The Legend of Zelda, originally released in Japan as The Hyrule Fantasy: Zelda no Densetsu, is an action-adventure game developed and published by Nintendo. The first game of The Legend of Zelda series, it is set in the fantasy land of Hyrule and centers on an elf-like boy named Link, who aims to collect the eight fragments of the Triforce of Wisdom in order to rescue Princess Zelda from the antagonist Ganon. During the course of the game, the player controls Link from a top-down perspective and navigates throughout the overworld and dungeons, collecting weapons, defeating enemies and uncovering secrets along the way.

Hate to say it Ryu, but Opera GX is trash. Please don't support trash just because they gave you money. Since 2015 Opera has been in a chinese conglomerate's ownership. Not only privacy concerns, but it's just not any better than most browsers
I gave Opera another try a couple of weeks ago. The last time was probably 10 years ago. I like Opera's interface, and performance in general, but....
It automatically imported the wrong Firefox profile. My mousewheel didn't work in Opera *at all*, in spite of the fact that it works in every other program. There don't seem to be any configuration options to fix this. CZcams performance was fairly poor in Opera, and CZcams TV doesn't play video.
love the content, but this browser has its fair share of privacy controversies. its owned by a giant chinese firm, tracks you by unique id und sells this stuff to who knows who.
@@RFGSwiss Let's be honest... every social media app we use, browsers, etc is tracking everything we do and selling that data to other companies.
He's gonna be speedrunning this within two weeks
I never comment, but this is bring back memories. I'm 45, and I played this back in middle school when it first came out. We would all struggle for hours on different levels and finding secret areas. Then we would all go to school and talk about what we all found the day before (before internet days). So it really felt like we were all playing it together and it became a social event at lunch.
How you're playing it, was exactly how the designer wanted you to play it, by exploring and not following game strats.
Thanks for the memories.
Ryu: imma do a 3 heart run
The Game: The fuck you are....
Love it 😂😂😂
At least it's not a swordless run... some speedrunners are crazy...
Now I get it
@@marcelo55869 Swordless is easier than 3 heart for me...
😂😂😂
Ryu is greatly underestimating how hard a low heart run will be and I cannot wait for it
Doing a low heart run means you will never be able to get the Magical Sword or the White sword, as they are locked to having a certain number of hearts.
Which is a super fun part of the game, kinda sucks to skip it.
I may be incorrect, but I thought you had to use the magic sword to hit Ganon.
@@Ctrlr1981i think you need at least the White Sword, which is why you are "forced" to get at least two hearts?
You can use the lower tier swords or the wand. The wand hits as hard as the white sword when you hit with the wand itself and not the wand beam. The magical sword just causes more damage is not necessary to get to kill Gannon. The only necessary item to kill Ganon is the Silver arrow
I had surgery in 2004 and had to stay at home for 30 days recovering. That's when I discovered that I could reach Ganon without ever picking up a sword. No glitches, but I did die twice.
So the story behind the sword wizard in the first cave, is that is how they taught people how to play Zelda. In the original beta tests you started with the sword and people had no idea what to do. They solved this problem with the sword wizard. It was the way Nintendo told people to go and explore and see what else is out there.
Wow, he's the first person in history to actually make money from the money making game, he truly is a legend.
Ilo mi fryande
If you're playing on the Switch or Wii U. You can basically nurf (or cheese) the money making game by rewinding (or save state) and choosing the right one.
@@TheDarkLink7 If you're ok with being a cheatin' rapscallion you could do that : P But millions of us regular honest gamers were content to just lose everything and then never play it again haha.
@@luminous6969 honestly I was mainly pointing it out (did it for one play through and in all honesty. Felt it took from the game). For first time players I wouldn't judge them to try and make it easier on them. Then nudge them to not using it.
Today's epic sponsor: money making game
Hey Ryu!, some comments without spoilers:
- Every dungeon has an item, so even if you get the Triforce shard, you should go back and find that item. Some of them may even have 2 items!
- You can go and tackle Levels in any order, but in some of them you may find that you need an item to keep moving forward.
- If you are going for a 3 hearts run, then you will miss on sword upgrades because they require a certain number of Heart Containers to obtain them. The philosophy is the same for the Master Sword in BotW since it was taken from this game.
- It is wise of you to keep waking up Armos and I would also advice to follow your guts and revisit places you feel might have secrets after obtaining new items.
- Bombable walls are not marked in any way.
- Yes, that was a Blue Lynel. The blue/orange enemies are Moblins, the guys on the water are Zoras and the spiders Tektites.
