Season 0 is basically a closer adaptation of the manga, which is way darker than the later series. It also wasnt originally about the specific card game we all know of, at least not in the beginning. In the manga, over the course of the story the author introduced a ton of games, some of them are pretty interesting in my opinion. At some point duel monsters came into play and that game was so fascinating to the fans, that the whole story started to revolve around this game.
Yeah, everyone basically had their own 1 or 2 games they were experts in except for the pharaoh who was the king of all of them.
The only reason kaiba stuck around after death T was because his game was the one the manga reoriented itself around, as opposed to bakura and shadi who stuck around because they were planned to be part of the overarching plot already.
Yeah. Duel monsters was already invented in this time in the story, but it wasn't focused on in Season 0
In the manga the shadow game was darker, it didn't involve cards but money and knives. before "duel monsters" became the main focus in the story, the pharaoh used to play several dangerous shadow games with his enemies, other games and even weapons were used sometimes. The readers liked the card game so much that it became the main focus of the plot.

It's interesting how the card game eventually affected the whole focus of the show. I wonder what would have been if YGO Duel Monsters never got any attention. The other thing that's interesting is how much the card game mutates. In s0 it's basically a TTRPG with cards, there's no definite rules and they kind of make up their moves. Iirc it was meant to be sort of an adaptation of D&D with card games. It'd eventually turn in the Duel Monsters we all hate to love after a couple iterations and unsuccessful adaptations, like Bandai's.
The first chapter of the manga was very similar, but yes, the first shadow game was simpler. Yami told Ushio he brought the money, in fact, he brought MORE than Ushio asked for (and a knife), and Yami suggested they play a game to gamble for it. They took turns placing the stack of bills on the back of their left hand, then stabbed it with the knife. When you pull the knife off, you get to keep any bills that are still on it. If I recall, Ushio gets too greedy and stabs his own hand, then tries to steal all the money, so Yami tells him he has to play a "penalty game." Using his magical powers Yami puts him into an illusion where he is surrounded by money. In reality, it's just leaves and garbage, but he completely falls for it, and the next day he is seen in a pile of garbage laughing about how he's rich. Yami basically broke the man's mind.

also manga pharao only severely punishes people who are confirmed to be extremely horrible and those who try to cheat.
@@windhelmguard5295 And anybody who looks at him funny. I mean sure, "bullying isn't very nice," but neither is murder or trapping people in a hellish nightmare for cheating in a game. Seems a tad extreme.
Tbh Yami Bakura just acts the way Yami did back in the day, possessing his host, tormenting some dudes, then tagging out, leaving his host to be like "weird, I can't remember anything that happened last night..."
The first time we see the pharaoh being "evil" in the duel monsters anime is when he refused to forfeit the duel against Kaiba on the first season and decided that winning the duel was more important than not letting Kaiba commit suicide, but Yugi takes control and surrender the match. Yugi got too scared at the time and refused to let the pharaoh take control for some time, that scene has much more weight in it when we know about the several murders Atem commited on season zero.
Before season zero: Man, he wouldn't have actually done it. Yugi is such a pussy bro.

Nah, the first time was him mind crushing Kaiba in episode 1. After that he went into isolation and didn't snap out of his stupor until Pegasus kidnapped Mokuba. I don't think Yami was too concerned about what would happen to Kaiba, he was just pissed and wanted to punish him for what he did to Yugi's Grandpa.

Season 0 is the story in the original manga. Then the story became completely focused on Duel Monsters during the Pegasus arc but the anime decided to reboot instead of continuing. Which is where the name season 0 comes from since it is sort of not really a prequel to duelist kingdom. Yugi summoning Exodia against Kaiba, beating Bakura in a shadow game and meeting Shadi all happen in season 0 but were redone in season 1 since it's technically a new show.
The joke is in the original manga/season 0, Grandpa commented on Tea's boobs...and it was weird.
Kinda like with Master Roshi on Bulma, Launch, Chi Chi etc 😅

The dramatic reveal of *_"Look! The Queen of Spades!"_* still gets me to this day.
The early manga/anime was a supernatural horror story about an ancient Egyptian pharaoh obsessed with games who possesses Yugi to get revenge on people who threaten him and his friends by challenging them to “shadow games” (dark, twisted versions of normal games, with karmic punishments for the loser). Eventually, one of the shadow games that was used was based on Magic The Gathering, called Duel Monsters in the manga. Fans of the manga wanted more Duel Monsters, so the manga became all about it over time, and then the real life card game was created to capitalize on its popularity in the manga. From that point on, the entire Manga/anime became more of a dark adventure story with Duel Monsters as the main focus.
In Japan, the anime started about where the manga did, so the first season had nothing to do with Duel Monsters. In the US, 4kids decided to skip ahead until the introduction of Duel Monsters. So, the season without Duel Monsters became known as “season 0”
The version fans call, "Season 0," was actually produced by Toei. The anime that everyone is more familiar with actually skips past the first 60 chapters of the manga and features Yugi's first duel against Seto as the first episode before going into the Duelist Kingdom arc. The manga it's certainly much darker, with the pharaoh acting as a dark antihero who inflicts physical/mental torture onto bullies and criminals that Yugi comes across, and some antagonists outright killing themselves.
Yugioh season 0 is basically “what if Saw took place with Egyptian magic.” It’s actually really interesting in its own way.
The game here was “pick up cards, and you can take steps up equal to its value. The winner gets the money at the top, and the loser falls to their death.”
It's really simple, my friends and I actually played it a couple of times. Except, you know.. on the ground. Without money or death.
It's honestly really fun. Sometimes drags on a bit, but never too much.
In the manga, the game was both players putting a stack of money on their hand and stabbing it. You kept all the money you stabbed through and lost if you stabbed yourself.
So the joke about him becoming a duel, motorcycle riding police officer, in Yu-Gi-5Ds the main protagonist duels security guard who I believe was confirmed to be him just older
Fun fact about the Manga for this section, when Yugi is talking about the Millennium Puzzle, he mentions how when it's completed, the person who completed it will be granted one wish, like Dragonball.
That's right, Dragonball is canonically referenced in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Manga.

