- This shows the physical height of every English monarch since Edward the Confessor.
I saw that there were no videos on the heights of the English monarchs and I decided to make this as an extra video.
I'll be back uploading on the main channel soon!
Interesting how a lot of the modern ones are on the shorter side compared to the others
The inbreeding having it's impact I guess
Not sure what you mean given that 8 out of 10 of the shortest ones are from 300 years ago or more.
Or maybe the old ones were lying out their ass lmao
I heard People actually became shorter into the 1700s and again around the industrial revolution and height started to rise again into the 1900s. and after WW2. I heard People size went up throughout History to do with living in more towns and less excess to good food. I heard People.

It's kind of ironic that out of 43 monarchs shown in this video 13 (almost one third) of them were shorter than Napoleon, whom the British often mocked for supossedly being just 5'2 ft (in reality he was 5'7).
Every monarch after James I never reached 6'0 or any height taller than it
13 out of 43 isn’t really a high number, especially since women are smaller on average anyway.
The shortest one (Edward V) was just a boy, he died at age 12. Which I guess is still quite tall for that age, though he was said to be quite sickly.

Indian rulers were as tall as 7' even in Alexander's time.
@@marypetrie930 A myth? its common sense. A lot of people suffered from malnutrition especially the peasants, so they could reach their full potential in height
The Normans (and Vikings) muck like modern Scandinavians have always been renowned for their height… partly due to natural selection, and partly due to the very high protein diet. Their average lifespan, though, was significantly less than Southern Europeans.
No wonder there were persistent (and possibly well-founded) rumours that Edward IV was a bastard.

