Korg Prologue Polyphonic Analog Synth Review - Daniel Fisher

- Daniel Fisher, Sweetwater’s synth sage, plays and free-form tweaks a prototype of the upcoming Korg Prologue 61-key, 16-voice analog synthesizer featuring three oscillators per voice (two analog and one FM/wavetable). You can use the link below to get to all the details and specs but, for this video, Daniel just plays, without commentary, for almost 30 minutes. Fisher is using an expression pedal connected to the EXPRESSION jack and is sometimes sweeping the Oscillator CROSS MOD parameter with it. The left and right audio outs from the Prologue are going directly to the video cam with no additional processing.

I can't even afford a Volca, why am I here.
Jerry The Obnoxious Mouse. Seriously, Screw Jerry. To dream...!
As we say here in Brazil, "dreaming costs nothing". ;D
Once you get your first Volca, you'll likely be sooo happy you did. I was, even though the OG Minilogue was my first synth and only synth at the time :)
Jerry The Obnoxious Mouse. Seriously, Screw Jerry. Heck I can barely afford the bandwidth to even watch this video 🙄
I can relate to this so much!! Haha
Definitely the best Korg Prologue demo I've heard yet. Also this guy looks like Walter from the Big Lebowski which is a plus.
I'm definitely in my element with this synth! Thanks for watching!
That's just like, your opinion, man.
His friends died face down in the mud to bring you this demo. You're out of your element.
Daniel - unlimited reshpeck, man.
Smokey...this is not NAMM there are rules.
i guess it is kind of off topic but does anybody know a good website to watch new tv shows online?
This is my go to synth. It’s been three years since watching this. So inspiring
So you would highly recommend this over a deepmind12 ? I've got a minilouge and a poly d that I've had about 2weeks and I love it I never dreamed i could own something that close to a real mini moog looking at that 2600 as well but I'm thinking about waiting till they release there OB-xa clon or the desktop poly 800 that stuff probably wont be out till christmas or first quarter of 2022 exciting times to be a musician
The Rev2 may have more features, but I always buy based on sound and to my ears, the Prologue wins. I’ve never been taken by a synth so fast. Had to buy it right away. Honestly, the Multi-Engine with its own controls and EG makes up for lack of a couple LFOs. The real omissions are that motion sequencer and aftertouch. But you can get that with an SQ-1 and cheap pedal.
Daniel you're a synth master, hats off to you sir.
Very interesting synth, it's likely not for me but I think it's great that Korg is bringing a feature rich, regular sized keys,
polyphonic synth to market.
Why comment?
@@auralplex because I think it's great Korg brought a feature rich, regular sized keys, polyphonic synth to market - and I want to support such endeavors.
Why did you even bother commenting yourself? I mean I added support.. you added.. well nothing (a whole 2 years later)
Your demos are great Daniel, thank you so much. I've just ordered one thanks to reviews like yours.
You people keep whining about a lack of modulation possibilities, but listen to the sounds it can make, how complex many of them are, and ask yourself if large modulation possibilities are really needed.
Was thinking the same thing right now. I guess the bi-timbrality, the digital oscillator, knob tweaking and the ability to assign parameters to the wheel and pedal make up for the lack of a mod matrix.
This has to be the best demo I've seen and heard in ages ; it literally sold the synth to me. Only thing is waiting for it to hit the shops in Europe.
Thank you for sharing, Daniel. That was real class. 👍
I’ve tried to convince myself to want a Rev2 since owning a Prologue, mainly bc of the mod options, but playing next to each other, the prologue just sounds noticeably deeper. Somewhat underrated synth IMO
@Rhizosphere If it had a sequencer like Korg does on many lower priced synths with no problem, I'd buy one.
An utterly fantastic display! Well done Daniel and Sweetwater for posting a REAL synthesis video, actually exploring some of the "under the hood" capabilities instead of boringly trying to emulate the usual instruments and sounds. It's about time people started using synthesisers more imaginatively and creating unheard of soundscapes.
