Red XIII Voice: Cool and wise individual, who has seen much of the world.
Nanaki Voice: "For real!?!"
Lmao I literally can only hear Ryuji
It's just Meruem vs Ryuji
So the same. Absolutely perfect!
Red XIII voice: teenager trying to sound more mature
FOR REAL??
Found it so sweet that after Barret finds out what happened to his father he refuses to call him Red anymore and always calls him Nanaki
Yh I noticed that during one of the final ends game bosses he shouts out nanaki which is badass
It's not just Barret, even for side missions they recorded extra lines for Cloud too where he calls him Nanaki if you play them after Cosmo. They really went the extra mile there.
The fact that we get to see the moment he first got the name “Red XIII” vs his origins and arc in Cosmo Canyon makes you root for everyone calling him Nanaki.
Yeah I love that, I really wish the game, like the ui in the menu and subtitles and stuff would switch over too
Barret got the best treatment in the remake, so much emotion expressed in his actions and just the animation they did with him that wasn’t possible in the original and it’s made me appreciate his so so so much more
I love the way barret mocks him the first time he whips out the voice change
😆 and when Barrett mocks Yuffie thank you very much after they save her
Barret: Your Welcome! 👋🏻🤠
@@nik0_plays he also does it to Cait lol

When I learned he was voiced by Max Mittelman, I couldn’t believe it, I expected him to sound like Ryuji, but then I heard the first voice and was like “ok, my man max has talent” cuz I’ve heard Kaiji Tang as Iwai and Dazai and they sound different, but then I learned the gruff voice was an act and heard his real voice and was like “yeah that makes sense, at 48 he’s still a teen….”
'batman' meruem to 'sora' one-punch man
Mad respect to Max Mittelman as I was caught off guard by the first time he spoke with the voice of a wise old man until he flipped and sounded like himself. I didn’t know he did both voices until I saw the credits.
I thought it was two different persons. Both voices are so good, should get an VA award for that.
Threw me off too at first. Totally forgot because I never heard the voice change in the OG... Since I had to read it☺️
Yeah when the scene at under Juno’s happened I instantly laughed and knew it was Nanakis real voice. When Remake happened I was wondering why he sounded so aged and wise when In actuality he was in his teens.
@@TheDienhart Turns out he was just trying to sound cool.
The localised version of FF7 is notoriously inaccurate. The voice/personality change is very obvious in the JP version but pretty much completely removed from the EN version.
Same. I love both.
@@jk844100 thats because tone in english is almost entirely in vocal inflection and usage of slang on contractions. japanese is a more free form if need be, considering the personal pronoun of "I" has only one variable in english, japanese has i believe near 7+ , denoted different degrees of masculine, femenin, neutral/formal, and variations on crassness even.
Thanks for this comparison. Honestly, looking at the wording of his Red XIII lines, it really does come off as "teenager trying to sound older and more mature" which honestly works a lot knowing that he's actually functionally a teenager still lol.
Like compare "Like a man who's killed his fair share of fiends, I suppose." to "Like... a guy who's seen his fair share of battles, I guess." The first sounds more serious, and using suppose instead of guess just sounds more worldly from the perspective of someone younger. Or talking up his tracking as skilled but having a terrible weakness compared to just saying "sorry I smelled food and got distracted"
Really solid writing there, and especially big props for everyone else's lines not changing but still working just as perfectly regardless of if it's Red XIII lines or Nanaki lines.
I'm surprised more people haven't used the word "pup" in contextualizing Nanaki. His date scene lays it out perfectly. Dude's full grown but still a pup
Possibly still has some growing to do. If anything like humans, at 16, another inch or two until bones completely ossify around 18-21.
@@AkaiAzul The devs got you overthinking everything. Pull back a bit it's not that technical.
Have you ever had a puppy? They spend about 9 months growing to mostly full size, but retain the personality of a pup for several years.
I’m so glad I got Red as the date. The whole scene was endearingly men’s best friend. What made it even more bone chilling but awesome was when Red made Cloud “promise” …
@@AkaiAzul Dogs, even when at full size, can still be puppies.
For me, Red 13/Nanaki has always been a cat! He looks more like a lion! Lions are cats! Why do they always call him a dog?
His Nanaki voice really grows on you, makes me want to protect him.
I know right? I got him for the Gold Saucer thing and he was just so energetic and excited to ride the Ferris wheel. Made me think to myself “Protect him at any cost” He puts on an act so well but in reality he’s just only a 16 year old in a cat-dog body.

