- Jules Bianchi was one of Formula 1's most exciting emerging talents. Jules Bianchi made history by becoming the first ever driver to be signed to the Ferrari Driver Academy. His talent was clear and it was just about certain that one day, he would be a full time Scuderia Ferrari diver. Unfortunately, Jules Bianchi would hit a tractor crane during the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix suffering a brain injury that put him in a coma. Tragically, Jules would lose his battle and passed away 9 months later. The accident wasn't down to just one reason, the thorough investigation contained 396 pages and a list of recommendations. We never got to see Jules in the competitive car he deserved, but he forever remains a legend. One lap ahead.

Hey everyone just a quick correction, Jules Passed away on the 17th of July 2015, not the 25th. Accidental writing mistake on my part. Sorry about that. #JB17
There is actually kind of a twist if Jules had survived. At the 2018 Belgian Grand Prix Charles Leclerc had been saved by the halo, which was brought in after Jules' death. So if Jules survived Charles would have sustained injuries and potentially crushing Charles. As Jules survived the halo wouldn't have been brought in by 2018. So If Jules survived Charles would most likely die in this scenario and in the real world Jules died and Charles survived.

I always imagine how Charles felt after everything, when I hear the names of Jules Bianchi and Antoine Hubert. Charles lost his Godfather, Father and one of his closest friends in a span of 5 years. For most people only one is enough to trigger a depression. Guy has nerves of steel.
Charles also lost his father, i felt so bad with him, Charles is absolutley talent, if Ferrari can make great F1 car

Whenever Charles crashes, I get extremely anxious, specially knowing how he lost 2 people he was extremely close to. I wish Charles all the best, and maybe one day, a championship for all his hard work, dedication and perseverance.
Seeing Charles win in 2019 wearing Red was so beautiful yet saddening, knowing that Jules too would've done it one day. It would've been a privilege to see him fight up front, he was taken away too soon. RIP Jules

@@cassius348 Like so many great talents, he got more out of that car than he should have been able to get out of it. Ferrari knew that, which is why they had him pegged to move to the team in the future despite his low points. Jules and Charles together at Ferrari would have been very interesting. For one, I think even in the event they were direct competitors for a Driver's Championship, they would have stayed close. I wish we could have seen it happen.

That rule was there before bianchis crash. If I remember correctly, there was even a f1 session in china delayed because of the smog.

The fact that Massa praised him to such a level even calling him the best kart racer he has seen means that we were never able to see him at full speed in a fast car. All we saw was a potential world champion driving a marussia.

Charles has one of the most saddest stories off track of any driver. He lost Jules, Anthoine and his father in span of 5 years 😖
He's not here with us, but a part of his soul is instilled well inside Charles, that Ferrari seat is rightfully theirs no matter what and I'm glad that Charles is carrying Jules' torch really well...

If the FIA and Ferrari would allow Charles to change his number for one race (France or Monaco), to number 17 or even 71 (17 backwards lol), to honor Jules.
It's too late for the 5th "anniversary" (for lack of a better word), so it would be nice for the 10th.
I can see how we could get carried away with this as well. Cuz now, why not run all the other numbers of drivers who passed at an F1 track (example, Senna), or from serious injuries later (Jules).
Or... Maybe drivers would think these numbers might be "cursed" and it's a horrible idea 🤣🤦♂️

@@choobs8511 and they won’t let them use 13 since Antoine started p13 at the Belgium gp 2019 and in that race there were 2 deaths including Antonine I’m pretty sure this is a superstition however
At first I hated the halo, I felt like it took away that dangerous rock star feel from F1 , then I watched it save 3 lives so far and realized that sense of danger I thought it lost when I was a little younger isn’t as important as these rockstars lives, I feel foolish that I even felt that way
I felt the same man don't feel bad it always takes time to accept major changes to motorsports.
The halo apparently wouldn't have made a difference in Jules' case, I cant say for sure but I think I read that somewhere

@@Denozo88 It might have saved Charles. There is no way to know if that tire would have hit him or how much damage it would have done. I'm still glad we never had to find out the answer to that question, though. It 100% saved Romain's life. That crash is for sure fatal without it. He likely would have been decapitated.
Quite the sad story. He'd be 32 if alive today and I'm sure turned himself into a reference in the grid. But as Sam said at the end, there's somewhat of continuity of his legacy in Charles Leclerc.
Can still remember the confusion that ensued his crash... "it seems another car has crashed near Sutil". Even the GPS was confused by the appalling visibility conditions and only after all cars returned to the pitlane it became obvious it was Bianchi.

