I was wondering if you wouldn’t know how to make cookie ornaments that one decay away my dad used to buy them for us but he’s been gone since 2004 and I would like to make some because I don’t know where to find them
Can you do salt dough cookie ornaments with your dog paw print
Hi Sarah. I’m not sure what kind of ornaments you’re looking for. These salt dough ornaments can be made to look like cookies. Also, I have a video on using air dry clay to make ornaments.
Yes, you could definitely do that!😊
Here’s an air dry clay ornament video that might be what you’re looking for: Air Dry Clay Ornaments | DIY Christmas Ornaments

Many years ago my home demonstration taught a group to make this. I made a fruit tree. I didn’t have a mold or cookie cutter. She said talk to the dough as you mold with hands. We melted crayons in soup cans and dipped the fruit in the melted crayons. For my peach i used 2 colors and carefully dipped to make a pink peachy color after i made the peach shape.
How fun! I like to use it like clay to mold different shapes too. Isn’t it nice how you carry these memories with you for years to come? My boys and I are going to make more in the coming weeks. Thanks for sharing your story, Rose! -Crissy
THANK YOU FOR A FUN VID. I LOVE SALT AND FLOUR ORNAMENTS. LIKE YOUR CUTE DESIGNS.

What a fun idea! That sounds really familiar. I wonder if I did that as a kid in school too. I’m definitely going to try it with my boys sometime. Thanks for the idea!
This reminds me of tupperware party days!
😂
You explained everything so nicely, thank you very much. Happy Christmas to you and your family
Thanks for the sweet comment, Rose! I hope you have a wonderful Christmas with your family too. 🌲❤️
Great video. I can imagine how much work it is to make a video of this quality. You’ve done such a great job in making this clear, succinct and fun. Also - these ornaments will last FOREVER. My mom is 65 and her mom (86) still has salt dough ornaments my mom made nearly 60 years ago.
Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Oh, I’m so sorry to hear about your sweet Rottweiler. I’m glad you can create a keepsake to have a little memory of him. I just made a handprint ornament with this recipe, and I decided to paint the imprint to help it stand out more. I hope yours turns out well. ❤️

My daughter has made a snow man out of the dough.. She enjoyed it very much
I’m so glad to hear that! My kids love making these ornaments too. We are planning to make some again.
hi..i am not sure if you will se emy question...can we paint the cookies with gel food color and vodka or plain food color?or it must be acrylic?also i want to dye the dough before cooking so what glue to use for glitter afterwards?thanks
Yes, you can use food coloring in the dough before baking. I wouldn’t try to paint them after baking with food coloring since it’s too concentrated. Just use any glue or Mod Podge to add glitter afterwards. Have fun!
Thank you for such a great video!! Will be doing these this weekend!
You’re very welcome, Emilie! I hope you enjoy making them! Feel free to share any questions here.
Thank you for sharing, ,,I'm having a blast!

That’s great to hear, Laura! Have fun making them. I even did some Easter ones on my blog with a small batch recipe. Enjoy it!
So cute!!
Thanks, Frances! I hope you have fun making some!
If you wanted to color the dough before baking the shapes ( brown for a gingerman, or green for trees) , what would everyone recommend to put into the dough to color it?
You can use food coloring for this. Try adding it to the water before adding it to the dough. You can also add more to the dough later if needed. Also, here’s another version with cinnamon if you want a slightly brown color and fragrance: www.firstdayofhome.com/cinnamon-salt-dough-recipe/
@@FirstDayofHome Thank you very much 🌲❤️
Any time!
Beautiful 😍🎄💕🎄💕🎄💕
Thank you so much! 💕
I love this! But I do notice they’re a little thick, have yo tried making them a little thinner?
Thanks, Crissie! Yes, you could definitely make them thinner. I did some stars for a Christmas card holder and made them daintier. The drying time will be a little shorter if they are thinner too.
Amazing👌👌
Thank you!
Awesome!
Thanks, Diana!💕
Can you make the dough and refrigerate it and just add water as needed after it’s chilled? I work in the NICU and we are doing salt dough ornaments with hand/foot prints for Christmas but each baby has to have their own dough because of covid.
Oh, that touches my heart. My twins were in the NICU right after Christmas, so I want to thank you for what you do. Yes, you can store the dough in plastic wrap in the refrigerator for 1-2 days. Oh how I’d love to see those tiny prints!🥰 Praying for those babies!
