Fisherman Use Coolers to Stay Afloat After Boat Sinks

- A group of fisherman had big plans to participate in a fishing tournament. But in the middle of their excursion, their boat sank 30 miles off the coast of Dauphin Island, Alabama. They spent four and a half hours trying to stay alive in the water praying to be rescued. The coast guard finally found the group. "We all cried," Easton Barrett tells Inside Edition. "We knew that we were going home to see our loved ones again."
Their wives said “do you really need THAT many coolers of beer?!?!” Who’s laughing now!!
They use those for the fish lol

I couldn’t help thinking of sharks the entire time.
ayooo me tooo!!!! Not even the thought of drowning whatsoever....just sharks attacking nibbling on my legs first all throughout my body lol sorry for the details but damnnn....this is an amazing story
No sharks were harmed.
His boat may have sank, but at least he still has one hell of a mustache
Reminds me of Tom Selleck mustache
😂😂😂
😂
he used it as a raft
In the end, cooler heads had prevailed
What a great pun. 😂
😎
lol
Late friend of mine was commanding officer coast guard station fort myers beach. He said always carry orange inflatable swimming pool rafts on your boat. It keeps you dry and the coast guard is looking for orange. So glad those men made it back safe. US Coast Guard rocks!
This is great info
Lucky that the coast guard found them
Only because they had the ACR emergency beacon device that sent the signal to the Coast Guard, otherwise they wouldn't have been reported missing until the next day and been in the water all night. The call to the relative just confirmed to the CG that they had gone out on the water.
...and the cooler made it more visible to spot them
Lucky they were smart enough the spend $250 bucks on an emergency beacon and wore life jackets.. $250 isnt much when people spend 25k on a a small boat
Good for these guys that they didn't just let this end with the happy ending. People don't take their safety seriously especially while outside doing things they've done a long time.
We had three fisherman go through the same incident a week ago, their boat went down off the coast of Gisborne NZ. Unfortunately they were not so lucky. After a 40 hour battle of treading water in rough, stormy seas they all lost their lives. Three, young dads who were beloved members of their community. It has been a devastating loss their families, the whole town is in mourning. I think having a personal locator on board might have saved their lives. This is a great story and lesson for recreational fisher people around the world. Doing safety checks and rehearsals with everyone on board should be mandatory. Be prepared and have the correct safety gear at all times. Glad you all survived! Thank you for sharing.
This is why I hate being on a boat
Man I hate it when it boat
good stay in ur house and curl up
@@CNDcovertyup. you go out there and take risks for us ok?
The same risk as plane as well
😅 more likely to have a car accident
Thank God the young man’s wife handed him the Personal Locator! She saved all of them that day. 🙏🏻❤
But one guy just said he gave all credits to coast guard 😮
@@jenniebjestp wow. Well I guess they do get the credits too. 🥰
It was the wife of one of the men on board that gave them her personal locator and told them to use it if they were to get into any trouble.
I guess tracking your husband works
@@VictorPerez-kc4ic husbands do it too. LOL
It was his girlfriend
They forgot the plug
That’s what I thought !
if you know you know lol we don't know what happen lmfaoo
If they forgot the plug it would have sunk much sooner. They wouldn’t have gotten that far in the ocean
@@Canadian_Kx_Adventures We forgot our Jet Ski plug once… or twice. I know there’s a difference between jet ski and boat but we didn’t realize the plug wasn’t in until we realized the jet ski was riding too low and we had a puddle at our feet after about 1-2 hours. I’d imagine in 3-5 ft waves it would be hard to notice if the boat was riding low or if it was just waves.
That’s the first thing I thought
They know how it sank 😅
Lucky there was no sharks around glad they safe.
Forgot to put the plug in no doubt!
@@jonmacdonald5345 I thought about that, but I don't think they would have lasted 4 hours in the ocean without the plug in.
Did the guy on the left say the life vests stopped working?
"the life jackets were great, but they only lasted for so long"
Who sells life jackets that stop working?
I wondered the same thing. Plus, you should have your life jacket on all the time .
Life jackets only last for a short time. They eventually get saturated and stop working.
@@SunWM99100%, this is why they make life rafts
Tons of great advice in this video. Great job Coast Guards.
They don’t know what caused the boat to sink... Sounds like a fish story if I ever heard one.
Too embarrassed to admit they forgot the plug….
Nah a boat like that has a auto bilge. Would of definitely removed water quicker then water coming in
@@richiecasella8727yep until it quits 4 hrs later
@@richiecasella8727unlessss it was not functioning
I don't think they'd be able to go 4 hours without a plug though, right?