This makes me remember just how strong Charles is. To have lost Jules and Antoine and still push everyday to race in their honour as well as his own, that’s so admirable. I know so many drivers were horrifically affected by jules and antoine. The way he was deeply connected to them both would’ve been so hard to take I can’t imagine how he feels climbing into to his car every session

It was really sad, he said that when his father was close to dying, he lied to him telling him that Ferrari had signed him, just to make him happy. This was during 2018, before he was confirmed as a Ferrari driver
@@wassapdude94 Oh 100% my head went to those two specifically scaring him from the sport having it taken them so tragically. But you’re right, his father’s passing must’ve been the hardest. He had to carry on for that promise

@@WETiLAMBY Maybe. Jules probably would have gone to Ferrari at the same time Charles ended up going. Maybe a couple years earlier. I think Charles would have likely still ended up at Alfa. I think two things would have occurred had Jules survived. Kimi's career would have been shorter and Carlos would still be at McLaren. That probably would have had a follow on effect of Daniel still being at Alpine, which means either Fernando would have never made a comeback or Esteban would have been left without a seat. Whether or not Jules beat Seb like Charles did probably would have decided if Seb was still at Ferrari. Seb has become somewhat inconsistent, so I think he would have beat him and Charles would have ended up at Ferrari anyway.
@@rainman6090 I think he would have been there either in 2014 or around 2016-2017, and in those years Charles wasn't even in F1
I'll never forget him racing to that P9 in Monaco. It meant so much to Marussia, they celebrated like they'd won the WDC
Better yet, he would have finished P7 if it wasn't for the time penalty.
I'm hoping one day Charles Leclerc becomes world champion. Because he is in many ways sort of the legacy of Bianchi and Hubert. And I will never forget those tragedies, not as long as Charles embodies the success these two men were never able to pursue, cut short by two freak accidents never as much as considered.
However, tragedy like this also results in action. This accident was one of the reasons the Halo was added to the car. So indirectly, this tragedy has already prevented more injury and most likely saved Grosjean's life.
Rest in peace Jules. Rest in peace Antoine. You will never be forgotten.

The halo wouldn't have saved him here, as the final accident report mentioned at 6:17:
"It is considered fundamentally wrong to make an impact between a racing car and a large and heavy vehicle survivable. It is important to prevent a car ever hitting the crane and/or the marshals near it".
The halo did save the his godson Leclerc who was hit by a wheel, though. It's definitely worth it.
I can only imagine what him and Leclerc at Ferrari would've been like.

I’d like to think Jules is still attending to his godfather duties even though he is not with us anymore. The introduction of the halo has saved countless lives, including that of Charles, but it is still a shame that the death of a wonderful driver with such potential was the catalyst to this safety-conscious change.

This story still makes me emotional. 7 years later and I still cannot believe it. What a fantastic driver he was man.... he was a very nice person too. He was 100% a future F1 champion in my opinion and a huge loss for F1.
Everytime I see Leclerc stepping in the Ferrari now, my mind always goes to Bianchi doing so. Such a sad story...

@@TheNick34752 Ok so I m gonna ask you the other way. How could you tell he was a fantastic driver if he was in a Marussia? And yes, he wasnt even close to points. His only two points came at the 2014 Monaco GP with a 9th place. But in the rest, he finished 13th and then 14th once, but other than that 15th and below every race. C'mon, if you watched F1 at that time you knew he was just a regular driver in a mediocre team. Only his ties with Ferrari made him somewhat popular.

Then how did we know in 2019 that Russel was an amazing driver?? He was in a Williams fighting for P19 in every race. You always have to take in consideration the car each driver is driving. Russel was brilliant in that Williams and Bianchi was brilliant in that Marussia. The 2013 and 2014 Marussia cars were 4 - 6 seconds off the pace in qualifyings... I'm not joking. Williams in 2019 was terrible, but it was only 3-5 seconds off pace. The marussia was even worse than that!!.... what more can you expect from Bianchi when he was driving a car like that??? He scored points, He made it into Q2 at least 3 times and in Silverstone in 2014 he qualified 12th!!!.... He was always miles ahead of his teammate too and in front of the Caterhams when it was possible. He had the 11th fastest lap in Melburne. Anything more than those achievements was simply not possible. He finished P13 in Malaysia and saved the team in 2013 and then he saved them again in 2014 with those points. Also his karting days.... Massa is so right. This guy was amazing. One of the best go kart drivers I have also seen.
Also there is also one more thing you have to consider. Back in 2013 nobody was really talking about the backmarker teams. Nowadays, you see Haas and Williams on TV way more often than what we used to see Marussia in 2013 and 2014. This is a reason why most people overlooked him and every other driver who was driving for Marussia, HRT or Caterham. It is not a coincidence that Ferrari wanted him as a driver for 2016 or 2017 at least.
It was impossible to do anything more with those cars. That's why we were so excited to see him in Sauber for 2015 and especially in Ferrari for 2016 or 2017. This guy was gonna become a legend in the future.... and that's what makes his story even more sad.

Strange to think that the seat meant for Leclerc's godfather became his. I hope Leclerc doesn't have to lose anyone close to him again until they are old and have lived a full life.
Gasly's close-call brought me here.
Without Jules' sacrifice we would have lost so many tens of drivers : Hamilton (Verstappen crash at Monza), Guanyu Zhou (Silverstone crash) among many, many others besides this 2022 season. His death saved so many others as it was his death path truly raised awareness of the dangers of F1, without him there would be no halo - and off course the tragic death of Hubert also helped the cause. RIP young men, you died for so many others after you.

