentioned *everything* relevant about the movement apart from regulated accuracy - what else do you want to know? I used to talk about accuracy but I think that's actually not very helpful because you can easily regulate to very good performance and the factories often don't.
      Yes yes available for less elsewhere unless you factor the discount code I provided, which makes it the same ;)

    I generally is still disappointed with CHINA made watches despite i was trying my best to give them benefit of the doubt. i test purchased tevise t801 as per another aussie Watch guy recommended on his chanel (that gentlement with the scots or irish accent) . but to my disappointment. the movement isn't as accurate as many reviews raved about. also you ought to have include in your review a verification on whether the power reserve as true to the scale or dial implied or the Power reserve is NOT fully representative or true. e.g. scale mention 35 but could only be 28 . OR if it exceeded the 35 hours etc . and how efficient is the automatic movement without winding

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  Před 6 lety +1

      Thanks for that - good point about commenting on the reserve scale. Well I can say it's accurate, and power reserve is actually around 35h but it has tendency to stop at lower power, around 10h or so, but will start again on giving it a slight move or wind. I only was able to find out more with longer use after I have filmed this. So it's far from perfect but that's no surprise. As for the Tongji movement of the Tevise, well I think accuracy out of the box will be very variable, but that's the same for Seiko even... it is however also relatively easy to regulate to accuracy if you are inclined to do so.

    I was going to buy this watch. I'm glad I didn't. Bit of an immature timepiece really. That spelling mistake is just the nail in the coffin. It's not sapphire btw. Far too thick even for a dumb knock off. If I got that watch it would decorate the corner of my watch case.

      @@PerthWAtch That's just me. I don't judge anyone for wearing this, but in my eyes this is just a blantant copy. I respect "homage" watches. For example homages of submariners, which are not produced anymore. But this looks like a chinese brand just copied a popular design. Maybe i prejudge, but i would not wonder, if the manufacturer do not even know what bauhaus design is. I don't want to bash chinese watchmakers in general - i really like the Seagull 1963 for example. But i would rather buy a cheap Seiko, Citizen or Orient, than this one.

      It's a fair question... let me share a little insight: I don't have a budget for the channel, it's done purely out of interest and passion for the subject. Therefore the watches are either mine (limited number!) or borrowed from supporters, or come from collaborations like these. If it's really terrible I will say no, but GearBest gave me a choice and I did my best to choose pieces that are interesting. I hope it's informative!

      Ivan, I would actually humbly ENCOURAGE you to continue reviewing Chinese watches, and, beyond that, to start reviewing more of them. Why? Because there is a market inefficiency for (or more bluntly, a dearth of) quality reviews of quality Chinese watches. Watches on a similar tier to this Guanqin "Nomos Lambda" represent tremendous opportunity; they are still quite unknown, and from what I've gathered, they often offer outsize bang-for-buck value. While the rock-bottom Tevise T801As are fun and worthwhile too (I'd enjoy seeing more of those as well), these higher quality Chinese watches seem to sit at the sweet spot. Surely you noticed how Jody's (JustOneMoreWatch's) Cadisen & Guanqin reviews struck a nerve? Your unbiased and thorough approach, your familiarity with the Chinese language, perhaps even your relative geographic proximity to China, these are all assets that serve particularly well for reviews of Chinese watches. Quality CZcams reviews of better known watch brands (Japanese, Swiss, German, etc.) seem to be fairly common. Not so for the Guanqins of the world. Finally, on your end, these watches are much easier on the budget, even if you were to buy them directly (plenty of intriguing options well below the $100 price point of this Guanqin, especially if you also start diving into AliExpress). Bottom line: the more reviews of Guanqin Nomos Lambdas and their like, the better! Of course, that's just my two cents, and humble ones at that. Love what you're doing with the channel, Ivan. Thumbs up, and keep on rolling with the quality content!

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  Před 6 lety +3

      Thank you very much Henry for taking the time to share those valuable thoughts - it's very much appreciated! Well I certainly have no intention to stop featuring Chinese pieces... even if they are no good it is worth showing so that the info is out there. One of my starting mantras was no brand exclusions. GearBest seem keen to continue the collaboration and hopefully they will increase my budget so that I can reach the $150-200 range where we might start seeing consistent quality. You make very good points about some specific assets I have, particularly being ethnic Chinese myself. Cheers, Ivan.
