- This is an awesome life hack to open a locked door using a credit card or door shims. Faulty locks are a very common problem and can cost a lot of money for a locksmith to come out and open it. This tutorial hack is an amazing way to do it yourself and open the door in seconds. This DIY life hacks method is very important especially when someone is locked on the other side of the door. Just to clarify this is not intended for use on other peoples property without their permission, nor will this allow you to break into a door.

This was a brilliant suggestion. I actually got locked in my bedroom on the second floor, fortunately I could climb down from the balcony onto the garage and then drop off the back of the garage onto the grass. Once I made it around to the other side of the door, it took about 10 minutes and an A4 size plastic folder cover to open the door. A good idea was to put the latch in the middle of the A4 sheet, push one corner in first and then push the whole sheet in. Once I got it in it didn't open immediately, I'm pretty sure because the sheet bent around the latch, but then I decided to push the sheet up and down in the latch and after a while the door popped open.
I was incredibly lucky this happened to my bedroom door because after this I went around the house to check all the doors and found that the downstairs toilet was showing symptoms of the same issue. The symptom to look out for is the door handle shows resistance when trying turn it and/or if it makes a thump noise halfway through the turn. If I couldn’t open the toilet door the only way, I could have escaped would have been for me to use the top of the toilet as a battering ram on the door or wall. For some this could turn into a life-threatening situation, if you get stuck in a room without a phone or any kind of escape it could be the last thing you ever do and idea getting trapped in the toilet and not being able to open the door or call for help scares the living sh*t out of me. I now understand the importance of taking my phone with me when I go to the toilet.
There seems to be a fundamental flaw with this latch, the metal square where the handles go through cracked and then deformed. The one I replaced it with has a plastic square (which is either better or worse). I notice with the new latch the handle only needs to turn half as far to open the door, which seems better.
Champion! A shim made from a strip of thin, flexible but strong clear plastic packaging got me inside the room in 10 mins. You’re a star.

Thanks, managed to get into my bedroom after about an hour of fighting with the door. The mechanism inside broke and the latch was stuck in the locked position. Luckily, shimming my way through using cut up plastic packaging worked! For those struggling with the same problem, the key to opening the door (no pun intended) was relieving the tensions from the latch, by pulling on the door slightly (from the oposite side that the one the door opens towards). Thanks again!

Omg, this just saved us (and our night sleep).
No doorhandles yet, wind blew, door slammed, pretty much nothing but a bed in our room. Used cardboard packaging and it worked. Crazy.

THANK YOU!!!!! The only vid that helped!!! All my cards were inside the locked room but I had a hard-ish plastic paper. The other vids didn’t work cuz the paper was thinner than a card, so every time I tried to push it downward it bent! Jiggling the plastic paper where lock was worked like a charm from the first try!! Thank you thank you thank yoooooooooooooooou 😭 It was too late to call a locksmith and they would have charged us an extra fees and I neeeeeeeeeded to get in the room!!! The credit card worked! I had the correct tool but it didn't work. A laminated driver's license did not work, but a credit card did. It helped to picture the angle like you showed in the video. That was a case where a picture is worth 1000 words. Well done!
This helped me today! Though we didn't have standard door shims handy, tried cutting out pieces from different stuff (like diary covers, phone screen protectors, etc.) with varying thickness. One of them finally worked.

My front door knob was the one that wasn't working, so I was in quite a pickle. I had to crawl out my kitchen window to get to the other side of my door, but I was able to shimmy it open with the card method on account of lacking proper shim-like materials! Thankfully I had a points card I wasn't using anymore as it was damaged a bit ^^;;; thank you for sharing in any case, what a life saver!
Hello i just wanna say on the process of trying to sneak out of my house for new years i got locked in the downstairs bathroom bc the door knob was gone where the door could only be opened from the outside but i cant wake my parents for help bc i was sneaking out . Filled with panic and anxiety i tried calling my sister for helped but shes already out for the new years and my other sister was asleep . However my bf who was waiting outside my house to pick me up sent this video and i tried it w an old card i had in my bag . It WORKED!!!!!! . Saved and out for the new years yay 🎉😉
thank you so much for this video. my granddad locked himself out of his bedroom at 4 in the am . its got no screws on the outside just like the one you pictured. i watched ur video, found a piece of hard plastic (that i just found the day before & was going to throw out, dont know where i had it from, but said no, if i throw it out, ill need it...isnt that weird?!) so i tried the shimming it thru the door liked you showed & a couple of tries & it WORKED!!!!! you dont know the relief for both of us!!! i would have had to call a locksmith, etc..i was going to try to take the hinges off ...the door has been in about 60 yrs or so & the hinge screw looked really hard in so i dont think id be able to remove those. so i taped over the 'inny' & "outy" parts where i got in & hopefully, he wont do that again until i can get new doorknobs WITHOUT locks on it. bathroom too! so thank you thank you thank you!!!!!

Not always that easy if the shim gets stuck at the metal latch plate on the door jamb. I used two shims, one soft cut from a PE bottle and one strong from a piece of 0.4 mm steel sheet. About 3 cm wide and 10 cm long. I used the hard shim to get the soft shim past the obstacle while wiggling the door back and forth. It finally worked after a few minutes.

This shit actually worked. I used a card a bit thinner than a credit card, so it slid in easier. But I got my front door open in a few seconds after forgetting my keys in the house.

I had an extremely stubborn door. I had to put force against the door so the top part would give a bit, then use that space to jam a gift card I had, then force slide it down towards the catch. With enough tugging, it opened the latch. Had to use some pliers to help with sliding it down tho. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR VIDEO!!!

Thank you for this - very insightful. I have come across a bit of an issue in that the door I need to "unstick" has the rounded lock mechanism the other way around. In other words, I am trying to shimmy open faced with the flat edge - not the rounded edge. Is there any way to get around this? Thanks!
