  • I know that this door is not locked When practicing lock bypasses, it usually makes ZERO difference whether the is locked or not, or wether it even has a lock installed or not. The practice is for manipulating the latch with your tool.
I shot this video to show how a variety of tools being used in the same manner to show some differences in approach and to show the value of trouble-shooting and how to solve problems with what you've got.

Loiding is always the first attack, and because so many strikes are improperly set will get you in about as fast as a key 1/3 of the time. Don't buy loid sheets from locksmith suppliers; it's free from various plastic items you normally throw away. The 'professional' loid sheets deform quickly as you can see here where it rode across the plunger which is why it's sold only in multiple-sheet packs. Since you're going to ruin it fast, don't waste your money- go DIY. Experience will guide you to what works best. Heavy loid comes from those grocery store discount cards and credit card offers in junk mail as well as used-up gift cards. Lighter loid comes from the large bottles of window cleaner refills; the plastic is harder to resist the ammonia. Also consider the plastic from 'blister pack' products with cardboard backing; my preferred Q-tip brand makes the perfect next-step-down loid. Soda bottles tend to be too thin and too soft but may work (as shown here) if it's all you can get.
The anti-shim plunger is a known barrier to loiding, but a strike plate which is proud from the jamb (that is sitting above the jamb surface) can be equally vexing, as can protruding strike plate screws. If you're certain it not an anti-shim plunger holding you back, use a lighter to gently heat your loid, bending it along one edge at one end about half the radius of a pencil, taperinjg the bend to nothing about an inch (25mm) away. Imagine the depth to the plunger, hold just short of that with the loid perpendicular as you work it down (or up). Once it's slightly on the plunger push in and keep pressure on the loid as you rotate it to your preferred angle. Still holding pressure, slide the loid to an unbent part of the edge and go to work; the latch will then pop right open. Remember this when shrumming as a proud strike or screw can catch you out there too. In fact, one of my cheap security hacks is to go one size large on strike screws to catch and chew up the loid of anyone attempting entrance- they won't get past my properly-set strike anyway but it ruins their loid and frustrates them which is a win in itself.
One last loid hack. Worn and sticky lock plungers can usually be persuaded to retract if you hold constant pressure in the loid, then pull and release the door several times. This wiggles the plunger and helps wedge the loid in tighter. This same technique can also release the anti-shim plunger into the strike hole on newer house doors with the wide soft weatherstripping which almost all of them now have. Also know that commercial metal doors in metal frames usually have the strike distance correct as they're made to more precise standards; still worth trying to loid first as wear and damage can render them equally vulnerable. I've learned all this from a lifetime in the construction trades including bought homes without a key, evictions, as well as installing and repairing all forms of locks short of true safes. Time is money in my business and repairing damage costs time and money too so I've learned how to make things happen fast and easy as well as how to keep unauthorized people out of places they don't belong even if they know what I know. Still learning locksport skills but bypassing is where it's really at. Get your bypassing skills first then go for the rest.

Add a black arrow on a clear piece of plastic so its movement can be discerned by a viewer? Gloriously insightful. Like he teaches this sometimes or something.

Great tips! Will you be doing a video on bypassing the latches that have the spring loaded bar behind the latch?
