How to Get into Your House with a Credit Card If You’re Locked Out

Only do this on your own lock -or you could wind up in a lot of trouble.
Step 1: Check the lock
Check the lock. A credit card will only open a spring bolt--the kind of lock that comes with a standard doorknob. It won’t work on a deadbolt.
Step 2: Choose a card
Choose a card. If you have a plastic card that’s less valuable than a credit card, like a video membership card, try that first.
Tip
Laminated cards work best, because they tend to be flexible.
Step 3: Insert card
Wedge the card between the door and the frame where the doorknob’s latch is located.
Tip
Many doors have molding that will make this difficult; if you’re desperate to enter, you can pry it off--but keep in mind this may cause more damage than the cost of a locksmith.
Step 4: Wiggle and jiggle
Holding the card flush against the doorframe, begin pushing and wiggling it towards the latch in the door crack.
Tip
If the sloped side of the latch isn’t facing you, you will need a tool or long piece of plastic that you can hook around the other side and pull towards you, making this much more difficult.
Step 5: Push and bend
While pushing the card in, begin bending it away from the doorknob. When you feel it slide the latch back, the door should open.
Step 6: Call a locksmith
If you got into your home, don’t be so smug--it means you have a crappy lock. Call a locksmith and get a deadbolt.

Actually, I’m grateful this was posted for three reasons; Getting in when I was locked out; understanding just how easily it would be breaking in; and always use the deadbolt!

I completely lost mine at school, so I had to climb through my window. It's a good thing I'm small enough to fit through my window and for once, having a 23 inch waist comes to my advantage (since my window doesn't open very far). I had to remove the window screen and open the burglar bars first, but I was eventually able to climb on top of my backpack and jump up before swinging my legs onto my bed.
Thank God for this video! Got home late last night, no key, too exhausted to drive back the two hours to get them, and the dogs desperately had to go to the bathroom, lol. I was able to break into our back door way too easily; We're definitely going to have to install a dead bolt!

Thank you SO much! The locksmith quoted my friend $120 to open her front door. CZcams got me in for free in less than 3 minutes! Time to get the locks changed though lol

@ 1:15 I used a long wire, worked well because I didn’t have to work so hard to fish it though the other side to create a loop to pull it. Worked on first try. Pull the door knob towards you the moment you pull on the wire toward you. String will not work too thin.
This!!! Locked out, I live a mile into the woods, no car keys. (Last time I didn’t even have my phone lol). My car was super messy so I thought ! This is the time for the mess to save me. There has to be an object in here. Then your comment! I put tennis string in there the other night and bam. At 1:19 you can see a small secondary sliding pin. If your door closes properly this pin will be depressed not allowing this method to work. If it was installed incorrectly and this pin is not depressed this is an easy entry. Unfortunately for me and probably others they will have to seek another method. However, this is still useful to some and worth the effort.
Step 6: If you get into your house, don’t be so smug.

Card swipe door locks! When I took the card system, was satisfied
I just used this on a stuck latch (can turn the knob but latch would budge). The door is unlocked but the stinking latch was broken somehow. Inserted a credit card almost halfway and kicked the door open. Thanks for the tip.

Many rental houses have these type of locks. Most landlords don't care, unless you force the issue on them. Then you may still have to do it yourself.
My daughters house was broken into this way. I didn't realize it until it was too late. The door didn't shut tightly enough for the pin to stay depressed. She now has a deadbolt.

Use the card to pay the locksmith you're probably going to have to call
Unfortunately, most latches have that special pin that prevent this from occurring. This video could not have happened since the latch they showed us has that pin. The pin of which I speak is the little part in the middle on the flat edge of the latch (where the straight line of the letter 'D' is). Then the door is closed, the latch extends, but the pin remains depressed. Go ahead and open your door; try to depress the latch with the pin already depressed; vote down this video. You're welcome.
