    Funny how abstract art was first created as a way to reach as many people as possible. The "first" abstract painters (Kandinsky, Mondrian, Malevitch...) were trying to get rid of any cultural references, so they used shapes and colors instead to create what would be as universal as possible, because who doesn't understand shapes and colors?
    So you could say that by trying to simplify art they made it harder to understand, pretty ironic ain't it

    As someone with a degree in illustration, modern art is more about the concept/narrative behind the piece and the artist behind it. Saying that I spend about at least 8-10hrs on one peace so for someone to come along and spend 5 minutes on it and sell it for billions kind of grinds on me a bit 😂
    When I was back in college/school we went to the Tate and they had these people walking about in the big downstairs exhibition space. They were performers but would walk around, come up and talk gibberish to you then carry on as if nothing happened. Art is bonkers haha

    Modern art is all about creating confusion. The fact that it's abstract makes it difficult for people to identify and therefore difficult to quantify. Arts salespeople have been using this to drive the prices up. A huge price tag for a banana, for instance, will create a sense of insecurity in people who fail to understand what makes that Banana special. Some rich people will act on that insecurity and end up buying the Banana, or in other words, the ticket to an elite club where they're hoping to feel secure. To jack up the prices even higher, the art world relies on packaging. They will build a narrative and a sentiment around certain pieces and create an illusion of exclusivity that will attract insecure big spenders. It's all evil really.

    • @sashoradoulov3504
      @sashoradoulov3504 Před 4 lety +23

      Not really evil, kind of genius. And the only people rich enough and willing to buy modern art probably deserve what they get if they're that insecure.

      After reading your post and thinking about it, I think maybe it's a reflection of what people value. I think it's kind of worrying that we value confusion, simplicity, lack of direction, at the same level or more than intricate or beautiful pieces of art that were someone's life's work. There's also the concept of the artist's fame making a piece valuable. When that happens I feel like they're just selling their autograph, if the piece isn't intricate or skillful. So I guess my opinion is that art being successful is a reflection of what we value, and I'm implying that it's slightly worrying that we value signatures or dumb squiggles, more than an intricate showcase of skill.

      My guess would be, that other artists in there are paying somehow to get their installations into the gallery. Or maybe just because it is about principles - if you start letting just anybody in there and do whatever they want, you could get in some trouble down the line. Or the pieces in there are being carefully selected and it is just not perceived gladly, that somebody just turns the selection process useless by just setting up camp without even the slightest notification beforehand.

    0:43 fun fact: a lot of the art you see in museums are not actually worth as much as they claim to be. A lot of wealthy people will commission an artist to paint or create some kind of art for them. Then they hire an appraiser to appraise the artwork they commissioned from the artist for a large amount of money. They then donate this art that is supposedly really expensive to a museum for a tax write-off. Almost every single time, the artist is being paid very little so they do not try hard to make this art mean anything. This is why it's pretty funny when you see someone stare at these simple looking arts for a really long time trying to figure out the deeper meaning behind it because there really is no meaning

    For the Stuck inside show, could you make it a weekly occurrence? It would be a shame to not see them again. I reckon it didn't do as well as it should have because each episode was short. The episode were funny and creative, but i know i would have preferred to watch the videos all together in a 10-15min episode. Hope you're keeping sane in lockdown!

    Oh my.. you managed to epitomise the essence of "Art" in every second of this video ! I wish I had a time-machine to take this video back with me for when I was at Art College over 20 years ago..
    You did it all..you researched and asked yourself the question "What is Art" (the dark subject that all in art college must debate for hours... and hours.. and hours... and hours (and hours and hours) on end.. with no definitive answer (sorry Wikipedia, you can be debunked by many)
    And you came up with something that "meant" something, something on multi-levels, made me think , I loved it ! Even your concept of taking the p**s but genuinely creating something that others would be interested in and take photos..
    ...even something that made me think, I thought you could have had a mumbled conversation with each other through your NanaPhones? too, when you said you couldn't stop laughing that idea just sprung to mind..
    I got little marks for my "Contextual Studies theory assignment", after researching Art right from the beginning, cave paintings and ancient scripts and drawings, right through to the modern world, and my conclusion was , Art is human form of communication and what you want it to be (my tutor didn't like that, LOL)
    I still stand by that today, and this video and your subsequent piece at the Tate reaffirms my thoughts and feelings on the matter !
    Haha you guys are brilliant...
