12:26 Limitations, Recommendations & Conclusions
Polar just released a new heart rate tracking algorithm as part of the new sensor in the Grit X2 Pro & Vantage V3. This should provide better performance, especially for weight lifting and different types of interval training. By testing it systematically we will see if this new algorithm actually shows promise, so get ready for my initial testing of the hardware and firmware in these Polar Watches.
Okay, so for weight lifting I don’t see a substantial improvement in terms of heart rate tracking, and all the Polar Watches I tested are in more or less the same area. Even with the updated algorithm, many of the peaks in my heart rate are not detected by the Grid X2 Pro and Vantage V3. My overall testing of the new sensor and algorithm of Polar seems to indicate that, at least on me, there hasn’t been a major improvement. Again, Polar said that the sensor performed atypically bad on me compared to most people, so my results might be a fluke. So again, check out more reviews, but I still hope and expect this kind of data driven analysis is useful for you. Also, unfortunately, I wasn’t able to do a test for running because of an injury, but I’ll add that in a future video. If you like the design and functionality of the Polar Grid X2 Pro or Vantage V3, I would recommend getting the Polar H10 ECG chest strap to go with it. That way you get very reliable heart rate tracking, and you don’t have to worry about the performance of the optical heart rate sensor in the watch. If you do decide to get a Polar Watch, a Whoop Strap, an Oura Ring, an Eight Sleep Pod 3, another device or anything at all on Amazon for that matter, even something as small as toilet paper, want to potentially save some money and at the same time support the channel, there are different affiliate and non-affiliate links in the description below that do not cost you any extra and some even provide discounts. Given that you watched this whole video on these Polar Watches, check out this video on the Garmin Forerunner 165, a watch I really liked, or this video on my top recommendations for sport and health tracking. @@TheQuantifiedScientist what non expensive watch will you recommend?
@@jejomac4370Huawei Watch Fit 2. I recommend you watch his video about the Huawei Watch Fit 2.
The algorithm update got me excited..until I saw the numbers. Grateful for you holding these companies accountable for their statements and claims @Rob 🙏🏽
I got a cheap Huawei Band 8 based the infos on this channel. And now I can see that my cheap Huawei Band 8 defeated these expensive and luxury watches. And yes, this makes me happy. :)
Guess why your Huawei is cheap.
Always look forward to your reviews.. Purchased my first series 9 based on your reviews.. keep up the good work thanks Rob!!
Nice video. I'm eager to see your review of the Huawei Band 9 btw ! (do you already have an upload schedule ?)
Waiting for the Huawei Band 9 scientific review. Nice video as always!
always thanks for the useful info
Thank you very much for the work done! Waiting for a new video!
as always, great review. awesome..
Hey Rob, appreciate all your videos!
Just wondering what’s your pick for the best smartwatch that has a long battery life (ie. not an Apple Watch)?
When is the review of Huawei Band 9. I can't wait for that upcoming great review of yours 😁
Not specifically related to this video but great content! It is really intereating to see all the data! I've gone through some of your videos and it is interesting that Apple manages to get proper readings on all different categories and at the same time you have to put that data into different 3rd party apps. They should do something advanced like the Garmin connect so you have one place to manage all.
Side question, by any chance do you know a good recommendation for how to measure heart rate during Jiu Jitsu training? I saw on google a lot of people use chest straps but at the same time with this kind of physical activity where you use your body weight and need to be as tight on the opponent as possible, I wonder won't that be really uncomfortable..
Hi Rob, Sorry for changing the subject but upon reviewing your content I notice the lack of withings watches over the past few years, was worried they had stopped supplying you watches for test as your previous reviews were not flattering.
I love your videos, still watched your content even though I was not looking fo a replacement for my apple watch series 6. But alas the battery is done and the screen is badly scratched, use it heavily every day so cant complain. Have been considering the Withings scan watch 2 /Nova,, have you any plans on testing these watches ? Or have you just given up on withings ? Thanks
Just a note:Polar also supplies the heart rate tracking in GShock Move watches.
Hey Rob, great Testing.
Pls can you make one for the Suunto Race titanium.
In your list "ordered worst to best" i can't find it.
Thanks!😊
Can you test the Masimo W1 watch? I have one and it looks light years better than the ones you are testing for HR accuracy as well as 02 measurement.
Hey! Can you test v2.1 when you get a second? My initial testing on this same algorithm was even worse than yours, but since the update 2.1 about four days ago it's at least visibly somewhat improved, wondering what the analytical details look like
Hello, I admire your meticulous reviews. Considering the Huawei Watch Pro 4 and Huawei Watch Ultimate, but I'm hesitant to buy without your valuable insight. Do you plan on reviewing these models? Thank you.
Thanks a lot ,i was thinking to buy that x2pro,but now not anymore.Im really happy with my Huawei gt runner connected wit polar h10 chest strap.
