Produced for Chevrolet by the Jam Handy Organization, this film "American Maker" features the notable voice over actor Marvin Miller. Similar to the structure of other Jam Handy films, this snap shot of midcentury America wanders through various portions of industry before leaning into car production. It includes dramatic reenactments of Eli Whitney’s innovations in mass production. It is a heavily patriotic film that focuses on American consumerism as viewed through the Chevrolet lens. It opens up with a young boy building sand castles along the shore line (1:11). This is used as an example of the mind's early desire to build and construct. A sailboat is erected in a clear glass bottle (1:26). A crane carts a large wooden box in a shipping yard (2:10). A space shuttle shoots up (2:20). Kids build their own NASA rockets in the yard (2:32). A housewife tidies her kitchen (3:08). She pinches a pie crust together (3:37). The narrator explains the American consumer mindset (4:18). A seamstress hens a dress (4:34). A craftsman paints a tea kettle (4:52). Female workers on an assembly line build rotary telephones (5:03). Dolls float down an assembly line (5:55). Brass horns are snapped together (6:47). Two car manufacturers look at scale models of new vehicle ideas (8:13). A beach bathing couple watch a battery powered transistorized television (8:34). Early American industry is looked to (9:18). A woman operates the spinning wheel and loom (9:24). Eli Whitney's innovations in mass production began with a contract from congress to produce 10,000 muskets (10:52). He promoted the idea of interchangeability (13:22); a basic principal of mass production. Modern industry workers appear in montage, operating modern machinery (15:21). This leads into the automotive industry. Welders seam together a car frame (16:01). Assembly line workers pieces together parts for an engine (16:12). The expansion of Eli Whitney’s ideas are noted; Marvin explains (16:30) parts are sourced from various companies. A 1960 Chevrolet Bel Air Impala appears nearly complete (17:03). Candy coated steering wheels hang on a wall (17:14). An engine is set onto a frame (17:29). A Chassis is drawn down the line (17:43). A red Chevrolet Impala body (17:56) moves down the line in a nearby body plant. The body is lowered into the frame as viewed from above (18:10). Fresh layers of paint are steamed on (18:43). Headlights are stuck in (18:58). Marvin speaks on the mindset of the industry worker (19:28). A completed soft top candy apple red Impala drives up (20:11). A honey bee yellow 1961 Chevrolet truck model C-5309 Stake Truck Model (20:43) gets a hood check. Innovations in car manufacturing (21:07) are looked to. Inspection stickers are stuck on (21:34). The dealer (21:41) inspects the Chevrolet Biscayne Fleet Master (21:49). A clock shop (22:07) and a television set (22:11) dealer too inspect new product. The American consumer is now looked to; including the American home and their expectations (23:10). Coffee is poured out in a prim garden (23:42). The film wraps up on the sandy shoreline (24:28) and the credit screen (24:45).
This short film was such a success that it actually showed as a short before Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" in the Detroit area.

This was a marketing tool absolutely make believe, cars that whore out after a few years, woman's jobs that paid absolutely nothing, and look not one minority to be seen anywhere, if you had a heart condition it was a death sentence, oh yeah the good old days, WTH are you smoking if you really believe this BS

Mdlclass Worker Fact 1) any one of these vehicles especially the Chevy would reach 150000 miles with proper maintenance. Women’s jobs were paid on par with their level of production. A male realtor who sold a 80k house received the exact $ that a female realtor would. Female law enforcement/ fire EMS received position based pay. They didn’t care if it was male or female. Heart conditions, the FDA mislead many not as much as they do now. Techniques in COPD and “heart disease “ care have progressed significantly since those days..
Fact 3) you didn’t live in this time and you have an inherent despise for America’s success. It would be a good time for you to abandon your leftist ideology and push yourself into a paradigm of self worth and achievement on a personal bases. Now more than evah, Love America or leave it. For your own personal good.

Look how trim almost everybody is. A couple of the ADs while this was playing were for foreign cars, adding insult to injury. I remember when "Made in USA" was all my Dad would buy. I try, but its almost impossible today. Although nobody will listen to me, my thoughts are, if we would not allow foreign products into this country unless the manufacturer met the same clean air, water and waste requirements forced on US manufacturers, then they would not be so cheap.

Made in 1960. We have had TVs that "hang on the wall like a picture" since about 2004, 44 years later, and they are working on self driving cars, 60 years later. The TV at the beach, I dont know why you would go to the beach and watch TV, but I did have a battery powered set in the 80s. Of course for maybe the last 10 we all have a TV in our pocket......but its all made in other countries....