Regular Season 0 is really good imo. Definitely darker than Duel Monsters version. And it’s cool to see all the different games they play.
Season 0 is the first adaptation of the manga. Where the card game wasn't a thing till like 50 chapters later.
The manga content before the 1st Kaiba duel was never adapted in the main anime series. That stuff covered how the 4 became friends, proper introduction to the pharaoh, him and Yugi developing their friendship, introduction of Shadi, Bakura and Mokuba (who was kinda a psycho originally. Playing Russian Roulette against Joey with poisoned food)
Season 0 is basically a retconned season in which the writers decided to focus entirely on the card game aspect as it lead to higher sales. That’s also why the first season of Yugioh just did whatever they wanted in duels. The rules were still being created at the time.
Ushio’s line about “becoming a motorcycle-riding security guard” line is a reference to _Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds,_ in which he works as a Sector Security officer.
Duel monsters (season 1 and everything after) was created entirely to be an advertisement for the IRL card game. Season 0 was the original concept of the show

The series we know as Yu-Gi-Oh!, and by extension Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Abridged Series, is technically a reboot (while we refer to it as Yu-Gi-Oh!, technically the official title is called Yu-Gi-Oh!: Duel Monsters). Originally the series was darker in nature and more focussed on character development, while the card game was merely a plot device. However, from what I understand, audiences became very much interested in this fantasy card game, so after a single season and a movie of the original series (which we now refer to as Season Zero), it was rebooted into a series where the card game was both on full display from the beginning and integrated into the plot. Once again, due to audience reactions, this eventually led them to make the card game real to reflect the new series.
The part where yugi Joey and Tristan got beaten up was recreated in 1st season of yugioh as a flashback. You'll be surprised at how the rest of season 0 goes if you want to check it out. There's only 3 episodes of abridged season 0, I don't know if the guy is planning or had plans on continuing it

This is where shadow games were ACTUAL DEATH GAMES and the pharaoh was a dark spirit that possessed Yugi and actually gave him incredible physical and mental abilities. And was a master “gaslighter” as you’ll probably see later.

Season 0 was where the manga started, which would be about dark games played by an ancient pharaoh to purge evil people.

The manga of Yu gi oh had this dark tone to it, the first "villan" beating up Jony-Uchi, Honda and Yugi. Yugi finaly ending the puzzle had inherited the soul of the pharaon and became the Yu-Gi oh="King of games", not just one game, all of them. He then challenged the bully into stabing a pile of money above their own hands whit a sharp knife. Each getting the money they stabbed. When the bully tried to stab Yugi to get the moment, then he was punished by the shadow game. I actualy prefered the first mangas of Yu gi oh because it wasn't just about card games.
Gawd I wish season 0 would get a proper adaptation

Duel Monster is a rebuild of the original (season 0).
At first Yugioh was not card game focused.
season 0 was before duel monsters, yugioh means king of games, and the original story had yugi being possessed by this egyptian evil spirit to play deadly games against bad people. one of these games did end up becoming what we now know as duel monsters, or the yugioh card game however it was very different from how it's played today. personally, i prefer the story of season 0, however the version that got popularized and made the name of the franchise was the duel monsters series, and i probably would have never checked out season 0 if it weren't for it.
So Ushio didn't actually die. The Pharoh just basically messes with their heads and makes them think all those things are happening which may be worse if you think about it

I love Duel Monsters, but heck I love season zero. The tone is so different I love it. I suppose they had to tone it down later and also focus just on the Duel Monsters game. But you'll see. Hope maybe you get to see all of season zero in some way eventually, at least I think it's great.
I'll wait and see if maybe ep 2 or 3 introduces the Duel Monsters card game (I honestly don't remember how soon it gets introduced), because there's some tiny bits of useless trivia surrounding it and the general reception of both the show and the card game, but I don't want to spoil anything.

Joey looks cooler because this part of the manga was made before Yu-Gi-Oh got popular, so the characters have more effort put into their designs. In the main series, they were drawn simpler so it'd be easier on the artist.
