1991 Bathurst 1000: VN Group A Chasing the R32 GT-R

- A short snippet of Peter Brock in the Perkins Engineering built and prepared Mobil VN Group A Commodore chasing Mark Gibbs in the Gibson Motorsport built Bob Forbes GIO R32 Skyline GT-R in the early stages of the Tooheys 1000 of 1991. It includes some fantastic in car footage from the VN (not previously posted online) courtesy of the fantastic 7 Sports coverage with its Racecam technology.
As history would show it was a dominant year for the R32 GT-R with the Skaife and Richards car taking pole and the race win and Marks Gibbs and Rohan Onslow taking 3rd albeit with a bad misfire in the closing stages of the race. Peter Brock and Andrew Miedecke would finish 7th after Allan Moffat's Cenovis Sierra was disqualified due to an illegal diff ratio and an electrical gremlin plagued them early on with Miedecke at the wheel which also saw them drop to as low as 35th place.

So many good people and things gone, P. Brock, Group A, a proper GTR with an in line 6 and the raucous Aussie V8. Glad I was alive to see it.
Unfortunately I wasn’t
Part of my childhood, it was an epic time.
Its crazy watching this. It almost feels like the end of an era, where the big, heavy V8 cars were just "Obsolete". And here comes this guy being legendary, refusing to give in.
It really was mate!
Except the vn is light than the GTR. Mainly due to the crap build quality haha
@@davconelectric no because of the lack of an all wheel drive system
@@TheWretchedWorld that also
Did the 1991 GTRs have the added weight due to regs?
Best sounding V8 On earth
Brocky wringing the neck outta that VN! Loved the sight snd sound of that beast which was well sorted by Bathurst. I was trackside that year snd remember the crowd was mental for Brocky!
The teams did well in such a short period to get the VN somewhat competitive. If the VN had come to scene a year earlier I think I could've really stirred the pot with some development time. Look at the VL Walkinshaw, after it's release in 1988 and it only got quicker and quicker each time a top team ran them.
So was I. Got some great photos of Brocky and Perkins in the pits after the race
Two cars ,
One is a twin turbo AWD inline six.
And the other is a RWD V8
What an Era 👌👌
They probably replaced it with solid links, but the R32 also had the HICAS 4 wheel steering system which made it sound even more imposing when the Bathurst commentators described it as the ''600hp, twin turbo, 4 wheel drive, 4 wheel steer Skyline GTR'' It certainly stuck in my mind..
In reality the 4 wheel steer was removed as the car was more prone to crab walking. In 1990 when they mentioned it, it was largely for marketing purposes 🙂
@@TouringCarsofAus My mate still has it working on his R32 GTSt, can't say I've driven it enough to make my mind up, but I'm no fan of the old Honda Prelude 4WS, that did crab like crazy. I know it's a different system to the Nissan one and perhaps wasn't working that well, but felt quite disconcerting to me.
Now let's ponder that the big three in this era were a lightweight rwd 2 litre turbo four, a high tech AWD twin turbo inline six, and a red 5 litre v8. Racing is not like this anymore.
And it’s a Aussie made 304 built by Larry Perkins ?
Wow. That thing sounded absolutely amazing
That 304 is deadset singin'!
The last year they really screamed. 1992 brought in new noise regulations so the 304s and later Chev V8s never sounded this great again.
That sound is sweet they were the days of racing
@@TouringCarsofAus No rev limit in '91.. The Perkins/Mezera car had a random misfire issue, then dropped a valve.
What happened after '84 Bathurst? Group A...Nus killed it.
Many motors ago I had a VK with a LV2, valve bounce was strong in that one, no fun without the B cast heads. Dodgy ign module, fuel pump relay and that plug on the sender unit, had fun with the thermal paste, adding a Skyline external JECS fuel pump(high pressure), binned OE relay, manual relay to a toggle switch. Sent it, the float valve held for a few days on the DIY Rochester Quad fuel injection, long enough for the LV2 to liberate itself from its mounts. Those Opelfeit M21's are not meant for V8's that talk, they're not Muncies.
I upgraded, Mopar..
Enter the under sung 318, had one chained into a Val ute, it called the LV2 a boat anchor twice from its two pipes.