I was in a boat that someone forgot to put the plug in and almost ended up sunk in the middle of a Florida swamp during alligator mating season at 4am 😬 So my experience was a lot like they described “everything was fine, until it wasn’t” the boat I was on was ok until we slowed down & I noticed the water seemed higher up on the side of the boat and the engine was really low in the water, no water inside the boat that we could see but when I knew something wasn’t right and opened the compartment/live well thing & it was filled to the brim. Luckily in my case we kicked it into high gear, got the boat back up on plane, got the bilge pump on got back to the boat ramp in time but it was pretty scary. Especially seeing all those glowing eyes shining everywhere and the GRRP GRRP noises. Women tent to worry a lot but sometimes that intuition comes in handy, so glade that dudes gf sent him out with a plb- every boat going off shore should have at least one on board.
Lmao that's a little scary not gonna lie
That's a little scary
These guys looked like the boat went under and they said"Whelp, we got the beer" 😂
Loved one was thinking about them at just the right moment. The mom may not have answered the Coast Guard call. I'm very glad that the fishermen survived. A+ Coast Guard! And A+ to the captain for the safety review the night before.
Certainly a good story to tell the little ones. And certainly one heck of an advertisement for whatever company made the coolers.
So glad your all ok!! Thanks for sharing!!
They never double checked the drain plugs on the back of the boat which is were the water came in and why it did not sink right away.
Do you really think experienced open sea fishermen & captain who were safety conscious enough to revere safety review would be cavalier about the boat operation itself?
@@jimsedlock7637 People forget and leave their kids in hot cars, so, yeah.
Good call if the plug was forgotten the boat would have taken in water as they were heading out the channel and would have started to fill the haul which would not have been visible to them just yet but then as they would have accelerated to their fishing designation the water would have emptied out mostly because of the pitch of the boat upright and the speed of the boat would drain it. But then lo and behold once they started fishing it began to fill up again and by the time they realized it was obviously too late.
@@spinflux You want to compare distracted parents going somewhere without checking vehicle readiness or special safety equipment with dedicated fishermen going out into a dangerous environment? Do you think they didn't notice a change in the boat's handling until the last 45 seconds?
@@jimsedlock7637 They said they didn’t notice a change in the boat until 45 seconds before it sank. They said exactly that.
The team prepared for a tournament never visualizing the unseen torment. Great instincts and teamwork to the captain and crew who live to fish another day.
Wow! Thank God those guys were saved.
These guys remind me of my friends from High School. Thank god they made it home to their loved ones!
Selfless effort of ensuring that people get food. They really need our support
Why does this sound like a case of the plug coming loose?

Nice outcome .great advice..
That mustache kept them all alive
"How did ya"......look, Outdoorsman just have that instinct. It's natural. That's how. ❤
This would be officially my last fishing trip ever 😂. Glad you made it fellas….smart to prepare for the worst the night before. Really smart to keep the debris together and standing up that cooler. The wife making them take the EPRB too. Thanks to the USCG too!
Now thats true journalism. She eas so intense and questions riviting. Looks like she was enjoying every minute, sitting on the toilet
sounds like someone forget the drain plug
This happened a month ago.
So happy that they were saved!
If everybody saying it's the plug how come that damn thing don't have an alarm if it's not in
You don't have an alarm for the plug missing.
Don't forget the electrical battery so the sharks don't eat you.
Incredible story. It's awesome that they survived. They used their heads and prevailed in a life-threatening situation. Wtg guys 👍👍👍
Happy your all safe
Good job guys
why aren’t drones part of EVERY rescue crew?
I always pack my tackle in a coolerbox when going on a boat... I'd hate to lose that collection more than a boat.
ALL THE MEN IN MY FAMILY WORKS IN THE OCEAN I DONT
SEEING THIS MAKES ME NOT REGRET IT.

This is an amazing story. The Lord was watching over yall that day and what a wonderful testimony this is. Thank yall for sharing and keep on fishing. God bless yall.
What did he mean by the life jackets can only last so long? Like what, they just stop working?

That's smart! REALLY BRILLIANT!
Life jackets and the emergency gps beacon in one of the guys hands is what saved them.
They kept the coolers close by because they had fresh water and snacks which they didnt need because they had the $250 gps
$30,000 boat for a ten dollar fish.
How do you forget the plug
Don't bother the fish or you become the fish
smart thinking

good info. u never know when tragedy strikes
Dang that is crazy the boat sank in 45 seconds.
45 Seconds. Were you being funny or ironic?
Why wasnt there a whistle attached to the life jackets?

they were lucky to be found even with the proper gear. the ocean is no joke...

Is it just me or the answers they’re providing doesn’t have even just a minor details on how it happened . I wonder it’s part of possible insurance claim . I’m glad they made it out alive but just wondering what could’ve caused such incident.
Does the ice maker still work?
That’s crazy that no sharks bother them in that time

The EPIRB they had is far better… iPhone is not as helpful as one might think. Lacks some of the critical function, the EPIRB has.
that dudes neck is super long you know his head was staying above water
It’s terrifying. I was on a boat that capsized. It started taking on water because the bilge pump failed. I can’t swim so it made it extra scary. My boyfriend just finished putting on my life jacket when a huge gush of water came over our heads and knocked me into the passenger seat and the boat flipped over. We were under the boat and somehow my bf found my legs and pushed me up. The bottom of the boat was now the roof and the others with us pulled me up and we sat on top and I almost got knocked off by a huge wave more than once. We were freezing. He was able to contact the Coast Guard to give them our coordinates before total disaster struck. They never showed up and there were no other boats in sight. We were out there for what felt like an eternity until out of nowhere another boat appeared and rescued us. Those two guys saved all of our lives. They took us to the closest Coast Guard station. I was in shock and suffered a bad concussion but luckily that was all. I really thought I was going to die. My Angels were watching over me that day.
Great story with the best ending!! God is good
Dude got that Ron Burgundy mustache...
scary waters
That’s why you should check boats before you sail,I’m sure the boat bypassed safety regulations because something caused boat to sink
Probably forgot to put the plug in
This advice will help save lives, if people thought it could happen to them, and it can. Better safe than sorry.
I’m happy this ended the way it did, because it could have went horribly wrong. Thank God, that you ALL made it back to safety.
Yeah, if they actually admitted why it sank... Boats don't just sink. Give us the real reason so other people can be watching out for that thing.
Oh they know why it sank, it’s called one too many Coors😂
Forgot the plug
drain plugs were not put back on
Something smells fishy🤔
