I'm an academic advisor, and having to tell someone who worked hard and paid a lot for their credits at a for profit school that their credits are not transferrable and basically meaningless is always heartbreaking.

Good morning. I attended GCU, completed my bachelors degree, and I had to pay 150.00 dollars for my degree. Another college I used to attend to, I never had to pay 150.00 upfront for my associates degree. The college I want to attend in my city can take my credits thank goodness for that. It’s really sad that these for-profit colleges aren’t transferable if a particular student wants to attend a college in their own state, and an advisor has to tell that student you can’t attend this college because you’re credits can’t transfer to this college, since you’re college wasn’t an accredited university. Very heartbreaking. I have a neighbor that attended University of Phoenix, and I asked her how are you doing in school? She told me that she stopped going there because they were charging her a lot of money for one class, and she’s in student debt smh 🤦‍♀️. These for-profit colleges don’t care about students and their success, they only care about the money. And I told my neighbor that’s why I’m looking into colleges in my area where I’m going to be well respected as a student and importantly that my degree will be well respected.
A wise person once told me to leave those for-profit colleges alone because:
      You’re degree won’t be respected.
You’re credits won’t transfer to another college.
      You will be in debt
      misleading student
Veterans Education Success has received more than 50 complaints from GCU students, alleging GCU lied about its tuition price, job placement rates and career assistance, students' ability to transfer credits, and delay tactics used to keep students enrolled longer and paying more money

Many community colleges have just as abysmal graduation rates. Individuals, primarily minorities, are funneled into community colleges and drop out, settled with debt though not as much as if they're going to a for-profit college which is more predatory. Not everybody's made for college, regardless of your background, people need to consider other options to earning a good living. Unfortunately, much of society pushes colleges on students.

I taught health science classes for two for-profit colleges. They were both horrible places to matriculate. I left the first to start a grad program, and I left the second because they were misleading students about the marketability of their degrees, and the transferability of their credits. For-profit schools suck. Steer clear.

The community college I attended would test you when you were admitted and yes they take anyone too. But they have remedial classes they put you in first if you don't qualify for college-level work. I had never even taken pre-algebra in school so I had to go back to basics- 3rd-grade math and it was a long road. But I can't imagine skipping that process.

Great video! The more awareness of the situation, the better. The funny thing is that most of these programs offered at for-profit colleges are usually offered at a community college, especially those related to IT or the medical field. I attended Devry University back in 2004 and later Keller Grad, the graduate counterpart in 2008. You need to have a plan if you go to these schools. Luckily for me, I was already working and was able to use those degrees to my advantage in order to career track. Also, I was able to get into another school years later to pursue another degree so most will accept your credits, as long as they are accepted majors/ transferrable credits. I'd recommend watching the documentary on front line called, sub-prime education, it's a good watch. Most of this is true, however I believe both Devry and UOP were regionally accredited, at least when I attended. An old co worker told me about Grand Canyon University back in 2020. So I applied to the university, and just assuming things without doing any research about the school. And I graduated from GCU in December. My major was Behavioral Health Science in Infancy Early Childhood Studies. So I want to attend Lehman college (CUNY) for my masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I'm so afraid that the college won't take my credits. When I spoke to my SSC on Friday about the situation about if my credits would transfer to another college in my city. Therefore, my SSC counselor told me I should continue my education at GCU. I'm thinking to myself as my SSC counselor is telling me this is because so my student loans can be much higher and to be in more debt absolutely not. These for-profit colleges want to get students in the door for their money. Especially when students live in low income neighborhoods. GCU is an accredited institution however the program major itself it's a candidacy meaning it's not a full accredited major program. Now I’m 30k in student loan debt, and I don’t have that type of money especially if I’m only making 20 an hour. However, I’m going to make the best and try to pay off my student loans. It's best not to go to schools such as University of Phoenix, Devry, etc. Those schools aren't scams in the sense that they're fake colleges. They're real colleges, legit colleges, and they're accredited colleges, but they have a bad reputation since they cost more than most colleges, and the education standards at those colleges are lower than most colleges.
At schools such as University of Phoenix, Devry, etc, engineering majors don't take courses that engineering majors have to take at most colleges. At schools such as University of Phoenix, Devry, etc, people take their tests online instead of taking their tests at a testing center where they're being monitored to make sure they're not cheating. At online colleges with good reputations, students typically take their exams at testing centers where they're being monitored to make sure they're not cheating.
There are a lot of financial employers that hire people with accounting, finance, and business administration degrees from University of Phoenix, but a lot of financial employers won't hire people with accounting, finance, and business administration degrees from University of Phoenix. @@CollegeHacked If you can get in and out of there really fast and cheap then it's good if you've got the degree you need for some government requirement. A bachelors degree in anything is needed for many jobs such as becoming a financial advisor or applying to the FBI. The real racket isn't the universities, but the baseless requirements set up by Baby Boomers. Baby Boomers were walking into jobs and getting them with a high school diploma then to cut down on competition they lobbied the government to require a bachelors degree for the job. Delaware was the last state to require a bachelors degree to become an accountant and that was about a decade ago it changed. To be an accountant in the 1960's required a high school education.

I’m going to be in the minority here but the bias against for-profit schools is unjustified. Yes, their graduation rate is below 50 percent… same is true with many top tier universities such as UCLA. Yes they accept just about anyone, but so does the University of Wyoming or any other generic Big State University. Yes, they send students into crippling debt, but Rutgers doesn’t? Yes they spend more on advertising than on education, but is that any different from Texas A&M that spend more money and resources on college football? Yes they don’t give a crap about you education, but neither did my gender confused political science professor at my old community college.
I’ve sat in and audited IT courses at the University of Phoenix before and the subject matter was virtually identical to what every other state university or non-profit was teaching. The prejudice against at for-profit college is just that, prejudice. The hate against for-profit is not warranted IMO.

You make some good points. We might be moving into an era where we need to reevaluate for profits. In the meantime my main complaint is that they generally have much much worse outcomes. Closer to 10-20% graduation which is insane. And they usually cost more than comparable schools. As they figure things out they might become more and more viable. On a philosophical level I also think that making a profit isn’t really a good motive for providing a liberal arts education. But like I said times might be changing.

@@CollegeHacked for sure and I agree with you. To be clear, I’m not an advocate of these for-profit colleges. The grievances you raised are valid and colleges like WGU and Thomas Edison University provide a much better value at a fraction of the cost. I just think we need to be less judgmental of the word “for-profit” because ultimately, all colleges have to make a profit to stay in operation. As an accounting friend of mine once said, “a 501C3 non-profit is a designation in the tax code, not an operating philosophy.”

@@karlstrauss2330 Okay, I am in perfect agreement with that! There are some non-profits I could name that are not operating ethically.

I took a statistics class at college. They give you 2 hours to do 3 questions and it's not open book. If someone is able to do that same class at home on their computer while cheating then it's a joke. You can have proctored exams but that's not the case with every for profit college. Many people need good instructors to help them with hard math classes too.
