I've owned both an Altima and a Maxima and lemme say, if you can afford it, go with the Maxima. The Altima is a car you use, the Maxima is a car you love. I have an Altima now because of the higher mpg but my issue is the mpg isn't high enough to satisfy the power loss. Maxima averaged almost 30 mpg, Altima averages almost 33 mpg and I'd much rather have the extra umph of the V6 for that gas cost.

This is like comparing the F22 Raptor to the F35 Lightning 2. It’s night and day. Only reason you pick the Altima is cause you can’t afford the Maxima. If you can afford both no way you go small. Depends on what you want out of your car, but I'll say this (since I had both cars; '07 Altima SE with 170K miles, now a "16 Maxima SV with 134K miles). I also happen to be a Mechanical Engineer, but you don't need to be one to figure this out:
Altima=flimsy (even with the 3.5; it was fast, but not premium-feeling; thinner/lighter-weight components used, esp. in the suspension). I wanted quick and cheap, and that's what I got. But I loved it, and it served its purpose.
Maxima-=solid and premium (the way it floats over the road and its bumps with authority); this car pulls like a train; seems faster than the Altima even though they had the same engine (comparing those 2 years). Commands respect on the road. One of the best cars I've had (I'm 56 yrs old, BTW).

Excellent gas milage is also a huge plus. I also have the Maxima 2023 SR. Sorry, NO comparison, best car I've ever owned, it's fast, hugs the road well, because of it's weight, and quite luxurious! I totally disagree about the Altima being the better car. AWD is nothing special. It doesn’t give you better safety, scientifically it only helps when moving forward from a stop, but good snow tires can help you do that in a FWD car.
Also, since Nissan is discontinuing the Max, it’s been not given any good updates since it’s debut in 2016 except for adding the pano roof to the SR package and sone other minor additions.
The Maxima is a legacy, a staple of Nissan’s North American heritage, and a vehicle that Nissan enthusiasts will miss terribly. Despite its inconsistent CVT, the majority of the Maxima hallmarks are solid.
Personally, if Nissan switched from their subsidiary Jaco who builds their CVTs to using the new 9-speed ZF transmission now launched in the Pathfinder, I think Maxima could have made it even longer challenging the Lexus ES, Toyota Camry, and prob the V6 Dodge Charger.
Having owned a 2017 Maxima SR and migrated to the Lexus ES, I miss the sporty car experience and thrill of the ride. Now I feel like an old man driving a dad car with zero thrill just a soft boring yet reliable vehicle.
I still miss the Max and occasionally find myself drawn to these videos replaying the fun I had just a few years ago!

Awd increases gas mileage and the 4cy lwill have you over revving it to catch up with traffic eliminating any savings. Trust me, my last car was a 4cyl. Honda Accord. My new Maxima 300 hp matted with its gas saving CVT gives me the same gas mileage. This isn’t rocket science, imagine a 4cyl over revving to keep up, then imagine a 300 HP V6 with lower revs going about its business.

@@carsunlockedI have had 8 Nissans since 1994 with my last being a 2013, I have had 3 Subaru cars and when my lease ends I will probably get a 4th. I didn't dislike any of my Nissan's except a 2006 Altima and a 2008 Rogue, both were bought used from a Nissan dealer, I loved my 2002 Xterra but it's my local dealer and the way they do business that made me look elsewhere. I enjoyed my 2016 Crosstrek but it's lack of power made me get an Outback it had good power but was too big for my liking so I got a 2021 Crosstrek, and now they offer a more powerful Crosstrek and that might be my next car. Subaru has the best AWD and I live in a 4 seasons state so I like AWD.

The newer Altima’s change from the older model and that’s what I like. If I were to purchase something I would get something different and plus the maxima is overrated. It fills like nissan knows it srcewed up by cutting this car , so they are trying to turn this Altima into a Maxima , and i am telling you , in the long run it is not going work. So lets get better head lights and tail. Lets get a dual moonroof. Interior we need ambient lights, ventilation seats, and a better screen as well as the ac controls. Finally under the hood. Lets get 350 hp on the Altima!!!! Awd i promise you guys this car would be amazing. But im going to trade my altima for the arteon