A727 didn't have time for conversation with a toybox.
@@adamperre4852 The Lotus and GT500 'tina day's? Damn, no HQ footage and audio available it seems.
@@iBigEbALLs wow me too I got a VC ute 360 727 9 inch my old vk 308 no chance the 360 would of eaten the vk Mopar or no car still miss the old vk commy but.had some good times in it
Such a glorious sound from that v8, back when race cars were modified street cars with a cage (within reason of course)
except godzilla which was basically a Gt3 car-- should have never been allowed!
What a car. Can’t believe he’s gone😭
Those 304's were pretty shit hot back in the day.
One of the best v8s ever made
Agreed mate. A real shame it got replaced by the Chev engines.
Anything made here is better than outsourcing, is a shame alright. When your manufacturing role is cut and shut, then inferior product is imported at a greater unit price. I will agree in that sense.
Won't be long until the only things made here are babies, where we are being led by those over privileged muppets called MP's.
Hell yeh ,watch Larry P interview on it ,very interesting
Great V8. They were not perfect. Rear main seal prone to leaks and only 2 bolt mains although Larry may have converted to 4 bolt ? Arguably a better sounding engine than chev small block IMO.
@@matthewdouglas4791 vn group a cars featured 4 bolt mains chief
Bloody fantastic I'm from the UK and preffered the aussie racing to our own
Even though I'm a huge ford fan I love the sound of that v8 holden
And for me djr was the man 😁
Cheers for watching mate! Glad to hear you've found our little channel. The V8 Mustang sounded pretty sweet too 🙂
@@TouringCarsofAus great little channel mate seen most the group a races when they were on TV in the UK ( when TV was worth watching ) was only around 10 when I seen dj have a blowout on conrod in his rs500.... ever since me and my dad have been hooked
Even owned a cosworth between us 😃
These times with all the manufacturers in for a go was the best 😀
One day will get a television director that actually understands Motorsport
Gotta hand it to Brock, love the 32 GTR but hearing and watching him do that is admirable in a rwd V8
listening to this makes me proud to own a manual 5 litre 👌
Imagine if Brocky was driving a GTR in this race.
this is an ending that could never be replicated
Same hp brocky would of left them for dead just look how close he came to the so call Godzilla in a baby v8 😂
Oh yeah just in he middle of a race lets just have a casual chat over the coms ;) What a boss
This video needed to be longer😭
Fight of physics, a race of cars
I Love This Era Of Touring Car Racing
The king……..R.I.P.
R32 GTR....The GOAT!
When touring cars were great because you could buy a road car like the one you saw on the TV car manufacturers forget that that's why today's motor racing sucks
Imagine following that thing round, blowing smoke on every change.
You'd be wondering which corner was going to have an oil slick on the apex
It's FUEL SMOKE...not oil clown
Fuel not burnt on overrun...nothing to be worried about..
@@feydespiel. And compressing @21psi
Knowing how good he was it must have been demotivating watching the 32 just pull away out of the corners. Brock was running that car the best anybody could and it’s just not enough.
Brock behind the wheel of an R32 GTR at Mount Panorama ......why didnt it happen !
The Nissan was the enemy back then.
@@alexjohnwardBrock drove almost everything at Bathurst, I wouldn't be surprised if he did fancy a go in the GTR..
@@tonybolstad9514 True!
A Swiss watch against a Timex from the 1950s.
Nice racing
Sure was a great era of racing!
@@TouringCarsofAus Something special we will probably never see again .......
Agreed mate! Although at least there's plenty of historic meetings throughout the year to see some of these fantastic cars back in action.
The Holden’s were nearly 4 seconds off the pace.
Magic moments of motorsport box set I have series 1234 hehe DVDs are good
How many laps into the race was this bit where they tried talking to talking to Brock?
Will need to check that actually mate, not 100% sure but we're sure it was within the first 20 odd laps of the race. Will need to get to you on that one!
What would be the weight difference between the 05 and the Skyline??