Chiming in to say I’ll be patiently waiting for Honor band 9 tests :)
Doing some commenting.
Would be nice to see a comparison between Polar H10 and Garmin HRM Pro+
Please Mr. Rob review for Huawei Band 9, thanks in advance
How does Polar sensors perform vs Garmin in none-exercise mode, eg during night for HRV and sleep tracking?
Hoi Rob, would you say the Pacer Pro is now a more attractive buy than it was when it originally was launched? Thanks, fijne dag!
hi rob am looking for budget smartwatch build in gps, what do you recommends for running and cycling?
I would love to request a testing of the Suunto watches, either the Race or Peak Pro. The brand seems interesting and the specs as well! Would love to get a proper review on them!
Can you make testing on Suunto Vertical / Vertical Solar?
Is there any chance to see the review of the mi band 8 pro?👀
Dear Rob I already own an H10 band and an old polar ignite. I’d like to buy a new sport watch primarily to monitoring fitness status (sleep, HRV etc) and also to do some hiking (I’d like the map inside the watch) now I’m uncertain between polar vantage v3 and garmin fenix7 . What would you suggest ? Many thanks
Hi, Android user here. Better to get a Whoop (subscription 260 euros per year) or an old iPhone model with the Apple watch se? It's roughly the same amount of money and Apple would be a one-time buy, not a yearly subscription.
I'm focused on sleep, not only tracking but also improving it. Do you think Apple health would make an impact?
Some watches now report on overnight SPO2. Can you test them for accuracy?
I am using a Garmin Vivoactive 5 that reports overnight SPO2 average about 92% with a minimum of 88%. That is very low and I plan to discuss this with my doctor. I just don't know if I can trust the accuracy..
I didn't find performance data of withings scanwatch 2 and nova will you perform performance analysis of those newer devices?
Hello!! I would be nice if you could test some "Suunto" watch. Thanks!!
Could you please make a video on the ScanWatch 2. I want to know if it’s a good buy. Thanks so much.
When will you receive Huawei Band 9?
Hi, could you test the redmi watch 4? Thanks in advance.

Why? Huawei is a joke on privacy
Can you do video compare PNOE divice and polar ECG about calories burned...
It would be great if vendors can introduce a watch calibration function to align internal and external sensors and make each watch more individual.
That's very disappointing, especially for weight lifters :( - sticking to my Apple Watch for now :)
But why are you? Weightlifting was never about heart rate unless you are doing cardio in between sets.
But yeah these watches s*ck.
@@LGTVQHDyou are absolutely right 👍🏻
My only case is after a set of squats I can match the point where my heart rate is on a normal level to start the next set.
@@LGTVQHDpolar dosent count reps / sets neither tho
@@grimkur really? Man, then Polar watches are definitely a no, no.
@@LGTVQHD Do an experiment, wear an Apple Watch and a FitBit and do an intense leg workout, where you do squats, sumos, RDLs, walking lunges, calf raises, etc - if you're pushing yourself you'll need about 2 minute rest between sets. The Fitbit shows 300-500 calories less because it cannot see your heart-rate peaks. That's why the Apple Watch is better.
What about testing Honor devices (like Honor Watch 4)? it should behave same as Huawei i think, but would be good to test it
Could you review Huawei Band 9 because they said upgraded algorithm ans sensors
Am planning to buy a chest hrm. Which one do you suggest.polar h10 or garmin hrm pro plus. Am a hardcore athlete .

Have you tried wearing the watch on the inside of the wrist? I've found with my Forerunner 955 i get a better signal there, even in cold weather
Awesome idea! Yes, I have been playing with that idea :-)
@@TheQuantifiedScientist The SAME idea has popped up in my mind yesterday and I've being testing ;-) Inside of the wrist trying to position it on 3 ways to test : closer to the radial artery inside/up, closer to the ulnar artery inside/down, or in the middle between radial and ulnar (of course not reading those but just to visualise the position). You have to tighten more, and it's not comfortable when you work with the hand 'except if you type on your keyboard ;-) ) The accuracy is still not good, I've done some tests when I'm in rest, sitting, standing up, some steps etc....Something is really wrong with their FW/SW...when I'm sitting down at 58bmp...h10/v3 are at the same; standing up, h10 goes on 74bpm; the V3 goes down to 48bpm?! It makes me CRAZY. I sit down H10, goes immediately , of course, down to 67bpm; V3 goes up to 90bpm, while I'm already in my chair for 1min, needing 2-3min more to catch the real 67bpm as the h10 is...The WALKING is even worst, sometimes you can have H10 at 70bpm and the V3 at 110bpm; So changing Upside DOWN WILL NOT improve. On the right wrist position the problem is the algorithme. They gave to fire the product Manger! It really sucks as the FW/SW issue...try to walk up and down some stairs?! the sensor itself is able to found the real HR when it "locks" on it. But for example if it shows 60bmp, you want to start the session, and somehow it starts from 90bpm (instead of 60bpm that has been there 1s ago), yes it's possible that I don't know how, it will use the 90 as the reference, going up to 120 for the simple walk, so you'll be wrong for a while as you're on going...if you stop and it "locks" back on 60bpm as real (or as ecg shows), it will use 60 as the reference point and goes up to 70/80/90 max walking, not crazy 120 even 125bpm simple low pace walking...bravo Polar. they believe more IT engineer vs the sensor itself I suppose...