- Everything is hinted in the game, so you should be able to complete it without a guide. However, some of the hints by NPCs are either way too cryptic or can be unintentionally deceitful. It is up to you to see which hint to follow.
Hope you have fun!
Bombable walls are DEFINITELY marked.
There are just a handful of unmarked ones littered throughout.
There isn't a single marked wall in the whole game.
They most definitely are not marked. I believe that started with ALttP
Just to add on, the boomarang guy is called Goriya
@@quackerzdb , yeah and L1 boss is not a Gleeok, but an Aquamentus.
The initial thinking when this game was made was that u need to explore, make your own map, talk to friends, and bomb every wall/burn every bush. Strategy guides weren't that big, even in existence, back then.
Yeah. We played it r"coop" ecently without remembering much, and with making paper maps and notes while playing, was pretty easy to 100% without any resources. Just needs the intent up front to not be impatient, etc. (Does help a lot to have a non-driving player doing the mapping, etc though.)
And I did all of that.
Only thing I remember reading in a magazine was the lost woods.
up left down left.
And only because I didnt speak english back then. The lady tells you if you pay her 30 I think, but its useless if you cant read X)
Kids today have no idea what early gaming was like. When the NES came out, Mario and Link were like godsends compared to the Atari. But damn, some of those NES games were so freaking hard. But this game, I played when it first came out, and it's been my favorite franchise ever since. But no internet, no guides, just a tiny instruction manual, word of mouth, and exploration. Those were the days.
Strategy guides were big back then in Japan. Every major Famicom game had a strategy guide
The game did come with a booklet and a map with many points of interest marked on it. It's not like people had to jump into it blind.
Ryu: I'm gonna do a 3-heart run!
Wizzrobes (and Aquamentus apparently!): BONJOUR!
It's no secret to anyone that this game's a classic.
I can't believe he walked out of that tree casino with all that coin. That damn tree always takes my life savings.
He walked out with all that loot and then immediately purchased a key 😅
"Tree casino" -- nice :)
Just want to add, it's actually not nearly as much of a "guide game" as people say it is. It's just really easy to forget about the existence of instruction manuals, which this game absolutely expects you to read because it has a lot of useful information to point you in a direction at the start. It doesn't tell you the entire game, but the game itself provides enough direction to get you by once you get going.
Which is why I find it hilarious when people say BOTW and TOTK are based on "that feeling of getting lost in the first game", because you weren't really supposed to get lost. Hell, the game does everything it can to keep you on the right track, short of outright railroading you. Did you know the dungeons in this game have names? Probably not, because all they say in the game itself is "Level 1", "Level 2", etc. Because that information is far more useful to someone trying to play the dungeons in the intended order... which means the game absolutely did have an intended progression order. Which wouldn't be the case if you were supposed to get lost and wander in any direction.
Buuuuuuut I digress. Point is, this is actually one of the most well-conveyed adventure games on the NES.
I'd say BOTW wasn't trying to capture the feeling of getting lost but the same feeling of (relatively) free exploration. Hitting the dungeons in any order, going places you really shouldn't be early on, that sort of thing.
Yeah, it's not at all a guide game. If you explore, are vaguely patient, and make maps and take notes, you can 100% it without any help, and the game helps you a lot. But you need to have a reference of the hints, and all the spots that are blank/suspicious, etc. Kind of the point of the game really, exploration and critical thinking. (But playing like that is probably not the best streamer material...)
When the map was revealed as a swastika and he said "....oh" I laughed out loud
Man, I loved this game so much as a kid. It's the first game I remember playing. When you went in to spend your 50 rupees, I was already laughing, knowing you were going to get ripped off.
It’s easy to overlook the first game of a big series, and the original Legend of Zelda is no different. When people think of a classic Zelda game they usually bring up A Link to the Past or Ocarina of Time, but the original still has a special place in my heart.
Its like NES Metroid. Easily overlooked.
It's even better if you use the manual; it gives you enough knowledge to make it through at least 60% of the game without any issues, I only had to look up where one dungeon was my entire play through after getting stuck.
@@uponeric36 Yeah games back on the NES were really cryptic, and a lot of them including Zelda 1 used a manual.
The NPCs gave you enough info to find all the dungeons.
@@fbomb7184 Yeah but then some of the NPC's that gave info would be hidden 😂
As someone who has never played a Zelda game, I started playing the first one a couple of weeks ago. Last night I got to Gannon for the first time. Got obliterated, but I will keep trying. Ryu uploading this video has got to be a sign that today is the day i beat it.
