- From the first time I met him and mistook him for the gardener to the last time I cooked for him and he stole my lamb chops I loved cooking for Prince Philip. He was a master chef on the grill, always keeping the palace chefs on their toes and even teaching me how to peel fruit, the correct way, his way.
One of his favorite dishes was Crepes Islandaise, a recipe that he gave to the royal chefs and requested many times at his private dinner parties. In this video I share the recipe and how to prepare this simple dish.

Crepes Islandaise
Makes 6 portions
1 cup flour
1/4 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking soda (bicarb of soda)
1 tsp vanilla
3 eggs
4 TBS melted butter
2 cups milk
1/4 cup vegetable oil (for cooking the crepes)
1 cup jam (your choice of fruit)
2 cups heavy cream, whipped
1/4 cup powdered sugar
In a large bowl add the flour, baking powder, salt and baking soda and whisk until combined. In a separate large bowl add the eggs, melted butter, vanilla and milk and whisk together. Add the liquids to the dry ingredients and whisk until there are no lumps.
Add a teaspoon of vegetable oil to a frying pan and heat until smoking hot. Carefully pour enough batter into the pan and swirl the pan until the batter coats the bottom of the pan (it only needs to be 1/4 inch thick) Cook until golden brown on the bottom and then flip the crepe and cook until golden brown on both sides. Slide the crepe onto a plate while you make more and then allow all to cool.
Lay out the cold crepes and spread the jam onto half a side of each. Top with the whipped cream and fold over the top of the crepe onto the cream. Dust with powdered sugar before serving. - Zábava
This man's a legend. First time he sees the Queen he runs away from her corgis and makes her laugh.. and first time he met Philip mistook him for the gardner 🤣🤣🤣
"I thought someone was stealing the fruit!"
"Well I am!"
Gold
An unrepentant and unabashed fruit thief! 🤣
It's crazy to me how he was already an "old man" in the 1990's. Sometimes it's hard to forget the length of time between someones 70th birthday and their 100th birthday.
almost 100
Spot on.
He was old in the 80s already
I am 74, but in my head I still feel like 21. Just a pity the body wont do what I tell it to do. I am sure he felt the same. Most people do.
@@lizeggar2421 Great. Stay forever young. If it's the case, you'd be an energetic grandmother!
"What have you got there?"
"Those are for the staff."
"I'll have those!"
Nice.
You can tell Prince Phillip had respect for the work the chefs did.
The Prince had respect for people. I remember he was quite incensed when he heard the term "Human Resource" . He said Human Beings are not a resource. They are the raisin d'etre for corporations to exist.
@@margarettay1358 Hate to be that person, but it's raison*.
@@khalilelfakhri8243 Probably autodistort, striking again.
Are you insane?
@@timlynch5710 no sir thank you sir
You know what's strange to me? We learned so many good things about the Prince since his death, that we didn't know in life. Very sad.
agreed..same. Probably as well, means he stayed out of the limelight..unlike these days=)
you are lucky, had chance to serve Him..
Right? I think one of my favourite stories I learned was when he rescued the HMS Wallace. That story is just...wow.
Same here. I have the sad feeling we discover his nice soul a bit too late... why ?
Not helped by the press...
@@jocelyneb I tend to try to ignore the press. Unless they're down to bare-bone facts and "This is what I am actually witnessing as I stand here in front of the scene", I just ignore them.
"I judge a man by what I see him do, not by what others tell me he has done."
Captain Pellew, from the film "Horatio Hornblower: The Even Chance" ("The Duel" for American viewers).
Darren may I say that this is the best tribute that I've seen to Philip thus far with the most warm and sincere personal touch. 😉
Thank you Geoff
@@Darren_McGrady you're most welcome Darren
I agree
@@Darren_McGrady I agree too, thank you.
Agree 100%. Best tribute Darren. Thank you for sharing your beautiful memories
I honestly thought Prince Philip would outlive Charles. He made it to 99 though! 1 year away from a full century of being alive. Still amazing. May he rest in peace.
what a terrible thing to say, no father wants to outlive his son.
Couple more months actually :(
@Campari Soda news about harry and m was shielded away from him as much as they can
@@Sosoph098 He saw the H and M interview. According to reports he was disgusted.

