IRS is an example of a bad gimmick on paper that worked brilliantly only because the wrestler was a real top-tier talent. A lesser wrestler than Mike Rotunda would have probably never made it over. As it is, IRS was a great gimmick, everyone my age remembers it fondly. Yeah, I am the weird kid whose favorite wrestler in the early 90s was IRS. He was so underrated. Dude was a technician on the same level as Bret Hart, DiBiase and Mr. Perfect. Money Inc. and the Undertaker were the best parts of that last couple years of the WWF golden age. I was so pissed when IRS never got a run as Intercontinental Champion.

You notice how many people have asked for their release from Vince's company over the last few years & alot of it is thanks to Vince's God-awful booking & creative ideas he comes up with for the talent,& what's even more telling is how happy talent like FTR seem to be working for another company like AEW instead of still working for Vince. It should have been a mask that he also wrestled in. That way he could have distanced himself from his WWF personas. The vest, maybe on it's own. I think either the Barbarian, or Warlord wore something similar. Attire can be whatever as long as you get the guy over. Vader's helmet was really pretty dumb as well, if we're being honest, but we give it a pass because Vader was one of the best heels of his era. The red rooster was a terrible gimmick but Terry Taylor
was nothing special as a performer either. He was a mid-card kind of guy.
But the booking decisions are what really killed it. Taylor was presented initially as an idiot who Bobby Heenan was going to make into a star. So he could not be a full heel in the character but at the same time he wasn't a babyface either. He was just literally presented as a loser. Then Heenan turned on him.
Then what do they do? They put him in a feud with jobber Steve Lombardi. Nobody was going to get that program over. Even if Taylor had been a better performer, he wasn't going to get over as a new babyface beating a well-known job guy. Then was into a losing program with Curt Hennig. Then he was turned into a jobber to the stars and essentially discarded.
I still think the gimmick and the booking were designed to bury him. That he got someone mad at him who was important who made sure he was booked in a way that would quickly kill him off to justify getting rid of him. Chicken Gimmick, presented as Heenan's "loser" project wrestler, given a program with Steve Lombardi and then declared a failure. And based on how he talks about the whole thing, Bruce Pritchard was probably involved.
One thing I've always wondered about is if the whole angle with Terry Taylor was originally supposed to be done with Prichard as the manager (as Bobby Heenan Junior). The whole angle seems so minor league to involve Heenan in. But it seems like the perfect angle that they would have used to launch Bobby Heenan Junior.

The Goon is the one that is the best example of what Corny is talking about. Bill Irwin had been working a cowboy gimmick on the indies as "Wild" Bill Irwin for over a decade before the then WWF signed him, and was a great worker. They could have brought him in exactly the way he was, and he would've been an upper mid-card guy immediately. Instead, they gave him a stupid gimmick, and he didn't even make it six months. What a waste.

Sorry if this is patronising. I agree and have long thought this too. Unfortunately Vince (generally) and his people at that time (Patterson, Watts, Jerry Jarrett - who i believe were running the place as Vince was in court, although Vince said he'd run the WWF from behind bars if he had too) will change a long established wrestlers name because of copyright and trademark ownership in relation to merch sales, intellectual property, owned likness, ect as it all equals MONEY and revenue.
Agree with you that it's silly that a wrestler can have a long established fan base, identity and body of work that all of a sudden doesn't exist once they go/went to WWF. Look at Ricky Steamboats 2nd WWF run when they only referred to him as "The Dragon" and didn't acknowledge his IC title run, pedigree or notable bouts he had - all of which would have helped put him AND his opponents over whilst giving them a rub.
Bret once said that Vince treats the boys like prostitutes - you're his favourite one minute, he'll use you, throw you to the side and he'll have a new favourite and you're left there yearning for the attention thats no longer there anymore.

With really bad gimmicks my question to whoever came up with them is "Do you like this gimmick? If a different promotion had this gimmick first would you tune in to watch it or buy a ticket to see it live?" You get the vibe creative is trying to guess what other people would like and failing miserably. I doubt Jim Herd wanted to see hunchbacks, he just didn't know wrestling and was trying to think of something he thought the audience might want to see and came up with something really stupid because he doesn't understand the audience. If you're just guessing and throwing out whatever shit pops into your head and hoping it will stick then you don't understand wrestling and shouldn't be involved in creative. Vince McMahon is an exception though in that he appears to give people bad gimmicks for his own amusement. So he's just extremely immature and willing to piss money down the drain and waste a talented wrestler for something he finds funny for a few minutes.
One aspect that seems to get lost when creating gimmicks is that the gimmick has to be something tough and intimidating. The Big Boss Man is a former prison guard - you can assume that he's had to fight prisoners and thus his experience as a prison guard would give him an edge in wrestling. TL Hopper is a plumber. How does being a plumber give you any advantage in wrestling? It's just a job the guy has. The only way the Red Rooster could get over is if his clucking was explained as caused by insanity and the guy is an unpredictable lunatic. His insanity could perhaps make him dangerous and thus give him an edge in wrestling.

I wonder what Jim's thoughts are on the idea of a meta-gimmick. Like, instead of someone being a "wrestling cowboy" (as there have been many), they openly state in-character that they just think cowboys are badass, so they're adopting some of that for their entrance and gear. Doesn't have to break kayfabe, I mean they'd still play everything else straight, they're just not pretending they actually ARE their gimmick, just that it's something they think is cool and will help them stand out. I think that would be a good way to get some of the more outlandish ideas over, like if instead of believing he WAS a pirate, what if Paul Burchill just said, "some of my ancestors were pirates, so I'm paying tribute to their legacy by mixing it into my approach in the ring." It might have gotten over better.
I mean, he already talked about how when there was a wrestling "mummy," commentators played it that the manager was CLAIMING it was a mummy, but that it was still a big, threatening figure either way, so I don't think my idea is too far from that...