When I first heard his real voice I had to do a double take like " WHO ARE YOU!?"
In the original game his personality changes if you notice the change through his dialog. This is honestly the best way to translate Red's character from text box to being fully voiced.
Its horrible and extremely cringe.
It’s literally the way it is in the OG we just couldn’t tell obviously since it was through text. He’s literally a kid.

No matter who Max Mittleman voices I always end up liking it. Which is crazy cause I didn’t even notice he was doing Nanaki until I read the comments
Wow, it's really Ryuji's voice. Straight bonkin.
Can't blame him for getting distracted by food.
Who doesn't enjoy them some good food?
Being distracted by food feels even more funny when you remember he's a kid and with a powerful nose like that the hunger has got to hit harder- rip lol
Also have you seen him? His hips and ribs are showing. Give that boy a sandwich. xD
Would've loved to be able to have Nanaki's voice in NG+ entirely.
He'd have so much fun on the Ride to Costa del Sol.
I mean he pretty much did still have fun dressing up as a soldier doing that Michael Jackson spin and playing Queen’s Blood. Even though he was still putting on his fake persona.😂
I used Google Translate, OP is saying Anakin started referring to himself with the pronoun "oira," which is a completely different way of talking, that they were looking forward to hearing his voice as all Japanese people knew this. That Japanese voice actors are also amazing.
I did a bit of further research. When a person refers to themselves with "oira" in Japanese, it gives them an air of being a "country bumpkin," or some one with a rural background.
The equivalent to this might be give him a Southern US accent, which I'm grateful they went with the teenager approach than Southern accent in English. The reason I'm thankful for this (in case OP Google Translate this back) is that in the US a rural accent / Southern accent / country bumpkin accent denotes being uneducated and "uncool," when the aura he presents us closer to being inexperienced than uneducated.
Red 13 sounds cool and almost like Puss in Boots. While Nanaki sounds like a little a high school teen like Ryuji from Persona 5. Max Mittelman is still a amazing voice actor
Ryuji? Little school kid? He's a high schooler. Lol
For real.
Once I realize Red XIII would forever change his voice after his episode, I guess there are probably 2 different VA for him in all the side-quest. And you prove me right!
Same guy doing the voice actually. He's really got the range.
It's Max Mittleman doing both voices. Credit to the guy, he's got some range.
As the two other replies have mentioned, its the same guy, Max Mittelman. Ive been following his work for years and when I first heard the Red XIII voice I didnt believe it was him because it just sounds so different from his other roles and natural speaking voice, but its him, and hes doing both voices, insane range he has
I love Nanaki's voice a lot more than his Red XIII voice. I think it's because I know Nanaki is a teenager, and it's how he naturally sounds. It's just so endearing.

