Lyrics:
you come out at night
that's when the energy comes
and the dark side's light
and the vampires roam
you strut your rasta wear
and your suicide poem
and a cross from a faith
that died before Jesus came
you're building a mystery
you live in a church
where you sleep with voodoo dolls
and you won't give up the search
for the ghosts in the halls
you wear sandals in the snow
and a smile that won't wash away
can you look out the window
without your shadow getting in the way
oh you're so beautiful
with an edge and a charm
but so careful
when I'm in your arms
'cause you're working
building a mystery
holding on and holding it in
yeah you're working
building a mystery
and choosing so carefully - Hudba

@@user-qo8ik9ip5hno. the late 90s started to suck. Smash Mouth and Creed were the beginning of the end. That's where music died, and where it's stuck to this day.
This song immediately reminds me of when life was good. 😔
Where are my 90s fans?
Right here. 70s and 80s also.
This song made me feel like magic is real ✨️ ✨️ ✨️
@marvinsegura7307 Sarah McLachlan Building A Mystery is one of my favorite song

@brandonmoore7497 it is my one and only song that makes me feel alive ✨️
funny how 3 seconds of a song can bring back a tsunami of crystal clear memories
Soooo true.
I have been rocking it for since the 60s.My music keeps me centered and same.
It’s sad knowing the 90’s are over and won’t ever be back.
🥲
Don't fret, we have the memories and nostalgia
For real
I miss it a lot. Now, I am 50 and dying from cancer of the stomach. Oh well, I wish you all long lives. We had past moments of glory and now we fade away slowly.
Each day brings new chances and new opportunities. If you isolate yourself you will be alone. We all must die but our bodies will keep its energy here . The secret is that when you die, you wont know that you are gone anyway. There are new trials with k9 medication that arrested pancreatic cancer. Dont succumb to sadness. Beside cancer, there are 5 other things inside the body that would have been the next thing that would have killed you. You still have life today. find you a cancer buddy and help one another. Please don't live the rest of yourl ife waiting to die@@remogatron1010
The nostalgia hits so hard with this song. Was blessed to be a 90s teen.
Sarah McLachlan would break an HD camera with her beauty.
This song reminds me of my mom. She passed away 3 years ago at 60. She had this CD in her car on repeat when I was a kid. Everytime I hear it, I picture her driving her brand new Pontiac sunfire convertible listening to this and it makes me cry. Mostly cry because you cant turn back time unfortunately.
I'm sorry about your mom
Payne Baust ❤️❤️❤️
God speed. Remember that there is no death but a temporary separation. You will see your mother again and get to be with her.
Beautiful memory, sorry for you about your Mom
I so understand!
The 90s wasn't a decade. It was an emotion.
💜
Oh what I'd give to experience those times again. I may have been a small, naive yougster but I remember all this music and I understood the attitude.
i miss it. 90,91...94, 98, the Good years.
Well said.
It was beautiful, I still feel it when I hear this song
My favorite Sarah McLachlan song. MTV played it so much during the summer of ‘97. I was 13. If you’re 13 years old now, just know that whatever music you’re listening now will shape your life forever. The 90s will always be the best decade of my life.
I was 13 in 1985. I absolutely agree that the music you listen to at that age will be with you all your life.
100% It was a different time. 1996-8 were the best years for music.
I don't listen to any new music today. I can't stand it
I was 13 in 2004-2005. The music was shit then, and I don't miss it. It's of course... So, so much worse now but it is what it is!
Mine..is the 60's and 70's . The hippie had a revolution against what the government is doing to us today. So profound. And the Music played then goes with the rights for the people today. So the government has been working slowly quietly to bring us down, and we had forgotten the warning the music was telling us . All those year's ago. 😮😊❤🗽🇺🇲💪.God Bless The people.
We the people have the power to change things around, we are stronger than we give ourselves credit for. ❤🗽🗽🇺🇲
The depth and freedom of the 90s-2000s before cell phones, internet tracking, fake music, plastic surgery and influencers. Kids in this new generation will never understand the level of freedom we had.
And we need to keep it at that way : don’t ever surrender to the WHO and the WEF agenda !
There was definitely plastic surgery lol. My mom worked at a cosmetic surgery center all through the 90s
Your people are hilarious. All you know is what you experienced and probably high school or college. Do you think the 90s were free? You should’ve seen the 60s and the 70s. I did high school in the 80s and college. Was a kid in the 70s. Makes the 90s look like a joke. The 90s we had cable TV and the Internet. Cable TV was basically new in the 80s. The Internet was sterile an obscure thing used by the government and universities called ARPAnet.
truth hits so deep
I get seriously emotional when I think about how deeply I love 90’s music
So do I
80s and 90s.
So do I.
I feel this to my absolute core...

