They mentioned about ‘Florence’ in the BBC Panorama documentary “A Bad Deal For Britain” just a year before the Nimrod AEW was officially cancelled. I sure hope that Shackleton survived long enough till 1991 to get a much needed retirement.

Wow really interesting to see this footage! I've been trying off and on over the last couple of years to find reference to this wreck as when I was much younger I visited here with friends on a dads+kids holiday. We were staying in a bunkhouse nearby and Ive really fond memories of it but neither myself nor my dad can remember where the bunkhouse was - all I know for sure is we climbed up from the bunkhouse to this site. Dont suppose youd be able to give the gps coords to the site itself? (If you even see this comment on a 2 year old video)... I think Im onto sonething with 52.7155518, -3.6534490 but would really appreciate if you knew anything

I’m pretty certain my father helped Neil get the engine all wired up for this aircraft when it was in Leuchars in Scotland. Seem to remember he may have also helped install the props after overhaul. I remember him telling me about it many years ago. It’s a large ungainly looking beast that’s for sure but impressive none-the-less.

Well its been 9 years and you finally got a comment. Thank you for sharing. The a/c was pretty much in one piece after the crash. The wreck was left where it was for a while, being too difficult to recover. However, the wreck kept being reported by over flying aircraft as a fresh accident so, eventually a RAF salvage team hiked up to the site, chopped it into pieces and pushed it over the edge. Eight RCAF men were killed in the crash. They took off on a night training flight and got lost, decended through cloud to ascertain their position and hit the summit. Judging how intact the a/c was when initially found, the crew realised their mistake and climbed to avoid the impact. The cairn of stones roughly marks the point where the aircraft hit and ground to a stop. As you both know, its pretty flat in that area. A few more feet and they would have cleared it.
