It helped that cell phones back then weren't like today's with touch screens, internet capabilities,social media since it wasn't a thing yet, and built in cameras to take photos and videos. Smartphones or not, why would anyone focus more on their devices than seeing Janet Jackson or anyone else live?! Concert tickets are expensive and more likely than not, a once in a life time opportunity for most to see them perform in the flesh.

I remember when my family bought this on HBO and it was on too late for me to watch, and my grandma ended up taping the whole thing for me on VHS and I treasured that tape! I would play it over and over and try and learn the dances and sing along. Such beautiful memories. Janet is a QUEEEEEN 👑
My grandmother did the same thing. She only had cable in the living room and her & my grandfather's bedroom. So I begged her to watch the show in the bedroom while recording the entire show on VHS. Ahh the memories. But the only slight disappointment about this upload, is when they edited the Rope Burn session(which they did for the DVD) but I remember VIVIDLY, them bringing a guy up before the 1 being shown. And she was like "untie him" 😂😂😂😂

The control medley was absolutely insane. There is only one other concert performer that could possibly top this and he happens to be her brother. Everybody else needs to sit their ass down!
I agree this medley was amazing and I am not sure Michael could do what Janet did. He was super talented and exceled more in solo moves where Janet combines the intricate group chorepgraphy with the passion.

I have seen many of Janets tours but this was my favorite. It was themed from start to finish and Janet has never danced better than at this show. She was on top of her game.

janet was really one of a kind as an artist and live performer. i think janet might have been the first black female to incorporate HEAVY choreography into performances and videos and plus around this time, her competition in the female category were mainly vocalists (mariah, whitney, toni) etc. i also think in terms of shows and touring, she had the best shows. like she had the production, each tour had a theme, the theatrics, she had singing and dancing. she wasnt just standing up there singing .. she gave you a full on show. i think janet was what the industry needed cause before janet came along ... it was an industry full of singers and janet came out and shook things up.
You can see where Beyoncé modelled her choreo style from. That military all dancers dancing the same choreo at the same time type energy. Janet is smoother mover. Like a Sphinx

Absolutely brilliant! I saw this concert in Newcastle upon Tyne in September 1998, by far the best and most entertaining gig I've ever seen. Janet Jackson had the audience eating out of the palm of her hand. When she got the guy up on stage, the atmosphere was electric, so highly charged and erotic, amazing. When the gig finished and we were trying to leave the carpark, I had the cd playing in the car with the windows down (brand new Kenwood system with amp and subwoofer), people were dancing alongside the car, it was insane. It's as if Janet inspired everyone to love each other, a beautiful moment that I'll never forget 💖
And, cellphones didn't gave the capability to take pics or record anything yet. So, no cellphones. You actually used your cellphone to call people, text just a little(because that wasn't a thing yet either really) and make lists only.
Like I really wish I was old enough to experience this era. I was born in March of 97 and the album dropped in October. Janet has set the standard and tone for artistry/performing. The Velvet Rope era saw her yet again do things different from her peers! Just think about how sonically, it sounded like nothing from that time! The album was ahead of its time! This era and album was an experience/groove.

I remember sitting in my living room watching this tour. I was mesmerized by her style, dance routines, and her energy throughout this performance. She's a well-rounded entertainer and the first artist I fell completely on love with. I wanted to look like, dance like. and sing like her so bad.
I watched this LIVE when it aired...recorded it...ordered a pizza. The world was so different in 97, 98. I was 17 going on 18. Im almost 40 now. This concert takes me wayyyyyy back and I still remember it like yesterday.
I mentioned this elsewhere, and I will say it again here: Janet's Velvet Rope era was THE mood of moods! You can tell she was in her element totally, precisely because she scanned through different ones. For ex, Go Deep and Everytime are sheer opposites and yet both show different delicate sides of Janet. Additionally, her hairstyles and colors chosen (i love curly fire engine red!!!) alone, were Oscar worthy. That whole disc was an absolute masterpiece. The choreography of 'Lonely' pioneered something new in the industry. Especially when she performed it live in '98. Velvet Rope stands the test of time time even after nearly a quarter of a century. As well known as Janet is globally, her efforts are still grossly underrepresented. From Josie Baker to Tina Turner to Janet Jackson; I thank these trailblazers!

