Thanks for watching, from all of us at Matt's off-road recovery! - Auta a dopravní prostředky
The Banana deserves a 3 month spa day and a total makeover. It's been reliable and functional for years on probably 1/25th of the build budget & time and then it gets publicly humiliated as a thanks. Poor banana - we still love you!
I think like another poster said, despite it's failure to make points, it's still done it far longer and with far less fanfare so it's still the winner of the bunch
@@MattsOffRoadRecovery I'm guess upgraded cooling and some suspension work are in the plans? Maybe even upgraded lighting? Or is it gonna be a whole new engine? I have been shocked at the size vehicles that Jeep has rescued. On a side note it looks like your dogs pretty much have it made. They probably have it better than you do.
Yeah the Banana has done some amazing stuff over the years. The Morrvair though, that's a classy build - 1000 lbs heavier and no more ground pressure, and with built in winch etc. For snatch recoveries, that extra weight is going to give it the edge.
The one you didn't measure was the ramp breakover - that's one drawback with the longer wheelbase; more chance to get stuck on the crest of steep dunes.
Stroker kit for the 4.0 would make the Banana a beast.
@@lanceltn8979 my plan on my 4.0 jeep has always been stroker and the low pressure turbo kit from banks, but that is because my jeep lives at 1 mile+ in elevation and when camping/running trails I am going up from here. Boost helps make up for the thin air.
The fact that the XJ has been pulling vehicles twice its weight out of mud, snow, and sand says everything that needs saying.
Some way, way more than twice it's weight.
Yeh, and its kinda like comparing a 6 cylinder s10, to a v8 silverado. The fact that the banana didn't get completely smoked is a testament to how much a smaller wheelbase matters off road in a lot of situations. If you removed every test that had to do with horsepower and weight the banana would have it. I think Matt needs to find himself a v8 4.7 ho out of a o2 Wj overland to stuff in that old girl. She'd be putting similar horsepower to the wheels as the corvair, and run the tests again.
the xj will always be my fav do-everything-year-round vehicle.
You got that right! That jeep has more heart and soul than that corvair or whatever it is there will ever have!
I’d buy a xj as a lil trip truck any day that’s coming from a Chevy hillbilly
You just annihilated every "legitimate" car or truck review/comparisons with this video. I loved all the geeked out info of interior measurements, dyno, side by side tests and terrain test. FIVE STARS!
Banana is a beast, despite been smaller in size and having a smaller engine, never quit. That's why I love xjs and the 4.0
I'd love an xj but I don't fit. My shoulder sits past the B pillar and my knees are in the dash.
They were only gettting 105 HP on the dyno? The 4.0 liter I-6 on the XJ is *supposed* to have 190 hp...
@@CurmudgeonExtraordinaire Parasitic loss. The 190hp for the High Output 4.0 is at the crank. Once you send that power through an automatic transmission, a transfer case and 35 inch mud terrains (which are significantly larger than stock tires), you are going to see a significant loss in power getting to the ground.
@@knivesinedc -- It would be interesting to see what a stock XJ would do on that same dyno test... I suspect that the larger tire size could probably be compensated with by way of appropriate gearing to get it back to whatever the stock XJ would have gotten. I guess if he was curious, he could put a set of original XJ tires on it and do a baseline test.
@@knivesinedc Which, for the purpose of the build, can prove beneficial at certain times, and not so much at other times.
1 Point to Max for fully sending it into the Morrvair
**& I THOUGHT LADY WAS THE OLDEST /// MAX IS GETTING REALLY GRAY ON HIS SNOOT!!!**
Hey guys, Banana didn't die yet!
Max made his choice morrvair for the win
Lady just looked at Matt like " are you stupid?"
Oh Max!!🐶❤
The Banana built this channel...100 points for the Banana. I really hope you put some love into the Banana now. Love the channel and really hope the Banana stays.
Ls swap on the banana
I would love to see a Cummins R2.8 crate engine put in the Banana..!!
LS swap and do the suspension!! We will watch that build for sure! And fix the god forsaking overheating. Lol.
Yes, upgrades for the Banana are in order!!
@@oncypresspond6946 i'd love to see that I6 keep going at it
Once again I am simply stunned at how useful the Banana is as a working truck. It wins the work output by cost of the truck ratio by orders of magnitude.
