KORG Volca sample, bass, beats, keys: TECHNO #3

  • Here it is: The Korg Volca techno #3 :). Everything is pure Volca sound (beside the Korg Monotron wich add some delay to the Volca Bass). No post processing. Recorded with an Apogee Duet audio interface.
    The Volca sample is used for some additional drums (factory preset samples), the bass sound (one shot sampled from the Volca Bass) and the short "beep" sound (one shot sampled from the Volca Keys).
    Hope you like it.
    The tiny mixer is a diy passive mixer. very simple and cheap to build if you know how to solder. Perfect for the volcas.

    Man I keep coming back to this video. Every time I find something else cool I like about it. The ping-pong delay at the beginning. The late entry of the kick on the Beats. The gradual detuning of one of the VCOs on the Bass. The breakdown using the keys and some reverb. And all done by hand on those tiny touch ribbons and knobs. It’s masterful. What an inspiration.

      Yeah this was pretty tight. Im sure he did some preparations but i wonder how much of this was just improvisation on the fly and how much it was something he practised before he made this. Never the less slapped really hard and required skill. I think this video itself is a good proof that volcas are more than toys than some people deem them to be. Sure, they do lack what alot of others and more expensive synths do, but in the right hands they are very good. Im glad korg decided to make these things.

      Are u implying that u are superised that musicians don't always play keys drums guitar or sing? Lol jk but it's a common view of the older generation that if you aren't playing a traditional instrument with vox its not real music, truth me told production of electronic music especially at (higher levels of difficulty) is not any different than motzart writing a symphony, he did the work of putting it together the way we do these days in modern studios and conducting was basically hitting play, changing only slightly where today someone like me can play guitar sing, play drums, keys and FULLY produce and master the whole album n the funny thing is the instrumentation that people sometimes consider real music, compared to a song written in protools or ableton. The instrumentation is the easiest part usually. Becoming a GOOD dj Emcee or Producer these things take more skill, time, and comprehensive understanding of everything from theory to modern applications and new technologies mixed with old analog like this for the warmest sounds. No disrespect just funny some people still feel (electronic music Is less "real" ) than say rock n roll, I beg to argue without robert moog and tech like voice boxes even electric guitars were probably looked at no differently. BUT if u like that check out some of the greats like, squarepusher with his mix of jazz break beats and electronic production that for the time is light-years ahead of itself. These days we have buttons to do this kind of staggering MASHEDUP style traditionally made note by note hit by hit much like the great composers once did.. music is changing soo quickly but our cultural understanding and acceptance seem to take a bit longer.. all my best, to see whats cutting edge today check out someone like beardyman all LIVE looping to create amazing sets! All my best

    @iamhall Před 2 lety +13

    Once every so often I rewatch these videos. They’re a MasterClass. I just noticed how he brings the bassline in at 1:45 by opening up the Sample’s low shelf filter. This guy did a lot of little tricks like that to be able to bring in/out elements with one hand only. These videos are a product of a heck of a lot of learning, planning, and practice.

    • @Cimoe
      @Cimoe Před rokem

      Can you explain how this is done? I have a Volca Sample and don't know what and how he is doing this...

    • @iamhall
      @iamhall Před rokem +7

      @@Cimoe I re-watched the first bit of the video, so here is what I see happening with the Sample. Follow along with your eyes and ears... At 0:02 he starts up a program that plays the sonar ping sound. At 0:05 he fiddles with the reverb mix knob to add... well, reverb to the ping. At 1:05 he unmutes one of the parts that has a high hat sound. At 1:12 he unmutes part slot 2, which is a finger snap sound. At 1:18 he unmutes part slot 4, which is a bass. At 1:45, he does two things -- he tweaks the bass analog isolator knob with his left hand to boost the bass sound, but then immediately launches a chained pattern (song) with his right hand -- to introduce a chord progression by having the ping sound turn into a melody and the bassline become more complex. So, what were the tricks we saw? 1. Write a program with everything, then save it with just about every instrument muted. Then unmute various instruments as you play. 2. Instead of starting a song with all effects going, introduce effects later on (like the reverb and bass boost). 3. Introduce a new section of your song by programming new sequences using the same instruments and launch them on the fly. I recommend watching and listening closely through the song. Watch his hands. Listen to what changes with each tweak or press. Look at your Volca to see exactly what buttons or knobs are being manipulated. Figure out what was programmed beforehand. Do it with all the Volcas. Can you work out the sequence of how he played each Volca? How was each Volca set up before the performance? Can you recreate parts of the performance on your Volca? The cool thing is that other than the Sample, you can at least roughly recreate the sounds yourself with some experimentation. It's like when a student goes to a museum to copy a famous painting -- look closely, figure out how it was done bit by bit, then recreate on your canvas. Good luck!

      also for have experiment in many way lots of vst and hardware the sound of a synth analogic is way better than any vst. When you use a volca keys with a space echo is just better than any ableton reverb or massive preset than you'll get. The problem of these machine IMO is that there is no MIDI out, only mini jack out!! and also they are very small and you need very tiny finger to use the keyboard. the best way to put them in set up is to send midi note from keyboard and to have midi signal splitter.

    Those small gears, Volca's, this revival on Analog gear is a great news ! More than 20 years in the desert for analog synths. Guy around 50 now was too yound in the early 80s to get one...
    Then, analog was replace by digital synth D50, DX7... Yes, those was good synth, a little bit less expensive, but this gave alos a lot of synth without any savor.
    I was always asking me : Why they did not recreate Prophet, Jupiter.... Finally, it took more than 20 years ! Again we had discover analog synth !
    Synths are my passion ! I've the Volcas too. Those gears, for the price, are incredible. But do not imagine you can play like this in few days. Creating music on them can be compex, not alway intuitive... But at the end, this sounding like.... real root analog !

    This is actually the best volca video I’ve seen and I’ve seen a LOT. Of course techno and ambient are two different worlds, but from those using volca sample, this is by far the best.

    Man, I've watched a ton of Volca videos the last few months, getting to learn these things, looking for inspiration, and have to say, your track here just keeps on worming into my ears. Great melody, tension, build... it's just a damn good song. Shows you don't need the fanciest gear with the sweetest tricks to make beautiful arrangements that hook. Shows you don't need expensive gear to have a good sounding mix. Thanks for putting this out there!