He was still athletic in his 70s. The prince visited Finland in 1995. He refused to wear a life jacket, even though the lake was half frozen
Well that was just stupid
Anyone who thinks they’re too tough to wear a life jacket, seatbelt, or helmet is a complete idiot.
In 75 years‽
No offense but how does that make you athletic
Seems a bit dim then!
You might not be good at cutting mangos, but you've done an excellent job at this tribute video!
Not too many people know that Prince Philip was actively involved in running the royal estates, and the fact that you as a former member of staff have wonderful memories of working there speaks well of him. How many people can speak fondly of their old bosses these days?
Indeed
😁 Alway helpful in giving helpful and useful and tried and true tips, yup. Definitely, sounds like a relation.
What else do u know..that he does too
Really working your tongue into this tedious bellends ringpiece there Callie
Oh perrr-leeeease stop licking bums just because somebody died. Somebody who had a life of absolute bliss at the expense of the residents of the British Isles. Makes me sick
This is probably the sweetest tribute to Prince Philip :)
Oh, my! That was both delightful and sorrowful 😞.
Lots to come imo.
Very nice but very sad too ...
yeah crepes are pretty sweet
Nice pun, even if unintended
Rest In Peace your Royal Highness, hope there is a barbecue in heaven.
If there isn't, why bother going?
I once heard a story, about the "Pearly
Gates." This common guy, had died, and
was walking down the dirt road, towards
the gate. It was AWESOME! Looked like
the entrance to Buckingham Palace. He
walked past, and found a gate, like going
into a pasture. His dog, from his youth
was there, as well as a guy with a notepad.
The deceased guy asked, what was that,
up the road? Oh, that is to lure in the treasure
seekers. Why is my dog here? She has been
waiting, for 55 years.
Something tells me, The Prince found the
right gate!