Awesome video, awesome comparison! One more important comparison I think you missed, cost. Matt did briefly mention the suspension, but the banana did almost everything almost as good as moorvair at (what I'm guessing) a fraction of the cost to build. So one more win for banana!
From what I can tell the banana is basically a stock Jeep Cherokee. So basically whatever the purchase cost for a Jeep Cherokee is plus maybe $5000
The Banana is what brought us to this channel nd made it the success it is. It will always hold that special place in all our hearts. Looking forward to the restoration and upgrade of the Banana while the Moorvair is hard at work.
🍻
Totally Agree, full total restoration rebuild boosting everything with Built in navigation systems and UHF radios -CB radios. boosted radiators.
The Banana is the reason the Morrvair exists.
I don't watch this channel for the moorvair.
I agree I've even thought about building 1 myself
The banana has been doing all these recovery’s with 105 WHP. Lol. Goes to show that skill will go a long way.
Also Torque ;)
the 4.0 i6 is about 180hp new the banna is probably got a nice dirty air filter and the style of dyno gave it way lower hp than it has though hes loosing hp through gearing and tire size. the corvair is probably even more powerful if they use the dyno style that bolts to the hubs
Yea, all that tire kills hp and trq on a dyno but it made for a good comparison. Its not like he's trying to tune them...
Gearing!
Seems like everyone is wheeling with these newer Cherokees. It's like everyone forget about the original Jeep Cherokees and no one drives them anymore!! When I am mean original I mean 84-89 the AMC era where the 87 got the original 4.0
One of my favorite videos so far. Even my kids watched with me. It's clear that the Morrvair is more capable and more beastly, but the Banana is now sentimental to us all - so once can only imagine how special it is to Matt and the crew. I always describe this channel as "a towing company in Utah who does remote, off-road sketchy recoveries utilizing an old XJ and alot of skill" So the Banana definitely has to stay, but I'm glad to see the Morrvair also. It was an incredible build to watch, it's an amazing machine, and I'm partial to the Chevy 5.3 that powers it. Great motor, great drive train you built, incredible vehicle. Thanks for the great content!
I missed this video. What your doing with the RudyCon now makes great sense. The one thing that as a Father brought a tear to my eye was the obvious love and respect Rudy has for Matt. From the race helmet from the 70's to painting his boot orange, I was tickled to death. Truly great stuff. I envy the father son relationship you guys have. You are both very lucky!
The Morrvair is pretty awesome in every way, but there's a certain affection for the Banana.
What’s your vote who comes to get you on your next adventure?
My answer right there
I was rooting for the 🍌
@@localcarvideosmore6655 me too
@@CTXSLPR well as long as I get rescued, I'm not really picky. 🤔😉
I'll be waiting for the day when the Banana has to rescue the Morrvair
I don't see that happening unless it gets rolled over
If it doesn't happen, they're not trying hard enough. If you never get it stuck, do you really know it's limits?
@@dustinmeier9753 That's a philosophy for wheeling, not a recovery rig.
the probability is very high, most of the time its not about the performance but about the situation, every car gets stuck sooner or later 😁😁😁
For the tire grip area , they are ovals: A=pi*a/2*b/2
Morrvair: 119.5
Banana: 104.1
Doesn't matter, each where at 8psi
Was wondering if when calculating psi per vehicle, I never saw you mention that you had 4 tires supporting the weight, was that figured in?
😂 All the math to figure the Lbs Per Square Inch. It was cool to confirm, but the psi of your tires is also the pressure on the ground. The key is having a large enough tire to be rated to support the weight of your vehicle at the desired inflation. Tire manufacturers make "Load Index Charts" for tire sizes that tell you the proper inflation given your vehicle's weight and top speed you wish to drive.
if you really want to get accurate, then measure out each contact patch seperately instead of counting the gaps as part of the area
@@andrewhaataja6074 the math was to determine the contact patch size, because tire pressure alone doesnt tell you anything. 😊
Just recently found your channel and have been watching ever since. Fantastic job of filming and editing makes a big difference from some of the others. I like the way you are not afraid to call for help from competitors, you let nothing stand in the way of getting a customer rescued. Your whole family is great. Ed and his forecasts. Lizzie and her welding and fearlessness, like when she went on the plane recovery and then, because she has an appointment, just walks down the mountain and out to a road. Keep the videoed coming, can’t get enough!’
