Chinese Steam Train in the US: Iowa Interstate 6988

  • Iowa Interstate is a freight rail carrier operating in the Midwestern United States between Council Bluffs, Iowa and Chicago, Illinois over former Rock Island Railroad trackage. In 2006, the railroad began operating two former China Railway steam locomotives that were built in the mid 1980s for special events. Railroad investor, Henry Posner III, purchased "QJ" type locomotives 6988 and 7081 following their retirement from regular passenger and freight service in China in 2005. In this video, we will follow locomotive 6988 on some of its final trips prior to its removal from service for a federally mandated 14 year boiler inspection in October of 2021. We will follow the big 2-10-2 type locomotive on a series of trips over the railroad's mainline between Newton and South Amana, Iowa.

    Qian Jin takes a place in my memory of train forever. I took countless trains hauled by Qian Jin class back to 80s and 90s in China. It is the symbol of China railroad trains in my opinion. Sad to know they cannot run along tracks anymore. I heard that total three QJ’s were imported to US. The third one was sold to RJ Corman and numbered 2008.

      They are classic Chinese mainline steam. One of the largest productions of any locomotive ever, steam, diesel, or electric. 2008 has been donated to a group in Kentucky and I believe they have plans to return it to operation.

      I see it as a very good thing that there are at least some of the Chinese “ late steam” locomotives are safe in the United States, where they will not have to be at risk from being scrapped, or being subject to the possible turmoil that might occur over there. If there is one Chinese locomotive, I really wish got imported to the US. It would be SY 1772 because it is the final production locomotive for industrial uses ever made and was completed somewhere between late 1999 and early 2000. I really hope it doesn’t get scrapped or otherwise destroyed/abandoned.

    What’s interesting is that the 6988 will be placed into long term storage and the final excursions are done. Those red passenger cars that Iowa Interstate has owned are former Pennsylvania Railroad P70 coach cars. A while ago, the Railroaders Memorial Museum mentioned there are P70s they will be working with to be part of the excursion/exhibit train to be pulled by Pennsylvania Railroad K4s no. 1361. I wouldn’t be surprised if those P70s are acquired by the Railroaders Memorial Museum.

    • @kc130flyer
      @kc130flyer Před rokem +2

      @@rogerlollar4325Well, there are many reasons. Under the CCP, you have a controlled economy that can artificially manipulate costs. That is the simple answer. But really there is much more to it.
      In China they have an abundant pool of labor. China has more people unemployed or under-employed than there are Americans employed in full-time jobs. A larger workforce pool means you can pay less (simple supply and demand economics there).
      Look at the greatest jump in labor costs in the history of the western world, the Black Death in Europe. With 30-50% of the population wiped out, employers had to actually pay people to work for the first time. It both ended the feudal system and created the middle class. The more workers in the pool, the less wages are required because employers do not have to competitively raise wages to attract workers.
      Then you have the various environmental laws which in North America cost industry billions, and is in turn passed to consumers through higher prices. China has their own version of these laws, but they are largely unenforced or outright ignored. The World Health Organization estimates 750,000 people a year die in China from the effects of pollution.
      Next up you have the numerous workplace Health and Safety regulations In North America, the costs of OSHA, EPA, FRA, PHMSA and the rest of the alphabet soup regulations, drive up the cost of doing business. This includes things like workman's compensation, which is unheard of in China. A worker gets hurt? There are about 10,000 more ready to step in tomorrow.
      As far as coal prices go, again a controlled economy can set prices, but when you are hauling coal trains with steam engines, it is easy to get the coal into the tender straight from the mine head. I believe this was the same reason the N&W held on to steam into the 1960s.
      But that is just my opinion. Your mileage may vary.