I made this dish this morning in honour of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip. Broke down crying watching the funeral, esp seeing Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles . All my love, thoughts and prayers to Her Majesty and her family. He will be truly missed.
He was a gentleman of the old British Empire. Stately and dignified. As an American, I always felt like he was so refined and cultured. He also saw a lot of life. Think about how much the world changed from the time he was born until his death.
In almost 100 years- you're talking about the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s' The Great Depression of the 1930s', WWII (1939-1945), The Cold War (1948-1991), Korea (1950-1953), Vietnam (1959-1975), The Watergate Scandal (1974), The Bicentennial (1976), Disco (70s'-80s). A few more months and Prince Phillip would have been a centenarian!!
Justin, I agree with and appreciate, the fine compliments that you pay Prince Philip. However, he was not a gentleman of the old British Empire. The British Empire ceased to exist in 1945 and Philip didn't marry the Queen until 1947. The Empire was replaced with the Commonwealth and like the Queen, Prince Philip dedicated himself to its cause. The Empire was gone before Philip was on the scene. The days of colonialism ended and were replaced by voluntary membership in the Commonwealth of Nations.
@@maryoleary2037 Well said. My family is from Trinidad in the Caribbean so colonialism goes back until 1956 when the PNM- People's National Movement was established by Dr. Eric Eustace Williams (1911-1981).
@@riyadhrafique8377 Dr. Williams remains one of the most significant leaders in the history of modern Trinidad and Tobago.
@@maryoleary2037 He was described in a documentary as an enigma- which is true. Of course this is decades before my time. I was born in 1989- a presidential election year here in America, Reaganomics was out, Bush's "No New Taxes" was in. 😂
I think this is the first tribute that I’ve seen from a person that wasn’t just someone who felt obligated to say nice things because their jobs on the line
The most genuine and heart warming tributes come not from the uncaring and politically bound. But from the staff and working class who enjoyed his company, and knew the little things about him
💯
When I was in The Life Guards, the Queen and Prince Philip came for lunch at the officers mess and I was on duty. It was my job to look after the Prince. When they were all seated, the Prince asked me for a beer, in a proper pint glass, all the rest had wine. The Queen was very nice as well, I had to pull her chair away at the end of the meal, she said thank you and she slipped the after mint into her handbag.
A lot of people on social media had all sorts of opinions about a man they didn't even know existed until that god-forsaken interview a few weeks ago but the only opinions that matter are the ones coming from the ones who actually knew him. Darren, your tribute echoes all the beautiful sentiments we've gotten from world leaders to palace staff and reveals the true warm and wonderful man that was beyond the stoic facade of a war veteran. Through this you've shown your viewers what tabloids, drama series and books never could. You've done well by him.
Wow, Darren went viral with this video, covered in the British press and everything. Congrats chef!
Darren, this is by far the most personal and touching tribute to Prince Phillip of all. Thank you.
What a wonderful way of remembering Prince Philip may he rest in peace. Thank you for sharing.
My parents met The Duke once, they say he was the most perfect gentleman, an absolute delight to meet
"i thought someone was stealing the fruit" "well i am!"
that is amazing
He knew there was some damn good strawberries in that garden 😂
Poor bloke, he sounds so heart broken that Prince Phillip passed. Like he was an old friend bidding his last farewell, everyone’s with you in the mourning mate, may he rest in piece.
Prince Phillip and Her Majesty Queen Elisabeth, were two anchors of civility and dignity. they always conducted themselves as an example to their subjects. Eternal Rest grant unto Him O Lord, and let Thy perpetual light always shine upon Him. Amen.
You must b party to their dignified life
Heard lots of what they used to do
Thank you for sharing these lovely memories of the Duke, he sounds a wonderful man. No wonder the queen was happy all those years with him.
The BEST Tribute I've seen for the wonderful Prince Philip! Thank you for such a loving, respectful, familiar memorial!
Same for me
Oh Chef Darren I am so
proud of you giving such a beautiful tribute.
RIP Prince Philip.
GOD BLESS.
I love how all of your memories have their own their quirkiness to them and you aren’t afraid to share that with us Darren. I’m sorry for you loss because you truly knew the man behind the crown. May Prince Philip Rest In Peace and God Bless to you and yours! Cheers! ❤️
Prince Philip sounds like a wonderful man 🙏 Rest In Heavenly Peace Phillip 🙏♥️🙏
I could listen to these stories the whole day!!!
Actually when I read about the news, my mind soon turned to you because I remembered your stories about him. What I learned was that both Philip and Elizabeth could be surprisingly down to earth people.
Hahahahaha
He probably tells these stories many times, but his facial expression still sparkles with excitement. I can tell he genuinely respect and love the royal family and prince Philip. What a lovely tribute to the Prince
I love him even more now that I know he didn't drink wine and was a beer drinker. Rumour has it that he still drank Double Diamond even when it wasn't served in pubs any more.
When I saw the staff line up outside Windsor Castle at the funeral and instantly thought of you. Must have been a very emotional day for everyone who knew him
I love the fact that the prince love's our pancakes
@@ijemand5672 it doesn’t rly matter since if they’re from iceland i doubt english is his first language and it’s a youtube comment anyway
@@ijemand5672 So you are open to learning? Cool! Lesson number one: next time you want to politely correct someone, try using a friendlier tone. For example: "I bet Iceland is as lovely as it's food! It is commendable that you are trying to learn a language other than your native one! Not many people do, especially where I come from :D As a native speaker I noticed a little mistake in your comment- it's spelled loves and not love's :) I hope that was helpful! "
@@ijemand5672 you’re coming off as condescending since none of us are your peers that’s all. There are always better approaches

Chill guys, he just corrected his grammar, and for free... I can thank many people on the Internet for calling out my mistakes, if they say extra nice stuff that's just a plus (as long as they don't call the guy making the mistake dumb or idiot it's really OK)
D-Mac,
Your tribute was well done. Philip was a mans man. There are damn few of his type left in the world.
He didn't suffer fools, told it like it was, and (as a military man) respected people who put time and effort into doing their jobs. Respect.
An awesome tribute for an exceptional man. He had a wicked sense of humour. well documented by his many gaffes. RIP SIR.
I recall on a tour of Africa he asked a group of Tribesmen If they still chucked spears at each other.
Prince Philip was younger when Darren cooked for the Royal Family. He must have had a real presence with the staff, especially in those years. Thanks for the tribute.
I’ve loved hearing people’s stories of Prince Philip this past week. It seems as though everyone who met him has fond memories of him. He was a great man. Rest In Peace Prince Philip.
Such a shame though, that we're only finding out about him now
I'm so sorry for the loss of such a great man that you knew so well
What a really nice memory of Prince Phillip. How great that he loved a good BBQ like we do here in the U.S. and the love of food and cooking! He seemed like a fun-loving and down to earth man. He seems truly missed. God bless his soul.
I had the pleasure of having lunch with the Queen and Prince Philip a couple of years ago, and the food was at another level. A very special day.
Rest In Peace Prince Philip.
What wonderful memories of a special man. I like to think that Prince Philip is in heaven teaching the angels how to cook BBQ while drinking a good beer. Blessing to you and to the Royal Family.
He was a proper German Prince.
Omg…you made me cry..thanks for honouring Prince Phillip..