Not sure if you are already knowing this but you will need the item from the last Dungeon otherwise Ganon cannot be killed!
Killing him is really easy once you have the item, if you beat the there bosses before Ganon is a piece of cake - however impossible without that specific item.
Literally impossible...
@@overlordalfredo Thank you very much!! Sadly, that was one of the two things I had been spoiled, the other one being how to unlock the 7th dungeon. But I'm still very proud of beating the rest of the game 😁.
Have a great week!
Watching someone play this for the first time is so exciting, reminds me of my first run at the game.
The game came with a partially filled map with the intent for you to finish drawing it in yourself. Also, making your own maps of the dungeons is tremendously helpful.
It also had a handy guide to the first dungeon, with a hint towards the second one. Game manuals are great.
@@ItsMrBozToYou And a Nintendo Power that was around the same time had a full overworld map...it was for the 2nd Quest, but was close enough to get overall layout.
@@rickgreer7203 Do any rereleases include this stuff? I feel like a lot of this stuff just disappeared forever from official releases.
I remember completing the map with my brother, keep the colors like in the game. It was q really fun way to expand the game experience.
Being that I've grown up with my dad's NES I've not really ever seen many people playing or talking about most of the games from my childhood cuz even my gamer friends grew up with like the Wii or later so it's really nice to relive my childhood through CZcamsrs like you!
You MUST collect heart containers if you want to get all the items in the game. The game uses the number of heart containers you have to measure your progress. The reason you couldn’t take the White Sword from the old man at the top of the waterfall is because you only had 3 heart containers. While it is technically possible to beat the game without you’re going to miss out.
PS The shield for sale in the shop is The BIG Shield and NOT the same as your starting shield.
I really hope he continues playing this.
You buying the key hurt so much, haha! The one headed dragon is Aquamentus, Gleeok is the three headed one. Also, not only do not all bombable walls have cracks, some walls you can literally walk through them after walking into them for a couple seconds.
Im pretty sure the dog looking enemies are Moblins
That ending troll strikes again. So many NES controllers thrown in rage back in the day
I just replayed NES Zelda not too long ago. Like three months ago. It was like the third or fourth time I posted a video of NES Zelda. There is some suggestions I had said during it. Also a trick I learned. There is a forced bomb drop you can do at the beginning of the game. After doing it. Two suggestions I have is to kill every enemy on screen to get rupees even tho there are enough hidden ones. So that you can get the blue tunic before going into the first dungeon. And while picking up heart containers and getting the white sword. Distance is key. Keeping distance away from enemies will be great.
Played this on NES as a kid with no guide, just had to grind through it 😩
The shield is bigger and offers more defence from shop. Definitely want candle, not just for light. Green bushes that seem out of place or Sus, shoot fire from candle. It will sometimes reveal a secret or open a way
It really helped when you zoomed in so we could see if it looked like Mario.
Greetings from the BIG SKY. I was working at Nintendo of America when this game was 1st released. It's not easy to beat.
OG Zelda teaches many valuable life lessons.. I was blessed to beat this game at age 4 and 2nd quest at age 6 out of boredom, second hand game also, no map, no hint system, no Nintendo power
I remember when this was new. Still one of the greatest games of all time. To this day, it even influences some of my D&D setting!
I remade level 1 in Dungeon Alchemist and ran a oneshot with it. It was a blast!

you gotta have a certain number of hearts to get the better sword
First dungeon boss is the dragon Aquamentus, but Gleeok do be hiding in the game somewhere😋
*beyond excited for this series!!
How of all games is this one that you haven't played. Nostalgia is real here, I can still remember a ton of the secret locations.
Great to see you tackle this classic, have you ever considered doing banjo kazooie n64. A great game and honestly may be better than Mario 64, it has a lot more variety in levels and a longer game time. I love Mario but it defiantly has a strong rival in banjo and kazooie. I mean I'm sure you've played it at some point I just meant for the channel.
"Yeah, I'm lost now."
-Ryu in the Lost Woods
Woo hoo! Super fun watching you play, Ryu! Good luck in your quest, wish I could experience it brand new again. Very nostalgic though!
Zelda 1 was designed as a community game. You would play at home then talk about it to your friends at school. You'd share secrets and tips.
It was not meant to be beaten without assistance. It also came with a partial world map with the first three dungeon locations.
It is possible to avoid obtaining the Heart Container in Level 1 to accomplish the 3 heart run. It involves getting behind the Aquamentus by purposely getting hit and using the temporary invulnerability to get behind it, then finish off the boss from there.