Thank you! Can you please tell me what to do if my dough is too sticky, l use bake paper and l cant take iz off because its too sticky, and if l left them on baking paper it had wavy texture and after baking and standing at the air for days its still like "raw" inside. Its not hard enough from inside, l can feel that.
Can you please tell me what to do to make a lot of already made dough usable. Thanks.
Hi Ivana. If the dough is too sticky, try adding more flour. In different locations, sometimes humidity (or lack of humidity) can make the dough stickier or drier. Usually adding more flour helps with stickiness.
Great video!
Thanks, Denise!❤️
What a cute idea. :-)
Thank you, Sarah! 😊
Hi, I’m just wondering if you can decorate these using Royal icing since the icing will harden. Ty
If you don’t plan to keep these for a long time, you could use royal icing. However, I would not use a sugar based ingredient and store these afterwards. Puff paint might be a good alternative and could look like icing.
Does baking them make them come out better in anyway or is there no difference between that and air drying?
There shouldn’t be a difference, but I always opt to bake them just to speed up the process. I suppose there’s a risk they might brown a little if you bake them too long or too high a temp.
Has anyone tried using tempera paint and/or used something to seal the paint on? TIA
You should be fine using tempera paint. I like to use Mod Podge to seal the ornaments. You can use a matte, gloss, or sparkle formula depending on the look you want.
Hello may I ask where did you purchased the cutters please?
Hi Miriam! These are similar to the ones I purchased: amzn.to/3CHe1Ms. You can sometimes find them at Dollar Tree as well.
Hi I love how they came and can’t wait to make some of these ornaments. Thank you so much… I have a question, have you made any jewelry out of this salt dough? Thank you.❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much! I haven’t made jewelry with salt dough. I think you’d like polymer clay better for jewelry or possibly air dry clay. Polymer clay often comes in unique colors that you can blend or sculpt together.
@@FirstDayofHome happy Monday morning and thank you for let me know… I’ll looks into this air clay. Have a blessed day🧡
You’re welcome! Have a blessed day too.
My 6 yo watched this tutorial with me and she wanted to make ornaments immediately! What markers did you use?
Ha ha! That makes me smile. I think I used edible markers that I had on hand, but I love these acrylic markers for all types of paint projects: amzn.to/3srkoRN. They make it easy to paint faces and other small features. Have fun!
I made two cups but it was TOO MUCH I didnt now what to with it but it lasts long so its amazing
Maybe you can share with friends. On my blog, I also have a small batch recipe for next time. www.firstdayofhome.com/salt-dough-recipe/
I made these today but I needed 1 cup more of Water. Do you know why?
Hi Jenny. There could be a number of reasons from the type of flour you used and the type of salt to the humidity (or lack of humidity) in the air. I recommend all purpose flour and regular table salt.
can you add food couloring to the mix please
Hi Kelvin. Yes, you can definitely add food coloring. I’d go light with just a couple of drops and mix it in before rolling out the dough. Good luck!
Hello, is salt dough okay to keep for a long time? Or it turns bad after a while?
Salt dough ornaments will last for many years once they dry. The dough itself (before drying) will last for a couple of days wrapped in plastic in the fridge.
@@FirstDayofHome Thanks :)
This looks so fun!! I wanted to know how long did you leave it in the oven?
Hi Alejandro! It is fun! You’ll want to bake it 1.5 to 2 hours. You can also air dry them 4-7 days.
@@FirstDayofHome Thank you so much❤️
Are the ornaments supposed to get hard so you can decorate them? Mine stay soft and fall apart when I tried to paint them.
Yes, they should harden either in the oven or by air over several days. You may need to add less water, or try adding a bit more flour if the dough if very sticky.
How long do you bake them?
You can bake these ornaments in the oven for 1.5 to 2 hours at 250˚F or let them air dry for a no-bake option. Air drying usually takes 4-7 days depending on the thickness of your ornament. See the description of this video for all the info. Thanks!😊
Can salt dough be scented? And how long do they last?
Yes, you can definitely add cinnamon or scented essential oils to the dough if you like. They last for years and years! Maybe 10-20? The salt acts as a preservative.
Mom did these when I was a kid I'm 47 now and I still have the ones she did
That’s great to hear! I’m sure those are special memories for you.
Has anyone added essential oils to the dough to make them scented? Did it work?
