The Audi S1 Is The Most Expensive Mistake I've Ever Made!

  • I honestly thought I bought a cracking car to rebuild on my channel, Little did I know how expensive it was going to cost to repair.
    This is the most money I've ever spent on a salvage car and I've probably lost most of it. If only I had done my checks before bidding, what's next for the Audi S1? What's next for me, should I quit?

    When I first started a similar salvage rebuild on an S1 a few years ago here in Australia, I stumbled upon your channel as one of the only CZcams content creators that has actually taken on the task of repairing a crash damaged S1. You’ve done a fantastic job with this car, & I’ve rewatched your S1 videos a lot, both for educational and inspiration purposes to continue on with my own build when the constant frustrations of finding more damage, buying more parts and trying to find the spare time and money to keep going on with a project that has ended up costing more than it’s actually worth. So take comfort in the fact that you’re not the only one to take on one of these cars only to realise that it makes absolutely no financial sense. Having said all of that, sometimes you just have to cut your losses if it means you can reinvest in other projects that make better financial sense. Best of luck with the future sale.

      Thank you very much for the support I’m extremely grateful, you are right when I first bought the Audi s1 there was literally no content on CZcams, that was one of the main reasons why I bought it, I honestly thought it would boost my channel, boy I was wrong the s1 just doesn’t have the following like the S3, but I carried on anyway, I’ve learned loads from this car, and it give me the confidence to try anything, I’m glad that my videos helped you, that’s why I film everything, there’s always someone wanting help. I know I haven’t failed because I repaired everything wrong with the Audi and more but after owning it for 2 years the prices of cars have fallen drastically, and I’ve left it too late to make my money back. They are definitely worth more in parts 😂, thanks for watching 👀

If you get a couple of cars in that people need, aka daily drivers/first cars etc you know there’s a demand for that. You could definitely make some more content with the S1 to bring some money back from it, reviews/track days. Good luck 😊

    Thankyou for the update.
    I don't know what the best route is, maybe consider sticking it in one of the car auction sites, or checking values from WBAC or online sites like Motorway or Car Wow etc.
    Then maybe concentrate on cars that are less sporty, and where there is a bigger market for the resale.

  • @Lowereast61
    @Lowereast61 Před 3 měsíci +3

    I repair and flip a few all be it I live the opposite side of the country to you. I’ve done 5 in the last year as a hobby really, but I was a body technician in my younger days, so repairing them is the easy bit. I’ve made money on every one of them. I think the key is to try and buy only cat Ns as there is less chance of nasty hidden damage. Do your research before bidding. HPI and closely look at the MOT history. I won’t buy anything that mentions corrosion in past. I generally buy smaller older cars 8 to 12 years old. I’ve found people are less bothered about if it’s cat registered when spending less than £5k. I made my biggest profit of £1800 on a 2012 Mini (very low mileage) that I repaired over a weekend and that included a service. So keep going you can obviously repair cars, what be selective on what you buy.

    • @Lowereast61

    • @Lowereast61
      @Lowereast61 Před 3 měsíci +1

      Oops, forgot to mention a few other things. From what you can see price the parts you need and research what you feel you can get for the car when repaired and work out what you are prepared to pay for car which will give you an acceptable profit and then stick to it. If you are out bid there will always be other cars to buy down the road! Hope some of this helps.

    I hope you don’t give it up my guy!!! What you need to do is get what you can for the s1 use that money to buy something with good profit in…flip it asap…and so on!! I know it’s easier said than done….but you can make the money you lose back but you need to get the money in that car to do so. It’s not like your starting with no money to buy. Like you said that s1 is going to lose money the longer you keep it!! Or look for someone to part ex a car plus cash either way…you got cash and another car that you can make money on or part ex with something where you give the s1 and cash for something with good money in… I know you’ve probably thought of everything Ive said…so remember life is a road of ups and downs…with the skills you have with repairing cars and making videos…I’m sure you will get there!!❤

  • @JamesTargett-um4dm

    I think you have some options. No harm in taking the S1 to Calvin and seeing if you can reach a deal. You could break it. I reckon you'd get ur money back but it would likely be slow. I wouldn't auction it I reckon you'd make a fairly big loss on it. I love your videos, I like the style you present them in and the way you explain things is great. Don't give up ur clearly very talented. We can all be guilty of buying cars we like. I bought a Corsa Limited Edition from auction and turned out it had a snapped camshaft, replaced the engine (paid for this to be done) and ended up losing £ on it when I first thought I'd make a reasonable profit. On the plus side it has a very happy 1st time driver owner. That was good to see. Research is key but ur giving urself a hard time, unnecessarily I think. I think a big selling point for ur S1 is that you've documented its rebuild on CZcams. Try to get out of the S1 with the smallest loss and move on. Cheap cars sub £5k I reckon with the occasional Cat car if it's unusual or very low mileage. Your speciality might be ones with mechanical damage as you'd probably know how to fix them up. Hope your feeling more upbeat soon 🙂