Wow, thank you for your comments. And thank you for watching!
Do I ever agree with that!
Just when I was having doubts about my pre order. This is a brilliant demo.
wavetable & FM options too.. they actually made what everyone is been asking for
Lack of a sequencer is a dealbreaker for me, unfortunately.
Mikeureko You don’t have an external sequencer or a DAW to do sequencing? The arpeggiator is pretty powerful and having a poly arpeggiator is a huge plus. I can see your point, though. The Minilogue XD will probably be right up your alley! It doesn’t sound quite as good, IMO, but it’s close.
@@HotStrange I do have a Circuit, but it can only sequence 2 synths, overdubbing the on-board ones (which is great for layering though). I didn't even know you could sequence synths with a DAW, but I'm more interested in a DAWless jamming setup. It does sound like I would enjoy implementing that sequencing into my workflow though.
I already have a Minilogue and am quite happy with it (along with my Volca Sample, FM, and Modular), so I won't be buying any more Korg synths for a while. Currently looking into the Moog Sirin, Behringer Model D, and Behringer Neutron. I guess once I get 2 more of these, it'll be time to get another Circuit! At which point I'll sync my Volcas to it and use their onboard sequencers.
That's a long-winded explanation of where I'm coming from, lol. Thanks for trying to help :)
@@jonremymusic5192 Have you tried zZounds for your instruments?
This synth sounds massive. Wow. Impressive. Love the Space sounds! Daniel sounds like he does what I like to do with synthesizers, but he does it better! Not every analog synth is created equally. It also takes a very knowledgeable player to demo it! If I had one of these synths I would stay in my music room and make space noises all day and only come out to use the bathroom. Cheers!
Best product introduction ever made for this synth.
Great demo as always - great sound. Thanks.
Hi D r Jezz, just wait until I've put some hours on it! Thanks for watching!
I love the sweetwater playreview's Daniel is great!
Hi Triplebacon Art, the Prologue definitely inspired me non-stop during the whole tweaking session. I'll have more spec detailed videos in the near future. Thanks for watching!
Looking forwards to those thanks!
very good demo Daniel. provides good insight into the sonic capabilities of the prologue.
Now this is how you demo a synth! Great job.
Got one the other day. I do have the Minilogue and, I got a DeepMind12. People are concerned about it being 4 Minilogues with some reverb. The two synths share the same VCO structure (or very similar rather), 2 VCO, 3 waveforms, all with different wave shaping capabilities. That’s where the primary similarities end. The 3rd oscillator is, at the moment, primarily a VPM (or FM in Yamaha speak) synth engine. You have 16 user slots here, one of the slots come preloaded with a wavetable synth from Korg, 2 wavetables with a sub wavetable, these can modulate each other. So it’s not an analog synth with a bunch of digital sampled waveforms in the 3rd oscillator (although you can obviously dial up basic waveforms if needed). Will be interesting to see how far people will be able to take it with the SDK. People talk about missing after touch, personally I’m happy that someone finally made a synth with _quiet_ keys, fast action, as well as excellent velocity response (you got 9 curves I believe), I can live without AT here. Why would anyone want a sequencer onboard by the way? As for the DM12....umm I guess you can blow out candles with it as a party trick, the two fans inside are...really great. It does have after touch but, the keybed is absolutely horrible (unless you only play elevator music like Uli Behringer, or make Stranger Things covers for a living:-). Sound wise there’s no comparison, but the DeepMind12 is a low budget affair, so can’t hold that against it.
Great review! You saved this synth in my opinion from other boring reviews
Fantastic sound demo, thanks for sharing!
Thanks AA, it was a gas jamming on it. I'll have more specific videos about it as time goes on. Thanks for watching!
For anyone curious about this vs the Minilogue XD. I sold my Prologue to get the XD and I’m currently about to sell my XD to get the Prologue back. They’re both great synths, but IMO, the Prologue sounds better. And having more voices, bi-timbrality, a full ADSR with more destinations, an actual audio rate LFO with more destinations, and full size keys it worth more to me than the sequencer on the XD, though the sequencer is awesome.