@@john_7000 well, kindof, but not really. That is like saying Legolas is a teenager. He is obviously a grown, mature man. Even if he is at the early stage of his life.
In Nanaki case, his personality seems young for his age, ina charming way. He has probably seen more then an avarage 30, or 40y old human. Comparing Nanaki to humans, I think it is wrong to say he is a teenager.
And we don`t really have a reference to how his parents would sound. Maybe it is like the "dog part" of him playing out. Maybe all of them sound playfull, at any age.
Omg I'm going to bully him so hard 😩😫
I really like the voice change! I find it so funny and cute
Nanaki change his voice to act like a protector warrior like his father 😭😭😭
I noticed this also, I was surpised to know if you do side quests before beating chapter 10 you only get his Wise Gruff voice but after it's all his Kid voice.
Ah ok, that's when the change happens. That's cool.
Well… if there was ever a reason for me to do a NG+, this would be it
Lol right!
I love how well it is done, once you get past chapter ten they really dubbed all the missions with both voices, after finishing the chapter I went to do one of the first missions with Red and I was very surprised to hear his current voice with the story
Ironically the people that hates on his "actual" voice is the reason why Red did the other voice in the first place. Red didn't want you to judge and reduce him to the fact that he is young. And just because he is using his voice now (which means he trusts you) then ppl mock him for it. Yall dont deserve Red.
that doesn't make sense. if he started out with a kid's voice I wouldn't complain because that's how I would know him. i just think it sucks his voice and his personality changed. the gold saucer scene was cute but I was hoping to have him drop some words of wisdom or have some deep conversation with cloud. supposedly the original mentioned his voice changed but I don't remember that and it had no impact. kids and teens in video games just isn't a thing for some people. like games with a anime girls, cringe. idk how people play that nonsense. they're so annoying.

Between the different voice, the Queen's Blood tournament, and Loveless VR, I'd go as far as to say Nanaki has great potential to be an actor.
I was worried that he'd go back to the Red voice after Cosmo Canyon, but I'm so glad they kept him as his true self and even had the party start calling him Nanaki.
Only thing that could have improved it is if they changed his name to Nanaki in the subtitles too
@@BobThePenguin. This was my thought too, it actually really annoys me that it doesn't. It'd be so satisfying as a character arc thing, hopefully in the third game
@@BobThePenguin.good thing I play the game without subtitles lol. But that said, their work was quite extensive, to the point it’s almost forgivable they left it unchanged (not to say they shouldn’t otherwise)
Can't help it. Every time I hear that type of voice, I immediately think of Prompto
Fun fact! The voice actor for Prompto and the voice actor for Nanaki are actually really good friends. They where in P5 together, actually streamed the game together too (with Noctis' voice actor as well)
OK be real w me, who else thought going in battle it sounded like Red was going to summon Captain Kidd after Cosmo Canyon?
Pretty interesting, just made it to Cosmo Canyon. Was like wait... what happened to the voice actor?
He's an actual teenager.
"Always has been."
When I first learned his name, my friends and I were playing Grounded. A game that's basically "honey I shrunk the kids." With ants and spiders, etc. One of the characters you can choose is voiced by him.
When I heard him as Red in part 1 I was like, "how is that the same guy?" Especially when the character kid goes, "this is worse than Mom's brussel sprouts!" And then when we hear "Nanaki" talk I was like, "oh, there he is!" Lol.
I was curious too if they used the same voice actor for Nanaki’s
The nanaki voice kinda reminds me of similar voices like ryuji, and junpei in a way. I like it.
Same voice actor as Ryuji!
Well, I can safely say the second voice reminds me a lot like the immaturity of Arataki itto-Genshin Impact and Fairy King Harlequin-seven deadly sins (both voiced by Max Mittelman)
I don't get why people are acting surprised. He had a very young voice in Advent Children. For his one line anyway.

This was the first thing that came to mind. I completed all side quests before entering Nanaki’s home, thinking: “Hey, what if I never did them and went back to them?” What do you know: I was right. They prepared variations for all situations.
Cool, didn't even think about this since I always do quests as soon as they become avaible, except two in chapter 12 that I'm saving until after I finish the Gold saucer
I love both voices, they work for different reasons. I don't get why many bash his childish voice.

I love the amount of depth they've added to the characters. Red is a lot more fun in this game.
Until I see video of the guy actually making that deeper voice I'm 100% sure that they had 2 different actors be each voice.