People don't realize how much goes into putting on these shows and just missing one step can ruin the lighting, cameras for the jumbotron, etc and mess up the whole show. But she stays on cue the whole time. Its more than just singing and dancing. Love how her feet moves to mimic what the dancers are doing with their arms.
I'm watching this in 2021 Janet opening act looking at her is like watching Michael her facial expressions the way she move her mannerisms. Janet is great on her merit but by them being sister and brother they'll always remind us of each other. His energy in those tours were different. Bad that was his most energetic and his vocal peak. Dangerous was smoother but still had pretty good vocals and history was mostly dancing. Don’t put down mj too uplift Janet. Mj is the greatest entertainer for a reason period !

janet was really one of a kind as an artist and live performer. i think janet might have been the first black female to incorporate HEAVY choreography into performances and videos and plus around this time, her competition in the female category were mainly vocalists (mariah, whitney, toni) etc. i also think in terms of shows and touring, she had the best shows. like she had the production, each tour had a theme, the theatrics, she had singing and dancing. she wasnt just standing up there singing .. she gave you a full on show. i think janet was what the industry needed cause before janet came along ... it was an industry full of singers and janet came out and shook things up.

Absolutely brilliant! I saw this concert in Newcastle upon Tyne in September 1998, by far the best and most entertaining gig I've ever seen. Janet Jackson had the audience eating out of the palm of her hand.
When she got the guy up on stage, the atmosphere was electric, so highly charged and erotic, amazing.
When the gig finished and we were trying to leave the carpark, I had the cd playing in the car with the windows down (brand new Kenwood system with amp and subwoofer), people were dancing alongside the car, it was insane.
It's as if Janet inspired everyone to love each other, a beautiful moment that I'll never forget 💖
I saw the same gig in manchester in may 98 Canning and 21 years later still probably the best all round gig I have ever seen !!!

Like I really wish I was old enough to experience this era. I was born in March of 97 and the album dropped in October. Janet has set the standard and tone for artistry/performing. The Velvet Rope era saw her yet again do things different from her peers! Just think about how sonically, it sounded like nothing from that time! The album was ahead of its time! This era and album was an experience/groove.

I remember sitting in my living room watching this tour. I was mesmerized by her style, dance routines, and her energy throughout this performance. She's a well-rounded entertainer and the first artist I fell completely on love with. I wanted to look like, dance like. and sing like her so bad.
I watched this LIVE when it aired...recorded it...ordered a pizza. The world was so different in 97, 98. I was 17 going on 18.
Im almost 40 now. This concert takes me wayyyyyy back and I still remember it like yesterday.

Janet's Velvet Rope era was THE mood of moods! You can tell she was in her element totally, precisely because she scanned through different ones. For ex, Go Deep and Everytime are sheer opposites and yet both show different delicate sides of Janet. Additionally, her hairstyles and colors chosen (i love curly fire engine red!!!) alone, were Oscar worthy.
That whole disc was an absolute masterpiece. The choreography of 'Lonely' pioneered something new in the industry. Especially when she performed it live in '98.
Velvet Rope stands the test of time time even after nearly a quarter of a century.
As well known as Janet is globally, her efforts are still grossly underrepresented. From Josie Baker to Tina Turner to Janet Jackson; I thank these trailblazers!

56:23- 56:30...love how she runs sideways to position herself center stage. People don't realize how much goes into putting on these shows and just missing one step can ruin the lighting, cameras for the jumbotron, etc and mess up the whole show. But she stays on cue the whole time. Its more than just singing and dancing. Love how her feet moves to mimic what the dancers are doing with their arms.
That's dance moves, THAT's what we really need now!

His energy in those tours were different. Bad that was his most energetic and his vocal peak. Dangerous was smoother but still had pretty good vocals and history was mostly dancing. Don’t put down mj too uplift Janet. Mj is the greatest entertainer for a reason period !