Everything about this is beautiful. The 90s taught me all I know about music - if it doesn't evoke emotion, it doesn't count.
"I Will Remember You" is McLachlan's best-known song, but "Building a Mystery" has always been my favorite from her.
One of my favorites has always been her cover of "River". It's actually what led me to the rest of her music.
I was born in 82, and I’m so glad the 90s shaped and molded my teenage years. The fashion, technology, life experience, and etc. I remember watching this on MTV before school and after. Such a beautiful song and video. It was an awesome time to be a 90s teen girl.❤️😁 Shout out to all the 90s kids and teenagers!
❤❤❤❤❤❤
all generations feel that way about their generation...
82 baby here too🎉
Awesome
High school for me started 1991. Graduated college 1999. I couldn't have asked for a better decade to experience that.
I love the imagery with him collecting the lights
It all went downhill after this era 😓
Yes. By 2005 roughly. I'd agree. This genre, alternative rock and country.
ALL of it!
Even rap!
The genre of 90s poetry lady alt rock has been slept on for too long. This vibe is coming back full power.
no it isn't
The 90's were so diverse. Clothing, music, attitude and life in general. So much talent from every single music genre. It's impossible to put it in words how the 90's shaped an entire generation. The world was full of opportunities.
I’m Gen Z but I’m emotionally attached to 90’s trance.

I cant explain how much I loved the 90s and the Alternative era. Women like Sarah, Paula Cole, Jewel, Alanis, Cheryl Cole ect. This music was so beautiful and deep!!
Vanessa Rose Tori Amos! Sheryl Crow, Joan Osborne!
When MTV actually had music on it.
Paula Cole lmao. Man, that armpit hair... I remember when I was a kid singing "I don't wanna wait, to buy a new razor because my armpit hair is really long."
Bjork And Enya ...
Vanessa Rose hey remember Lilith Concert? I always go at it with people who think 🤔 that the 90’s were better then the 80’s. I’ll give these talented women their due, but THE 80’s WILL ALWAYS RULE!
Good lord, she's so freakin beautiful in this video! Her make-up artist should've won an award that year for capturing the best woman's 90's look right there. Sorry but it's 1:30 am, I miss the 90's and I'm bored. :/

I feel bad for all the people born in recent years… They will never know how good the world was in the 1990s. I am so nostalgic for simpler times. I had the best childhood!
The 90's, the most iconic decade.
Seriously? Look at some other decades… you’re too focused!
The 60s and the 70s and the 80s were infinitely better and more iconic than the 90s. Probably the greatest 10 year. In music was 65 to 75. People that were around in the 70s and 80s thought the 90s kind of sucked that was until we hit the 2000s and went. Oh my God! The only great thing about the 90s was it was the last decade of good music. But even the 90s one as good as the 60s/70s/80s.
Yes, yes it was.. you had to feel it to live it. ❤️❤️
@@hippywytch1
lol not even close. The 60s, 70s & 80s were ALL superior & iconic.
The only people that think the 90s were ahead of those other decades are people that were kids or high school college in the 90s. Facts don’t care about your feelings. It’s objectively true that the 90s were the last great decade from music and movies and art, etc. but the 90s were nothing compared to previous decades.
How many great TV shows have been about the 90s? None.
How I met your mother. That 70s show. Stranger things. Movies like 8 mm. These are all about the 70s 70s and the 80s. Most iconic television shows were from the 50s through the 80s. TV and music was a joke in the 90s compared to previous decades. But I will admit the 90s were the last where we had real music. this is an opinion I mean they can prove that she can document this. Only people of a certain age think the 90s were great. No one from previous generations whatever put the 90s even close to where you people do.
@@nedhill1242 To each their own....
She's as beautiful as her music. As a teenager in the 90s I sure do miss how versatile everything was. Especially the music
The 90s was a really good decade for female artists. I guess Sarah was at the top of the list although there were dozens more of unique and creative wormen of many styles.
I was born in 1982 growing up in a time with no cell phones or excelled technology all we had was the excitement of our favorite song on the radio. We played until the street lights came on, we faught after school, and some of us like the generations before went off to war. Music like this makes me feel at 41 I am still trying to find my personal mystery which will hopefully let my family understand why I still act like a 90s kid.
Turn your hat around straight bro
If your family has an issue with that, shame on them.
She has always had this sense of darkness to her music that I can't escape from. It's beautiful and mysterious.
It's like a Gothic novel in song form.
yeah. her whole persona usta do it for me.