"probably why the brake hoses are breaking, because we use them for limiting straps." 🤣🤣
I laughed my ass off at that one myself. I've done lots of sketchy things like that in my daily drivers.
That's super sketchy! I wouldn't drive it after having a solid front axle hang off the brake lines 🤯
Lol
Hey Matt, I want to see that GoPro winch perspective from now on!
@@RJ_Cormac no balls! 🙂
" It's just a machine " .. " It's just an imamate object " .. no one who's put countless miles on a vehicle that's been their reliable and constant companion for many years and on many adventures .. ever ever thinks that .. good for you Matt
Why I can't stomach the idea of sending a vehicle to a junk/salvage yard unless it's been so smashed it can't be fixed.
Tell WhistlinDiesel that lol
I love how Rudy is in the back painting his boot and just lays the print down
Great channel, entertaining videos and, as others have often said, Matt & team are just good, salt of the earth people! More importantly, they are good CZcams role models that never trash people for making dumb mistakes behind the wheel or make fun of their vehicle / brand choices. (all 4x4s are cool). Even your viewers are nice folks - for instance in almost 3,400 comments not one viewer made a comment aboout a Ford being used as dead weight in the sand recovery test. I think I need to subscribe.
Time for the banana to be shown some love with a host of upgrade parts, as that old workhorse has already earned its’ keep; whereas the moorvair hasn’t yet. Chrysler/Jeep should sponsor the channel and donate a hellcat engine/trans/ecu for the Jeep.
yea baby!
Yup edlebrock makes a head for these 4.0s and whipple makes a supercharger as well that 4.0 will be a monstrosity with just those 2 upgrades put in 4 hole or even 6 hole injectors maybe a cam and wowsers man they're a fucking blast
Came to post this
Shouldn’t use shitty new Jeep parts that inline 6 cylinder hes already got in there is good
Putting a big motor in the Banana would remove half of the purpose - sometimes enough is enough.
The Morrvair/ Banana tire tracks are perfect logos for the backs of T-Shirts
I second this for a new shirt idea
+tee-shirt
Stumbled onto your channel with the Prius episode. It never ceases to amaze me what people drive off road, both vehicles and tires. I have heard several say you are the reason they are there. You are the reason I won't be there. As a farm girl from NE TX now in PHX area, I know my limits and draw the line at sand. You have the patience of Job and an awesome crew. Keep putting out the videos and "Get 'em out".
Great comparison, can’t wait to see the upgrades you do on the Banana!!! Thanks again for all the pointers on y’all’s recoveries.
The shadows of the Morrvair tires during the night comparison from above made it look like a monster truck.
That underglow at night is awesome from the drone!!
The Yellow Banana definitely deserves to be in the Matt's Off-road Recovery Hall of Fame!!
What a great comparison and I must admit I am a Moorvair fan coz it's a beast but some of the results were really surprising considering the power difference between the two vehicles, the banana did not disgrace itself. 100 points to Matt and the crew for bringing us this video.
I freakin died when Max when full send into that bumper! 🤣😂
Pretty shocking that the Banana has been so effective towing with so little HP. I guess gearing and tires really makes all the difference!
Technique and tools (yankum rope)
It's all about the driver man
Best quote yet!! "if your not rubbing the fender your leaving some flex on the table." 😂 Love it!
That was a great "competition!" The Moorvair has a little more style going down the road, and definitely gets high marks as a head turner, but The Banana has a purpose. It's all about the team, right?
I don't know how the CZcams algorithm popped your videos onto my feed, but I watch every one. You guys are awesome, and your rigs are super cool. Keep up the good work!
Those tire prints would make great prints on the back of Tee shirts
The Banana will always be the best in our hearts.
Can probably build something like six or nine Banana's for the cost of one Morrvair.
The Banana is the reason the Morrvair exists.
Loved this video! Can’t wait for the final product after both are fully built!!
It's weird after watching both your channels for over a year now, and now getting into the older stuff where you're together. Go dad! Go Rudy! May the best ginger win.
Rudy painting his boot in the background 😂
I wanted to see his lb/sq in for comparison.