Thanks for the comparison
Rich! Wow I LOVE this one, it's got some amazingly powerful sounds, the one at 28:09, wow. And not monophonic. Thank you so much Korg!
A review without words. Nice 😊
Best demo of this synth so far. HUGE posibilities it has.
Holy crap... I was just thinking after playing the Minilogue for the first time... "Man I wish they would make something called the Prologue with 8 voices instead of 4." Well, you gave me 16... And for that, I love you Korg.
this may or may not be one of the best sounding synths of all time (I have it - at least partly due to this video - and love it, so I'm clearly biased), but this is certainly one of the best synth demos of all time.
Finally Korg makes a very nice and affordable synth again!
Near 30 minutes of sonic bliss in this video, thank you for that :D
Hi agerven, it's even better when you're in front of it with powerful speakers. Thanks for watching!
What a dream machine.. well done Korg!
🙌
Great demo. I love this guy!
Thanks, Dark Horseman. I love my job! Thanks for watching!
Dan sold me on getting both the Wavestate and the ModWave (you have to see that video!). Then I got the Mono for bass.
This and the Drumlogue would make my Korg system complete! Might as well drop in a Mini for a great system.
Oh, an MS-20, a 2600, and that sequencer, and that KAOS thing, and...
QUOTE: "And I know you don't want to hear me talking about it" LOOOOOL :-D Smart man :-)
Thanks for the demo, nice work: really appreciated!
Love what you did there (4:04), Daniel!
Hi Grant, it's surprising how well the wavetable oscillator blends with the two analog oscillators. Thanks for watching!
Sounds great, definitely getting it...Thanks Daniel, awesome demo.
Thanks for checking it out! 😎
Of course you will, you're designing synthesizer patches for a living... ;-)
As much as i would like to beat on about how great this sounds,.... (YES I BLOODY LOVE IT !!!), i think its good to bear in my mind for other manufactures to start digging deep and start developing some decent competiton to this synthesizer. Thanks for the demonstration sweetwater well worth the 29+minuites watch 👍
that organ-ish sound on 3:50 is already pretty sweet. I deeply hope that they've implemented the microtuning feature from the monologue :O
fantastic thanks for your time
Great demo Mr.Fisher!
Prologue or the Rev 2 is the big question. I do think the Prologue seem to sound more to my taste, more sweetspots. But the Rev 2 has more modulation options, and it's got a fatar keybed with aftertouch.
Wow! This thing sounds really nice to me. We're not exactly short of analogue / hybrid poly synths these days. Maybe only since the last couple of years. But to my ears this sounds like one of the nicest so far. Always like the DSI stuff. And I loved the Behringer Deep Mind sound. I think this beats them both. Very nice. Wonder what the Aus price will be.
Dogboy73 I was thinking the same thing. Its quite refreshing to listen to . My polysix hunt has well and truly been cancelled.
It looks and sounds awesome!
4:26 this sound is magic!
Hi tompparaideri. It's ridiculously easy to get magical sounds out of a Korg Prologue. Everything blends so well. Thanks for watching!
Trippy! Looks like a beast of a synth!
Greetings Supreme Lord Commander, It sounds like a beast as well. Thanks for watching!
WHY YES I WILL CONTACT MY SWEETWATER SALES ENGINEER THANKYOUVERYMUCH!
It sounds great! This one has stereo outs, correct? And from what I hear, they've omitted the motion sequencing the Minilogue and Monologue are known for?
so stoked, FM and wavetable !!!
Hi Vivian, I can honestly say that I'm pleasantly shocked at how well the FM/Wavetable MULTI ENGINE organically blends with the two analog oscillators. Thanks for watching!
it's seriously a dream synth
I have a Minilogue and love it. Will definitely be ordering a 16 voice Prologue.
Definately getting this beast.