Goodness me the driver is up on three wheels into the first turn
That's so cool....
Wow...that is mad skills....

Always gets cut when it's a good bit fmd
Throw a fkn owl for a chat
Do have a looksie, autograph ?
Good to see the big aussies give the little Japanese buzz boxes a run for their money.
GTR FTW
If Godzilla hadnt come along and crushed all comers, would Group A have continued?
To be completely honest, highly unlikely. The Sierra RS500 basically started the slow decline of Group A due to the fact you had to have one to even have a chance of running at the front of the field for the most part, especially in Australia. The GT-R essentially added the final nail to coffin. I think the large investment by manufacturers and the fact that if you wanted to improve the existing model, you had to develop than produce 500 to be sold to public so in the end, the rules of Group A itself caused it's demise. That's just my opinion however, it is still and always will be a fantastic era of motorsport in Australia nonetheless :)
@@TouringCarsofAus i suppose what i didnt say... was that Group C, then Group A, after all these years, were in my view 100x better than the V8, two-make shite we have suffered ever since. Diversity of mostly relatable road going cars was incredble, Sierra RS500 aside, which we never saw in a showroom.
@@richardcunningham5540 Agreed! Although Group C had quite a large bias to the Commodore it was still great to watch with the XD/XE Falcon's, RX7 and eventually the BMW 635 and Nissan Bluebird Turbo.
I have to admit, the first season of the 5L tourers was awesome because we still had the E30 M3s, albeit severely handicapped so they couldn't beat the V8s, especially at Winton or Lakeside where there times were slower than Tony Longhursts 1992 laps. After that, it's for the most part one sided. Group A was like this but had years like 1986, 1987, 1990 and 1992 where there were multiple winners in different makes and models. I completely agree, the current formula Australia is running is severely outdated and the cars are completely irrelevant to me in my honest opinion. I generally stick to watching the historic races, TCR, TCM and S5000.
No
Group A was going anyway. Manufacturers hated building homologation specials.
Also, the GTR was doing well here, but globally, the E30 M3 won the most races in Group A.
I think Group A and Group B produced some of the best road going cars in history.
The early years of Group A were great - BMW 635Csi, Volvo 240T, Commodore, Rover Vitesse, Jag XJS, Toyota Supra and Alfa. Post '87, the rise of the E30 M3, RS500 and ultimately the GTR meant the days were numbered. The cost of producing these examples became too much, even for Ford, Nissan and BMW.
Always wondered how the E30 M3 would have performed with a turbo bolted to the S14 (bearing in mind BMW's expertise with F1 turbo using the same engine block).
Whos gunna play chook. Driver gets it over the line 😂😂😂
1:42 two Japanese gtrs , side by side one Mazda one Nissan!
I assume you've mistaken that AE92 FX Toyota Corolla GT for a Mazda Familia/323 GTR
Motor racing as it should be, minus the four-wheel-drive.

Chasing is the WRONG title...it should be FAILING to CATCH a GTR
One lap doesn't make a race though :)
@@davidpardy no...but what car Won....A GTR!
If the V8s were the same weight it would of been a different result
If, If, If........
All we can say now, if only
@@TouringCarsofAus Well I can say more
Not really.. the VN Group As looked impressive on paper with more power and a 6 speed Hollinger which was the only other car in the field to have 6 gears aside from the GTR but were still bigger and had shit aero compared to the VL Walky of the previous 3 years.. around 8km/h quicker down conrod on average but good luck avoiding lockups or getting the same mid corner speed and grip that the VLs had over a 30 or so lap stint.. having less downforce will nearly always have those drawbacks.. why do you think larry went back to a VL the following year in 92? They could actually hold the road alot better.. Now if the VNs had more aero, or if the VL Walkys had the 6sp Hollinger - THAT would have brought some very different results for Holden at bathurst and even the ATCC
100% Agree. Sadly Holden designed the aero kit of the VN to be a lot more subtle as many complained of the VLs over the top styling as a road car. In turn it could keep pace with the Sierra but lost out in corners.