Can you please test the One Plus Watch 2?
can you test the polar variety sense with android app sleep as android?
Hey Rob!
I've been following you for a while now and would like to use this comment to express my gratitude for your reviews. Really informative and fun to watch. (Personally, I would describe myself as a data geek).
I am currently looking for a new chest strap and since I own a Garmin watch, I would like to purchase the chest strap from them (HRM Pro Plus).
Unfortunately, I have not been able to find a dedicated review of this chest strap on your channel or a mention of it in one of your top picks ...
Is there a specific reason for this?
Personally, I would be very happy if you could test this chest strap and compare it against the H10 from Polar in the near future. It would also be great to evaluate the accuracy of the „manual lactate test“ that comes with the Garmin strap.
Is there any way to reward you for your work? I've heard that when donating via superchat not that much of the money sent goes to the creator, so I'd like to "donate“ in another way.
Have a nice evening and stay healthy!
Best regards Tom
PS Please forgive me for any grammatical errors. I'm not a native speaker
Thanks Tom! Both for the suggestions and the compliments
Any news on a one plus watch 2?
If I wear my V3 watch higher -- a full two-finger width above my wrist bone -- and tighter -- digging in a bit -- the readings are better than before, but still not great.
Why did you remove the samsung classic 4
Polar's suggestion that your wrist is the problem is nonsense. Especially when so many competing watches have no problem at all with your wrist. The problem is with Polar! However it is still good to see some small improvements is heart rate measuring performance but it is still a work in progress for Polar.
I tested the gps accuracy a few days ago for a week and it is really disappointing for a dual band frequency watch.. way off sometimes and it takes sometimes 5 minutes to have a fix 😮 and when he found satellites it is just more then 100m off from the place i am standing. And heart rate is definitely not their best. So i send it back to polar. Happy with my garmin epix pro 2nd gen ❤️ okay garmins optical heart rate is not the best too but apple watch has but their battery sucks just 1 or 2 days is too worse. So looked for something in between and garmin has just a little good of everything battery gps accuracy and pretty good heart rate ❤
@13:16... wait a minute... do i actually see the Ultrahuman on your finger ? :D , can't wait for the results !
same here, the new Polar's 'exilir' sensor is very bad. When you increase the running activity and push yourself to more than 160-165 beats, the hearts beats are all over the place. Really i cannot trust it. I think Polar is not listening to us. The problems is not only you, but is me, is the other guy, then the next one, and so on. They just have this new sensor, which maybe somehow, is more difficult to program, or it is not as good as the previous ones.
Which watch are you using? :)
I would like to wach you testing the Xiaomi Watch S3
Hi Rob, I'm chronically ill and am looking for a device to accurately track my heart rate, blood oxygen levels, and sleep quality. The most important being heart rate. I am not active, but because of my condition almost anything can lead to an increase in heart rate and I need to be aware of it so I can take measures to calm down.
I know you normally test the heart rate features based on some kind of activity like weight lifting and cycling, but what about just being at rest and then something like a video, movie, or conversation leading to increased heart rate? Would most of the devices you've reviewed be accurate in that way? I need it to be accurate in detecting spikes and rapid increases.
I've watched all your Oura ring reviews but it seemed one of its weaknesses was heart rate tracking while taking part in activities. Do you know if it's accurate at tracking fluctuations for the circumstances I stated above?
I don't want to wear a chest strap if possible, but I need accurate readings.
I do not have an IPhone so those products won't work for me.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I am in this situation as well. For an inexpensive and light weight option, Robs tests show that the Huawei Band 8 has very good heart rate monitoring across all activities and it has the option for heart rate to be displayed on the screen at all times.
@@spectrixx Thanks! Unfortunately I need one that also can provide accurate oxygen levels. Do you know if any of the watches do that?
Heart rate and Oxygen levels are by far the 2 most important things.
I may end up getting 2 devices since the Huawei band you mentioned is very inexpensive
9:39 , hi can you share a current list ?
We need to make a decision to either buy or not the new Huawei Band 9. Now.
It makes no sense to make a review of old bands as most bands are bought new.

Still waiting for your OnePlus Watch 2 review 🙏
I think next year xD idk why he still test terrible watches
Hey Rob,
I heared your channel likes comments...