Holy crap
Nice work Korg
Thanks Daniel, sounds lush
Hi MrBoxxed, "Lush" is definitely one of the descriptions I kept thinking while I was tweaking the Prologue. And I definitely said "Wow" out loud more than a few times. Thanks for watching!
This sound surprisingly good!
This sounds so good
nice demo, some great sounds there
Thanks, Big Dawg! 👍
Love it! A lot of the sounds remind me of Jean-Luc Ponty's keyboards.
Damn, that sounds good!
Always totally underwhelmed by Korgs own promotional material, I though this thing sounded thin and crap till I watched this video. It happens every time.
I agree, even worse with the Waldorf Quantum promo videos. I always look for people who actually have done things with a synth before I decide it is for me. Test drive if you can (never trust the car salesperson).
GREaston
If Sweetwater's Daniel Fisher can't make a synth he is demoing sound great, its not worth buying. I heard other demos of this Synth by other players that used poly chords, played some nice runs, but failed to show off the capability of this synth like Daniel Fisher.
Wow - sounds amazing
Great demo Daniel. You really did an amazing job showing this thing off and your demos just get better and better as you go. Congrats.
I have no idea what to make of this synth. Seems like it's almost better at digital style sounds than classic analogue stuff. I've been listening to demos all morning and I have to say it's taken me hours to hear stuff I like come out of the Prologue which, for me, is usually a bad sign.
As an aside does anyone know what filter is in this thing? Some patches I've heard in various demos remind me very much of the MS20 filter. I wonder if they've not just pilfered the filter out of their new ms20 mini?
It's likely a modified design from the Minilogue, it has nothing in common with MS-20 filter to my ears.
Pad at 18:40 Is spectacular
For those who are hating, the Jupiter 8 only had one LFO, just saying
Beautiful patch ideas from this video. No idea how you made some of these lol
Really thank you for this great video
Thanks Akiss, it was a blast. I turned it on and started tweaking. Thanks for watching!
SweetwaterSound this video made me order one. It is A very capable synth. I can’t wait to see what ordinary will do with it.
5:32 is so Jean-Luc Ponty!
Very jealous. You had FAR too much fun making this vid ! ! ! ;o)
Guilty as charged. Thanks for watching!
I can't even bear all the sounds i could build in it, omfg. i want it NOW! Nobody is showing the prices though...
Hi Matthew, on all Sweetwater product videos, you will find links to the demonstrated products in the Info section. The links will take you to further descriptions and current prices. Thanks for watching!
16:45 Terry Riley style
Wonderful .. Merveilleux ..!!
One of the best things with the minilogue is the sequencer and the 8 voicemodes
Welp. No need to buy it now that we’ve heard every sound it can possibly make! 🤪 I’m surprised I havent ran across this video yet. Never thought to research the prologue. Gj! 👍🏼
This thing is an ambient monster, that LFO is so great too. What a great synth, maybe some day I might be able to afford one, I think I'll stick with my Monologue for now though.
Retro Plus Monologue is still amazing.
Man. Wish the prologue and the polybrute would have a baby that has the polybrute's control features but the prologue's sound and voice count.
THE SOUND 😍
Nice demo! That arp @18:00 ... wow! With the split keyboard, you could play on top of it with a different sound?
Hi Valdis, Yes, you can Split, Layer, and even Cross Fade two different presets. Thanks for watching!
First, Prologue sounds excellent and looks like a very solid build! It has a serious Minilogue vibe to it and more! Some minor and not so minor feature set differences (honestly a bit disappointed in some of thier decisions, I understand though). Not sure if this is worth $2000 or $1500 for me. Do I really need or want 16/8 voices of the Mini??? The Wavetable/FM OSC is super sick though! Going to pipe in four voices of FM8 or Wave Station into my Mini's external input and see what kind of Prologue flavor's i can get! Happy NAMM time to us synth fingers!
Hi Alex, listening to new gear and then finding a way to create similar sounds on your own equipment is an excellent way to explore synthesis. Thanks for watching!
At 28' very apocalitcic sound,Amazing!!!