I saw someone do it by waiting for the dragon to walk out far and then running behind it. From behind, drop a bomb, then run to the last tile. Dragon will be killed and Link will be on the far side of the heart to miss it.
Ah yes my favorite Zelda enemy: "Funny dudes"
In for more of this! I tried playing this blind for the first time a few months back and only made it to about the 4th dungeon before i had to look things up online.
So the enemies that you first encountered were og Moblins. Bokablins didnt come until wind waker. I did think though in tears of the kingdom that Boss Bokoblins looked like og Moblins. The armored guys in the dungeon are dark knuts and i dont remember seeing any in tears of the kingdom. The boomerang throwing enemies are goraiya and they aren't in tears. The level 1 boss is called something like Aquamennis or something like that. I think gleeok is level 4 and 8, something like that.
⚠️ PS: When you encounter a locked door ask yourself “Have I picked up a key yet in this dungeon? If not I’d suggest you look for one before proceeding even if you have keys in inventory from other locations.
Using keys across dungeons is permitted but kinda dangerous and can make it difficult to proceed when you discover you missed something and must backtrack. Each Dungeon can be completed with keys found inside it. Keep this in mind:
When you enter a dungeon for the first time note how many keys you have going in; you should have at least that many when you complete it. If not you likely missed key drops by using keys from another dungeon that you may need if you have to return to it (even if you think you’re done)
Funnily enough, the original manual implies that it's like a sword throwing deal rather than like a magic beam, which would explain why the first sword has it too; normal sword with a magical sword recalling Link who threw it.
The story with the dangerous to go alone wizard is that he fulfills his destiny by giving link the sword while also getting killed by that same sword in 1 action.
9:40 that when you know that King Ruy is a real gamer.
Not sure who King Ruy is. lol
I literally just started playing this game myself for the 1st time too and found a Map in the North and it said to give to some old lady, I think that's the cave that you went into SO THANK YOU! Have fun!
That ending! There's a sucker born every minute 😂
I recently did my first real playthrough of this too, but I used a guide the whole time and instead of the actual NES version I did "The Legend of Doom" mod for OG Doom. Whole LoZ recreated in first person in Doom. Was quite fun
Keep playing! I think a lot of your fans would like to see you complete the game!
I've been waiting for you to play this for so long!
Oh my GOD that zoom in after "Boy. You're rich" She looked very happy!
Cool to see you collaborate with Wizulus
More of this please.
I appreciate the smal homage to avgn. Like here how you put in the cartridge with the hand cam :D
The 1st 3 Nintendo Power magazines that Nintendo published have maps for this game that you should read. The 1st issue has the map of Hyrule you need to study.
Seeing him grind money for the old lady and seeing the video only had a few seconds left was like watching a slow motion crash you couldn't do anything about. F
That ending was perfect!
Very nice - would love to see you play more of it!
I'm not an expert at Zelda ,but I suggest getting a huge piece of paper ( like a meme from a Chinese food restaurant and turn it over to the blank side) and you draw each room and that way you won't have to accidentally go through the same rooms 10x because you know what's there already and can explore new areas of the map.
I'm liking this series. It brings back good memories of my childhood when this game first came out. Oh btw you left at least 1 key in dungeon 1 :)
Your shield will block spears and rocks. You can upgrade to block more projectiles. Just be facing the projectile and don't attack.
You found the lost woods, you have to find the right path through the lost woods.
You spent so much time with low health next to a fairy fountain. If you only knew.
The rock formation you found is something. That is all I'll say for now.
Small keys can be used a crossed all dungeons. I would suggest not buying them as there are enough in the dungeons. The shield is an upgrade. Be careful though, like likes will steal it.
Ah, you also found the Lost Mountain.
I believe a 5 heart run is the fewest.
8 pieces of the Triforce of Wisdom.
You have to buy the arrows from a shop. Then it cost 1 ruby (rupee) every time you fire. It is a subscription service for arrows.
9:28 those things moving around the room are called wisps or jinxes and they prevent you from using your sword or items
I chuckled a little bit when you said you were not going to get any heart containers, but then tried to get the master sword [for which you need 5 heart containers total] ;).
As always - I enjoy your content.
There's for sure some obtuse things (getting to level 4 and 7, most of the second quest), but I think most of the game is very playable without a guide
Ehh... some of the bomb walls and bushes in the overworld are BS
You know what, I was wondering what game I should play and I haven't played this in decades you gave me a craving for it.
