Was in the RAF in the 80s and saw these operationally. Also as a child at airshows. Great aircraft. Lived near RAF Mildenhall in the 70s. Americans always came out to see it displaying. In those days still in natural metal finish with the bright squadron markings. Still my favorite jet. Very sad at the end to see them being broken up on the Binbrook scrap line.
XR716 was the first aircraft I worked on after leaving RAF Halton, it hadn't flown for 4 years and I was one of 3 Propulsion men working on it. it took a year to complete. Cpl. Mark Gzowski and JT Rob Goggs were the other two.
When Air Shows were worth attending, all the different aircraft types and reasonable entry fees. Now it's just a Typhoon, Red Arrows and a couple of overseas visitors, oh, and ridiculous prices. May as well stop them altogether!
Sunderland Airshow is always free. Hundreds of thousands go to see it. I totally agree about the lack of planes though, here's looking at you Vulcan ;O(
The Wikipedia entry for RAF Finningley mentions a Lightning breaking the sound barrier above the crowd during a display. Does any footage of this exist?
Those were the days! No bloody music playing!!!!!!

Typical RAF at the end. Ladder not working but no problem at all for the pilot... lol
is that the same pilot in the warton lightnings video? He was a small-ish chap but a bloody brilliant pilot. They look about the same height.
The BAe pilot was probably Keith Hartley, brilliant pilot. Jon Fynes was on 5 squadron at that time.
Yes
I have the full EE lightning disbandment final display April 1988