I would have gotten it if I didn't have the Minilogue ;)
What would you recommand me ? For fat sound ? Rev2 ? Peak ? Digitone ? :D
Great synth I wish I could have heard it's Mono style synth lead (more keyboard technique) with pitch bend and modulation ! I'm a big Moog fan but I know the Korg Prologue is amazing and can do just about anything ! Cheers !
What a bangin intro
I love it, is this the best synth around?
Sold at 18:32
If Korg drops this into a module format its a done deal for me.
Desktop version please?
Good job Daniel. You just sold another one!
Superb!
Thanks, Adrian. It was a blast making it.
I’m wondering if this Korg has optional knob catch-up feature like jdxa? I noticed that occasionally one of the knob twists resulted in a jolt.
Hi Brian. The Korg Prologue has all three knob modes: Jump (which I was using), Catch, and Scale, providing all three types of knob behaviors. Thanks for watching!
It does! It’s a setting in the menus.
not sure if it's just me but because I use the pitch bend ALL THE TIME, not having it to the far left, kind of kills it for me every time. That's usually a deal breaker for me but if I ever bend, it would be for this one.
Nice tonal sensibility on the part of the player...
Now we're really getting somewhere ...Roland JP8....how much longer do you need ????
Awesome demo, sounds amazing
Hi TheSilentVortex, I was truly inspired by this beast while I was playing it. It was difficult to make a sound I didn't like. Thanks for watching!
I've been tempted by the minilogue and other equivalents, I need to wait and buy the first proper synth. This or others.
Rhizosphere the XD is certainly awesome but doesn’t sound quite as good, IMO. It still sounds excellent, though.
I don't know what it is about the Minilogue and Prologue... the sounds hit me really deep. Like there are hidden worlds in there. I want to love the Hydrasynth deluxe (which is not discontinued!) but it doesn't quite resonate with me the same way?
Sir i am gonna ask you to take your hands of that pitchbend wheel!
I haven't heard anything about mod matrix or routing options. I wonder if what's on top of the synth is all you get? Just one LFO and no mod matrix? And what about assignable envelopes?
I didn't find a way to assign the envelope to the oscillator shape which is important in FM-like sounds. I downloaded the manual to make sure. It turns out the VPM oscillator has a built in envelope with attack and decay.
This may be a novice question, but when he is tweaking the filters and not playing the keys is he using a sustain pedal or is are the filters sustaining from the keys being touched prior to the filter tweaking? I would expect there to be more decay without a sustain pedal.
Hi Michael. You are correct, I am using s Sustain Pedal. Thanks for watching!
Sold!
I agree! :)
mootbooxle moot you can make a broken piano sound nice, is there any keyed instrument you aren't a wizard at?
sold...me and the Moot
Sauce_Aux haha, you're very kind! I can probably play anything with keys on it, but I usually feel like much less than a wizard! I can't wait to get all wizardy with this Prologue. Already pre ordered it!
Station 2Station we have good taste in synths, huh?
It was love at first sound. Time to sell everything and buy it.
That sounds nice:)
I hope Roland come up with something as well!
dwightddddd 😂😂😂😂😂 they will, bring your magnifying glass again though.
Yeah Jamie, your right man:)
Hard to see them little synth boxes.
Jupiter 16? :)
We wish man:)
They have got to do something outstanding.
Roland should hire that young dude from Korg.
dwightddddd the system 8 is actually really great but I’d love to see another analogue mono or poly from them.
Dystopian science fiction soundtracks from the last 40 years all in one box.
Hilarious review, hard not to be impressed.
Hi suereed, it is definitely ready to make lots of soundtracks! And I definitely became more impressed the more I tweaked it. Thanks for watching!
24 : 30 that patch !!!!!
one of your better demos thank you....well it has a wide sweet spot ....for the money I would rather get peak....or Rev 2 8 voice, not to say it isn’t a good synth it is a good synth just depends on what you already have and what you need....
Nice preview! Industry Take Note. We don’t need more of the same!