Can't live in the past or the future all we have is right now. So live like you want to.
If you grew up in this era, Sarah McLachlan and this song were a defining part of the time and women's music. All her contemporaries were phenomenally talented too. This song takes me back to a simpler, better time. I even bought the single. When I hear this I'm instantly a teenager again.
Paula Cole, Fiona Apple, Meredith Brooks, Alanis…I could go on.
So much talent.
So true.. I closed my eyes n as a teenager magically reached my bedroom with mtv playing this soulful song
Alanis morset, jewel and Sarah are greats. GWEN was too just a little different vibe.
The pure emotion that went into music in the 90s dwarfs current music in comparison.
Because emotion is often pushed aside now for pure lust and desire.
90s destroys all music that came after it ;-)

My favorite thing about this video is that SHE stalks HIM
The 90's made the 60's look like the 50's
I remember a night long ago, around Christmas, I heard my first “Sarah” song and I melted. I was driving home from a mall in Dallas finishing my Christmas shopping. Home was in the boonies at the time, Frisco, it had just started to grow. Anyway, I heard one of her songs, turned around and went back to the music store and bought the CD, took it home and hubby loved her as much as I did. Little did we know I would be selecting another one of her songs a few years later to play at his funeral, yep Angel. To this day, when I need a therapeutic cry I get in my car and listen and ball my eyes out. I miss him and realize only now how much he meant to me.
Another great song we played at his service was “Silent Lucidity” by Queensryche.
Sorry for your loss.....

1997 was IMO just such a cool fun year to be alive, I'm only 35 but I remember being 11-12 and just riding bikes outside playing street hockey, just whatever we could do to stay busy. 97 had some fuckin incredible music also, heartfelt emotional songs that were deep and we had some if the best artists from this one here to Natalie Imbruglia, Goo goo dolls, ever clear etc. 90s was the best end of discussion,
This is so much better than the so called artist of today.
The first time I heard this song in 1997 I had just come home from work, it was around midnight and I was tired as heck so I readied myself to go to bed. As I was lying down I decided to put on my headphones and turned my walkman on to listen to music before closing my eyes and Building a mystery came on and I heard it all the way through and I was like wow, suddenly all that tiredness disappeared and I fell asleep humming this song and I still had it on my mind when I woke up the next day. Fellas this is the kind of music the 90's produced and Sarah Mc Lauglin, well no need to tell you the impact she had in all of us. G-d bless all who lived thru the nineties.
Went on a date with a beautiful woman on April 15, 1999, ate Mexican food, took her to a Karaoke bar, drank Dr. McGillicutty at another bar, brought her to my house, put on this CD and lit candles......... her clothes just fell off. The Best of Times❣️
90's was the best time to be a teenager. I loved every moment and do not have a regret.
I couldn't describe it better…
Being a teenager in the 90’s and listening to the best music was great and life just seemed so much easier not only for teenagers but for parents and most people. Life was so much more adventurous and fun and came without so much of the worries, struggles and fears that comes with today’s times. I admit I do love the phones and technology we have today but not having all of that then is a lot of what made the 90’s and especially the enjoyment of great music and the artists. I could definitely go back to those days and times. The memories of riding around with friends listening to this music was some of the best days. I think a lot of people our age will agree and remember the 90’s for a life time and especially when you hear a great song from those days it just brings it all back and makes me smile.

Every generation seems to feel that way haha I think there’s a few cashing in and a few pouring their hearts out. The ones that resonate 20+ years later with their fanbase are the latter. Seek them out like you did as a teenager