Question: Do algorithms adapt over time to a specific user, so that maybe some metrics or sleep tracking get more accurate after some weeks of usage? Maybe you have an answer.
Thanks for your constant efforts!
Hi ! Good question. I actually don't know since I didn't check the sleep tracking yet, but that is a good point. For some trackers this is needed, but others (e.g. Oura) don't have this. I also think it is more often scores that need to be calibrated (e.g. sleep score) and not the actual staging. It might matter if the age and sex are put in correctly
@@TheQuantifiedScientist Hi, I've been asking myself the same question when I've see so poor results, willing to believe that they have anticipated this kind of scenarion, but sadly it's not the case. My V3 is as bad as the first hour...after 1 month now. The idea is so logical but I think that there are no many capable engineers in Polar anymore, if any...Nokia scenario. I know it from many companies cases...like in the life cycle. But for sure it will be done one day in some brands that invest in this research...Apple or Google might be in the future, or some start up with the young "genius" guy, enthusiasm engineer, before he moves to California...
Hey Rob, I'm wondering if I should buy a Huawei GT 3 Pro
or 4 Pro. I don't want to buy the normal 4 because with regard to your tests it went really bad at tracking heart during the weighlifting
Do you think that 4 pro should at least be as good as its older brother? I want to buy it because it has got several useful options which 3 doesnt have, but my main goal is to buy a Smartwach which will show data really accuratelly. Do you have any propositions, besides apple watches which doesnt correlate with Android.

@@Andre-yg3qu not true, but you do need to instal the huawei health app manually, downloading the apk. I had a GT3 pro paired with my Smasung S22 ultra with no issues.
I've been using Polar since forever. That "signal from my wrist is weak for this type of sensor" statement from Polar seems like, well, cope. You're basically a standard European male, in good fitness. Polar is a European corporation too. Who are they testing products on? Whose wrist are the watches made for? It doesn't make any sense.
They are just further and further losing ground, and they also refuse to compensate with pricing. They sell products with a huge brand tax, basically, and riding on the eternal popularity of their cheststraps.
Which, truth be told, are also quite deficient when it comes to longevity, are also overpriced (especially the softstrap for the H10). The rubber rings that are supposed to prevent sweat reaching the two contacts seem to be shrinking due to washing, soap, detergent, and some straps fail in 4-6 months.
I wish Polar would just do the right thing and either properly innovate, or sell cheap. They belong below Coros IMO in pricing. I am not going to buy anything from them until they change, if I can help it.
Why garmin watches with the same heart rate sensor have different score?
My Apple Watch Ultra drops out completely during exercise, leaving big gaps in the data chart. I have to wear my Garmin to view constant heart rate during an activity.
Can you please review Redmi watch 4 🥺
One Plus Watch 2 would still be very very interesting to review
Again and again, we see just how problematic wrist monitoring can be. What works for one person might not work for another...or at least not that well. It would be interesting to try and list all the variables that would make one watch work well for one person and not so well for another.
Waiting fot huawei band 9 scientific review 🙏🙏
almost any watch can have struggles with intervals, i bet if you include at least one steady session for bike or running the results would be different ;)
I am afraid it’s a bit late for Polar and Suunto. Forget Apple, they are way ahead in terms of wearables market share, Polar and Suunto is competing with the likes of Garmin in the niche fitness market and it’s going to be hard to catch Garmin.
Huawei Band 9, please!
Ironic... a new Polar watch (algorithm) doesn't correlate that well with a Polar chest monitor...

Ughh…. Why can’t garmin beat apple? I want to go back. I keep hitting the pause button on my apple …
For a Sports Watch Company, the results are very very bad
So Polar said its the customers fault and their product is perfect. Man I dont know how these companies can lie like that ? Every company says the same thing: our product is superb, premium and perfect and its your fault.

Just got my V3 today and compare it to my apple watch for a walk. Avarage beats were 15 morte than my aw. Disaster even cheap watches do a better job. Cant recommend this watch. 😢
I had one garmin and one polar. They are only marketing. A simple Huwei fit 2 is better.
Why so much focus on accuracy when everyone knows wrist HR simply cannot be that accurate? Polar has tonnes of articles on it and it’s there for reading. If you want reliable HR get a Polar H10 and any watch you like.
If Polar can't stop advertising their once again improved HR accuracy people can't stop saying that it's bullshit.
If that's the case then why do watches like Apple Watch consistently have almost perfect correlation with the chest strap?
Short answer: NO.
So I had them for 5 days and when every day it rose the number of steps by 600-700 just in the time I am drove 20 minutes in the car...or sat at the computer in the office (where the competition won't take a step at me, so with Polar it jumps by hundreds)...that's it completely outside .... Polar really disappointed me!!!!