That’s a great question. I haven’t tried it personally yet, but I do plan to do that with some Christmas scents. You can try adding a few drops to the mixture as you’re blending it, or you can just add a few drops after drying the ornaments. Friends have done it both ways with plaster, so I think it would work well with salt dough too. Have fun!
Can kids’ washable paint work on these?
Yes, they should work just fine! I tend to use acrylic paints because that’s what I have on hand. There’s a chance washable paint might fade or change color when exposed to light over time, but I’m sure the kids will have a blast and enjoy their creations. 😊
Yay! Thank you!
You’re welcome! If you share any photos on social media, I’d love to see how they turn out!😊 I’m @firstdayofhome
I was wondering if you were to use the same recipe to make Cinnamon Salt Dough how much would we have to add of cinnamon to your recipe. Thank you and have a nice day.
I would add 1-2 tablespoons of cinnamon to this recipe in that case. You can decide how much color feels right for you. Everything else should be about the same. Best of luck!
@@FirstDayofHome Thank you for your help I'll try your suggestion
You’re welcome, Cari! Let us know how it turns out.
Cute : )
Thank you! We had fun making them! 😊
Can they be baked in microwave for quicker cooking time ???
I have to admit I’ve never tried that. I’m not sure they would come out the same. You generally want to dry out the ornaments, not bake or cook them. That’s why you need the oven pretty low for a longer period. I hope that helps!
@@FirstDayofHome ohhh that makes perfect sence thank u 🥰
You’re welcome!
@@FirstDayofHome oh i have another question 🤣 does salt dough ever go mouldy ?? If so ..... what do i use to prevent that ??
Hi! Bring all the questions! I don’t mind! 😁 These ornaments usually don’t get moldy because the salt acts as a preservative. They can even last several years!
How long you keep it In the oven for????
1.5-2 hours at 250F. It’s in the video description if you need the full instructions.
I wanted to ask one qs...actually we don't have an oven...can i use baati cooker for it? And for how much time I'll have to bake it? Pls tell as baati cooker is used for same purpose in Delhi, India
I’m not familiar with a baati cooker, but with an oven you would bake them at a very low heat (250 Fahrenheit) for about 2 hours. It depends on how thick the ornaments are. You always have the option of letting the ornaments air dry, which can take 4-5 days usually.
@@FirstDayofHome okay....thank you so much ma'am 😊♥️
You’re welcome! Best of luck!
@@FirstDayofHome thankkk youu maam, my celebrations just went awesome everyone praised my efforts and actually credit goes to you...thanks again❤
I’m so happy to hear it went well. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience with me. It truly brightens my day! ❤️Happy Holidays! -Crissy
Can i bske higher at lesser time?
Unfortunately they won’t come out the same if you bake them higher. You’re really trying to dry them out, not bake them. You can also leave them to air dry for several days.
I did the modge podge and it just lifted my paint off my ornament
How long did you let the paint dry, and what type of paint did you use? That can happen sometimes with chalk paint or paint that isn’t fully dried.
How much time we have to set the oven for?
Hello! 1.5-2 hours at 250F. Good luck! More details and a printable recipe are here: www.firstdayofhome.com/salt-dough-ornaments/
Can I do my baby’s footprint instead of cookie cutters?
Yes, that’s definitely something people like doing with salt dough. Turns out super cute. Congrats on your baby!😊
Can you put a picture on it
Yes! After drying, you can apply one layer of Mod Podge, let it dry, then print out a picture the size you want. Apply another layer of Mod Podge on the ornament once the first layer dries and place your printed picture on top. Make sure you have punched a hole in the picture as well to line up with the ornament. Then apply one more thin layer of Mod Podge over the picture. If you want to use an actual photo, I’d just glue it on with hot glue or foam tape but not use Mod Podge.
@@FirstDayofHome thank you
@truthhurts5158 You’re welcome! Have fun!
Can we air dry them ?
Yes, you definitely can! They may take 4-6 days to completely dry depending on how thick they are.
@@FirstDayofHome Its raining at my place and its humid , so it will not get mouldy , right ?
I don’t think they will, but they may take longer to dry.
@@FirstDayofHome thank you ! I'll ping you if i need any help
You’re welcome!
Hi. Can I eat the cookies too ???
Hi Emmy! No, these are not meant to eat, just to look cute. 😉
@@FirstDayofHome thank you
You’re very welcome. I hope you enjoy making some.
You can also make them look like sugar cookies with sugar crystals!!