I just learnt recently that Jules' great uncle, Lucien Bianchi also died in a motor racing accident, testing for Alfa Romeo at Circuit de la Sarthe in 1969. He'd won the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1968 driving the iconic Gulf Ford GT40.
I never realized how much Jules looks like Charles...

Please watch a vid of the impact, to know why a travesty of negligence his unnecessary death was . . .green flag with that piece of machinery on track during rain . . . .as unnecessary as Senna's accident that cost him his life. Remember this amazing young driver, and Antoine Hubert . . .Rest In Peace guys.

Some people forget Jules was Charles’ godfather, I’m pretty sure with Jules’ guidance Charles could’ve been much better than he is today and Jules could have been a star today.

We went to Suzuka for the Japanese GP a few years after Jules' passing, and there was a small memorial near the Dunlop curve where fans left flowers. Nearly brought me to tears. He may be gone, but hopefully he is not forgotten.

i loved the guy, he raced under my lucky number and the fact that he died on my birthday killed me. he was one of the first drivers i loved since i had recently started to watch motorsports
Your sudden drop into the incident that happen to Jules was sudden, but that’s how it was, sudden. Whether it was intentional or not to have a sudden drop into reality, it worked. While I never had the pleasure to witness Jules race I hold a high respect for the history and the potential surrounding not only Jules but other races who lost their lives, on and off the track.
I saw him at the pool of the hotel we were staying at the day after the Singapore Grand Prix in 2014, 2 weeks before the Japanese GP, and I should've spoken to him.

I'm here after the Suzuka race in 2022. It were the same conditions and almost the same thing happened to Gasly. If Gasly was 2 meters to the left he would have been most likely dead. THIS SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN!
My F1 Buff friend rated Jules a lot and i remembered his name very well, when i heard of the crash and his death, i could not believe it, life could be such a turn around sometimes, May his soul rest in peace and hope Charles fulfill his God Father Uncle's Dream.

I remember my mom telling me he died and I was probably 10 at the time it effected me so much, I remember crying a lot after I heard the news because I'd never experienced anyone close to me or anyone looked up to pass away and for someone I looked up to the most to die was so upsetting for me, it is sad we lost such a great driver and it is upsetting to think how hard it must have been for his family his friends and his team.

Jules accident triggered changes in regulations such as the VSC and the halo; that is part of his legacy, which has saved many lives after his tragic accident
Gasly narrowly avoided disaster in the 2022 Japanese GP not long ago. And because of a tractor crane present, he was also furious by the carelessness of the officials having disregarded the tragedy that took away Jules' life.

I've seen Jules' accident (and couldn't sleep that night), then the announcement of his passing in July 2015, and a month later, in August 2015, Justin Wilson's accident at Pocono 500. A freaking nose cone hitting his head. The immediate response from both F1 and Indy to think and create any solution (which would become the Halo for F1 and Aeroscreen for Indy) was nice, though it was unfortunate to be due to losing drivers. Sir, you made me tear on this video. Great piece.
I thank you for this video, I didn't find enough material for myself to make the situation clear. You made this far easier for me and of course it is a very very sad story but one which makes everyone think. It is really important to study these events to learn always be conscious of the beauty but also the danger of this wonderful sport. Wish the best for his family and friends for the painful loss and good luck for their future.

He died on 17th July 2015, not 25th. And you could also have told, that on the day before he crashed, before it was announced, that Vettel is going to left Red Bull and also that it's said that he's going to Ferrari, which is the reason, why he was announced on the 5th Octobre 2014 to drive for Sauber, what never happened. And Vettel also dedicated his win in Hungary to Bianchi.
Pretty much the entire grid had a Sauber contract for 2015...

I remember the day he passed away, I remember crying. It’s a sad and very real reminder that motorsport is dangerous even to this day.
I highly doubt we will ever see another death in f1 history. If he had the halo on his car that day he would be with us still
I remember how sombre the aftermath of the race was. Since the incident was not caught on camera and the full details were yet to be disclosed, did not think it was serious to this extent at the time. I wasn't very active on social media back in 2014 so I didnt really keep tabs on his recovery. Only read about his death from a newspaper article an year later and it came as a shock to me I thought if its been this long surely he would survive.
I remember the sombre aftermath as well. The lack of information really didn't sit well with me. All I knew at the time was that something really bad must have happened to Bianchi, as the crash wasn't broadcast. Later that day I saw some amateur footage of the crash (I had to find out what had happened) and then I knew he wouldn't survive. Easily the worst day in Formula 1 since 1 May 1994.
I knew him well. Worked with him for a few years in Marussia F1. Super nice guy. It was a tragic day when we lost him. Lots of Talent.

I remember seeing the accident on TV, I was little at the time and didn't understand the full situation, I just remember seeing that car drift off in something that wasn't on camera or isn't recorded in my brain, hearing of his death, many years later made me so sad, and everytime I hear his story, that image pops up, and it almost brings me to tears every time, seeing something so tragic not understanding what it actually meant, shakes me

The saddening twist is that the halo broughtin after his death has most likely saved others in the paddock and more strikingly Charles leclerc. id have loved to have seen jules up front fighting for wins but the safety features brought in have been mega.
