Weirdly I am currently imagining pirates using mermaids as pets, they use a specific type horn to call them to the surface.
The pirates use sign languages with them and usually orders them to sink small ships/boats by the pirates giving them sharp metal spears to poke a hole in the small boat and watch it sink.