The tale about you thinking that the Duke was the gardener made me laugh ! HRH.The Prince Phillip, will be sadly missed. He was one of the stronger generation and his motto, " Get on with it". A rock to our Queen, Long Live Our Noble Queen.
He loved eating the wild game and food from the gardens... The Duke sounds like my kinda guy
Prince Phillip was a fine man. Sorry for your and Great Britians loss. May he Rest in Peace and may you cherish your memories.
I stayed because I no longer was hearing the story of a prince but the memories of a friend.
Your sense of storytelling is fantastic. The connection between food and the human element makes your CZcams channel really fun to watch... better than boring ole TV. Thanks Chef.... RIP HRH
A touching tribute to Prince Phillip from a man who loves the royal family deeply.
This makes me miss a memory I didn’t even have
What a lovely tribute, Chef. It's a privilege watching you retell the privilege of serving such a fine man. I am. Duke of Edinburgh Award winner and always admired him. May God rest his soul and provide his family with the comfort of knowing His Royal Highness is with Him.

Pharmacy tech here, just finished a shift of covid testing. This weekend I"ll be vaccinating people. Tomorrow on my day off I'm bringing my car in for work first thing in the morning and knew I wanted to get home to some comfort food. I had three eggs to finish off by next week and now I know what I'm using them for! I loved the stories in this video - halfway through them I realized I was smiling ear to ear. Have always admired the Duke very much. As an American love the royal family.
Such a genuine way to remember him with his favourite food.
You can tell he isn't comfortable yet referring to Philip in the past tense. A couple times he slips up and uses present tense purely out of habit.
My parents sent me away to a New England boarding school, and the first day I was there I confused the headmaster for a maintenance guy because he had on work boots and clothes, and was fixing some old push mower...Guy was a legend... George Bartlett was his name.

Phillip was a good man. It's easy to see why the Queen fell in love with him and they had such a strong relationship, despite the hardships, when even the chefs have nothing but good things to say about him.

What a lovely remembrance of Prince Philip. I have always been interested in the royalty of Great Britain. Was so sorry when I heard of his passing.
You can tell him he was really down to earth. And just trying to be his best to just like regular man like many of us..
I have seen a number of tributes to Prince Phillip since his passing, and they all come down to the same thing, he was a kind down-to-earth man. Being an outdoor guy, doing BBQ is not a surprise, going down to the kitchen not a surprise either, liked to eat the game he shot not a surprise. A well-lived life. Walking around the home looking like a gardener reminds me of a story that Luciel Ball use to tell, she had a new housekeeper and a tatty man came by with some tomatoes for lucy and she turned him away. Lucy had to explain to the new housekeeper that tatty man was Jimmy Stewart, at the time he was not only an actor at the top of the game then, but also a Serving Brigadier General in the USAF reserves. HRH a gardener, well in a way he was very much so.
I knew his health wasn’t the best but I thought he would make it to his 100th birthday
@Rachel James what antics?
@illegit nasty
@Rachel James besides what disgusting exactly with those 3. She literally said she wantd to kill her self and had mental health issues, which is not unheard of as Diana had Bullima while in the palace and also felt alone due to the loneliness and lack of help????
I do think agree as black person that in some areas she definitely dragged things out when it came to race.
But either way she had the worst media coverage due to her backgorund and its honestly a fact. Anyone with sense could see that it was extremely unfair and distressing to anyone!!
So Therefore they left be they were unhappy. But people failed to see the reason why. So the explained on TV.
End of.