You woke up screaming aloud
A prayer from your secret God
You feed off our fears
And hold back your tears, oh
Give us a tantrum
And a know-it-all grin
Just when we need one
When the evening's thin
You're a beautiful
A beautiful fucked up man
You're setting up your
Razor wire shrine
'Cause you're working
Building a mystery
Holding on and holding it in
Yeah, you're working
Building a mystery
And choosing so carefully
Ooh, you're working
Building a mystery
Holding on and holding it in
Yeah you're working
Building a mystery
And choosing so carefully
Yeah, you're working
Building a mystery
Holding on and holding it in
Oh, yeah, you're working
Building a mystery
And choosing so carefully
You're building a mystery
Thanks so much for the lyrics 😘
Thank you so much for the lyrics to "Building a Mystery". It allowed me to enjoy this glorious song (that I obsessed over when it first came out -- yup I'm that old).
Btw -- Ashlyn Wheeler is a beautiful name, but I really really want your name to be Vivid. That would be so very cool.
What is that mystery I wonder? None of you know what this song is really about. Your distorted emotions and memories won’t unlock what is really missing inside of each of you. What a grand vain vile illusion. Want to See past the illusion? The fulfillment of ALL the answers you seek=PETRA. 1 Cor 10:4
I love the line “can you look out the window without your shadow getting in the way”. That pretty much says it all, doesn’t it?
@@magen2271 I think she literally means that they are trying hard to look dark and mysterious. At least, that’s how I heard it
Sarah's definition of beautiful
One of the most iconic voices in music and the single most beautiful woman in music for the past 20 years.
Be still, my beating heart ❤️
She is singing about a sociopath. She had to have been in a relationship with one, went through an entirely new Hell that no friend or family could understand-but she ripped herself away, and in doing so, made her so much more grounded, wiser & stronger. Brilliant & beautiful
This song is and always has been incredible. It’s honestly one of my favorite songs ever; The vocals on this are a thing of surreal beauty.
You right big time. this is a real good song.
Pray for the the Lord before I come to destroy every thing you thought you know
Just picked up her live CD and damn is it good! Very talented singer and writer!
I would listen to this on cool summer nights in Seattle. Watching trees and stars go by with the windows down. The 90s were magical!
an amazing time...
@@zetasong Sarah Mclachlan Building A Mystery is one of my favorite song
🤟🏼
I like you
Ditto!
One of the best songs I've ever listened to, it has a beautiful feeling❤❤
Woman is soooooo gorgeous! Beautiful voice....miss these days! Music peaked in the 90s.
Imagine coming home to Sarah McLaughlin.
It had another peak around 2005. Good artists like Natasha Bedingfield and Lifehouse. The music scene sure sucks now though. We need another peak.
The world needs more music and artists like this, rather than all the Rap and Hip Hop bullshit that's out there today. People that know how to write their own songs, play an instrument, and sing without Auto Tune and shaking a fat ass with 50 backup dancers around them to distract you from the bad talent and music they have. I miss the '80's, '90's, and prior to around '05 music, when people had great talent. Notice how you haven't seen a McDonalds commercial in 20 years that didn't have a Rap or Hip Hop theme to it to get kids to beg their parents to take them there. I hear so many kids today complain about how the music today sucks and they're now discovering stuff from the '80's and '90's, I'm glad I was there to experience it all!
+sportsterray66 Rap/Hip Hop has been around for 40 years. It's not the reason for the downfall of the music industry.
It still sucks ass!
Janaka:
~ The first Rap song to be especially successful in the U.S. was "Rapture" by the band Blondie - , and that was in 1981. Rap was largely unknown to mainstream audiences before then. "Rapture" was also the first Rap song to be played on the then brand-new cable-channel MTV. That means that (as-of my writing this comment in late-2017) the musical-genre of Rap has been noteworthy for about 36 years. Finally, here is a "link" to the Wikipedia page for the song "Rapture", which contains information to validate my claims: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapture_(Blondie_song)
Memories of 1997 I remember the first time I heard this song was in the early morning at the crack of dawn in November at a stop light getting ready to pull into a jack in the box excited because I wasn’t headed to school, but a five hour trip to San Antonio to compete in a cross country regional meet. I remember when this song came on I just laid back closed my eyes and enjoyed it because it sounded so perfect at the moment without a worry in the world.
Sarah, I'm not sure you understand how much this song means to me. I lost my Father, who was my whole world, about a year and a half ago. This song describes him perfectly and has now become our connection between worlds. Whenever I hear this song, and I hear it often now, I know he is right there next to me; helping me and guiding me. I cannot thank you enough for making this possible.
Ashley, my sincerest condolences on losing your father. I lost my closest friend and mentor Kurt Wagner, on the 31st of January, 2015.
Ironically, that's the same date as my brother's wedding anniversary.
My closest friend Kurt Wagner dedicated 30-plus years as a decorated US Federal Marshal under US President Ronald Reagan. He truly served and protected the public from multiple criminals who broke the law. He was a true hero and gentleman that passed away in Bradenton, Florida too soon.
He left behind a daughter and granddaughter in Bradenton, Florida. I really miss him. So I'm truly grateful for this song.
I haven't seen this video in ages, and have heard it just on the radio since at least 2001. Sarah is absolutely beautiful though. This is no face for radio ever!!
Thanks for your love and support
I forgot all about Sarah Mclachlan!
She was really good🎶🎶
Love it... I was 12 and now I'm 38, still my favorite...
Sarah has said that this is a song about putting on a facade to hide ones insecurities, but I've always felt like it was about a very specific person. I don't know who, but it just always struck me as a song about one person in particular rather than something more general.
Sarah's a true artist. Writes and plays her own music (at least guitar and piano that I know of -- a real musician), has a beautiful voice, and of course, she's gorgeous on top of all that. It's funny, I actually appreciate this song more now than I did back then. It takes me back to a different time. Man, how different things were then.
Songs like this make me miss middle/high school. Back when music was really and raw emotion really showed in it
I wish I had realized how lucky I was to be young in the 90's. Wish I could go back. This time right now is garbage.
The 90s was powerfully emotional.
Oh my god... I haven't listened to Sarah Maclachlan for so many years, I feel like I'm rediscovering part of my soul I'd forgotten about. I can't help crying.
she's incredible! I did a cover of one of Sarah's songs Angel and it would mean a lot if you could listen to it. It's a very special song for me. czcams.com/video/2XTQrHdJglo/video.html
