  • this falls under the fair use clause. Here in high quality is the rare follow up to the infamous Phil Donahue show (1986) when he had some members from the New York Hardcore scene on it
Shortly after some of them appeared on the morning show with Regis Philbin as a follow up to Donahue's lack of understanding. Enjoy--- complete and uncut

This is the first "80s talk show with punks" clip I've seen where the hosts are respectful and ask serious, genuine questions... and the punks they pick to be on the show are bright kids, not hand picked to be outrageous.

That’s Ray from WarZone, not punk, that’s the point. There is a big difference. Hardcore may have looked “punk” to people that didn’t know, but hardcore was quite a bit different. Most punks I knew just did it to try and be outrageous, or were posers. Hardcore kids tried to make a difference in the world and probably did more to spread things like Veganism than any other group... and look where veganism is now.

To me, this was the best time to be alive in the entire 20th Century. The music was second to none; and I mean every genre, the movies were awesome, Reagan was president, the U.S. economy was in pretty decent shape( not perfect but no time period is) technology was developing, home computers were entering the market, Apple was born, then Mircosoft, the first cell phone was available and being used by the rich, the fashions were just fantastic, and race relations were better than the previous 20 years before.
The CD came out in 1982, and also the Sony Walkman and later on the DiscMan. People interacted with one another in a normal way, and times were basically normal. Prices were decent, and with a few exceptions, everything was hitting on all cylinders. Today? I don't know where to begin. It's basically the worst time to be alive than anytime period I could think of. I would rather be in 1930's depression era, than live in this immoral, horrible, Godless, apathetic degenerate society.

These youngsters are sharp libertarians. I see nothing wrong with it. I am the same age as these people. I was 20 in 1985. Some of my friends dressed like this. I didn't. But They all loved my Dad. He was born in 1920 (a vet of WWII and Korea) and would take us skeet shooting, golfing, have them over for dinner, boxing matches in the backyard, make fun of their hair, and generally see eye to eye on almost everything (except music) with them. Dad knew we would all eventually grow up.
Dad warned against tattoos. He said something like "When you get older you can get a decent haircut and change your wardrobe, but you can't wash off a tattoo. Do you want to get to be my age with a constant reminder of being an idiot once?" I remember him talking to my best friend, who was thinking about getting a tattoo. Dad started talking about how much he hated potatoes....??... Dad grew up before WWII on a potato farm. "If I got a tattoo saying how much I hated potatoes it would look pretty silly at my current age." Dad had a way of slicing through our youthful exuberance and keeping us on track. All the other Parents knew he was a great guy. Thanks Dad. You've been gone for 16 years, but all 6 of your kids still see everything through your eyes, and all of our friends do too.
You were the Best Dad Ever!! If we did something wrong we were punished, If we did something right we were praised. You were fair and honest. Your wacky sense of humor was off the charts. I sure do miss you.

It can be hard to explain why you're drawn to something.
For me, punk started with hearing the music and being moved by it. Felt like an outlet for a deep anger in me. I started going to shows at 13 (1995) and fell in love with what was going on. Chaotic wildness and fun with a definite underlying sense of care. Punks cared for eachother and wanted to have a safe(ish) place together to go fucking nuts in and shake some demons out or dance around like an idiot, vent some aggression.
Punk rock saved my life by showing me it was ok to have anger, it was ok to let it out, and that I have a family there in the punk scene that loves me.

As soon as I saw "New York hardcore" I immediately rolled my eyes expecting a bunch of violent jock poseurs...but these kids are alright (well, kids then. I'm actually about the same age as they are/were). It's funny to hear Kathie Lee talking shit about their appearance when she looks more ridiculous accidentally, than they did intentionally.

@@usquebaugh1 Yea, it is funny how most of the elements that get remembered as being iconically 80s, like the whole punk look, were actually a pretty rare sight in those days. It was always the most banal elements that were actually popular, but conveniently forgotten. There's a ton of revisionist bullshit in pop culture.
