Jonas's Top 10 plays as ranked by the CTWC organizers. This is an incredible display of Tetris- all within just one day.
In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 6,000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 20 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next?

Jonas was more than a champion. He was an ambassador. He was a pillar of a community. He was the flagbearer. And he will forever be missed. Rest in paradise. Boom Tetris for Jonas!
BOOM Tetris for Jonas!

It's crazy that I miss someone so much who I never even met! I didn't even know he existed until like two years ago. He had a truly unique personality and was awesome at tetris, to say the least. RIP Jonas.
Sucks that he had to die so young, and in a community where no one has died, the first one to pass just so happened to be the most influential, rip Jonas
Instablaster.
RIP to the Champ.
Rest in peace Jonas
I'm still in absolute shock about Jonas. RIP
I just learned he passed away because of your comment, I was watching this old video by chance. I can't believe it, that such a thing can just happen like that.
WAIT HE DIED??? OH MY GOD
NO REGARD FOR HUMAN LIFE
"where is the long bar when you need it". "he gave it to him". "eeeehhh, just a long time yeah!"
"Or the blood spill"
that unfortunate last comment has taken on a much sadder meaning
this didn't age well
@@AntonioSousa-no1tqnah this aged well and was a legendary moment. RIP Jonas
Everyone is sprinting while Jonas is running a marathon. That's why he's so good.
That's the problem a lot of players don't see. Skill-wise there are players out there that can put out a better game than Jonas. The issue is how consistently they can beat him. People tryhard and attempt 'the game' to beat him whereas all Jonas needs to do is play clean enough to win.
It's literally the whole Tortoise and the Hare thing. Playing slow gives you more time to think about your pieces and less chance to mess up.
I have to disagree, I think that he is more skilled than everybody else there, but he just likes to play without many risks, if he wanted to, he could play more aggressive and probably beat them that way to, but, there would be a risk that he loses some games that way..
nah. they are playing tetris bro. lol
@@esmanfransiscus I bet you feel sooo smart
BOOM! Tetris for Jeff.
what happened to jeff? didn't he qualify? didn't the long bars give it to him when he needed them?
Per Gunnar Vik Mjølhus I would’ve given Jeff my long bar
Kaziek Kucykowski Boom! horrible joke.
I was looking for this coment, thank u
Boom! Tetris for Buuucooo ....no.. doesn't work..
RIP to a real Legend, t-spinnin his way through the pearly gates right now
Alex did great but Jonas' consistency is over the top.
That round one comeback was unbelievable.
SuperFly25
I've watched Alex a lot and he's very close to Jonas. He seems to block a lot of Tetris opportunities though.
You can't beat the best!
I originally thought Jonas was all about consistency but the truth is that he just is incredibly good and can manage to play the game at an unbelievable level of confidence, creating space and opportunities with tucks and spins where other players would top out or burn the stack. EVEN AT TOURNAMENTS.
@@andreaurru4990 the only one who can beat him is koryan. The rest is just as if Nadal is playing Pete Sampras. The current Pete Sampras.
3:08 he's building a roof it's raining in here 😂 yeah raining tetris.
323GONZALEZ it's raining Ls and Ts
Yeah, it's funny XD.
*IT'S RAINING TETRIS BLOCKS IN THE CONSOLE*

who is here after hearing the terrible news? I'm sorry to Heather and Jonas family . R.I.P. Tetris God Jonas. Thank you for all the great moments you got me back into tetris.
Rip legend. We will miss your appearance in the CTWC
RIP GOAT
R.I.P the legend...
He will be remembered as one of the greatest of all time, rest in peace Jonas.
RIP. He was a genuinely good guy. Now I will only hear "Boom! Tetris for Jonas" on old CZcams videos.
4:20 this stretch of play is honestly probably the best tetris that has ever been played live in a tournament. Jonas tapped into something here. He's not even real.
mattrg320 Now imagine Jonas, but with TAS. Your brain just died.
Im confused, this really looks like nothing compared to high level TGM or PPT players?
The difference from this (NES Tetris) and newer Tetris games like TGM and especially PPT, is NEStris is way stricter.
In NEStris you have: one piece preview, total random piece order, no hold, no wallkicks, and *locks as soon as it lands* . This makes NES Tetris incredibly difficult to play well and play consistently.
TGM has a nicer randomizer that makes it less likely to get droughts, allows you to slide pieces for a time after they land, and has a rotation system that's more forgiving.
PPT (and all modern Tetris games) guarantee you will get all 7 types of pieces, and have a *very* forgiving rotation system.
I don't mean to say that TGM and high-level PPT aren't impressive, of course, but this is also super impressive given how harsh NES Tetris is.
mattrg320 z
Literally only blinked twice while playing.
RIP The legend
This is standard 2020 play, but Jonas, who was 10 years ahead of his time, has been doing these kind of plays since 2010
Seriously, if there was a competitive Tetris anime, the background music would fit better than a longbar in a well.
No, u.
@kamalindsey Only when its poorly executed. Yes, there are instances of it.
Make it happen. And make Jonas the protagonist.
Watched this video countless times. Even showed it to my mother. I don't know why, because competitive athletes, when they die, it doesn't faze me. But for some reason, the death of Jonas has hit me in a way I can't properly explain. He reminds me of Cal Ripken. Someone who plays a game but becomes something more than the game. An ideal that other strive to become.
He may not have been the best technical Tetris player to have ever lived, but he was the best Tetris champion. The Diplomat of Classic Tetris.
Man, life sucks sometimes.
What a player he was!!! RIP Jonas😞
Props to whoever edited this it's very clean and concise and fun to watch!
We are shocked and heartbroken to share that Jonas Neubauer, 7-time CTWC champion, passed away suddenly on January 4.
Jonas has been an absolute pillar of positivity and humility for our CTWC family. We could have never asked for a greater champ, role model and friend. He was kind, genuine, hilarious, incredibly talented, and a brilliant ambassador for the game. While he was the toughest final boss, he always had the warmest heart. He will live on as a legend in our community and around the world.
Jonas, we miss you, we love you, and we thank you for inspiring us to always be our best.
All the love to his wife Heather, his mother Sharry, his family and friends.
Rest in peace, our mighty hero.