So adorable! Awwwww!
and hence another reason the Og ff7 should have had voice acting in it! i had no idea that nanaki canonically spoke with two different tone of voices and that his true voice isn't really how you would expect him to sound! i mean the first crash bandicoot came out a year before final fantasy Vll did an the former had voice over, why couldn't the latter?
also i always pronounced nanaki as nah-naw-kee and just now i am learning it's actually pronounced nah-nah-kee
Crash Bandicoot only had a handful of voiced lines, most of which were down sampled into the dirt to fit the game's sizable 3D level count on the same disc. MP2s (MP3's predecessor) were too CPU intensive to bother, WAV took up too much space, and ADX (the best solution at the time) was still Sega exclusive. Meaning Square would've been stuck with heavily down sampled WAVs, which with the game's massive line count, would've sent the game's disc count into the stratosphere. The original FF7 already came tightly packed on it's 3 CDs which already caused grumbling over disc swapping at the time, required a nearly dedicated memory card, and cost more than the average game at the time. Voiced dialog was simply impossible given the game's already enormous size, and forcing it would've resulted in a shockingly expensive game mired by endless disc swapping.
Alright so I had a weird glitch where I was doing the doctor quest and it was all Nanaki lines. I had still not been to Cosmo Canyon so I was VERY confused. Like why is there Ryuji coming out of my Red XIII?
Red XIII is Prince Leo, Nanaki is Ryuji in my brain.
What so there are actually 2 ver.?.... does that also include the relationship levels?... like if still arent close to him he will still have that old mans voice?...
His voice only changed if you visited the Cosmo Canyon first time which reveal Red / Nanaki real voice. You can do side quest depending you have visited Cosmo Canyon first or not.
He first spoke in his teenager's voice to Aerith in her room, Cloud was listening outside the door and thought she had a guy in there.

It's funny but in french version his "fake" voice sound a little off when he talked so when his true voice arrive I was like : I that why he sounded like that !
The VA doesn't have that maybe that why some people find it weird for this change of voice 🤔
It's crazy how they made his voice different depending on when you do the sidequests, before or after Cosmo Canyon. They didn't have to do that, that's amazing. Did they do this for all sidequests? I know this is not the only one, he has 2 different voices for the chicken quest in gongaga too. I wonder if they did that even for grasslands. And it's not only the voice but the dialogue too, he says pretty much the same thing but rephrased. As Nanaki he words it more casually, as Red he words it more like how an old wise man would.
Also his second voice sounds like Ben from Ben 10 series alienforce and on through omniverse
No, that’s Johnny.

I didnt mind the idea of a voice change. But not for change in personality, he could still sound like a kid but still sound responsible, maybe like Simba from lion king. Red's teen voice made him sound glaringly cocky and immature as opposed to his fake persona, i.e., what he wanted to be perceived as. which typically should still be the real you even to a degree
This is how his character was in the original game. His personality changes when you reach Cosmo Canyon as well like in Rebirth
This is how it was in the og. We see his real personality shine through sometimes when he did his fake act
@ricardocontreras5060 I had Vincent and Red XIII on my party at all times in the OG, and it may just be because of voice acting in rebirth but the change in personality didnt feel that glaring. Like even Red Rebirth's battle quotes he's all like "coming atcha!" "did I do good or did I do good?!" So full of vigor and energy as opposed to a subtle change in the OG, which honestly felt more like simple Character Development than a complete change in personality.
But id like to be proven wrong. And as Im aware, OG JP FF7 was like this but not so much NA FF7, Id appreciate it if id be linked to see some game footage for clarity, and just for curiosity's sake.
I feel like he should only have used his real voice at Cosmo Canyon and gone back to the fake voice once they left. Whilst he may be comfortable being his true self with the party he would still want to put up his fake persona for strangers like the random side quest quest givers.
@@xestalfer5774The reason it didn't feel as clear in the original is because the translation was bad. In the JP version it's a clear personality shift from Wise to youngster

