- The Legend of Sword and Fairy is a Chinese Jrpg based on mythical lore and creatures, set in a fantasy world setting. The game was released on PC in 1995, developed and published by Softstar. The game has had numerous fan translation attempts but none were successful until this patch version (v3.3) by PalFans, it was released in 2019. This game has now been released in Chinese on STEAM with NO official English translation yet again.
STORY: 20/20
Li Xiaoyao, is an orphan who lives with his aunt in a fishing village. When your aunt falls sick, you travel to an island in search of a cure. You meet Zhao Ling'er, who you tease by taking her clothes whilst she bathes. Forced by Zhao's granny to marry Zhao, you are told you have to remain on the island forever. You manage to escape with the medicine and succeed in healing your aunt.
Later, you are tricked and you end up losing your memory of the encounter and promise on the island. Fate intervenes and you end up meeting Zhao again, saving her from a gang of kidnappers staying at your INN, you return with her back to the island to find it has been destroyed and the gang has gravely injured her gran and the other disciples.
Just before her granny dies she makes you promise that you will protect Zhao and take her to meet her true mother. You decide to accompany her in search of her mother, who might still be alive.
GRAPHICS: 14/20
The game hasn't aged fantastically but it's not as bad as Final Fantasy 7's PS1 graphics by a long shot. Whilst if you play this game full screen the stretching does cause pixilation of graphics and text but it's not that bad, you can certainly tell what things are meant to be, animations look great still, spells still look nice also. Each character that has a face graphic looks nice, different from each and none look the same, which is a nice touch.
I think the menu design could have been a bit better in look but then this game WAS made in 1995. Certain aspects of the battle menu could have looked better also but it's manageable and functional so that's all that matters really. Monsters look great, animated and use some nice skills and spells, and the bosses look great also. Character design is probably one of the most impressive things graphically in this game also, not to mention the nice FMV/Animated cut-scenes that take place.
SOUND: 18/20
The game's OST is amazing, every track I loved, it helps set the mood for the game's world. Sound effects are great also but the monster noises when attacking can get a little annoying when grinding in areas.
GAMEPLAY: 18/20
I really don't know why but this game scream Suikoden at me, probably why I like it so much. The game plays very much like a Suikoden style Jrpg, battles are fast, skills look great, and the story is a real great one. The menu issues I was having with my recording program aside, this game's menu is extremely easy to use and navigate, I think I would have preferred COOP to have been translated as AUTO but as they say.. "beggars can't be choosers" and I was just actually happy I can play this game in English now.
There are plenty of shops for you to buy items, armor, and weapons to help you on your journey. There's plenty of side quests hidden but available to do if you find them. There's a few systems in this game also, a magic attack element system, skills system, monster catching and turning them into items system, a throwing items in battle command, and you are even able to later steal from enemies, there really IS a lot to do in this.
TRANSLATION: 15/20
Honestly, the translation ain't perfect, but I have a feeling PalFans were trying to give it that authentic Chinese style feeling by keeping the translation as close as they possibly could without having to change much in the way of cultural references and actual wording in the Chinese version, either way.. they did a pretty great job but it ain't perfect.
That being said, there's still graphical glitches sometimes, and for some reason when recording the STATUS menu wouldn't show up on the recording program but was loaded on the actual game's screen, that was totally weird.. and why you see me trying to open STATUS menu a few times over and over.
Another issue was the fact that the recorder would also show items picked up pretty late compared to what was on the game screen and also appear/disappear extremely fast.. whether this is an error caused by the translation patch OR my recording setting is unsure.
OVER ALL: 85/100
Over all.. it's a fantastic little game that you should play if you can, do I recommend it? OF COURSE! it's a classic.

Hey I just want to say thanks for making this video and the description. I was bored one day and started downloading random games on my modded Switch and this game appeared (mind you with no description or images at ALL) so I went into this completely blind. The description gave me the context I needed lol, so again thanks.
Those slimes have Cartoon Network's stock laugh.
so funny that you tried to find props after Jiujianxian, there's nothing!!but i hitted space every rooms and cabinets too XD
LOL! GLad i'm not the only other person who searches EVERYTHING.. HA!
The stock laugh sound effect they used for the slimes and it was heard in some Cartoon Network logos.
nice :D
@@SylarDean Also some other stuff have to use the same laugh SFX as this one.
Never knew they made an english version. Do they have it for 4? Personally i think that's the best one.
not that i've seen, but i know there's a couple of sword and fariy games on STEAM, not sure if its the one you're looking for though.
How did you enable English translation? Iv read the readme and it says “ overwrite the extracted files for your GAME VERSIONS in the game directory” . I’m not good with computers so none of this makes sense to me
So once you've installed the game, extract all the files from the patch file, open the folder where you installed the game too and put all the extracted files from the translation folder into the fodler where the game was installed. It will ask if you want to overwrite it all, choose YES.
I remember when that time using internal soundcard like sound commander 8/16 bit , sound blaster 8/16 bit for a good sound and effect like this game 🤣
Does the translation patch work with the Steam version?
I dunno
grew up on this game, a RPG classic in the same class as chrono trigger.
Came here because of BTIC
