  • Seems to be a common problem from this power plant so I decided to make a video to show my experience of it.
I spent quite a bit of time hanging off a lever to get the pinion to come forward without any luck. I fear if I went any further I’d have broken something so I took it to the experts.
I’d hoped to have made a video that would show you the full process but this will have to do.
    Enjoy.

I only wanted to see how you got to the two bolts holding the starter motor and you bypassed that part completely which is the hardest part of the whole job. Not sure why you missed that out.

Thanks a million for the two long and tin bolts trick ! you were very lucky the 2 big bolts didn't break upon removal because they notoriously do. I am very afraid of breaking them and have the motor out of the boat just for replacing my starter

When I watched you jump the starter I was confused if you can jump it then it works. Mine only clicked turning on key I jumped it it worked no problem. Traced wire to a relay switch jumped it it worked so I'm going with starter relay switch first.

Could you share the part number of the replacement starter that you tried to order on ebay. I took mine out and it has 9 pinion teeth but all of the replacement starters that I've found have 11 pinion teeth.
    I have a Mercruiser 135HP 3.0L alpha gen one 1999 in a Sea Ray BR 180.

Excellent video. I have a similar issue with my starter motor I think. There is only one bolt in mine, which causes the starter motor to move about a lot, do you know what the part number is for these bolts?

@@hamzamohammed6522 Do you mean the bolt numbers? I ended up just getting a new long bolt and using nutlock to keep it in place. Worked fine.

What size socket or box wrench? I tried a 1/2" it seemed to small and a 8/16 too big and 14mm seemed a little big

This is exactly what I've been looking for, I've got an issue where - on turning the key - the relay just "clicks", & after 10-15 tries the starter will turn, but it's very slow & "laboured". The battery is good, 12.9V & 120CCA. Unsure how to check if the relay is shot, I have a meter, guess I'm just looking for 12v at the relay? or is the amperage also important?

Hi Neil. Sorry! I don’t check here often. I’d check my battery health first and foremost. A battery shop can do this for you with a carbon pile tester. It’s the most accurate test in my opinion. Check your connections and your earths before looking at your starter. It will be difficult to test your current whilst starting but a good test is to check battery voltage on cranking the engine with your starter. It should drop to around 9-10V If my memory serves correct.

@@alexfay1121 No probs, I did a voltage-drop test from the Battery all the way through, all good to the starter & back on the earth - in the end I pulled the starter out, broke it apart & several of the bushes had worn so completely that the springs were just abrading against the motor armature, (except one) hence the intermittent nature of the fault. The relay was also shot (black, burned buildup on the copper plug within, but looked good from the outside - worth checking, if you're reading this ppl) so replaced both, now all good. Thx for the content, very handy channel, & has saved me a fortune!!

I just did this, not easy at all! Used an open end wrench, I think the bottom bolt was 1/2 but one of mine was 9/16. Lots of small turning…

I had to put rachet into a pipe about 24" long
and tape it so it couldn't move to get to the back bolt @@MattBrauning