Hahaha same
I really wish you would do a series on fixing up the banana 🍌. She deserves the rebuild.
You spelled upgrades wrong.. Why rebuild, when you can improve? ;-)
@@n9mxq My opinion is that the banana 🍌 is perfect the way she is. Like fixing the cooling system and suspension. Upgrade and they're just building another Morevair.
@@johnschell7514 Still upgrades.. But yes, the cooling needs work, and a few tweaks to the suspension is all I meant also..
Especially the broken interior bits and headliner.
@@MrErichonda30 nah, that's character
Best channel on CZcams. Good people with solid content. Thank you
Impeccable build quality on display and also I have to say they are built job specific but can do all jobs on offer just with their own personality. I have loved stumbling onto your channel Matt.
I vote for a Matt's off road shirt with that tire print on the back!
Hello Josh i like your comment how are you doing?
I'd have one with Rudy's boot on it 😂
Good one.. agreed
I agree
Aaaand insert milestar plug here lol not a sponsor? Well when that tshirt comes out, they will be lol
Max "Don't be silly, I'm still gonna send it!".
Also their reaction when asked to get back out of the Jeep. "What? That's not how this works...." LOL
Huh?? But we haven't gone anywhere yet??
I remember a video that I saw on Facebook once with Matt and Jaymie. Someone asked about the Banana and Matt said something about he will give everything that he owns to keep it, so I’m sure that he will keep it for the rest of his life. It’s not just a car and you can really see and hear when he is talking about it. Wish that more people would care about what they have instead of just buying something new…
The first episode I watched before I subscribed was the recovery of that pickup (@36 degrees), And I was amazed at what these people can accomplish. Since then I have watched most of the episodes on this channel...in one week😉😉😉😉😉😉...I love you guys and all your hard work!!!!...🇿🇦
Matt: sure i did enjoy watch this! You forgot to compare easyness of filling fuel thou😂
Extra poin for the banana on ease of fueling

One for every time they've had to refuel it.
The simple fact that both rigs survived the beating is testament to your ability to design and build!
Both of them are such awesome rigs to watch get it done! Can't wait for the offroad wrecker build!
Props to the Banana, You’ve rescued so many folks with that rig and I’ve selfishly enjoyed every single video. Love the new Morevaire but the Banana is a tried and tested faithful companion. Great vid, love your stuff, stay safe , keep up the great work.
This episode broke the last record on the Funometer scale. This is a new level of fun. all team members had fun, viewers had fun, great day out.
best description ever (fun-o-meter)
The morrvair is the young gun, full of energy and the willingness to learn and the banana is the older, wiser and more experienced!!😄 Both cool machines in their own right!!👍
Ok thought I've seen some awesomely wicked cool strangeness in my 60 years but a lifted,4x4 Corvair wagon is something I never expected to add to that list.
I love the look of the light part for the moorvair! The tires looked really cool 😎
I definitely give Max a point for enthusiasm and actually getting into Morrvair unassisted! Good boy!!!
And Lady gets a point for being smarter and letting Matt pick her up.
@@georgeorwell126 I don't think he was close any kind of serious injury. Although he's getting a bit older, dogs are incredibly durable. I've had and have dogs and I've dealt with more than my fair share of injuries, most of which I saw happen.
I'm not sure what's more incredible that the banana IS only 105 hp or what been able to do with it and it's 105 hp.
@The Weapon Collection exactly
It's 105 at the (gigantic oversized and underpressure) tires. I'd bet on street tires and non-beadlocked wheels it'd run near 180hp. But he uses kinetic energy to his advantage always.
Yeah, after a lot of years and miles horses tend to escape lol. In this case, quite a few have left.
@@jdoosh4797 na factory its 190hp at the crank ALL of you seem to be forgetting this.. factory ratings are crank ratings not wheel HP, most vehicles the drive train loss is around 15-25% depending on the setup., with drivetrain loss, the 4.0 are all mostly pushing around 140hp to the wheel or so, They are guttless pigs, with him being at 105 hp he has over a 45% power loss. I own 4 Jeeps, the 4.0 is slow even on a stock Grand Cherokee. And people claim its a torqy engine, i mean 225ft lbs at 3300rpm at the crank, i guess thats torqy ? The same year 5.2 and 5.9 liter v8's had over 100-125ft lbs more than the 4.0 and they were at 3000k rpm for peak torque. I own a 5.9 Grand Cherokee, and its completetly blows the 4.0 away in every aspect. Both are equally as reliable, i honestly dont know why he picked a cherokee XJ for his companies towing vehicle when a grand cherokee with the 5.9 liter v8 would have been a much better choice.