    Hi buddy. I have been doing Copart for 5 years. Nearly everytime I see you buy one, I can see reasons I wouldn't have touched it. The Polo for example looked "modified" and a bit "boy racer". Therefore in my mind would put me off as having a "hard life". Which turns out it has. Firstly, stick to small cheap cars that don't cost much, are easy to fix and popular to sell. Fiat 500 1.2 not twin air, Ford Fiesta 1.2 not the 1.0 and stick to that one car type that you end up knowing inside out and build up a knowledge base on. Look at the mot history indepth and avoid cars with lots of advisories carried through repeatedly. Generally means the previous owner didnt have or didnt want to spend money on the car so chances are it's been neglected and walk away. Spend time looking at the mot history and don't just jump on the auction last minute. I have done it twice and twice have been burnt without enough time to study everything and do due diligence. At the end of the day there are no guarantees and it is pot luck to a degree, but you can limit your risk by prior preparation into a car your interested in. Go back to basics and start afresh with smaller cheapies would be my advice. Good luck.

Part of learning is failing, ive lost thousands on bad cars in the past, but you've gotta pick yourself up dust yourself off and learn from it. Biggest lessons in life are normally painful ones, on to the next car/project and keep your chin up.
    On a side note i will say to avoid Category cars full stop, unless you live in London or somewhere metropolitan i wouldnt bother as theyre a hassle to shift.

    TBH for me that mileage discrepany shouldn't put off someone whos willing to buy a write-off cat N/S car. Especially when you have the video/pictorial information on the damage and repair - probably safer than buying some straight cars. The discrepancy is 9403 miles, and you don't need an HPI to see it, its evident to anyone who does a simple MOT history online - available free to everyone. And as you can document the true mileage from the control module anyway. To me its all about the value of the car being reasonable to its status. And the rest of the MOT history seems sound, most likely a clock swap. As long as you provide the true/real mileage then there is no issue, just as it would be for any car that has had a genuine clock/dash change. IMO this is part and parcel of a Cat car anyway, lack of previous history. So its an Audi S1 - Sept 2014 with 66k miles Cat N with repair evidence... As long as the value in ££££s is right then why be put off.

    Keep your chin up mate and turn it around. I would buy cheap everyday run abouts under a £1000 with a long MOT, with a view off making a few hundred quid on each one. Use the profit to offset the Audi. You won't make any profit but you will bring down what you have invested in the Audi. There are probably more people out there that require a car between £1000 and £2000 than you realise...Good luck mate and keep going. The secret with the car game is buy as cheap as possible without lots of work, make it easy for yourself...

Your best bet is try and sell it out of your area. I've made the same mistakes on my cars but I learned from the painful mistakes and losses lost 12k. Don't give up on cars that passion we have for them is what will help you win long term however when buying them think like a business man how much am I buying this for? how much will parts be? how much are these selling for in my area? is this car popular/reasonable enough in price to sell fast? I started asking those questions and became profitable fast

    I really feel for you. A bitter pill to swallow, but you really need to cut your losses with the S1. Its value is only dropping and they have a fairly limited appeal.
    Copart prices are all over the place and they seem to be concealing damage like never before. If you keep going with salvage, avoid impulse bids. Do research and study the pictures carefully.
    You don’t need to buy supercars to produce good videos. Look for small, saleable cars with limited damage. I always make sure that I can get my money back from the bits just in case the car is a dog.
    With your work ethic, might be worth buying cars and making money with mechanical fixes and detailing. Plenty of candidates available on Marketplace or auction. You can quickly make your losses on the S1 back with some fast flips. I am sure there will be some great videos in there too.
    Good luck buddy.

    If you sell it, do a series on YT about making the money back you lost on this deal. Give us a running total as costs go out and hopefully profit come in.

    Love your channel, and greatly admire your work ethic, but you have to stop losing money, even if it takes a year to part out the Audi, if it makes you the most money, I don’t see any other viable choice, but first I would research how much Audi s1 parts are going for to make sure it’s worth all the effort, plus on CZcams a lot of channels put out a very sanitised version of the truth, done to get views and clicks, and I don’t think all the success shown is anywhere near the truth.
    You have to think of yourself and family first, and look at a different way to make extra cash, buying stuff is easy, selling it a lot more difficult. Good luck and best wishes on whatever you decide on.

Could you get your name out locally as a good trustworthy mechanic, charge very reasonable rates and still get to do the CZcams side of it to earn a bit more from that. If you charged out at, say, £10 per hour for mechanical work and did a couple of weekends a month you would still be pulling in some cash rather than losing it on cars that are hard to sell on.