May he rest in peace :'( Such a great player and inspiration!
Rest In Peace absolute legend
I've been watching a few of these Tetris videos, and have to say these commentators are the best gaming commentators ever. They are always flawless, complement each other perfectly and you can just hear their excitement every match.
Went to the toilet for number 2 and was like where's the long bar where's the long bar then BOOM Tetris for jeff
Niiiicccee
Don't you hate it when there's a long bar drought stopping you from Tetris
Lol that would be constipation
Everyone playing checkers while Jonas' playing chess
RIP one if not the best tetris player that I've ever watch. You will not be forgotten. If you can, please give the condolences in his twitter feed:

If you're playing at a level like Jonas starting at 4:20 every car race is nothing compared to that, unbelievable.

Hello brother
@@ItzSonic69 hey
Popped up on my recommendations just now. Kind of weird that it's just 2 days shy of a year since he passed. Miss the GOAT.
I can't get enough of this video
4 years ago and he popped 10 Tetrises out of 53 lines at that level, absolute legend. RIP he’s gonna be missed forever ❤️
Such a legend man
fantastic music!!
You will be missed Jonas. Thank you for being a role model for all of us.
I always come back to this video and every time i can't help but be in awe of this guys insane level of play. The only hope these other players have of seeing a different champion is if he literally just doesnt come to the tournament.
RIP Jonas, You will be missed.
Hope more videos like this one are coming!
Boom! Tetris for heaven, for receiving Jonas

The greatest! 😢❤️
No regard for human life!!!!!!!!!
Only recently got back into Tetris, and after finding Jonas's old videos I realized I was actually at this Portland Retro Game Expo in 2017. I watched a bit of the competition, but I wasn't as interested back then. Wish I would have stayed to watch the whole thing.
This final was incredible, Alex showed up a level rarely attained, he would have crushed any other player than Jonas, and even the Jonas from a couple years ago would not have been able to get back in the 1st and 2nd game.It has been said before, but the list of people who can beat Jonas is very narrow, and Alex might be on top of it.
Ever since ive discovered competitive tetris, i have been at awe at some of the incredible things that these players pull off, most notably jonas (ofc). Seriously, his plays and the level of consistency in the face of such hard core RNG is UNBELIEVABLE. Other games that come to mind when i think about RNG are games like Hearthstone. It gets so much crap about its rng despite the fact that if you know how to play well, you will still consistently make top ranks. This would mean that there is never a situation in which one can not navigate a game involving RNG properly, there is simply no excuses. If you have the knowledge and apply yourself success is inevitable.
ive never played but i feel like a game like that is kinda designed to make sure u dont win (at least very often)
I get where you're coming from but comparing Tetris and Hearthstone is kind of stupid. The RNG in Tetris is much MUCH more meaningful in Tetris, which is all about making the best out of what you get and more notably the fact that the entire game revolves around Tetrominoes makes it more balanced overall. Then again sometimes the RNG fucks you in the butt and there's not much you can do, but since they give them the same pieces it's much more fair imho
Don't see how your explanation makes my comparison stupid considering the situation you describe is literally the same thing that happens in hearthstone, but ok :P
Not to mention in no way did i even give any specific examples, I was speaking generally because im fully aware that the detailed mechanics of either game are fundamentally different, BUT that doesn't mean they aren't both games of RNG and therefore subject to the SAME win/lose scenarios in which one battles RNG
@@eviltim3786 In TCGs the RNG is much more disruptive and I think the RNG to player skill ratio is completely fucked compared to Tetris. In Hearthstone there are so many shenanigans in which you just lose on the fly by mad luck. Not a coincidence that Kolento didn't even make it past the earlier stages while Jonas got to every single final and won all of them but one tbh
Rest In Peace. You were loved Jonas.
Still a legend, Jonas

I hope to see him next year I'm still a fan

no lol
Jeff for tetris boom
It feels weird to say that he is gone.
Crazy to think about.
Keep stacking up to Tetris Heaven Jonas.
RIP you absolute legend
Viva albecete
2:40 Jonas's stacking style baffles the announcers so much they think it's a second misdrop.
Similar stuff happens in chess. There are grandmasters than can make moves that look stupid to everybody else because of their extremely high understanding of the game. Jonas is the Tetris equivalent to Magnus carlsen.
Jonas’ consistency is truly something to behold