@@jeepsblackpowderandlights4305 Drivetrain loss is a static number not a percentage. It should be putting more around the 110-115hp range. The reason he probably didn't use a GC is because it's far to big and heavy for the hp it's putting out. Not to mention the unibody is even worse for yanking and towing. The 5.9 Limited is the only exception and it's not much better P/W than the other ones.
THIS IS WAY better than tv you guys put alot of work into your videos we all enjoy them, thank you
So much fun! Thanks for this video. I loved the running around space comparison
Rudy is so awesome with another of his classic comments, said quietly and with feigned seriousness..."I love expressing my feelings..." So hilarious.
Years ago Gene Simmons from KISS had a reality show. He, son, much like Rudy, had a RAZOR wit. It Made the show.
The irony is, of course, that he expresses his feelings all the time, with side-eyes, arched eyebrows, and facetious comments like, "We're trying to eat better."
@@googgnik Rudy has definitely got the subtle humor angle nailed down. I absolutely love to see him go back and forth with Lizzie, those guys are hilarious and two of my favorite people to watch on CZcams. Gotta love Matt and his wife too, she's puts up with so much craziness from that crew of wingnuts.
Sarcasm god
This channel was originally recommended to me by a friend who said “it’s this really friendly guy who drives around in his yellow Jeep xj rescuing idiots who get stuck 😂” the morrvair is a simply incredible build. So much fun following the progress and getting to see it done.
agreed on everything except that they are idiots. anyone can get stuck. the people who call are smart enough to not make it worse, because there have definitely been times on this channel where one more wrong move could've done way more damage or even death.
@@cameron6471 oh for sure. I agree. I’ve had to call for help my fair share of times.

I guess it is kinda randomly asking but does anyone know a good site to stream newly released series online?
Have been watching your videos for over a year now and LOVE All your videos! Amazing job editing your vids! You guys trully deserve all the reviews in the world for helping out people daily!
We loved it! The dog not quite having the right amount of HOPS was hilarious. We may or may not have watched Lady not make it more than once lol. Reminds me of my lab in her older days, lifting her in and out of my pickup lol
Enjoyed this video! From my perspective it was a kind of apples and oranges comparison. The Cherokee is basically a factory stock vehicle with modified suspension while the "Corvair" is a purpose-built custom chassis with a Corvair station wagon body sitting on it. A testament to factory engineering!
The engine and gearbox may be stock in the banana, but the suspension axles and diffs certainly arent
Ouch...I think I died a little when I heard the banana's Dyno number. Definitely the "little engine that could". Lol
Agreed
Torque is king. The horsepower numbers do not give the whole story. The 4.0 is a pretty torquie.
Loved the different leans from the judges. You guys know how to make a fun video.
Glad you have both.
But that Corvair is a work of art. Beautiful.
Man that Morrvair just might be the best sounding 5.3 that I've ever heard! That exhaust is sweet!
Must remember that the Jeep was bought stock and modified as needed, but the Morrvair was custom/purpose built. Both are awesome builds for what they are and what you intended to use them for.
The fact that the 200k+ miles hard worked Banana is so capable and workable is a tribute to all that yo guys do. I think the Banana needs some love. Would love to see you guys send that engine out for a rebuild and clean her up a little but keep it as-is. Work them together!
@@fshalor738 Also a tribute to how great XJs are. I miss my old one, an '88 Laredo.
Love that I found you guys by accident and then just randomly find my cousins Paul and James (and even Lolly!). Please tell them howdy from their cousins up north. 😂
But seriously, this is some fun, wholesome watching that makes me miss working with my dad on the job. So glad I found ya and can’t wait to see the next hairy escape!
XJ's were available as a "Police Pursuit Package" and with the stock tires actually would out handle many sports cars. Mine is stock height on oversized sway bars and 255/55/18 tires and will easily do the average freeway cloverleaf offramp at 60+mph. I do logging roads up to radio sites all the time but would never be able to do what you guys do in its current configuration. Its been very fun watching your mods on both these guys!
