    Hi, Randy. It's me again, ARES stands for Amateur Emergency Radio Service. We serve as a backup when all other communications fail. But now after listening to you I feel GMRS could be a better backup if we had the GMRS repeaters in place. Again, thanks for all of your effort in putting these videos together. Alan.

      I'm hoping to start something like that in my area. My plan for it is just about local communication when other means go out, so everyone can check on each other. I will reach out to the local Ham community to coordinate outside communication if I can get the idea off the ground.

    I setup a repeater much the same as yours Randy. I ended up using two different antenn's as well. From what I have been finding out is the XLT duplexers are for small portable radio's with less than 5 watts of output. In order to get the Wouxuns to work with it I had to turn down the x-mitter radio to low power. Once I removed the XLT from the system and installed the 2nd antenna , everything worked normally. I recommend using a set of Harvest BC200 antenna's as they are already pretuned for the GMRS frequencies. (They look the same as the Tram 1486). This info is of course based on my install of the Wouxun KG1000 radios. I also will add my antenn's are approx. 75' feet apart and the transmitting antenna is about 10ft below the receive one.

    Enjoyed binging your repeater build series this evening. My hunting club has me looking at our options for two way radio communication because cell phone reception isn't always reliable while we are in the woods. We only need to a cover 5 mile radius from the cabin at most for deer camp activities. This repeater set up will be a bit overkill for us, but if we decide we want maximum range this will probably be the direction we go.

    Randy-I appreciate you continuing to answer relevant questions even after a year has lapsed!
    I read through all the comments because I didn’t want to ask anything you’ve already answered (unlike the sad grounding nazi hams and other stupid people).
    I see that you’ve ditched your KG 1000G repeater set-up for a dedicated repeater that’s better suited for 24/7/365. But early on the feedback was as long as the units stay cool, they will work just fine with constant use.
    Another commenter suggested keeping everything on low power and using an amp to boost to the antenna.
    Just curious why you switched and if an amp would solve the problem?
    Lastly, would love to see how you’re testing the installed system and determining loss etc.
    BTW-just got the call sign yesterday (WRQY817)-$35 for 10yrs.

    This may be a dumb question, but if you're getting 30 mile range with this setup, do you know any details about the repeater you routinely hit at 70 miles range?? Is it purely a matter of altitude on the antenna 70 miles away? Do you expect the range to decrease when you get the duplexer you wanted? The power at the antenna will go down with the duplexer, right?

Is it a matter of chosing a freq not used or you can use the same freq you just have to assign a CTSS and Tone in order to make sure only people with those two items can get through. Being new to this is there such a thing as a repeater that's more like an extender where it receives on a specific ch such as 20 simplex freq and transmits on the same ch 20 simplex freq. What is the purpose of an antenna having to be no more than 20' above the ground?

    Question: When using the two radios as a repeater, are you still able to use one of them as a transmitting base station?

      Yes, but you have to change the settings to take it out of 'repeater mode' first.

      For more distance a better antenna or moving the antenna to a higher spot usually helps more than just power.

    Hi. Thank you for your video! I'd like to ask you two questions. I know nothing about portable radios, that is why I have two UV-5Rs. One of them always drains all the battery after a few minutes transmitting and the other lasts more than 10 times that. I use them only for family communication but I'd like to learn more. Could you please tell me where I could find a good ham radio online course? The second question is which portable ham radio would be reliable, be a good purchase for a beginner that would not waste money, and work for family and emergency communications? I'm writing from Brazil, where every dollar needs five times more work to get earned then in the US. PS: I'would also like to buy a good base station for my car.

    So I built the same setup using the same equipment. 2 KG1000G’s, XLT duplexer, Tram 1486-b antenna. I have the radios separated by about 16 feet that’s as long as the data cable is that connects the radios together. Still have desense issues. I also installed a low noise amp between the duplexer and the RX radio. What else can be done to stop the desense issue?

    Great videos on your repeater build. Thank you. I didn't catch whether or not you needed to register a separate license for the repeater, did you? If not, you auto-ID using your own GMRS call-sign?

    Q: Do any of the Midland GMRS micro mobiles have the capability of linking two together as a base repeater like you did with the Wouxan (wocean) 1000's? Any other GMRS OEM mobile offer this?

    New to the GMRS world, just received my GMRS license 2 days ago. Forgive my ignorance, if there is another repeater set up where the signal gets weak that is set with same frequency and CTCSS or DCS, will that further your communication range? Could it be linked together?

    Hey Randy, i fimally got my tram all tuned up and bottom of antenna is 20'. With mtns all around me in city of Tehachapi ca, i am hitting the crestline repeater 100 miles away and talking to rancho, hesperia, ontario and victorville. Yours should do be able to do the same distance further south- southwest.

    • @TheNotaRubicon
      @TheNotaRubicon  Před 3 lety +2

      That Crestline repeater is at about 6,500FT elevation.. I'm about 4,500FT below that so i will never get that kind of reach. Because of all the mountains within 20-35 miles to the south-southwest of me, I will always have a limited range.

      @@TheNotaRubiconi understand, darn mts. i am at 4,000 in a valley. I can talk on a Repeater 100 miles away but cant talk to my daughter 10 miles away because of a little hill. That doesn't make since. But every elevation below you your tram can see, should be reachable.

    Hi, quick question, when you removed the duplexer and went double antennas, were you able to increase your transmission range from getting the additional power back that the duplexer was robbing?
    Thanks, I'm looking to build my own and would gladly use 2 antennas if the power gain led to a dramatic increase in range.
    Cheers!

    • @TheNotaRubicon
      @TheNotaRubicon  Před 2 lety +1

I see in your video that you're only using one 30 watt power supply to run both of your Wouxun KG-1000G radio. Do I need to run both of my 30 watt power supply to run both of my radios?
