It also goes a lot deeper than this. The Spanish team were already deeply unhappy with their coach and wanted him removed but the Spanish football federation refused. Rubiales has now offered the coach a 3 year contract even amidst his controversy. This isn’t an issue with just one guy, it’s the whole management.
And it’s so stupid of the man. He could have just stayed low profile and said “look I told you this coach was good you won a World Cup with them” but instead bro caused more controversy and everyone wants him gone

I hate this take, nothing happens behind closed doors, this isn’t some domestic abuse case or something like that, stop speculating about that shit. She came out about the kiss, do you really think she wouldn’t come out about more if he’s already being suspended and knows she has the full team and most of the world supporting her? Still, it’s obvious he didn’t mean it in a malicious way he was just overly friendly (kissing on the cheek is a common greeting in Spain) but he took it too far with the kiss on the lips. In reality it’s not that big of a deal, he should have just apologised immediately and moved on, but instead he doubled down and this blew up into a massive drama.
It’s the fact that they won the World Cup as to why he did it, because he was so excited and so proud, from his reaction to all of them, he seems to take an almost parental role to them (he is probably old enough to be their dad) and you can see how overjoyed he is at them winning, the ‘worst’ that probably goes on ‘behind closed doors’ is probably no worse than this and just more hugging and kissing on the cheek if they win something.
for some additional context: 15 spanish players walked out on the team recently after luis rubiales' federation made their private concerns public. the players were unhappy with the coach, jorge vilda. his training sessions, his injury recovery practices, the nutritionists on his team, even the transportation provided to the players, all of it was completely inadequate. instead of addressing these concerns, the federation publicly labelled these players as traitors. 3 of the 15 were in the world cup, and huge names like mapi leon stayed home. jorge vilda was applauding rubiales enthusiastically during his unhinged speech, and rubiales promised him a 400k promotion on stage. thankfully that 15 is now 81 signatures and rising. rubiales and vilda are surely gone, and hopefully the spanish women can continue to thrive as they are destined to. a fantastic squad filled with some of the best players in the world.

As someone who lived in Spain for a few years, kissing people on the cheek is very common and would not seem strange to most spaniards. That being said, kissing on the lips is a totally different thing. I can't imagine being in Jenni's position and she deserves to feel safe in her work environment. Sad time for Spain sports.
I watched almost every game of the women’s world cup. Many of Spain’s players chose not to play at all this year in protest of their management, including guys like him. They’ve protesting for over a year I believe. I definitely wondered about the consequences of all these players sitting out this major tournament, and then the squad who kept playing going on to win for the first time. It sure felt like things wouldn’t change after that. Really unfortunate situation.
Protesting players wanted more professionalism and “also complained about the behaviour of certain coaches. They said they were asked to keep the doors of their rooms open before midnight in hotels where they were based, made to tell coaches where and with whom they were going if they went out for a walk and forced to show the contents of their bags if they bought something during a training camp. Those are behaviours the RFEF was aware of, but which they say changed after Luis Rubiales took over as president in 2018.” There were other issues too, not all of them were controlling. Of the 15 players originally protesting - 3 returned, 5 were not selected and 7 still refuse to play for Spain under current leadership.

I'm Australian and a huge football fan so I was at the stadium watching this. I remember at the time mentioning to my friend that it was weird that this dude was picking ppl up and overall being handsy. Then the kiss happened and I was like "who tf is this dude, that's weirdo behaviour" but we thought that suuurely she must have been okay with it since it happened in international tv and he was like literally next to the Spanish queen, right? RIGHT? Nah, he's just a creep.
Also as an aside comment, not sure if ppl saw this on tv, but the Spanish coach (who is also a terrible person) got boo'd every time he was on the stadium screens to the point they stopped showing him lmao which was so deserved.

I watched this live with my mom who lived in Spain for a few years. When it happened I mentioned that he was acting weird with all of them. My mom dismissed it as part of the culture and I just thought, “then their culture is sexist”. My mom can’t believe it turned into such a big deal and even seems upset that she was wrong.. a lot of people aren’t going to like that they were wrong for thinking this was ok.

im from spain and what is part of "the culture" is to give kisses on the cheek sometimes as a greeting or to say goodbye, although still some people dont like it (one of the reasons for that being that oftentimes its expected of women but not of men) so they dont do it... but also the fact that something is part of a culture does not put it above scrutiny. either way, his actions clearly crossed the line and it's certainly not "Spanish culture" to give kisses without consent, especially not on the mouth and like he did. hes disgusting and im happy to see how much backlash he is getting, im not a big football person but looking into the matter he does not have a good track record

not many people talk about the part where before the world cup a lot of players in the team tried to get him out of the team as they didnt like how he made them feel and many things but the federation decided to keep him and they removed some players, making a new team which eventually won the cup but again it sucks he makes the headlines and the women are not the main news after the huge win

An absurd part of this is when he first 'apologised', they falsified a statement by Jenni Hermoso saying that it wasn't a problem at all and she was grateful for what he did for Spanish football. That's why she put out an official statement through her own social media. Hey Lud, just letting you know that there’s also a lot of history with the spanish federation before this. Before the world cup, over half the team had refused to play at the world cup because the Spanish manager was emotionally abusive (and possibly more). There’s been a lot of shady stuff going on for years. Eventually, all but 3 players came back, but I was at a lot of the games in Sydney and there was clear tension between the players and managers. They never interacted with each other, even when they won.
So happy for the players, but so devastated for them at the same time.

Its a shame that this is overshadowing the fantastic work the ladies team did on the pitch to make Spain onky the second nation alongside Germany to win both the mens and womens world cup. And the sad thing is that Rubiales has had scandal after scandal during his reign as the Spanish FA president but he always doubles down but thankfully this time it looks like this was the incident that finally had him reprimanded. But be more careful about how you use phrases like "sexual assault", you're running the risk of either watering down the term so people don't take it seriously and/or lowering the bar such that very minor offenses carry very high penalties socially and legally.

Excellent video Lud! If you look into the issues with the Spanish FA even before the world cup would add even more context to the B.S that is the Spanish FA and how they've dealt with their women's national team.
Basically, some of the players all hated the manager and refused to play, the Spanish fa said they wouldn't remove the manager. So the players caved and came back. But it just outlines more scumbaggery on their part before this happened.

I normally don't comment but the craziest thing about this situation is that immediately after the initial allegations the Spanish football body published an OFFICIAL STATEMENT TO THE PRESS where Jenni Hermoso was quoted to have said, in essence, "yeah it's all good we're tight what's a kiss between homies". That's what contributed to there being a bit of confusion in the first 24 hours, as even though this guy's clearly a weirdo I guess she said she was ok with it?
It was later revealed that she (obviously) said absolutely none of that, and the writers of the statement pulled every single quote attributed to her out of their ass. They literally made up quotes from the victim in officially published statements to try to sweep this under the rug, gave shocked pikachu faces when they were revealed to have made everything up, and are now trying to sue her for lying what a circus lmao