Maybe those 2 years between VII and Advent Children are when Red XIII's voice breaks hahahaha
Except Red only said 7 words in that entire movie. "There are still children with the Stigma." At the very end.
Like, ya'll, in Japanese, he says "Oira".....anyone who uses that is a bouncing baby boy, pure, simple, good, deserves candy and a pop, he will protect even tho we want to protect him. Son Goku of Dragonball uses "Oira" as well.
How the heck i never thought about trying this on my second walkthrough? 😂😂😂
I hated his "true voice" at first because I was so used to his Red XIII voice but it honestly grew on me a lot over time.
Same. I especially like how energized he sounds in combat.
It actually makes a lot of sense, it's jarring but it makes sense.
Imagine being a teenage that has been kidnapped on an entirely different continent, escaping from that captivity with a bunch of strangers you've just met and to top that off you look like a fully grown adult. Even if you ignore the fact that you are a four legged animal of a rare species, you still would want to put on a facade of being older than what you really are at least until you felt you were in good company.
Not gonna lie, when I first heard his Nanaki voice I about broke my neck from the whiplash, then I remembered that in the original game he's suppose to be the equivalent of a human 16/17-year-old and it makes sense.
I far prefer his Red voice. I did all the SQ as I played through, so it is definitely the version I heard the most. If they'd kept the voice, but only changed the dialogue to Nanaki, it could actually be pretty amusing. Sort of like Batman goes grocery shopping funny.
He kind of ended up in the Cait Sith basket for me, after Cosmo Canyon. Props to Max Mittelman however. Very solid work!
I think his Nanaki voice sounds a lot like Hallelujah, moreso than Ryuji.

Can someone explain the different voices and personalities
Basically red xiii older voice was, him acting like an older man, but his other voice is his true voice. No split personality here but i remember in remake he was more ferocious until aerith touched him.
he was like this in the original too, but since it was only text, you could only tell through his different way of speaking
Idk why the Nanaki voice reminds me of Alfred in FE:Engage
Wonder if they're voiced by the same person?
Now that you mention it, I agree.
Alfred is Nick Wolfhard, Nanaki is Max Mittelman. But I agree, they do sound similar.
Wait, why does his voice change? I don't remember anything from FF7 I guess.
Nanaki is a 48 years old,but that both in the OG and here is said more clearly in the game is around 16 years old in human years, all the big old voice and pretending to be an adult was a pure act to be sure the others, which he wasn't close yet, would had not look down on him or treat him like child.
In the OG FF7 although this was made very clear in the original japanese text, which through their language and various use of words is made very clear the difference from a young to an adult, when the game got translated to english issues happened, the original idea was to give Nanaki a country speech to make him sound younger in the english text once reached Cosmo Canyon and learned the truth about how he really was,but do to time constraint and getting push for the release back then, this was not implemented in time and had to be cut,the result through a simple translation did not delivered and the change between Nanaki fake act and real self, got lost for a good part in the translation to english, leaving only subtle traces of it.
With the remake they got the chance to retcon this and clearify it,for people who played the Japanese text this came to no surprise,as is very very strong the difference between Nanaki pre and post Cosmo Canyon, but people that only played the english version and never read articles or trivia about the translation errors of the OG pretty much found out about this only now,so i think is not a fact you don't remember this, you just were not aware of the error done in the past.
How didi u get the voice change??
Play the game and you will find out for yourself
Nanaki is Ryuji’s fursona change my mind
While Max Mittelman's range is truly unreal and super impressive, I have to be honest and say that Red's voice change is the first and only thing I really dislike about FF7 Remake/Rebirth. I 100% understand the character arc, Red's age in proportion to his species' lifespan, and also recognize the change in the way Nanaki spoke in the original game after getting to Cosmo Canyon, but this just doesn't work. I know they hint at the voice change a few times leading up to it, but the voice is just WAY too different and it appears to affect his entire personality as a character. This is not to say that his young voice isn't well performed or anything, it's just way too overly boyish and doesn't match the aesthetics of his design at all. I feel if they had altered Nanaki's choice of dialogue and speech inflections instead of a complete change in voice timbre, it would have been a much more nuanced way to portray this character development without depriving us of his original voice (which in my opinion was absolutely perfect the way it was).
How does this work, anyway?
Voice acting.
God his Nanaki voice is egregious
Is this different based on your relationship with him or what?
