    A nice day in the summer is the round robin. It depends on tide time on which way you travel round or where you start. If you start at Totnes, the route is open top bus to Paignton, Steam train to Kingswear, ferry to Dartmouth and boat trip up the Dart to Totnes. You can go the opposite direction but because of tides it may dictate which way round you travel. During summer, the trains stop at Churston because that is the crossing point of trains. If there is only one train running then there is no need to stop there. Pleased you enjoyed the journey.

    I love the livery on Hercules (4200 class) and Goliath (5205 class). Wish Hornby had done both in their GWR lined green with nameplates, but unfortunately no.
    It is interesting how maybe half of this railway's coaching stock is actually ex-DMU stock (class 116 and 117 centre coaches).
    I did this railway when I was little, travelling all the way from the north east to Devon and Cornwall for may half term. I more recently saw it in 2014 on tour with the National Methodist Youth Brass Band, but didn't get to ride on it. (I also went on that waterpark too...)
    I do wonder why the locos shunt into the siding by the signal box before running round. The canadian pacific loco you mentioned is actually a USATC S160 class loco designed for european use during WWII and built to fit within the UK loading gauge, this specific one being built by Baldwin for the Polish Railways. Another is preserved at the K&WVR, nicknamed Big Jim.

    • @StaxRail
      @StaxRail Před 2 lety

      The livery Goliath carries was never actually carried by the class hence why Hornby didn't do it. The locos shunt into the headshunt at Kingswear to pick up the fireman who operates the groundframe- helps to speed up the run round!

    • @lapiswake6583
      @lapiswake6583 Před 2 lety

      @@StaxRail except Hornby has done Flying Scotsman in both wartime black and apple green with smoke deflectors, a preservation only livery. Same goes for the 9F Cock O The North, and of course Bachmann with the 4MT tank 80135 in green. Plus Tornado, which only exists in preservation. There's no reason Hornby couldn't do both Hercules and Goliath as preserved.

    My ears pricked up when you mentioned Kingswear? 'I wonder Sam is going to show us Kingswear Castle?' Well blow me down, you did just that. I knew a chappie who volunteered on her when she was in the Medway, so I knew she was a real steamship and was propelled by the paddles. There was a fierce rivalry between Kingswear Castle volunteers and the P.S. Waverly volunteers as I recall.

    Bluebell next Sam?. If you had been there last week you could have seen Hornby,s Clan Line. I did check for you and yes it’s got a metal running plate and chassis, not plastic. The cab looks pretty convincing with separately fitted parts and metal whistles. Didn’t have nem couplings though. The finish was really good. As good as Bachman, and real metal hand rails with sprung buffers. Seriously Sam really enjoyed the outside broadcast. Brilliant. All the best Mick.

  • @kellyashfordtrains2642

    Yay! I can comment again. I'll bet you enjoyed yourself. Nothing beats riding behind a real steam engine. I wish you hadn't done the timelapse on the way back, because I caught a split second glimpse of what looked like Lydham Manor in one of the sidings. I wanted a better look at her, perhaps with you zooming in on her. I'll let you off this one time.🙃😉 Plus, the kneeling down shot of Goliath was very nice. You caught her at a nice new angle. There's nothing truly terrifying about it. Most photographers get that sort of angle for main line video shoots.

    I went to Durand, Michigan last weekend and went to Durand Union station, I watched trains run on their layout, and I caught a freight train, I had a fun time, also you should 3D print some American steam and diesel locomotives

    Just want to let you know the Canadian Pacific loco you mention is a USATC S160, but the livery it carries at the moment is very similar to the CPRR. Not actually owned by the railway either, its owned by Peter Best, and if I remember correctly all his locos are painted in the same shade of red

    Great westerns are so gorgeous! Can I ask, as I’m not sure, what brand would you recommend for lubricant for model trains? Just bought a 8 year old EWS class 37 but I think a service would be useful.

    Hello, I have a question for you:
    First of all, what was the other train that was running
    and also teh time i went to dartmouth, it was omaha and 5526 running.
    The guard on 5526 made sure the train left 4mins early just so we couldnt get on.

  • @yourfriendlyneighbourhoodb2688

    It was a great video of a lovely line, Sam, although I’m inclined to ask whether or not Goliath features a metal running board. Plastic would never suit such a beautiful machine, the GWR is my favourite model producer, they’d better be packing them with features

    • @SamsTrains
