- Vic from Base Leg Aviation discusses the maintenance requirements, troubleshooting, and fixes for his Lightspeed Electronic ignition and a customer’s RV-7A and shows how to make new ignition cables. He also discusses his decision to replace his 1100 hour 6350 direct drive non-impulse coupled magneto with a 6393 direct drive non-impulse coupled magneto with a retard breaker. The extra breaker terminal allows him to add a Slick Surestart to the magneto providing the ability to start the aircraft off of that magneto if necessary.

I’ve been running dual Lightspeed CDIs (with the Flywheel pickups) for 21 years. Had a coil fail once (minor problem), but other than that a flawless system.
Another great video….Thanks Vic & Carol! Have Happy New Year!
I've got the Lightspeed/mag combo on mine -- this is really super useful info. Thanks as always!!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us
I've had a Lightspeed ignition on my airplane for 20 years +. After replacing the magneto 3 times I finally replaced the mag with another Electronic ignition. Could you go into more detail about oming the wires and coils ? Also could you provide the part number, price and where you purchased the tool to put the spark plug wire ends. I would like to add that task to my condition inspection.
Hi Michael. It appears that that tool is no longer available which is why I (Carol) did not put a source for it. Steinair has the Proscrimp Lc-372

See the newest video. Vic explains measuring ohms in the last three minutes.

Thanks video was clear ! Thanks for the Stein link, he is wonderful.
Reliability of magnetos trumps performance of electronic ignitions in my mind. I was an early beta tester of Pmags and that did not go well.
