Rangers 2 - Celtic 1 - League Cup Final 2003

  • John Hartson missed a last minute penalty as Rangers won the League Cup. Lorenzo Amoruso challenged Bobo Balde at the edge of the box and when the Celtic defender fell over, Kenny Clark gave Hartson the chance to take the match into extra-time. Thankfully, Hartson put the ball wide and goals from Claudio Caniggia and Peter Lovenkrands were enough for the win. Henrik Larsson had made it 2-1 with 30 minutes remaining but Celtic, who had Neil Lennon sent off after two red card offences in two minutes, could not find another goal.

I can hardly believe this final is almost 20 years ago. That season was truly unbelievable. Its easy to forget that going into that final Rangers were chasing a treble and Celtic were chasing the quadruple, in the middle of March!
In fact, in the 7 days after this final, Celtic went on to beat Liverpool 2-0 at Anfield, then the following Sunday lost 1-0 to my team, Inverness in the Scottish Cup.
In the space of a week, Celtic had lost the chance to win a quadruple and then a treble, which I think was a massive psychological boost for Rangers for the run in.

Used to love the confrontations each game between Thompson and Ricksen, Moore and Amoruso against Larsson and Hartson/Sutton, Balde against Mols.
I can still vividly remember the pain I felt when Hartson put that penalty wide.
Then just a few days later it was all forgotten after a truly amazing display at Anfield and Hartson lashing in a stunning winner.
I think both sides of the Celtic/Rangers divide would love to see a return to the abilty of those teams really.

As a neutral here, i have to say both of these squads shown here in this great contest at the time where simply phenomenal, great players, pure passion and excellent football. That's not a good enough reason to send someone death threats though, and the fact that he is a Catholic plays a lot into it, but yeah there is a little more to it than most Celtic fans think, but only a little.

  • @Shaftsus

@yermaw145 lol but seriously 2 stonewall penalties!? The first was never a handball - his arms were tucked into him so there wasn't anything he could have done to avoid contact with the ball, would have been harsh to give. And the second was a clear dive just inside the penalty area - yes there was some contact but still ridiculous theatrics from Lovenkrands, I'd say we were lucky to get away with it but it is in no way a "Stonewall" penalty lol

@Shaftsus Navigated completely away from the point I was trying to make. It had nothing to do with religious values whatsoever, it was the harvestation of bigotry-pure and simple. And I'm betting that the Roman Catholic schooling system wasn't the friendliest system in the WHOLE of the 20th century, what with a sex scandal running as deep as the Atlantic Ocean. The only religious value taught in those catholic schools was learning to keep your mouth shut when fondled.