Like this so Ryu can see he does not need to do a 3 heart run. We all know he's a master. We want to see the magical/master sword.
I know all Zelda games have some level of cryptic stuff to them, but this one took it to another level. I never would have beat it without a guide.
Ryu will probably make it look easy.
I beat this game without a guide by hand drawing a map of Hyrule to keep from getting lost
Both extremely fun and frustrating to watch someone play a game for the first time I know this well. Looking forward to more!
Definitely not his first time lke he claims. He's just pretending for views. He conveniently skipped killing monsters in rooms where you get nothing from them, and killed them whenever you get keys, maps, or compasses. Not like he should know.
Then the first thing he tries is bombing the boss in Level 3, when he hadn't used any bombs yet, and didn't even try hitting it with his sword beforehand. He obviously knew how to beat it.
@17:23 is Owen Wilson's reaction in 1986 when he first played this game.
Beautiful ending.
To be fair, back in the day when the game was new, it came with a map and many of us had Nintendo Power magazine with tips. So if you got a couple tips from viewers it wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing.
I've played this game endlessly and part of me says help you, and another says 'let him wallow'.
Later there will be these rooms where you either give money or one of your heart containers to pass through, so you have a way to turn this back into a 3 heart run if you wish.
10:30 Might be a bit late into your run through the game for this, and maybe someone's said something already, but a bit of advice about exploring the overworld. There will usually be only one cave, dungeon, or hidden door entrance on each screen of the map, if any, and in the cases where there is more than one, they go to the same place anyway. So don't keep looking if one's already revealed to you.
I love the fact you have an NES Toploader. I have one that I plan on restoring soon.
This was awesome. I hope you keep going with this! It brings back so much nostalgia
“The heart forced itself upon me”… doesn’t notice it raised his health… leaves behind the heart container in the third level
7:45 Legit one the funniest instances of accidental foreshadowing ive heard in a while 🤣🤣🤣
Not even kidding that is the coolest browser I have ever seen. Absolutely downloading lol.
A three heart run is pretty easy in Ocarina of Time. First game? The wizards and blue knuckles will require a flawless dungeon run.
Observation: every screen on the overworld has SOMETHING. If you see a cave or item, thats it. If you don't see anything, you'll have to bomb, candle, or push an object to find the "secret". Yes. This means bombing the shite out of entire sections. Candling bushes gets easier once you have the red candle, which is in level 7. Once you get the flute, go to the empty fairy screen and play it. (Level 7 is way easier than level 6.)
10 : 19 I wonder if that's how the terra cotta soldiers are like, maybe we just need to hit them with a sword to activate them. XD
I've never seen that "rich" line. DEAD.
21:10 bro dropped his croissant. 😂
Level 3 is meant to look like a manji, which is a Japanese symbol of peace. Not to be confused with the bad thingy, which also gets commonly confused with both Buddhist symbols as well.
6:15 The intention was NOT to use a guide, the intention was for you to explore. Try things. Figure things out. (per interviews with the game's creator)
Playing this pre-internet, the game was a huge hit and there was multiple copies in the neighborhood. Every little secret we kids could find would be shared around in a collective effort to solve this game. I eventually beat the game after some weeks (months?), but I was unable to find the Red Ring, and I think I missed 1 or 2 heart containers.
3:45 I don't know if they've ever actually said so, but I like to think the old man is Kaepora Gaebora
That troll at the end was epic haha. I could see it coming. :)
I can’t figure out how he managed to miss the fairy fountain! I kept yelling, “Right and up, go right and up!”
If you tear it down. Many enemies don't exist anymore. The style of enemies has change dramatically. And things like the dungeons (which use to be 9 and is now 4) had keys and such. Now it just 4 puzzles. The game is SOOO different
Enemies in this game are: octoroks, leevers, peahats, moblins, armos, gels, zols, zoras, bubbles, like-likes, wizzrobes, vires, keese, ropes, lanmolas, tektites, goriyas, darknuts, lynels, gibdos, stalfos, pols voice, and ghini. I think I might only be missing one, had to really stretch my memory to come up with ghini instead of poe. Don't know if you want to know about the bosses
Yes finally! & it was everything hoped lol. PLEASE drop part 2, i want more
Played this for days as a kid, and now looking back, it definitely taught valuable lessons about gambling and getting scammed by old ladies! 🤣🤣
This was the first game i ever beat. I got the thing the day it came out. Its what got me into the whole open world type of games.
When I saw him going to the woman with the 50 rupees: "NO RYU NOOO!"
I groaned when ryu bought a key lol