If Trevor can do math, on top of that awesome wiring job, he must need another raise
Matt, you, like many of us, appreciate the “Spirit” of a vehicle. Over time, the adventures they share with us, endear them to us, like family. This comparison was, in NO way, a slight to the banana. As you pointed out, it has served you, faithfully, for many years. The Moorvair is a different animal with different strengths. Thank you for sharing.
He said something about a "rebuild" and "fixing that"
Thank You for that . A fine example of the advancements in materials , Knowlage and intangables. . In all fairness they both do the job , not quite the same way
So.....I found your channel a few days ago and have been binge watching and love it ! There was one test that I think would have been a good one.....Fuel Milage....lol
I love the new Morrvair but the Banana is the little engine that could, she just chugs along always completing the job and brings you guys home safe! She certainly deserves at least an upgraded radiator for all her hard work. 🤙🏼
I feel like the banana is gonna get some crazy upgrades here pretty soon
That was some proper old school Top Gear/ Grand Tour comparisons! Just the right mix of science and ridiculousness.
Just started watching and love the content your son gives out a Ricky Gervais office vibe when he tries to b funny and doesn't hit the mark . So good keep it up
This channel has come such a long way!!! Love it!
Banana has a proven track record. +100pts.
watching this episode in my mind i think it is time for the banana to get ALL THE LOVE IT DESERVES. like if you agree
I love Max’s enthusiasm. That pup has no quit.
I’m a very loyal guy and even though the MORRVAIR is cool looking I will go with the Banana! Just like any job you need several different tools. Hopefully you can now upgrade the suspension on the Banana and give it some TLC to really compete with the MORRVAIR.
That dog in trunk issue is a simple fix... just add a custom step as part of the bumper or tucked under the bumper (slides out when needed, like how they do stairs on a camper).
good idea.
Could make a small insert for the tow hitch with a little platform to give them a better footing
I was think a u-haul-truck-style pull out ramp.
@@ADBBuild Ya, that would be the ideal thing to go with, but I assume Matt would likely want something a little more portable / less hassle kind of solution. But a ramp would of course be better than a step as animals don't even hesitate with a ramp.
This was so much fun to watch. You guys work together so well.
Loved seeing this comparison! I will always love the XJ morr, but you know why 😉 Banana gets OG points too ✅ because it paved the way for the do’s and don’ts for the MORRvair
This looked like a lot of fun and was maybe my favorite video! Besides the one I’m in of course 🤣❤️🐞
The real question is how does Rudy's Jeep compare to the Banana.
Probably worse since his jeep is still on leaf springs, but the banana has been converted to link suspension.
Yeah. Wasn't there supposed to a profile on either his jeep or the other yellow and black one?
Oh, you missed two items. 1. Money spent on each. 2. Money earned by each.
Matt stated that what went into one corner of th suspention of the MORRvair was more then the entire suspension of the Banamma (18.45) and for #2, that will take a while for the MORRvair to gat close to the number of recoveries that the Bananna has made over the years.
well said!
Morvair: 1 - All of it
Banana: 2 - All of it

Great work on this build MORR team. It blows my mind to see this much fabrication go into a project. I've always wanted to do something similar but cannot wrap my head around how you go about getting parts for something so custom😱
I'm a Brit, and we love an underdog, so I love the Banana, cos she started it all for me. The Pumpkin (Morrvair)is spectacular, but cost a hell of a lot more. Overall, I think the Banana rules, but the Morrvair benefits from a lot of investment. Both have their place and deserve respect.

A truly enjoyable video for sure. The Morrvair is a reflection of everything you have learned from the use of the Banana over the years. It is a more refined version of the Banana. I recommend that you update the Banana with improved suspension components and a power plant upgrade.
@@MattsOffRoadRecovery and do the comparison again😀
Thanks for sharing all these videos. I love your channel. Matt you and your family really are the salt of the earth. Nice job on the Morrvair
As fun as these tests are, I think the real difference is going to happen during rescues. I think the Banana might be more nimble in some very tight trails where the Morrvair will be too wide or long or heavy. And of course a custom build car will never compare with a close to stock one.
What're you on about, the Morrvair is a bone stock design from the Winder Towing factory line