Charles I seems a head shorter than the rest...
1:11 huh Harold godwinson is cursed
Edward V was 12. Also, where did you receive this data?
Edward V disappeared so we don’t know for sure how old he was when he died.
Richard III was about 5'5" due to his puberty-onset scoliosis (this chart is wrong for him and also shows a false Shakespearean image of him with kyphosis--he was not a hunchback!) that wouldn't have been publicly known until he was stripped naked, humiliated, flung over a horse and displayed for three days in Leicester before his hasty, naked burial in a dirt hole under the choir of Greyfriars that was too short for him with his wrists still tied. He would've stood 5'8" without it, which was average height for the time. His brother Edward IV will stand as the tallest monarch at 6'4" until the future William V ties with him.
One of the men whom Richard III took down in his final charge on-foot with his axe was the unhorsing of jousting champion John Cheyne, who was a giant of 6'8" with 21" femurs (this man had previously been in jousting tournaments alongside Edward IV's brother-in-law Anthony Woodville), before cutting down Henry VII Tudor's standard bearer William Brandon and making it to within yards of non-combatant Tudor cowering behind his guards.
Richard III was accused of many things, but Tudor-era chroniclers never took the bravery of his final charge from him until Shakespeare. His slender build (nearly caused a gender-bender moment on the forensic autopsy table, due to his gracile bones and feminine pelvis), small statue and lack of brute strength was part of how impressive he fought regardless. The only previous sign of his scoliosis before being stripped naked and displayed was one shoulder being slightly higher than the other that was barely noticeable under the clothing of the era. It's thought that probably only a few individuals ever knew about until then, probably including his wife Anne Neville and best friend Francis Lovell, Viscount Lovell ("The catte, the ratte and Lovell our dogge rulyth all Englonde under a hogge"--loyal to him until the end), who had been a fatherless ward of Warwick the Kingmaker's alongside him when his puberty-onset changes to his spine would've first begun.
Edward IV's height and later gluttonous obesity (which 6'2" Henry VIII all certainly inherited) played a big part in rumors that he was really the son of Blaybourne the Archer of Rouen instead of Richard, Duke of York. These rumors were alleged by Warwick the Kingmaker, Edward IV's own traitorous, later-attainted brother George, Duke of Clarence and were also widespread in France. Apparently, Richard, Duke of York really favored Richard III in appearance and diminutive height.
Edward IV's 6'4" height was measured when his tomb was opened in the early 18th century; he was still decomposing in a puddle of bodily fluids and his brown pageboy was still attached to his skull.
Though George may have had an even better rumor during his final downfall, that of Edward having committed bigamy with his plight troth to Eleanor Butler prior to his marriage with Elizabeth Woodville. George was indeed thrown into the Tower of London (where he was drowned in a butt of Malmsey wine in 1478) alongside Bishop Robert Stillington, who would emerge just five years later in 1483 while the uncrowned Edward V's (Prince in the Tower, who also seems to have needed frequent medical attention from physician John Argentine and appears to have been sickly somehow, while Richard of Shrewsbury did not) coronation plans were already underway (Richard III actually was already having coins minted, so it doesn't seem he had planned taking the throne for himself all along), only to speak before Parliament and cause Titulus Regius to be passed, which declared the Woodville marriage to be bigamous and all of her children with Edward bastards.
Dominic Mancini (who did not speak English and was working for the French) reported George as bringing up Blaybourne again, but it seems with Stillington's imprisonment alongside that George had gotten a hold of something even more threatening to Elizabeth Woodville than Warwick's old Blaybourne rumor. It's notable that mother Cecily Neville and Richard III argued for George to be spared (don't learn anything from Shakespeare!), while Woodville is believed to have been most strongly for her husband's fratricidal execution.
George's attainder (which barred his tragic children Margaret Pole and Edward of Warwick from the throne, but they were still threats to the Tudors and subsequently executed especially horrifically by them) for treason was rather belated, given the real treason he committed had been all the way back in 1470 with Warwick, only to rejoin his brothers when Warwick turned to allying himself with Margaret of Anjou (who lest we forget, not only put his father's head on a spike, but the Sons of York's father and brother's heads on spikes right alongside), not the extrajudicial murder of lady-in-waiting Ankarette Twynyho, whom he claimed had poisoned his wife, Isabel Neville, who had died of childbed fever in 1476. Along with being denied two marriage opportunities by Edward, including marrying the eventual mother of the Habsburg Empire, Mary of Burgundy (made fatherless just two weeks after Isabel's death with Charles the Bold's gruesome demise at the Battle of Nancy, and whose stepmother was his sister Margaret, Duchess of Burgundy, whose favorite brother was George, but ended up choosing Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian von Habsburg), George's end was a pretty rapid spiral after Isabel's death.
Titulus Regius was part of Richard III's 1484 Parliament which also included many reforms before his time such as banning his brother's benevolence taxes, commanding that all laws be written in English (instead of French or Latin) so the common man could understand, strengthening the bail system so someone couldn't be thrown in jail to rot without trial, stopping others from seizing the property of someone awaiting trial and making it harder to stack juries with poor illiterates who could easily be bribed and threatened. All of these things were abuses of the nobility against the common person. Richard also made a notable exception for the importation of books in regards to foreign tariffs. Indeed, Richard III's book collection (these were not the bejeweled, illuminated picture books that many nobles collected) with his writing in the margins are his only belongings that still exist, thanks to Margaret Beaufort taking them for herself. One of them was the heretical John Wycliffe Bible translated into English.
Titulus Regius was never actually repealed by Henry VII, despite him needing it to be in order to marry the bastardized Elizabeth of York, as that would've meant reading it publicly; instead he commanded all copies of it be destroyed (he missed one). It is likewise one of the pieces of evidence that Richard III was *not* attempting to marry his niece, along with the Tudors having destroyed all the Portuguese marriage negotiation correspondence (the English half turned up in Portugal!) for Elizabeth of York to marry Manuel, Duke of Beja (later Manuel I of Portugal) and for Richard III to marry Saint Joanna of Portugal (who wished to be a nun and only agreed to marry Richard if he survived Bosworth). Polydore Vergil under direction of Henry VII is known to have destroyed documents from Richard III's reign by the cartload.
